Bluetooth Car Stereo - JVC KDX50BT - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Though I would post this for anyone looking for bluetooth car options. I've been using this deck for the past week and love it. For years I used FM Transmitters, but after breaking/losing/etc several and not loving the sound quality, I bought a deck with auxillary input. That was fine, but still wires everywhere (especially when charging).
I purchased and installed the JVC KDX50BT. It is their entry level bluetooth deck, and does not have a CD player. Thats fine for me. I drive a Jeep and the CD players always end up getting dust inside and stop working after a few years (and I never use them). I ordered from Crutchfield for $100 shipped: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_105KDX50BT/JVC-KD-X50BT.html?tp=5684
In short, I love it. The bluetooth streaming audio sounds great, and although its hard to do an A/B comparison, I believe it is better quality than the old deck with auxillary in. Bass seems to not distort at higher volumes as much as the auxillary in. This would make sense if the stereo itself is doing the digital processing. It also shows the current song information. This is "BT Audio" mode, and will basically stream whatever audio you are currently playing from any app.
It also has Pandora capabilities. This is called "BT Pandora" mode and it will display your current station info. Even better, you can thumbs up or thumbs down a track from the deck itself. When you do this, the Pandora app recognizes this and displays a screen that does not allow user input from the phone. It is kind of annoying as I plan to put in a car mount and wouldn't mind being able to see the album art. On the other hand, I have put in about 3 hours of listening so far (off and on) and haven't had a commercial yet, so I'm not complaining too much! I was going to upgrade Pandora but now I may not need to.
There is also an external microphone you can mount anywhere in your car to use for calls. I haven't used it much but initial reports from my friends are that sound quality for the other party is good.
It isn't completely bug free with my Epic Touch (Running Mijj's Blend ICS right now). Sometimes it will switch over to the Pandora mode in the middle of a song without me telling it to. This is annoying, but it is quick to switch from Pandora mode. It doesn't always display the current song information correctly in BT audio mode, but most of the songs I'm streaming from my phone I don't need to know the title. It does not show song info from Spotify. It also will not display info from my podcast player (beyondpod) but I don't really care about that. The stock music apps seem to work best for song info.
I am guessing many of these issues are with the Bluetooth protocol and the way our phones handle it. It could also be the fact I am using a custom ROM rather than stock. All issues are minor annoyances.
Other pros:
-You can change the colors of the display to pretty much anything you want, and have different schemes for night and day.
-Easy to pair.
-Two USB inputs (front and rear) but if you are using bluetooth, one of these will be taken up by the JVC USB Bluetooth adapter.
-USB inputs are 1.0mA rather than the standard 0.5mA for faster charging. (I still use my car charger as it is positioned better for my needs)
-Radio does seem to have great reception; finding quite a few more stations that my old deck.
Other cons:
-Radio station presets awkward to use... you have to "scroll" through them rather than just hitting button 1-6. I've been playing with the bluetooth too much to really get used to it.
Meh:
-I also have a set of bluetooth headphones. If I am listening to the headphones and get into the Jeep, I have to either turn off the headphones before turning on the stereo, or manually connect in the bluetooth settings menu. As far as I know this is a bluetooth limitation and not the fault of the deck. It would be sweet to have it transfer automatically to the new source when it finds it, but not sure this is possible regardless of the setup.
-There is a JVC app that allows some touch based controls on your phone. I haven't used it much but it does seem to work OK.
All of that aside, the real reason I bought it was for the ease of getting into my Jeep with my phone in my pocket, having the phone automatically connect and begin streaming high quality audio to the stereo within about 30 seconds of the car starting (it takes a moment for the phone to connect). On short drives the phone doesn't even leave my pocket. So far, I couldn't be any happier with the results I am getting, especially for $100.
................And I just found the following deal that gets it down to $81 shipped. That sucks for me, but even at $100 it is a steal!

Nice find. I was just looking at a Sony Deck earlier that does the pandora control. It's a bit more expensive but also lacks a CD Player and has an OLED Screen or whatever.
I have a Sony now and it uses the same wiring harness so would be a quick install for me and I've always loved my one I had now.
The BT Streaming and Pandora Control are what i'm after though.

