Tidying-up/over-hauling the stickies etc - Defy General

Over the next few days, I'm going to do a bit of tidying up in the various Defy sections.
The first part of that involves a new sticky in each section clearly stating what that section is for, what threads are or are not appropriate (ie no questions in the Dev section).
Hopefully this'll help cut down on the number of threads that need moving.
The proposed second part I would like some feedback on...
The act of stickying certain threads/guides/etc I've always found a little hit-and-miss and can inadvertently lead to unintended favouritism, not to mention you can eventually end up with a ridiculous number of threads stickied.
So the idea I had was that in the General and Dev sections (the two that currently have stickied threads), those threads would be un-stickied and replaced with a roll-up thread - kinda like this except there would be no other threads stickied along with it (other than the one mentioned in the first part that would explain the purpose of the section).
It's just a way of trying to keep the section as tidy as possible, though it's not the messiest, which is why I'm not 100% set on going ahead and would prefer to hear what people think.

A little clean up is a good idea.
I'm for a main roll-up thread in every section, that way the useful guides/infos will be easier to find/edit.

Seems good. I myself have two popular guides in the general section you can't have missed (soft-sim unlock and double boot). How will the roll-up thread work exactly?

Best thing for now is to report the thread for maintance/moving that's what i have been doing with the dev section
Thanks again Step666 for cleaning up the ones i reported...... +1 on the rollup thread thread it makes things a lot easier for new users as they can find everything in one thread.

support the idea fully (both), but have to ask for something: to always keep that one stickied thread up-to-date, otherwise it has no sense. and the thread you linked didnt mention the 'all-in-one defy beginners guide' which i find very useful for everybody, so i think that should be involved too. and thanks for looking after the defy section, it did get quite messy over the last few weeks, months.

Is it possible to have two xda members governing one same thread? It would be best to keep a thread up to date if two people where allowed to edit the OP. Could it be possible?

It would list all the current guides that are to be found in our Defy forums at the moment
Voted for the roll-up thread. What suggestions could we have about it? Like, which threads should be included?

I hate it when someone quotes the OP's post after 20-30 pages only to ask a question whose answer was in the previously 20-30 unread pages. Also, when someone quotes a really LONG post only to add a short answer/joke/offtopic question or a smiley and an encouragement.

Similar to the one I linked-to, with a series of links to useful guides etc - except I'd probably go a step further and include a short description of what each thread contained.
There'd be one in this section and one in the Dev section.

I agree.
And that's where I'd need your help - whilst I own a Defy my primary handset now is my Galaxy Nexus, so I'm just not as clued up on things here as the rest of you.
So whilst I'd do my best to keep it updated, if there was a thread you felt was missing from the roll-up, then you'd be best to PM me and I could add it.

Unfortunately, there's no way to force people to pay attention/follow the rules/behave like vaguely-competent individuals.
So all we can do is react to people who have posted in the wrong section.

No, unfortunately the forum software doesn't allow for that.
I guess an alternative would be to have the 'roll-up' lists in the Defy Wiki where anyone can edit them and I would just have a link to them from the one sticky in each section.

Ha - good catch, so long as there is a Q&A section to post the question in....
I assume the OP may want to "post a question" in a development thread maybe about a rom he's using or a kernel or any other valid development-related question. so why flame him for not reading. I assume we are all here to learn, or am I wrong?
Pls help the guy out, if he needs help.

Questions are not supposed to be in development threads as weird as that sounds. Only feedback and bug reports are meant to go on those threads. If he has questions, he needs to ask in the Q&A section.
The Galaxy Ace forum has no Q&A section.

Perhaps the device has less than 10k posts or 1k threads in general last time anyone checked?
Perhaps the device is too crap to get a Q & A, or perhaps I'm trolling? (hint - it's the first option)
Access?
I can access XDA from my computer, but I can't access it from my Phone. I've got a Samsung Captivate and I have tried clearing caches and actually uninstalling and then reinstalling the XDA app, both regular and premium and still it won't hook up. I can access the internet and google market and such, the only problem I have is connecting up with XDA. Is it me or is there an issue with the site?

Development Threads. Please keep comments in general.

A mod has had to delete a thread for maintainance and explicitly tell people not to post off topic only to have the same thing just continue one thread over in the racing build thread unless that is really 13 pages of useful information. Instead of telling to people to stay on topic and continue the trend I made this post.
Could everyone keep the dev threads to dev posts. If you have a bug make a logcat. If you want to say thanks start a single thanks thread in general, I am not sure if thats kosher but at least if the mods have a problem with such thanks thread they can just delete it without having to go through and look for actually useful posts.

but do not CLUTTER the Development topic with comments that provides no value in the development.

Wait, what? How does that logic work?
It is easier for us to to go through and report each post so that a moderator is forced to look over each one and decide if it should be deleted or not than it would for people to act responsible for their own crap and just not post worthless stuff in a dev thread?
Sure it might be easier for me to just report each post instead of trying to educate anyone, but now because one person is doing whatever they please I have to report them AND a moderator has to take the time to go and delete it.

I have a quick question in regards to that RaverX thread that just closed:
For those of us that DO want to follow the rules and prefer to follow the progress of the ROM, where do we go from here? I know the ROM is on sourceforge, so I can at least see if there are updates.
Should this have just been a PM, or are there others that share this curiosity?
ICS is awesome, but a lot of n00bs I have never seen post a single comment around here started posting out of nowhere lol.

