[Q] Really thinking of buying one, but still a few fears... - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi, long time lurker, first time poster :3 Iv done a LOT of research on this phone (borderline overkill) but I still have a few questions about it:
1) I read about a problem with the screen where a hairline crack under the top-layer glass would just randomly appear...how normal is this
2) For retailers, how good is Negri, Expansys and L2D2 in terms of warranty? like in the case of said hairline crack? -I live in the US in case that would affect how they would do warranty
I really really want this stunning looking phone xD I already know about the issues with the color tint and radios but they seem like they could possibly be fixed on the software side so I'm not too worried there. I have no experience with the 3 listed companies and I don't want to plop 500-700 for a phone and be left out in the water y'know?
any and all help/input/opinions will be greatly appreciated.

Okay first, I've never gotten this line once I'm thinking it varies from device to device. And also, what carrier are you on?

the all mighty...AT&T

I tried to get a warranty replacement for the vibrator through Negri Electronics and never got a reply.
No hairline crack. I love this phone and learned to live with the weird vibration. I bought from Negri no problem. Besides the warranty thing... I think I wasn't persistent enough with asking them for a replacement. Either way, it shouldn't take more than once to get their attention, and I'm still a little bummed out about it all.

I know if the screen where to crack on me and they refused me a replacement Id raise hell xD I have the motorola backflip, and while a rock would be a drastic upgrade I decided I would treat myself to a really nice and long lasting phone. Im still a wee bit paranoid about the hairline crack but, who knows. maybe it is just a small number of devices...my heart demands I buy the phone now while my mind tells me to make absolutely sure this wont backfire on me haha

Theres a chance of manufacturing defects with any phone you buy.

you have a point. I mean, I know that there's always a chance of such things but I guess the fact that it dose cost quite a pretty penny and got paranoid when I read about the screen crack that I wanted to find out really just how bad it was. I think I'll make the purchase on my next paycheck and hope that I wont get one that will break so easily lol but it's good to know that Negrie and Expansys offer the 1yr warranty just in case

Thing is, you go to any forum for any new device and you'll see reports of manufacturing defects. You shouldn't be spending your last penny on an unlocked phone for any situation. There will always be a chance you'll buy it and it'll be broken and you won't get a replacement. Just keep it in mind.
If you decide its worth it, then get it!

oh I know I shouldn't spend my last penny on an unlocked phone, I made sure to give myself a good size buffer before I even began thinking about getting it. It ended up being narrowed down to this and the captivate glide but the nexus is just to sexy looking and appealing :3 so yeah...I think with my coming check, I'll be buying myself a nexus! you guys have been a big help
=edit=
one last thing, who dose offer better customer support and the like? Negrie or Expansys? and Im guessing no one has really heard of LD2D xD

the gsm version doesnt really have radio issues, thats the lte version. But i do worry about the screen crack. So far ive been good.

Never heard of a hairline crack but ensquared will also sell you a warranty for the GSM version

Really want to get one of these...but hardware problems scare me

Ok so I'm sick and tired of dealing with sprint's pathetic excuse for "3g" speeds. And using 3 year old phone technology (lg optimus).
I've been a part of the android club since the G1 and my biggest gripe has always been the lack of hardware acceleration. Finally I thought, a phone that does this! But everyone is saying there are screen problems...and it's not as snappy as they wish it were.
Are the issues really as bad as some make it out to be? Or are these just people who like to complain for the sake of complaining? If I do order one what should I make sure to check...and how long do you have to send it back?
Really want to click the "order" button on google play...someone convince me!! I was waiting to see what the SGIII was going to be priced at...but I know it'll be way way more. I don't really like the idea of spending more than $400 on a phone.
Nobody can decide for you. If it doesn't work out, return it. You also have a 1-yr warranty for showstopping issues.
Every electronic device has potential issues. Mine has been flawless for months...and I'm not alone.
Regardless of what phone you order there is always the possibility of recieving a device with faulty hardware. In that case you can return it for a new one.
I can't really convince you either way. I love my Nexus, and haven't really had any issues with it. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who asks. SGS3 could turn out to be great, but if you are looking to spend a little less and want something now I'd go for it.