Just ordered mine few hours ago. I saw it at dealnews.com

Check the reviews of the low end Sony and pioneer Bluetooth decks on Crutchfield... from what I remember they were not recommended. Wiring harness took me 20 mins while watching a movie.

Nice! Wish I had seen the deal before I ordered mine but still no regrets.
When you get yours installed let me know what you think.

alright i'm glad someone else here is using this car stereo. I just installed mine, it's pretty damn amazing. The only problem I have is that the display doesn't show the track information when streaming over bluetooth. Just shows "No Name". Pandora track info shows up fine however. I did a google search and it brought me here. Any ideas what may be wrong? I'm on a EVO 3D btw

I also have a newer JVC deck, same controls as the OP talks about. Mine does have the CD player though. I would like to know what music app ever displays ID3 Tag info. I have never had luck with it other than Pandora.
Edit: JVC deck is a KDA735BT. Love the deck, works well with BT and Pandora. Would love to get ID3 Tags to pass through, perferably from Google Music but would be interested in any music player that has worked in this situation for someone. CDMA Galaxy Nexus.

Seriously looking at getting one of these.
Can anyone tell me how good the BT range is? Reason I ask is that often my daughter who is sat in the back of the car will use grab my Aux-In lead and play music from her phone. It would be great if the range was great enough to allow it to stream from her phone sat in the back of the car - no fights about stretching the cable!
I know to some extent it depends on the phones BT capabilities and bods in the car etc etc. But if someone could confirm it works from the rear seats or even further it would be very helpful.
Cheers.

The one I posted is bluetooth 2.0, 10m range via standard. On my deck I have gotten out to get gas with phone still in pocket, never missed a beat.

Hmmm, this is strange. Google Music shows the ID3 tags for me. I have noticed a handful of times that it does not update after a track change, but I'd say less than 10% of the time. I'm using an ICS based rom on my epic touch.
Have you tried using the JVC app? I don't use it but it might be worth a shot.
Edit: I just ordered a GSM Galaxy Nexus and will be switching over to prepaid, so I'll let you know if it works with that phone.

Thank you, just let me know what you find out when you get the GN, curious if it works for you.

First i bought this JVC KDR530 http://www.bestbuy.com/site/JVC+-+5...back/4005163.p?id=1218447374174&skuId=4005163 and loved it,it was $89 at best buy.I ended up returning it because it would not work with Epic over usb and required separate bluetooth adapter.
I returned it and decided to try Pioneer DEH-6300UB http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Pioneer...back/1752039.p?id=1218289372932&skuId=1752039 ,it was POS,buttons looked like they was gonna fall off any minute now and menus and sound was nowhere near JVC,plus it would not connect to my Epic over usb.
Then i wanted this JVC KDHDR71BT(same as KDX80BT but with cd) http://www.bestbuy.com/site/JVC+-+5...Deck/4888181.p?id=1218572403189&skuId=4888181 because it said on the box that its compatible with not only iphone but blackberry and android but it was sold out at best buy.
So after days of research i finally ended up getting this Kenwood http://www.crutchfield.com/p_113BT852HD/Kenwood-KDC-BT852HD.html?tp=5684#customer-reviews-tab for $239(yeah i know more then double as JVC,lol) but man it was worth it.
The reason i went with Kenwood because i read that JVC and Kenwood merged together, sense i loved first JVC i thought that i would get same quality from Kenwood and i did.
To make it short,it still doesn't play music from my Epic over usb but only charges the phone. But thats ok because it plays it over bluetooth and i can control my Epic from Kenwood(switch tracks, answer phone, display album info and more). Its real pretty to look at, a lot of options, same great quality as JVC(and not a pos like Pioneer),and sound is definitely superb(better than JVC but its in another price range,im sure that JVC in this price range be just as good).
If you want good solid built quality and great sound go with JVC or Kenwood because they are same company. If you want higher end models go with JVC Arsenal or Kenwood Excelon series.Their cheaper models are solid but don't pack as many features and sound is warmer on higher end models.
From my experience Pioneer's quality is not what it used to be(they still heve solid speakers) and i heard the same about Alpines.I cant comment on Sony, they used to be pos but i think they improved lately.
I say that JVC and Kenwood get you best value for you money from my experience.
Oh and i recommend Buying from Crutchfiled because you get free wiring and dash kit and end up saving $40,i wish i knew that before i bought them from best buy.And their tech support actually know what they talking about-which is rare these days, and it only took 3 days for my shipment to arrive.

