Keep Wifi awake on 80 G9 - Gen9, Gen10 General

Been scoping out an 80 G9 from Staples since it seems like as steal at $250 for what you get even though it's the regular model and not Turbo. My question is, does ICS have the option to keep the wifi awake? I realize this will use more battery and I am prepared to deal with the extra loss. I just want to get my emails right away rather than having to wake up the device and wait for them to arrive.
Also, is there an notification light on it for emails etc..? Anyone use the Staples version of the tab and how do you like it? Getting the full 8 hours of battery life?
Thanks all.

No notification LED
ICS does have keep wifi awake at wifi>menu>advanced

Hello,
after the update to 4.06 the wifi connection disconnects very often when the tablet goes into standby. I set wifi awake in the settings, but it does not work.

Hello BubbaRob,
I just got that Archos 80 G9 Classic (8GB, 1GHz, 512MB RAM) from Staples (they're having a sale on it this week for $199 plus I had a $25 off coupon so it was a nice deal).
Yes, it does have that "Keep WiFi Always On During Sleep" under the WiFi Advanced settings and it works for me getting email notifications (sound only, no LED light) even when the screen is off. I normally don't use that setting as unlike you, I want to maximize battery power so I have that setting as "WiFi Never On During Sleep" along w/ the Battery "Deep Sleep" option checked - with this mode, I haven't had to charge the battery for 4 days now (10+ hrs usage).
FYI, I'm on firmware ICS 4.0.6 - hope that helps.

Wifi drains too much battery?

I've bought Desire 4 days ago.
I've been running in some battery problems a lot. I've heard that battery should have 4-5 full draining and charging before having its max capacity, but I have a life span of about 16-20 hours of battery with Wi-Fi on.
How i found out that: Yesterday I went to the country and messed around with my gps and navigation (never used one, so felt like a little child with a brand new shiny toy). So the battery went dead and i charged it almost full. When i got home i turned the wifi on. Didn't manage to connect to my home network, due to Android still not supporting Ad-Hoc networks (sharing through my notebook) so i didn't bother more and used my data plan, but forgot to turn off the wifi.
In about 2 hours, the battery was nearly 60% from 90. When i went to see what's draining the battery I saw it was the Wifi. I turned it off and since last night, up to now (about 14 hours) the battery is 50% (only 10 percent for 14 hours).
Is there any way to make the phone not scan so agressively for Wifi when it's on ? I'm comming from iphone and it didn't matter too much if i had my wifi on or off there.
First of all, what you're experiencing is normal.
In fact, dropping only 30% with 2 straight hrs of heavy use is actually quite impressive.
If you don't want your device to scan for wifi, turn it off. Simple as that. Keep the WiFi setting widget on one of your homescreens for easy access.
It wasn't heavy use I killed all apps and left it there. 30% are just from WiFi scanning.
I know I must turn off wifi, i have the widgy button, but sometimes i just forget i have to shut it down. (Though that's a bit killing, since i didn't have to do this on my iPhone. Actually this is the only shortcoming i can think of now, great phone. Seems i have to get used to killing extra stuff )
Sadly i couldn't find an option to tell it to scan on rarer occasion, just to help absent-minded people like me.
Try downloading "Y5 - Battery Saver" from the Market.
It automatically switches WiFi on and off depending on your location (as determined by cell location, not GPS).
It allows you to leave WiFi in locations where you know you have WiFi, and automatically switches it off when you leave those locations.
I've installed it, but not exhaustively tested as yet as I've not really been out of WiFi coverage since I installed it.
Regards,
Dave
Try getting the WiFi On/Off widget from the market.
It lets you turn off the WiFi with one touch. Will save you a lot of battery when not using it.
@Gana1991 - i've already noted that i have the widget (no need to download from market)
@foxmeister - thanks, i will try that. (I have been secretly thinking about some app with this function )
indeed, there is a WIFI widget builtin.
If you really want another widget, check the WiFi Toggle by "JQ Soft", nice design.
The Y5-Battery Saver is nice....it seems to work properly.
But i am affraid it was causing some problems here, so i uninstalled.
I will reinstall and do some more tests.
WI-FI usage is actually much better than using the network which drains the battery more.
But deffo only have on when using, not all the time.
Or you'd use the standard HTC energy widged or the android wifi switch wich can be found @ widged -> settings -> wifi
Put the HTC battery widget on the screen, not only does it show what % you have left but selecting the widget pops up a small menu where you can adjust display, turn on /off WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth, vey handy indeed
I leave my WiFi on all the time at home because of the data constantly changing between G/3G it drains the battery amazingly fast. leaving WiFi on helps me save battery and keep a data connection. I took my phone off charge at 9 this morning, WiFi has been enabled all day and I have 80% battery.
once the battery has had a week or 2 of charging it will run loads better. also charging with the phone switched off gets you a bit more juice because of a firmware problem.