I do want it! Not looking for someone to decide for me...just hoping the issues aren't as widespread as some say. Seems like almost every experience I've read people have had to send the phone back 2-3 times to get a good one.
Kinda crazy for something that's been in production for 6 months now no?
I like mine. You could go to a Verizon store and check the screen out. The biggest gripe people have is on a grey background on low brightness there can be a grainy appearance. Meh. Don't get it if you care but honestly I don't
I haven't had any other hardware issues.

I highly doubt the Galaxy Nexus has any more or less hardware variability or faults than any other phone. People just like to complain, and the minority with issues are ALWAYS more vocal than the people who are happy.

So what's the process for using this phone with tmobile's $30/month plan? I order it online and then take it into any walmart?
Yes, every phone does have it's faults, but the Galaxy Nexus' screen issues is very prominent in so many of these devices that it's ridiculous. And I can tell you firsthand that it is not just for the sake of complaining, a lot of these screens are terrible. I'm waiting on my 3rd Nexus to come in on Wednesday and hopefully there is nothing wrong with it. But I've read countless stories about how many people had to exchange their Nexus 7 or 8 times before they got 1 without problems. But I'm just informing from experience / reading.
Aside from the faulty screens I've gotten, I LOVE this phone. It's amazing and I would definitely recommend you to order this. If you do get 1 with a faulty screen simply exchange it. Everything about this phone is great and for me the Nexus line is the only way to go now.
Not even every phone but almost EVERY device that is made whether it is a radio, television, mouse, speakers, etc. There is a chance of defect. What matters the most is whether or not they will send you a replacement in a timely fashion without question.

Buy this: http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phone/T-Mobile-Prepaid-SIM-Activation-Kit
When it arrives, activate it here: http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-activate
Put it in your phone.
DON'T go into a store. Its an "online only" plan. Call customer service if you need to port a number.
I strongly suggest that you read the Prepaid thread and specific $30 month thread before trying it out. There are some asterisks and fine print when it comes to prepaid. I personally am running this plan and love it. I just recommend you know what you're getting into before signing up.

You don't get roaming, you don't get good customer service, you don't get free nights/weekends/mobile to mobile minutes, your service shuts off on the 30th day of your service if you don't refill. Things like that.
That being said its still the best deal in wireless if you don't need many minutes. I mean I still use it . The pros heavily outweigh the cons.

Congrats, you won't regret it, awesome device I'm one of the people that likes this phone. Best damn device I ever held in my hands, once you root it and start flashing (If you're into that), you'll see that the experience will be even better. Enjoy.
If you want you can also try getting the SIM at your local T-Mobile store, to avoid waiting for shipping(I'm sure you'll get the Gnex quicker), rep should give you one. I would anyway..
Thanks everyone. Do you guys use a case/screen protector on yours? Or just never let it out of your hands?
It has curved glass so do screen protectors work as well?

Personal preference really, there's a bunch of threads around with in depth info regarding SP's and Cases.
Wet apps will always have the best edge cover, but usually might have a minimal orange peel (not all cases). Dry apps on a good quality SP will be crystal clear but might not adhere all the way on edges. My 2cents with personal experience...

I use a zagg screen protector and that's it. I feel the cases take away from it design too much. I bought my GSM gnex back in November from the UK (had it shipped international to the US) and I cannot complain about one thing. Screen has been perfect . This is absolutely the best android phone ive ever used by far. You will not regret your purchase in the least bit. Have fun with it, and welcome to the family!

[Q] Faulty LTE Radio? (VZW) Which Part to Swap Out?

I received a CLNR replacement from VZW this weekend due to massive banding on my original device. Take it out inspect it for scratches, fire up the phone, check out the screen for banding etc. No scratches, screen has no banding/dead pixels and I assume all is well! Much to my dismay when I try to DL apps, surf the net or stream Netflix , make calls etc. the phone cannot keep a signal to save it's life. It has full 4G signal and after I access data or make a call, the bars are gone and there's a x in the signal bars. When this occurs, I cannot makes calls or access data etc etc. When I switch from LTE/CDMA to CDMA only I have a stable data connection, and calls can be made etc. Would I need to switch out the entire main motherboard or would I just need to swap out the antenna? I've been searching around for an answer and cannot seem to find one. Checked out a few tear downs and it seems simple enough to remove. I do have experience tearing apart and rebuilding so I do not see any issues. Thank you for any input!
If you got a CLNR and its faulty, get another replacement. Why would you try to open it and fix it, potentially breaking and voiding warranty, when you can just get it replaced for free?