Completely agree about Crutchfield, but I did want to mention that for mine, it wasn't expensive enough apparently to qualify for free wiring and dash kit. But said items were cheap enough, and they shipped to Hawaii for free, so I'm not complaining. I didn't need to call their tech support as they included very detailed instructions (and I'd installed on my vehicle previously) but I have heard nothing but great things.

Yeah my shipping was free to new york too.I think you need to spend over $120 to get free wiring and dashkit.
But look at it this way:If you go to best buy and spend $80 on mediocre stereo and spend another $40 on dashkit and wires which totals $120,you might as well spend $120 on crutchfield and get better stereo and get free dashkit, wires, detailed instructions and free shipping.
After I connected my kenwood my radio was playing fine but I had no sound from cd's.I thought I had a defective unit.So I called their tech support, guy told me that on chryslers I need to hook up onr wire differently and my cd's started playing.Try to get that from bestbuy or wallmart, they will tell you **** like push reset button, lol.I think im about to buy all my stereo equimpment fro them, plus their prices are same as other places if not cheaprr.

I bought this deck yesterday at Best Buy. I'm loving it so far. Apparently it's a hell of a deal as it was their last one in stock. Was gonna buy it at electronic express so I could get my 10% off, but they were sold out. Here's a pic in my mk2 Jetta diesel

So how is your ID3 trading with ICS working? Are you streaming through Google music or playing cached music or actual mp3s on your phone? Just curious, might try to sync some actual mp3s to the phone instead of streaming or cached music.

Little cheap devices that improve sound on XDA headphones

I just got a pair of SlicSound http://www.slicsound.com/ earpieces that fit over the headphones made for the xda and xdaII. They turn normal earphones into something like etymotics http://www.etymotic.com/, but for much less. I got them because they improve the stereo sound quality while still allowing full telephony operation, so I don't have to lug another pair of headphones to listen to my mp3s.
They are only $10.00, and do a good job of blocking outside noise from polluting your music or conversation; plus I don't turn up my phone as high. I like them so much, I even use the XDA headphones for my laptop with an adaptor.
Just thought I'd tell you about it if you didn't know, the company is a little obscure and took a while for me to find. - I am making a temporary review on my website if you want to check it out (pics and all) at http://students.seattleu.edu/kertesr.
Does anyone know if you can get something similar in the UK?
Buying Internationally
I heard that the Virgin (music) stores used to sell them in the U.K. but I don't know if they do right now. I do know that the slicsound website ships internationally...look under information I believe.
Thanks for the quick reply.

Where did you get the adaptor? I would also like to use my headphones in my XDA and also in the laptop, rather than carry two pairs of headphones around.
I've looked around, but although there are 3.5 to 2.5 adaptors, I haven't been able to find a 2.5 to 3.5 adaptor.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A little more expensive unit would be the blackberry gateway. Works very well, I have it setup in my car but streaming through pandora/slacker doesn't the greatest with it.
bought one too, friggin sony, thinking about trying a new kenwood deck seeing if that works...

i bought the cable to plug into the front USB on kenwoods to the apple 30-pin adapter. I'm going to take it and plug it into the demo unit at Best Buy to make sure it works when it arrives, lol . If that fails, I'll be being getting I think it's a belkin flex dock with aux out, and i'll see if that works.
I am using this in my car with an iSimple AUX/Charge cable and it works GREAT!
I bought two a couple of weeks ago - one for my car, the other for the house. Works great.
So you just plug this into the usb spot on your headunit, pair up for you phone to it and then play music? Sounds too good to be true?
No. You need an iPod cable that accepts audio and will charge the device. Then it will work.

Thats what i meant, muh bad.
Only downside to this is that it won't charge the phone
Bought this a couple years ago back when it was only 10 dollars. Works pretty well. Depending on your headunit or dock, the remote controls to pause/skip tracks also work too.
For those who have it, how do calls turn out? Like if you had this hooked up, streaming music through your headunit..and you get a call, whats it do? If it plays the other person through the speakers, how good is the quality? Does the mic just work off of your phone?
It only supports A2DP so no sound comes through for phone calls. This can only be used to stream music, but the speakerphone works pretty well.