Where is this battery widget? I cant find it anywhere.
Oops, didnt know i had to look for it on the market. Found it.
Go settings, wifi, menu button and this brings up advanced settings. From there you can disable wifi after 15 mins of inactivity. When the phone wakes wifi kicks in. I have data turned off, wifi turned off, but if I forget to turn wifi off after using it, it's not too bad as it will be deactivated.
What's that widget called? All I can find is the power widget.
Ok found it
Only seems to be a meter though, no adjustments?
Go settings, wifi, then WiFi settings, then press the menu button,. From their you can select advanced WiFi settings.

If you were using your data plan then your wifi wouldn't be on as the phone turns it off when your connected via 3G, it only uses one or the other not both at the same time.
That's the way it is on my Desire.
I've not used WiFi at all today yet apparently its consumed 25% of my battery. I've got it switched off via widget and its also set to disable after 15 minutes of inactivity.
Any thoughts?
thanks for any help
It's just occurred to me that perhaps the percentages run and run and are not reset after a charge?
Anyone know how it works?

[Q] Battery discharged 100% -> 11% in 1h with Villain 0.9 ROM ?!

[Edit: Headline with typing error: "17 hours" is correct. Sorry for that.]
Hi everyone!
As I am a new member I am not allowed to post to the Development thread ("[ROM-GingerBread] Ginger Villain 0.9 Camcorder working (24-01)") to ask my question.
I hope this is the right position for my question...
I flashed to "Ginger Villain 0.9" yesterday in the afternoon, unplugged my charger having a fully charged device close to midnight.
Nine hours later the battery was down to 51%. This was during night, where I was not using the device.
Background sync and WiFi was on, even if the WiFi-network is off in the night.
I did not switch off WiFi with the original Sense-ROM (Froyo) or with the LeeDroid (2.3d) I used before, but I had to charge the device all 2-3 days - using it more than I did today.
Coming to the questions:
Is this fast discharging only a problem on my device, or do others have this as well?
What could be the reason for this?
Hope you can help me.
I've had GV0.9 on for a few days and not noticed any real difference in battery life. Before that I was on LeeDroid, before that stock HTC.
First day on GV I got about 39 hours. Pretty light use but that does include some wifi, and GPS with a running app. Pretty much exactly what I was getting before.
Today it's showing about 60% charged after 15 hours with again some browsing, music playback and general use.
What radio and kernel do you have? Also on the about phone - battery use screen where does most of the usage come from?
Edited to add
Go into wireless and networks, wifi settings, menu and see if you have wifi sleep policy set to 'never' - this is a known battery drain issue

so if it is set to never it will drain your battery? so i should set it too the 15 minute option to conserve battery?
Night #2: Better, but still bad.
WiFi ist set to disconnect while screen is switched off.
I did not notice this option (Menu/Advanced) before, thanks for this hint.
Since the last unplugging from the charger the device discharged from 95% to 38% right now, in a time span of 14 hours.
Around 30min of this I was checking e-mails or browsing - all via mobile network.
WiFi was switched off the last night, I lost 27% in 8 hours.
Which e-Mail clients are you using?
I used the HTC-Sense mail with the stock ROM and LeeDroid, now I am using K-9 mail. Collecting mails is set to a 30min cycle. With K-9 Push (IMAP) is active, but I don't remind what was set with Push under Sense-Mail.
What are your settings?
Sorry, confused you there. You need to set the wifi sleep policy to 'never'. Anything else will cause battery drain.
Se if you have 100% cpu with quick system info!
Do you sync your Music ????