Well I'm tired of playing the warranty exchange game and getting a crappier one. The screen on the one w/ the faulty radio is PERFECT. No banding, no discoloration etc. Besides I like to rip crap apart, if I break it I'll just buy another one . Plus I don't see any void warranty stickers in plain view ;o.

If you have ever gotten a Verizon CLNR you would know. I've received THREE Nexus' with scratched screens out of the box. I'm tired of the asshattery of their CLNR program. It might seem retarded to you, but after dealing w/ duds for 3-4 exchanges straight, see how you feel after that. Besides I will have fun opening it up. If it breaks I buy another one. Well if you're so loaded, I'm surprised you dealt with CLNR in the first place... why not just buy a new phone every time you get a scratch on the screen there moneybags?
I dealt with it at Sprint and after 4 replacements I left my contract with them. I know it sucks, but seriously choosing to rip your phone apart and replace an antenna (which may or may not fix the problem) when you can have them replace the phone free makes absolutely no sense to me. CLNR sucks, but you're bound to get an acceptable one eventually, or you should be able to complain after so many replacements and get an actually new device.

He bought it yesterday , so I'm really ****ed. I talked to him on the phone and he was somewhat crying as he was hardly able to afford this after selling his laptop , as it's in India and it's really expensive in India. He didn't buy it from Google, so no RMA there.
I dropped it, sides got scratched :crying:. The scratches isn't on the back cover or the display. It's on the very sides (between the screen and the back) I don't know what that part is called, it's a glossy black which is rounded on the screen, may as well be a part of the screen.(I hope not)
I can I think afford 30-40$ max to get his tablet fixed, not more than that unfortunately. He bought it for 390$(Indian price).
Please Please, help a fellow member out I was about to root this thing for him so he can have some goodies but sooo unfortunate of this event. It's 12AM right now and I will be meeting him at 11AM tomorrow and I really don't want him to get much worried(not that he already is) and he is my best friend so that can ruin our friendship aswell :crying::crying::crying:

You can't repair the screen like that.
Full replacement or none at all.
Either he forgives you which is going to be hard, under the circumstances you mentioned or you sell your Nexus 5 and buy him a new Nexus.
Then, take his old Nexus, sell it and buy another phone for yourself.

T-a mobile gives me a hard time....

The first time I had the LG G3 I went to return it for an exchange at the last day (my 14th) day. As a result I got into an argument with the sales representative about the display. I told her that the digitizer is visible on mine and it bugs the crap out of me, and so I wanted to excersize my right for an exchange for another G3. Then she started spewing nonsense and saying things like "Well you can't really see it, so it's not a big deal", etc. Well it is a pretty big deal if you buy a $600 product.
We ended up exchanging the phone 2 times straight that day. The second G3 I got had an extremely visible digitizer and the screen had a bad yellow tint. The third G3 was the last they will give me and they made it very clear to me that no matter what it is they won't exchange it. Guess what? It still has a more visible digitizer than my original one and the color temperature was still allot warmer. My whites look...yellowish.
I'm sorry for the rant, but why would those employees give me such a hard time trying to exchange a product? Its rediculus. Now I'm stuck with one worse than the original when it comes to the screen...
Funny never ever ever had a problem returning a phone with in the 14 days
also they will do that if you returned it a time or 2 already it cost the store money each time you do and exchange
also if your a PITA customer lol they will give you a hard time just for the fun of it
It cost the store money end of the day its business
Yeah and I believe their personal statistics (or the store's) are marred due to returns and exchanges.

The first one had a minimal visible digitizer with a nice toned display. But it had backlight bleeds on the edge. The second one was just completely washed out with an extremely visible digitizer that it was just exchanged on the spot. The third one I had no choice but to keep, but the digitizer was not as visible and the display still had a yellow tint compared to the original.
If you ask me for $600 I have all the right to exchange the phones all the way until I final have a good one without any physical flaws.
Didn't you return your G3 for dust too? How many have you tried? Gosh you really are trying to break the record of some guy on G+ returning like 10 different G3's at T-Mobile and AT&T. Then he gets mad at T-Mobile for them having to mail him a check even though he paid cash. I think he did that twice. lmao Don't tell that's you? lol
This is more lg's problem. Perhaps you should take it up with them instead of the middle man I bet you would actually get somewhere.

