[Q] File System Permissions - Wildfire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi All,
Complete Noob here, so please be gentle!
I have been trying to flash the aGPS patch, and it doesnt want to know (on any version) and I suspect it is due to the file system permissions being read only.
My question is, how do I change the permissions to allow files to be copied & renamed?
I have been using Astro with no joy.
I am on CM 7.2 RC1.
Thanks Bob

If you're flashing the zip from recovery, you may need to mount system first in the mounts & storage option of clockwork mod recovery.
If you are doing it via a file manager, there should be an option somewhere to enable root access and or enable system r/w, I use root explorer myself and its as simple as touching a button in the top right corner of the screen to enable r/w.

Thats great, thanks for your help. Got root explorer and sorted the gps.conf file in two minutes.

[Q] Cant edit or delete instal-recover.sh

I am trying to use clock work mod to instal custom rom.... I am running the latest ics release rooted and unlock...
you need to download root explorer
then go to "/etc"
then click "Mount R/W" on the top of the screen,
and then delete install-recovery.sh
What is the question?
If you ARE rooted you need to install a file manager (Ex. Root Explorer), set R/W and either delete or Rename the file. Suggest you simply rename by adding a .bak to the end of it.
Once this is complete flash the recovery image through fastboot.
BTW .. you could have posted this in the Clockwork thread and the instructions I gave above are already there.
Edit: LOL ... I must type too slow. In 7 minutes you got three identical answers.
Need to be 100% rooted n a root explorer

[Q] unable to edit build.prop

Hi,
I have a rooted Desire with sandvold's ics 4.03 rom. Wanted to make some changes to build.prop but nothing I tried so far works... I tried Mount R/W app, Root explorer, adb, adb over wifi, ES explorer, tried to mount via clockwork... with ES explorer I managed to edit the file and make it save (what the program tells me) but when I browse back to the system folder the build.prop file is gone ?? I reboot the phone and build.prop is back but not with the changes I made to it ... it gets reset to default every time ...
Does anyone have any ideas how I can change the file ?
THx

I've truer to change build prop many a time with root explorer and it just reverts back to same after you reboot.....I've set to re changed file saved change set to ro rebooted had file remained the same.
I just use my mobile and this is how I successfully edited build prop
If you have ota files like miui Xj. Unzip the update file edit build prop....save changes....rezip and flash in recovery or you can edit the rom zip.

Well,if you constantly fail to successfully edit it on phone, you can edit it on computer if its not problem for you to flash ROM again. So when you have unpacked it use text editor(notepad,notepad++,gedit,sublimetext2....) and just edit build-prop,when you are done click save and repack it again.

file explorer capabilities renounced. renamed to root browser.

I am wondering if anyone else has noticed what I have come across. I use esf file explorer. In the past with custom ROMs you could easily direct into system/apps and delete or add which app you choose. But now it does not seem possible. You try to delete and at first it will confirm but the app will remain. On second attempt you will be prompt that this command has failed. Installing a new system app after giving permissions will give the same result.
I'm wondering if the developers have add some security so to stop us users altering there ROMs to suite yourself.
To me this is not open source any more and being given root access will need renamed to root browser. This isn't cool and is an obvious step in the direction of closed source.
I am currently trying renovate final 1.1. And Cyanogenmod on my nexus 7. Hopefully its jusr esf file explorers capabilities have renounced. But i suspect not. Are others having the same problem with custom ROMs.
Did you enable root acces in the settings of es file Explorer and also enabled the system partition as read and write ?

To gain access to system/apps you must enable root. Not sure what you mean by sytem partition as read and write. If its mount file system as read and write. Yes.
When you open es file Explorer and go to settings you enabled the root acces feature. But you you also need to enable the system partition to read and write
The picture is in Dutch .....But you need to enable the top 3 functions

Don't know what ROM you are on... your knowledge of pushing apps to /system (ie., via adb), etc., so I'm attaching the stock samsung keyboard (plain grey) with auto-correct functionality. You need to be rooted at least. Copy the attached apk to your phone... then, using your favorite root file manager (like Root Explorer, etc) copy to /system folder first... fix permissions to rw.r..r.. then, MOVE to /system/app. It will ask if you want to replace the current "SamsungIME.apk", answer yes. You should be good to go.

