Dull Screen after Screen Change HTC desire - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello, I have searched the forum for someone with a similar problem to mine but I cant find any info anywhere.
I cracked my screen by throwing my phone at a radiator It still worked and was nice and bright with cracked screen.
I have now installed two screen's off ebay from diffrent suppliers which are dull and pinkish in colour when the phone is turned on. I have tried to turn up the brightness but it has no affect on the screen.
Can anyone please help or come across this before. Surely I have not had two bad screens?
regards
Nick

It is far to dark to use. I think its just these cheap chinese screens that aint up to the job. Going to try and find a propper htc one.

Did you originally have an AMOLED and these are LCD?

How to tell if my screen is Amoled or SLCD?

Recently had my phone back from HTC for dust removal and I'm not entirely sure if they've changed the screen to SLCD. The rom has been updated to 0.83, but they tell me they always update the rom when a phone comes in for repair.
Is there a program I can safely run to determine this?
On a black background you will see a grey sheen at certain angles if it's SLCD.
You will likely see light "leaking" around the edges of the screen too
From what I've read on a dutch site is that when your screen is Amoled, the box will say something about a 3.7" Amoled screen.
But when it's SLCD the box will say something about a beautiful 3.7" screen.
turn off your device, then turn it back on while holding the volume down button, at the top of the screen make a not of your hboot version, if you have hboot 0.83.0000000 then you have an lcd screen any others and its amoled

This is not true.
Sorry... wrong post.
I've not seen an S-TFT desire, but I'd think it unlikely it has the pen-tile subpixel arrangement, so if you can see that then it's probably AMOLED.
I personally find this most noticeable during power-up - the white startup screen has a green fringe down one side and a red one down the other.
I would have thought that they would have given you the same type of screen as you had before.
Thanks for all the replies. When I view pictures in the HTC gallery, (tap on one them first to view the pic without the share and trashcan icon etc), the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen (ie outside the picture area) look exactly the same as when switched off, i.e. no backlight at all visible. Does this pretty much confirm its amoled? Perhaps somebody with a SLCD Desire could confirm if they can see a backlight in these areas

Got a new Desire on Saturday (from mobiles.co.uk), and mine does not mention AMOLED on the box next to Display, it just say 3.7 inch touch sensitive screen.
I'm guessing it's a SLCD then, still looks good.

I have a desire with SLCD and I can see the indication of "HTC desire LCD" in the battery compartment, see attachment. I do not know if other owners of SLCD screen have this also.

I've just had a look at mine and it doesn't mention that, and I think I've got an LCD because the box didn't say AMOLED.
Ok mine is amoled. Just want to ask which one is the better amoled or slcd?

There are far too many threads discussing that already!

Faint light in top right corner of the screen

Hi all, hoping someone could help me. Hot a new desire yesterday and have noticed when no a black screen these is a faint light in the top right corner. You can't see it when the screen is light though.
Is this faint light a problem or will it be ok?
Cheers all
Blinky
Not sure how common this is but I have the same problem and have heard about it before. I was thinking of returning the Desire for a different one but if it is a common problem then I won't bother.
Silly suggestion, it doesnt happen when your notification led is on does it?
As that would produce a slight glow from underneath the screen.
I have the faint light in the top corner even when the led is off.
Anyone hot any other ideas what it could be?
Cheers
Blinky
Is this while the screen if off?
Looked on my Desire - can't see any other light source?
Any update on the uper right corner issue, I have same problem and even went back to store to change the device, but the new one had same issue. Dont know if its only my bad luck or what.
Its plain backlight bleeding, could be possibly solved by some ghetto disassembly and sharpie, but I wont sacrifice my warranty to fix something that doesn't bother me (and of course it's a feature/bug of SLCD screened Desires)
So you think i bought desire with slcd not the amoled one. Didnt know slcd desires are already on the market.
Hmmm, I have this issue as well, only really shows up on a dark blank screen, so not to much of an issue in day to day use.....Looks from all the posts that this is a "feature" of the SLCD screens that HTC are using......;o)
Substituted mine today in warranty...no differences, the same problem on the new one.
Thanks htc...good work...
Same story here. Bought mine (SLCD) about week ago and this screen "feature" was there from the very beginning. I was thinking about to return it, but I went through your posts guys and looks like this is a common problem...

[Q] My SLCD is faulty?

Hi,
I bought a Desire few deys ago and unfortunately it has slcd screen.I have noticed with screen checker that on black screen there is back light bleeding on the top right corner and on the left side as well. is this normal? are there any other people with the same bleeding issues? It is very annoying,i thought for this money i get a good phone...
The bleeding is similar like on the How to know if your HTC Desire have Super-LCD screen? on youtube at 50 sec(sry i can't send url)
and i also attached a picture.
Can i exchenge it?Is it faulty or normal?
Thx for the answers!
I downloaded a display testing app, and didn't see this problem at all. I went into a completely dark interior room and ran it again, and could barley see a tiny bit of this in the upper right corner. Since I haven't noticed it once in actual use, even at night, I'm not going to worry about it. However yours, as shown in your photo, is much worse than mine. I am uncertain how the warranty folks would feel about it, but it's your call whether to try returning it. Does it bother you when using the phone?
Hi,
If i'm using it nightime i can see proper bleeding on the right and left side as well if the background is black otherwise it is ok.Daytime i can see only bleeding on the top right corner with black background, but i think it shouldn't be like that, that's why i need info from other people who has Desire with slcd screen. As you wrote you did not realised the bleeding only after i metioned it.
I am waiting for more info, after i can make a decision to take back the handset or it is normal.
Thx
Hi guys,
please share with me your feedbacks if you have SLCD screen. I am very confused now, that this problem is common or only my screen is faulty? Because if it is only for me I have to exchange the phone.
Thanks
Hi,
If it is really looking like on this photo... i dont need a slcd screen to tell you that this is not acceptable... return the phone.