Thanks, setting WiFi sleep policy to "never" saved battery a lot!
I set this option and charged the phone to 100%.
It lost only 41% in 44 hours.
With WiFi on, even at night. As well with mobile data connection, IMAP Push, sending of 3 SMS and one 2-3 Minutes phone call.
No, I don't sync any music.
These WiFi-options are doing the exact opposite of what they are supposed to do?!

Why does the "Best WiFi performance" setting drain the battery so much?

When I got my Dinc2 last week I automatically ticked the "Best WiFi performance" checkbox in the WiFi advanced settings, without thinking about it much. But then I realized it must be the WiFi setting that's draining my the battery so quickly overnight. As an example, during a 7-hr period last night with hardly any email polling, my battery drained from 50% to only 15% capacity (that's about 5% per hour). My wife's original Inc only dropped 2-3% during the same period, sitting right beside mine. And you could see the graph in my battery stats take a constant straight-line nosedive from the moment I turned the WiFi on. So I unchecked the "best performance" feature immediately this morning, and will see how the phone performs tonight without it.
What does this "Best performance" setting do? Is it only necessary for something with a high data need like VoIP or media streaming?
Thx,

Its on the stock sense rom and I have seen it on Skyraider Zeus' roms.
Settings > Wireless & networks > WiFi Settings > (press menu button at bottom) > Advanced
It's buried deep in the settings.
I wonder if it decreases the wifi scan interval? That would certainly explain the battery drain.

Right you are. And because my Dinc2 is only a week old, it's still running the stock 2.1 Sense rom on Gingerbread 2.3.4
Tonight I'll start some testing... one night with the "standard" performance WiFi, the next night without any WiFi (or 3g) on.

So the results are in. Over the past 3 nights, I let my phone sit overnight in different wifi configs, to get an idea of the effects of the different WiFi configurations. In each case with the same minimal email polling and no other main apps running. It's a brand new phone, running 2.3.4 and Sense 2.1 (I haven't rooted it yet).
It turns out that Sense's "Best performance" WiFi setting eats up battery at a MUCH higher rate than anything else, approximately 10x hungrier than the regular wifi settings or no wifi or 3g at all. And the regular WiFi setting uses virtually no battery when there's nothing much downloading. Here's the raw data:
Best performance WiFi > 7 hrs produced a 35% drop in battery (5% per hour)
Regular WiFi (Best perf unchecked) > 10 hrs produced a 2% drop (0.2% per hour)
Both WiFi and 3g off > 7.5 hrs produced 2% drop (0.26% per hour)
So it's the regular WiFi config for me; YMMV.

Hmm... It has been a while since I ran stock, so I am not sure what 2.3.3 said, but on that ROM, I found that the settings performed similarly to the AOSP Android Wifi Sleep Policy. So Maximum Performance = never shut wifi off and the normal setting shuts off wifi when the screen is off. I never ran stock 2.3.4, so not sure about that one. On 2.3.3 I always had mine on Maximum performance because I use a lot of background data and having wifi on the whole time uses less battery than all the 3g would use overnight.
So, unless something changed, Regular shuts off wifi with the screen and max performance keeps it on all the time.
And stock I would only drop about 2-4% overnight with wifi on max and everything syncing. So unless something changed to 2.3.4, then something is either over-using your wifi because it is available or there is something else at play.
At any rate, everyone's usage is different, so use what works for you.
Actually I have the sleep policy set to never turn WiFi off and hand back to 3g... mostly because I use the "Unlock with WiFi" app and I don't want the phone relocking just 'cause the WiFi went to sleep. So Sense's "best performance" setting must do something else.
Who knows; I don't need better WiFi throughput so I'll stick with the regular WiFi settings which don't drain battery juice hardly at all when you're not actively using it.