That was the first one. The second one was exchanged again on the spot for an obvious faulty display.
What are my chances of actually getting a good phone with LG vs T-mobile?

If you tell them what happend at the tmobile store, complain politely and ask them to make sure its good before they send it I bet its a for sure thing

I can consider myself very lucky for owning a flawless unit then.
I know if you came in to my store and tried that you would have gotten turned way and told to take it up with LG since we would have allowed you 1 exchange NOT 2 or 3

Think you have to send your phone to LG so you would need another phone. I don't think it's a quick process and I doubt they look over the phone with a magnifying glass to see the slightest thing wrong if it's even wrong. I guess worth a shot. If it was me I would've just returned it and got a different phone or wait a month and try again.

Yeah it will take a week at the minimum to get the new phone more likely 2 - 3. I would have done the same thing as you and got the m8 or s5. Luckily I got a great phone and didn't need to.

Didn't you return your G3 for dust too? How many have you tried? Gosh you really are trying to break the record of some guy on G+ returning like 10 different G3's at T-Mobile and AT&T. Then he gets mad at T-Mobile for them having to mail him a check even though he paid cash. I think he did that twice. lmao Don't tell that's you? lol

Do you have the G+ link for that?

This thread reminds me about being on MacRumors and people talking about how they had returned like seven iPads until they got one that didn't have one of the several ridiculously impossible to notice defects.
This is why I'm glad I don't work retail any more. It made me wish there was a policy to be allowed to slap customers for being absurd.

I know if you tried to do that with me I would be sure to put you in a very very tough position when it comes to your job. If you sell me something, it better be as damn good as it was advertised. If you exchange a faulty product, it better be better and not WORSE than the one I just had.

Yes but the problem is that with LG I have to send in the phone. That's something I cannot afford to do since I have no spare phones. Can they not just send me a unit and then I ship mine back?

If you can not see the flaw, you must be blind. Sorry. But the display models and the first G3 I had where all cooler than the one I currently have...by a good margin. So no, its a very VISIBLE flaw. Well I wouldn't call it a flaw, but out of the ordinary characteristic.

Indecision on the definition of flaw? I think you need a new hobby...this phone thing doesn't seem to be working out for you.

Possible to insure mi mix 2?

I'm considering the mi mix 2 but one thing i worry about is replacement parts if anything happens to the phone. So can you get insurance on these just like any other phone?
Use a credit card that provides an extended warranty on purchases.

This is going to vary from each 3rd party that's selling the Mi MIX2.
Basically, the seller handles warranty claims for you,so,additional insurance may not be needed, unless you want damage coverage.
The buyer is usually on the hook for shipping charges on at least sending it in.
Regarding insurance against loss &/or damage, there are 3rd party insurance plans, such as Square Trade & Ascurion:
https://www.squaretrade.com/
https://www.asurion.com/phone-insurance/
Her's a list that has a couple other insurers you may be interested in:

I guess i should clarify im talking insurance from damage like a cracked screen or cracked rear ceramic. Ive never really had any problems with something having to file a warranty. I didnt know if since this phone isnt sold in America if it could be insured or not?

Same thing applies from my previous posts, you'll have to do your homework & check out each insurer/3rd party seller.
It's a bit soon to see individual parts for sale on eBay/etc....
so, if this is a major concern, you'll probably want to wait a month or so before diving in.
My guess is that parts will eventually be available considering this is a global phone & a potentially lucrative market for parts dealers/etc.....
Cool. Thanks for the advice and quick responses. Sucks cause i feel like insurance is kind of a waste of money cause ive never had to use it and i pay 12 a month on my s8+ for it. But i know the moment i dont have it ill have a cracked screen

Thought you might be interested in this teardown of the Mix2:

Might be good to bookmark for possible future repairs, perhaps someone local to you could do the screen replacement,if needed.
Still have that matter of parts availability,I'd begin my search on Ali Express/eBay & the like when the time presents itself.