It works great and does what it says. very easy to hook up, but i notice a lack of bass... anyone have a solution for this?
I bought one of these a while ago to use with my old pre. Seemed to work well enough, except that most of the time I actually wanted to listen to my iPod instead of my phone, so I never really used it much. Ended up eventually buying a Sony deck that has full built in bluetooth in addition to an iPod connector, so this little doohickey has just sat in a box for months.
Ooh, I just thought of something! If I combine this thing I never use with this other thing I never use - an iPod FM Transmitter/Remote dongle, I could make myself a A2DP Bluetooth FM Transmitter with remote!

Great Deal! Walmart FM Transmitter Review w/ Pictures

Hello Everyone - In my effort to somehow give back to the XDA Community somehow (since developing is outta my league) I figured I would try and do a review of an FM Transmitter I bought from Walmart. I made a thread about a week ago, and recieved some good options but this is what I decided to settle on.
Brand: Scosche FM Transmitter
Model: FMT4R
Price at Store: $12
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Scosche-FM-Transmitter/14666784
I will start off by saying WOW! I am quite surprised of how clear the sound was. You can easily choose from 14 different transmitting frequencies but upon installation using 88.3 FM worked great. I was warned about the clarity and told not to set my expectations to high, but this little unit sounds great. While searching another forum, a member recommended FM Transmitters that use batteries to power the unit and not the cig lighter. This transmitter uses 2 AAA batteries (not included of course) and I couldn't be happier.
If you are looking for an inexpensive way to play music through you're car speakers, this should work great for you
Overall Rating: 9 / 10
What phone mount are you using also?
Do you have some bigger pictures?
Scratch this sentence, missed the battery part. Not to be a downer, am only curious. I have yet to find a perfect one and people will suggest but others wont agree its crazy. Is this a Walmart only thing too? I should look around as you'd have to murder me and drag me in in order for me to "set foot" inside a Walmart. Less than 15 and that good? :suspiciouseyes
I need something that is as good as plugging in to the tape deck and have yet to find one. Gonna look but I've heard of battery powered ones that are no better. Maybe for 15 I can send someone out to hunt it down, but it'd still be a "contribution" to a cause I wish not contribute to. LOL Thanks though I need a more solid offering so some looking in order.

Just some cheap ebay mount I had laying around.
How long do the batteries last? Every one of these I've ever tried before had a lot of distortion. Not so with this one? i can't see why battery current would be superior to charger current?
Batteries haven't ran out and im going on 4 days of moderate use. Clearity is good. Its only 12 bucks, buy one and let me know what you think.
You'll never get as good a quality as a direct connection.. Sure, there's ways around the signal issue of FM transmitters.. Such as unplugging or removing your antenna all together, this cuts down on all the interference of outside sources, like normal FM signals, trying to overpower the FM transmitters signal.. I say if you've gone this long, without really needing to play your Evo through your radio, than save your money, and order an aftermarket cd player from Crutchfield.. They often have specials where you get everything you need to install a cd player, for free.. That includes wiring harnesses and the mounting kits.. I just got a Clarion CZ100 from them for $83, and that was with the 2-day shipping.. Really not a bad price..
I've bought it while on a trip from Indiana to North Carolina. It worked great. I got about 12 continuous hours straight of playback with little to no distortion.
On another note, I wonder if it's possible to mod it to run off a cigarette lighter adapter. I know that it would have to be changed from 12 volts to 3 volts. If I can find some plans on building it, I would.

All I have to say is WOW!!!! Thank u SO much for bringing this to my attention. This thing sounds amazing. It honestly sounds like im listening to a cd. Crystal clear, very loud. I've used other fm transmitters before, nothing top of the line but quite a bit more expensive than this one and this one tops them all. Best twelve dollars I've ever spent. I would recommend this to anyone. What do u have to loose. I promise, u wont be disappointed. Thanks again.

Also, for those that want one that plugs into the cigarette lighter outlet Wally World has it for $30. It comes with a remote as well.

By the way I bought this same transmitter for someone as a cheap christmas gift. Haven't heard back from them as to how they like it. I believe it was $11 at my local walmart. Also, its not in the electronics section, its in the car parts section, right next to the guns actually, haha.