Hmm... Must be a 2.3.4 thing. I don't remember it from 2.3.3. Maybe I just forgot about it, but I don't remember seeing it because I would have enabled it. I need some wifi boost at times. I am wondering if it is setting the wifi to keep it at max tx/rx power... Maybe if I can get some time I will try to see what I can find in the code.
---------- Post added at 10:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:38 PM ----------
Well I checked the xml real quick as I am not at a workstation with all my software on it and 2.3.3 had it too. I always set the sleep policy right away, so it is possible I just set it and forgot about it.
I will see what I can drum up about what it does, as I am curious. If it is some sort of power boost, maybe it can be adapted to AOSP.

So -
I just discovered this setting. I was downloading some google music after returning to Andy Bones Stock Rom - and figured I would give it a go.
When I get home, I am gonna use the speedtest app to see if I can actually move data faster or not. It seems like that would not be true, but who knows.
The setting DEFINITELY crushes the battery. It seems to be really fast DL (especially for pulling a large number of music files) but... I have no empirical verification for that claim.
Testing to come.
I found I average 1-2 mbps faster without it.

batery life

Hi, how its your average batery life?
I have never really run any tests for it, but i've left the tablet alone for a few days, just sometimes checking for Firmware updates, and it barely lost 30% (maybe less, can't recall).
with no live wallpapers on mine lasts a few days with moderate use (checking email, rss, news, maybe playing a couple games)
Well i got the Archos 80 G9 250 gb version and mine lasted for 4.5 hours of continuous video playing , screen brightness on 50 % . The problem is that even in deep sleep it looses battery . How can it last for a couple of days i can't understand , any hint ?
I have the flash version, maybe that would make a difference. Check the wifi sleep policy, and make sure it turns off during sleep. Also, I keep bluetooth and gps off. perhaps try that?
I have the basic 80 g9 and for just using it the evenings it will be happy to last for 4/5 days with email, twitter simple games etc. When I've travelled with it in 3 hours of video playback I lose about 50% with no connections such as WiFi or 3g.

In the meantime you close the tablet or put it on deep sleep ?
I just hit the power button and leave it. Like I say don't think I've messed with the deep slept setting but can look for ya later if you want.

Well actually i didn't checked that but i have the impression that mine looses a lot of battery in suspend mode .... I always shut it down and even like this when i start it again its not the same as it was .... maybe the actual starting process uses a lot of power don't know
Could be a rogue app. My phone was like that for ages and it was getjar nit letting the phone sleep properly. Try better battery stats or something similar to see if a service is causing partial or kernel weaklocks too frequently
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
The 80G9 1.5 GHz turbo I just started using is to new for me to get an idea of run time, so far about 8 hours of mixed use, on my 8gb classic would go between 5.5 to 9 hours depending on use, in deep sleep non use, it would go for days at least
What works for me, on best battery management, I like to put into deep sleep every time I put tablet down and plan not to use for a few minutes or more (this turns of Wi-Fi, screen, and stops mosts things from running) it always wakes up with a quick power press and Wi-Fi connects within a few seconds
I use normal sleep (same as when it times out I think) for quick pauses in use.
normal sleep for when not using but charging if I want to hear notifications for email, Color Note, Evernote etc. (Wi-Fi on)
If I want the quickest charge, (not using, overnight etc.) and I don't care about notifications (Wi-Fi off) I use deep sleep. edit, to be clear on notifications, my Color Note notifications work while in deep sleep
Turn off for longer periods not being charged/ used
You can set when Wi-Fi disconnects by going to:
settings, Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi disconnect policy (I have mine on never for now)
*and of course, use the correct cable and charger!

Battery life

I am suprised, there still is no battery life thread.
People must be very happy with their battery lifes or nobody is buying this tablet
I do have one big issue with battery life.
WIFI is the biggest battery hog, using 2-3 times more battery than the screen.
For 3 hours WIFI roughly 1400mAh.
So I only manage like 5 hours of SOT.
Btw. I have set WIFI to be disabled, when the screen is off.
Any suggestions?
I haven't had mine off charge long enough to really be able to comment about this yet but I can't complain with it so far.
Mine seems good so far. Had one freeze as you can see. 33% left.