I agree with this. If my Desire looked like that - it would definitely be going back to the seller.
As to test on my phone - I can't as I have a AOMELD version of the phone. However, I too, don't need to see an SLCD to know the above is simply not acceptable.
I have the SLCD screeen. I have the exact black light bleeding on my screen also .
If all the SLCDs are ike this ,a replacement phone also will be similar .So no point in returing .Also there is no return possible in INDIA . .
I'm sure this is normal for LCD screens, there is a YouTube video comparing an AMOLED N1 to an SLCD N1 and there's a lot of backlight bleed on the SLCD...
Hi
thanks for the answers. So no point to exchange it, this thing is normal if you have slcd screen...Very strange and annoying.I thought this handset is almost perfect, i am going to sell it now.
thanks
Looks like Samsung's decision not to supply the AMOLED screens to 3rd parties is going to be the downfall of the Desire...
Hi! I just got a HTC Desire (SLCD) and have the same problems with the backlight bleeding (in the top right corner and in the left side but more at the middle point). You concluded it is a normal issue, but however there is people saying they don't have the problem in their SLCD Desires... Perhaps it would be worth trying to exchange it? what do you think? is out there more people with no bleeding SLCD Desires?
SLCD
i have an SLCD but no bleeding that i have noticed mine is 4 days old so maybe they fixed something definitely return it
im so glad ive got an amoled desire in all my previous htc phones with lcd screens, i neva had any bleeding like that so i'd take it back and get a replacement

[Q] Problems with colours after replacing screen

Hi there
I used to be a proud owner of HD2 but decided to get Desire. I bought one with cracked screen on ebay. Got it replaced but the colours look more yellowish and distorted. I've noticed that when I'm browsing the websites screen changing its background from yellow to white. So I know it's able to reproduce white. Anyone had the same problem ?

Dead Pixel(s)?

I have what seems to be a dead pixel that constantly seems to change color (when displaying darker colors it becomes visible) on the middle left side of the screen. I also seem to have one that flashes bright only once on top of the screen (not always, just when screen refreshes seem to occur).
Anyone else there having such problems with their X One? Sounds to be like a hardware problem..

a lot are experiencing the same mate, we don't know if its hardware or software no words from HTC so far
awaiting updates
Just found another (dead?) pixel. This one sits on the left side of the screen, and is only visible on grey or lighter backgrounds (not on black backgrounds). It is lighter than the rest when displaying a bight color, and sometimes flickery turns blue when swiping over colors on-screen.
Not all that disturbing, but I certainly don't like the idea of having a brand new phone with one (and potentially) two dead pixels on arrival.

Mine had 3 before I sent it back. Mine were dead, so stuck black.
Mine had a sticky pixel (the ones that can be seen over black background). It was visible only on very dark light conditions and over black background.
I wanted to go to the shop for replacement, but on that morning the pixel reactivated alone.
There are some apps on the play store that try to reactivate sticky pixel by changing the color of the screen very fast.
I doubt their effectivness, but they are worth a try.
I want to check One X for dead pixels in stock before I buy it.
How can I do LCD test at One X?
I try *#*#4636#*#* but I cant find LCD test here, so which code works for LCD test?

It is normally at the code you said, but seems to be missing on this handset. Use an Android app...there are quite a few.
But in stock Im unable to install any .app on it.
Any solutions how to check the display in stock?

Unless you have a very sensitive eye, I don't think you would be able to see a single dead pixel at the shop. The pixel density is so high that a single pixel is very very small. You need to watch very carefully to spot them.
Anyway, the best way to spot my sticky pixel was to take a picture covering the lens. You get a totally black picture, which you can view full screen and hunt for white/yellow/green/red pixels.
If the seller is veeeery patient you might be able to do that at the shop.
Maybe the same works for dead pixels, by taking a picture at a white wall.
What do the LCD experts think of this?
Anyway, all the apps on the play store for detecting dead/sticky pixel present the 3dots menu button. So they fail in detecting dead/sticky pixel in the bottom part of the screen.
Mine had a dead pixel along the top just right of the middle, I could only see it on dark colours. Took it back to o2 got a replacement there and then.

Attached a pic of the pixels I'm referring to. They are indeed 'stuck' pixels, not dead pixels. The one in the top only shows periodically. The other two are there constantly.
Also noticed the screen flickers on some apps. Now that I do find very annoying.
Requested a DOA return.
Mine was made in Taiwan.
i've been using the phone for a 3 days now, and i still have problem wit few pixels with exactly problem that is described in the first post. ota 1.28. did not help. did the pixel fix apps help, and if it did, how long have was the app active until the problem was resolved?

I am skeptical that running those apps will actually fix things. That was also why I returned that phone to be replaced. Got my new one today, and it has no dead pixels. It does however have a very vague yellow bar on the top of the screen. Almost not to be seen, only when the screen displays only white.
If it really is a problem, I'd contact my retailer and get it replaced.