[Q] A Music Dock for Evo?

Is there a music dock for the Evo anywhere?
I'm NOT talkin about a car dock, or a charging/syncing dock or just external speakers that plug into the headphone port...
I mean a dock like the millions of them that are available for the iPhone that is an actual stereo where the phone docks into it and charges/plays music at the same time..
I have looked everywhere and cant find one.. seems like the only thing that the iPhone has that my Evo doesnt that I actually want
Any ideas?
Oh, and something that you "rigged" up that does the same thing might be interesting to see also..
You're not going to find anything made specifically for the EVO. The best bet is to find a universal one that has USB charging capabilities. I can't recall one off the top of my head but I'm sure they are out there.
Yeah, I really wasnt expecting to find an "EVO specific" one but I cant even find a universal one that's not a complete piece of crap that is so inconvenient to use that it's not worth it...
Am I the only one that wants one of these or what? There has to be a bir market for a really good universal one that non-iPhone users can buy... Maybe I'm missing something
YES, YES, a million times YES on someone making this!
I would buy it in a heartbeat!!!

I want one of these. I am actually in the process of making one out of wood. I am thinking of shaping it like a regular dock, and using a good acoustical wood. Got the idea from here.
I am thinking this would work great. Maybe take a charger and run it up so that you can plug it in, and use the acoustics of the wood to amplify the sound. Just a thought.
So there are no MicroUSB docks anywhere??
I figured someone would have made one
I've been thinking about one, and it would be cool
I guess even a dock with a USB port so one could connect the cable to it would be fine
sigh

I would think your best option would be to just get a bluetooth speaker set or one designed for the ipod and use a ipod>bluetooth adapter like this one.

I had seen one of these back a while ago but I guess I just forgot about it... That does seem like the best option. I've never used bluetooth to stream music but I assume it works well and will play with music on my SDcard as well as Slacker and the like?

Absolutely. I have a set of bluetooth headphones that are really sweet and i use them with pandora, music app, audiogalaxy etc...
My wife was asking this just the other day. She hates plugging in to the ear phone jack. I might try that bluetooth receiver idea.

I used the FIPO for quite a while (till I lost it) I think there was a guy on there that was selling them for cheap (around $10 IIRC), but it worked flawlessly every time and the sound quality was not bad at all....

Great idea, thanks man!
The problem is the HDMI out: there is no "dock" connector, just USB (which IS host capable, somewhere on that chip) and the HDMI connector.
HDMI encodes the audio into blank space of the video stream, so you need signal processing to seperate the two: that's too close to the DO NOT CROSS line for manufacturers. There aren't many products that do that (right now), and I don't know if there will be. However I found this one in my travels:
http://hinen.gmc.globalmarket.com/p...switcher-4-port-with-audio-output-165992.html
Is the only thing I can find that comes close to an audio extractor for HDMI. And it has an extra 3 inputs!
So you could get the HDMI dock, the HDMI adapter cable, this doodad, a receiver (or a digital audio to analog converter and THEN to a receiver), and then go out to your speakers. Of course that assumes the software/firmware on the EVO can just play audio out that end: because it is HDMI you would have to have a video signal of some kind going down the wire to activate the link. I suspect that last part would be the easiest part. Though, as developers would probably love something like this too.
Yet another case of DRM being a pain in the ass. in this case, we can thank Intel for being able and willing to sue companies into the ground for not following the HDMI rules.
One final note: if there is HDMI plugged in, all other audio stops (ie bluetooth, headphone jack and builtin speaker). I have not tested this, but this is what HTC said on their tech support forum when I asked.
*EDIT*
Just noticed it has stereo out, but the description is in some funny Engrish, so there is no telling if it is actually available.
*EDIT 2*
http://www.octavainc.com/HDMI switch 4port_toslink.htm
Appears to have been around for ~3 years, but almost $300 too!
*EDIT 3*

Does not seem to be vaporware, and on the first link, is $128, which is a steal coming from the pro A/V market. Kinda high for us regular consumers, but for that market it's almost free.

[Q] Connect Epic Touch to iPhone compatible car stereo?