Still, I think it is strange (as seen in your screen shots), that WIFI accounts for almost half of your battery usage. And 5+ hours SOT is only 6%?
Could you be so kind and post the screen for wifi too, so we can see the "computed power use"?
When looking at my phone, wifi is at 52 mAh power use over an 18 hour period, on this tablet it is 2700 mAh for 10 hours.
An alarming discrepancy.
Or am I missing something?

I really don't know. You may be right.
I guess the high wifi in battery stats is a reporting error / miscalculation. I have wiped the cache partition in recovery (to fix my ambient light sensor) and ever since wifi is at the bottom of my battery list.
And I did not get any better SOT, so there could not have been any real battery drain from wifi even when it held the top spot in the stats.
Still disappointed with only 4-5h SOT.
Thanks everybody for helping out.

my understanding of how android has utilized the wifi sleep policy is that its best to leave wifi always on when sleep. It will use more battery to reconnect to the wifi network when it is woken up and disconnect when sleeping.
Any sources to support your theory? I'd like to read up on it more.
Info I've always followed. This is from 2011 as well:
"This tip is one that seems counter-intuitive, but you can save a lot of wear and tear on your Android phone's battery if you tell it to keep the Wifi radio turned on and connected while the phone is sleeping. Your phone needs a lot of juice to keep pinging those cell towers, and even more to transmit data to and from them. Wifi radios use much less power because of their design, and they don't have to keep searching for a better access point. It's the way cellular data communication was designed, and it's a necessary evil.
But what if you're spending all day (or all evening) in one place, connected to Wifi? If you tell your phone to shut off Wifi when idle, it bounces back to cellular data (be it 2G, 3G, or 4G) and starts sucking down the electrons again when the screen shuts off. That's no good, and easy to fix:
Open the advanced Wifi settings by pressing the menu button, then Settings, Wireless & networks, Wi-Fi settings, and tapping the menu button again. You'll have a choice to either Scan, or go Advanced -- go Advanced.
Tap the Wi-Fi sleep policy entry, and you'll get a pop up dialog with the choices you see in the picture above. Choose Never.
Now even when your phone goes into standby mode, you'll stay connected to Wifi and be able to get mail and messages without turning the cell radio back on and trouncing your battery life. And for the times when you're not in an area with a Wifi connection, just shut Wifi off, either through the menu or with a handy toggle widget. Your battery will thank you for it."

I know that leaving WiFi on runs your battery down on any device when its connected and it takes all of 2-3 seconds to connect. No reason to leave it on full time when your not using it. Also, the device is continuously checking and sending small amounts of data to maintain that connection.
Were talking about the pixel here and not a cellular device.
Pretty happy with the C.
I haven't really payed attention to how long this device lasts, I use it pretty casually so it lasts me up to a week. I have used it to stream movies and it has lasted me the whole day (8 hours) watching movies with about 30% left. Compared to other tablets I've had including the nexus 9 this one blows them all away. My old nexus 9 would die after a few episodes (about an hour)

I streamed a good 6 hours of a live feed on battery and the device used around 50%, can not complain with the battery life at all with this device

No, just WiFi, don't have a keyboard.
As a heads up, there appears to be a WiFi issue with MM itself. I'm seeing the same issue on my Nexus 7 2013 running a MM ROM, and I found a thread online talking about it...maybe from the Android Central forums or something, I can't remember now. People seem to be unsure as to whether or not WiFi is actually causing a battery drain, or if it's just reporting incorrectly. But at least on my N7, the battery can drop 40-50% in one day while on standby, and when I have WiFi set to Off when it's sleeping. And I used to get DAYS of standby time before going to MM.
Edit: Here's an XDA thread about it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/guys-call-wifi-battery-drain-6-0-t3219870
I had the same issue with WiFi battery bug on the nexus 5. Fixed it via router by turning off the auto disconnect (the option where router decides if a device can connect based on signal strength) on both 2ghz and 5ghz. After this the Wifi went back down to the bottom of the battery list. Long shot, and most likely not even related, but hope it helps anyone.
On a Asus rt router.