Those are folders/files in the flashable zip. Let's try the simpliest approach first.
1. Download "Root Explorer (File Manager) from the PlayStore, and install
2. From my post #6 above, save the attached file (SamsungIME.apk)... on your phone's sdcard
3. Open Root Explorer, and navigate to the folder on your phone (sdcard) where you put the SamsungIME.apk... long press it, then select "Copy"
4. now while still within Root Explorer, navigate to /system folder, and hit "Paste" (make sure you mount as R/W.. it's the button at the top. If you are mounted as Read Only, you'll get an error message "You cannot past here because the file system is read only". Just hit the "Mount R/W" toggle at the top of screen.
5. Now, "SamsungIME.apk" is in your /system folder. You need to fix permissions. Long press "SamsungIME.apk" and select "Permissions". There are boxes with green check marks. toggle the boxes so that you only have green check marks in: Owner: R W ; Group: R ; Others: R. Hit "OK"
6. Now, long press "SamsungIME.apk" file again, and select "Move"
7. Navigate to /system/app (you should already be in /system, so just tap the "app" folder
8. Make sure you are still mounted as "R/W", if so, tap the "Paste" key at bottom. this will put "SamsungIME.apk" in the /system/app folder
9. if you did all this correctly, you should be good to go...
Okay I tried finall got it in the right system folder like u explained I attach a picture. Its still not working. Do I just need to reboot or flash? I use goo manager.
Hope I didnt do anything wrong while moving it to app system

It appears you are not understanding some of the android basics...and that can be extremely dangerous... especially since you are rooted. From you screenshot, you show zip files in your /system folder. Per my previous post, I stated to copy "SamsungIME.apk" to /system... fix permissions... then MOVE to /system/app. Your screenshot shows zip files in your /system folder (i.e., "SamsungIME.zip"). My attachment is the apk file itself. So apparently when you downloaded, it zipped it for compression purposes. YOU NEED THE APK. I suspect it is inside that zip file.. so you'll need to know how to unzip that zip.. and get the ".apk" The APKs goes into the /system/app folder (Not /system). Try again, and get the SamsungIME.apk out of that zip... copy that apk to /system.. fix permissions... then move (not copy) to /system/app (it's a sub folder within /system). If this didn't work, you have done something wrong.
Damn I had the feeling some was wrong. So should I get that out of the system folder? How do I do that ? I cant delete or move them. Does it harm if I leave them there? Ya im trying that now how yiu explained the apk I get it . Thanks alot tho for ur patients

I use Root Explorer... if you long press the file, you get the option to delete file. Delete the ".zip" files in /system folder. Your screenshot looks like ES File Explorer (or something similar). You should be able to "select" that zip file, then delete. Go back to my Post#6 and download the APK file (SamsumgIME.apk)... do not zip it... you should be able to download file as apk. Then follow my previous instructions. Again, get the APK file (not .zip) to /system folder.... then fix permissions... then MOVE (don't copy or you will leave a copy of the apk behind in /system) to /system/app folder. System apk files belong in the app subfolder of system (/system/app). When you go to paste the apk in /system/app, you will be asked to replace existing file... replace it. Try again... report back.
Ok thanks will do that tomorow . I use es explorer yes. When I try to delete it says file cannot be deleted. Cant see any apk file I use windows 8 maybe tahts why?

Can't replace bootanimation.zip

Hi everyone,
I'm going mad to find a way to replace my boot animation. Since I've installed the Pixel boot animation via Magisk, I've been no longer able to change it, via flashing or manually replacement. I've uninstalled of course the app that operated the last change to my boot animation before doing this operation. By trying the manually replacement my explorer says I can't delete, rename or move the bootanimation.zip because "It can't be remounted" or something like this. Does anyone know how to solve this problem?
Thanks in advance!

I've tried with TWRP, replaced the boot animation.zip with the one I want but when I boot into the system it's like the old bootanimation from Magisk, for some reason, overwrite again the new, I've already tried twice. Any thoughts?

I use Solid Explorer, spent 3 euros to buy it so I have to make it work in some way lol. Anyway I'll make a try with Root Explorer.
Solved. Even if before all the changes I've deleted the module on Magisk, don't know why but in cache/magisk_mount there was still a sort of backup of the old bootanimation which was "reflashed" everytime some change to the media folder where made. Anyway, I simply renamed this file by adding .bak and flashed the bootanimation that I want, all from TWRP. In fact, another weird thing is that also Root Explorer can't handle this file, it gives in return the same problem of Solid Explorer, even by unmount e remount again. I can only touch these files from TWRP, don't know why.