I just got jvc car stereo http://www.bestbuy.com/site/JVC+-+5...back/4005163.p?id=1218447374174&skuId=4005163 from best buy.
It has usb port and says that I can play mp3,wma and few other formats from iphone.I tried pluging in my Epic and it doesnt recognize it.
My question is: Do anyone know if there is an app or some type of usb adaptor that I can use to play my music on iphone usb accessories?Or any other method?
All these devices are iphone compatible but we android users(majority) are left in the dust for now, although they starting to support android but cost double the price.
Try to put it in USB mode

Probably will work on my jvc,jvc and kenwood merged into one company so their stereos are almost identical. There is even jvc/kenwood app in the market that supposed to connect to kenwood receivers.
Im gonna try it tomorow and see if app and methods above work.
Most car stereos now come with an auxiliary port as well, you can play music from almost any device using an auxiliary cable.
WHat I'm looking for as a bluetooth-to-ipod-dock adaptor.
Sprint used to sell one on their website, but, I can't find anything about them anywhere. Everything takes a goddamned ipod dock. I want to get a new head unit for my truck but I refuse to pay the extra $150 for the bluetooth receiver when all I want is an am/fm radio with a blue-tooth input. screw wires.
Unless anyone knows a good $100-$150 head unit that comes with bluetooth and puts out 35-45w. Nothing fancy.

The Sony head unit I bought several months ago seems to fit that bill. You're checking Crutchfield.com right? That site is awesome for aftermarket car stereos. I think I paid $140 for the Sony XPLOD I bought with free shipping and the kit for my car included. I forget the watts, but it has Bluetooth and front USB and Aux ports. There's lots of other options around that price point from other manufactures as well.

I boycott Sony any chance I get, but, thanks for reminding me of Crutchfield. I haven't seen that name since I was a teenager and spent all of my money on my car stereo...for years, lol.
There are plenty of bluetooth options that at 14-20w, but, I think I still have an old MTX 25 watter around here that, when bridged down to 1ohm-stereo, will show those speakers who's boss.
Thanks again.
Ok so I got a Kenwood kdc-248u back about 6 months ago. At the time I was on T-mobile with my HD2 running a nice miui rom. I decided to plug my phone in to the usb port because guys like sticking things in things... Now it didn't give me track info, but it was playing what seemed like the files that were in my google music temp folder. Even lacking the track info (just showed a number) it was fantastic because I had my music on random while my phone was charging. The skip track and pause work too. I left T-mobile after the first time I was "capped" for using too much google music and at the slow speed nothing works. Hence coming to Sprint. BUT my Sammy no workie with stereo. Tried many methods including the above mentioned. I was waiting for the official release of ICS because I had read that google music and ICS are supposed to integrate better and offer usb support. But now I am running a FC14 rom and still no sign that my phone and stereo will speak the same language unless some the fine devs here decided to take up the challenge.. Cheers!!!

Sony car stereos are ****ty unless they changed in the last 3 years.I paid $90 for my jvc at bestbuy and bluetooth adapter for it costs $60(yeah thats alot),which brings it to $150 total. It got real nice sound quality,i have infinity's in the back and kenwood in the front plus I like the fact thst you can change butons and lcd colors.
I just put a Sony Mex-bt3000p in my wifes car and love the blue tooth/Pandora capabilities. Got it from crutchfield.

Mass storage mode is not available,i tried with adb off.Only thing that happens when phone pluged in is that it charges.
Maybe its the rom(Blazer 4.0)?Or is this for iphone crowd only?

I use doubletwist player from the market. The player is free, and has add on stuff you can buy lile wifi sync.... But it has a setting to use as auto usb mode. I say give ot a shot. I don't have the right stereo, so maybe you can test it for me....

A possible alternative..?
I ran across a device called a Mimic while I was building a PC into my car that might be helpful. The Android version is still in development, but the idea is right on track.
As I understand it, any phone that can export video (may require micro-HDMI...) will be able to hook up to this and the touchscreen and car speakers will become the phone's display, control and sound output.
To keep the radio / CD function of the existing head unit, the screen will have to be mounted outside the dash or as a pop-out in the 2nd slot of a double-DIN dash.
Kinda pricey, to be sure, but it at least appears to be a step in the right direction...

I checked out mimic too. Seems amazing. Only problem is I cant tear my wif away from her iphone. I was considering getting one, but I would have to buy 2 for each car (iphone and android version)... And yes, they are pricey.