There's no need. You may as well delete it. First off, most likely you won't get a reply because currently alpha0 is the latest version. Next, you've listed problems that developer is fully aware of and is working to fix them. Patience is needed. alpha1 is out on Saturday. You should pay attention to the forum posts for CM9.

MOD EDIT: BEFORE POSTING ANY THREAD IN THE DEVELOPMENT SECTION, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:
If you have developed a ROM, or are working with others to do so, the development forum is somewhere to discuss and share ideas, post useful feedback and logs or crash dumps, and to discuss a common goal developers are trying to achieve.
It is NOT the place to post your question because it gets higher traffic, or because more experienced users frequent it. Doing this just annoys those who are working on the device, and drives them away. Developers don't want to wade through 20 threads of "Help me urgently" to find their threads for porting and fixing camera issues etc. Similarly, if a thread is designated as discussion for developers say, porting a camera fix, please do not post in there asking "When will it be ready?", "Can I flash this yet?" etc. This is both completely disrespectful to those working on the project (you evidently haven't read the important posts in the thread), and also is making it harder for developers to find comments from other developers or testers when required.

Take a look in the Development section
The KF is not an OG nor is it from the CPT.
There is no current AOKP. You can use the pure AOSP r1 build, Official CM10.1 nightly, cm10.1 w/ SGT7, or any of the other roms in dev section.

@Xplorer4x4,
With this kind of attitude, you will get no where near help you need in XDA, not only in this sub-forum but XDA in general.
There is no rule forcing you not to post but you MUST find the answer on your own, no one here will help you look for it if you don't even do a little homework yourself.
How many AOKP THREAD in the Development section? Find your own answer. READ.
For your info, trolling like this won't get you far in life either so change your attitude if you can. It will help you.

There is an old saying, you have to give respect to get respect. I came in, asked a simple question to make sure I did not over look something when I SEARCHED the dev forum, Instead I get a response like "Take a look in the Development section " I mentioned this in my op, all be it discreetly. Then I get a smart ass answer like "The KF is not an OG nor is it from the CPT." Perhaps this was intentended to be humorous but text on a screen often has a way of being misinterpreted. Had a "lol" a "" or something of that degree ben included, maybe I would have picked up on the attempt at humor. Since I fail to see the humor, you tell me, who got attitude first? Then asf58967 keeps coming back to the thread to provide more derogative comments. I subscribed to the thread to get updates. What's his excuse?

For your info, trolling like this won't get you far in life either so change your attitude if you can. It will help you.

lol trolling? I actually had a reason to keep coming back to the thread. You might want to take the rose colored glasses off and read the thread again. Furthermore, I been a member here for 3 years and have under 80 posts. I would say I don't require much help.
I do development outside of android, so I understand fully the thought process behind search first, ask second. It drive me up a frigin wall, and is part of the reason I abandoned my former projects. You know why I search first, a number of reasons but the most important answer is that searching will often get you an instant answer rather then sitting on your ass waiting what could be hours for some one to reply.

Not sure if you are serious or sarcastic, but as far as I can tell...no. Which surprises me. From my understanding of android development, Hascode has all the drivers and such working so it shouldn't be hard to port that to the AOKP base. I can understand if the original dev did not have time to maintain it but I am surprised no one else has picked it up.

Listen man, I am sorry you have been so offended. Yes the OG from CPT was a joke. I live in los Angeles near the CPT. The bottom Line is people here participate ALOT and the spirit of xda is based on finding knowledge before posting a thread - that way all new threads end up useful, as opposed to there being 5000 threads of "how do I root my Kindle" or "is there an AOSP ROM".

You can only post in non development threads. Just help 10 people in the Q&A threads and you will be fine.

Promotion may be delayed a bit. Be patient, this is to prevent spammers from making 10 quick posts and spamming all over the place

Not being able to post is a good time to use the search button. Wont it be awesome to say "I found the answer myself!" ?
A tip : I find the xda app search to k8nd of suck (sorry guys its true) so either use "web view" or what I do isvuse google and put xda as a constant key word.
The thing is, a lot of times everything is found in your devices q&a section. And you dont need to havev10 posts for that.
Also most device forums tell you "all q&a go in the q&a sub forum" as part of the devices forums rules.
Are you like me and love to help ?
(hey dont roll your eyes me! )
Why not hang out in q&a for a bit?
You can help other and ask all your questions!
Great way to build up your post count!

If you have problems and you need the help of others to solve them then more likely than not your question belongs in the Q&A forum for your device. If you want to answer questions then you can do that in the Q&A as well. Either way, you'll either not need 10 posts because you have nothing to post in a dev thread or you'll easily be able to manage 10 posts because you are a dev and find it easy to answer questions.
Be patient...make the posts on home/forum/general,android,Q&A.....you can't on any device on development forum
That is a good point it seems like every where I try to post is not aloud I don't wanna be intrusive on threads just need some help
You wont find any help posting questions in the development threads anyway. All you will get is a bunch of people telling to post in the Q&A section.
I wish there was an easier way myself. I have been coming here since 2010 to read and find answers, but when I recently had an issue I couldn't find discussed I found I couldn't post.
I ubder stand though.

Look through the q&a section and answer questions and help people. You've been around long enough to know stuff, it shouldn't be hard to put out some effort to help..

You've been a member of XDA for three years and this is the first part you've made! Hardly joining in with the community is it!
By now you should be an expert on your device, so get out there and HELP others in your device's forum with their problems. You'll easily get to 10 posts if you share some of your knowledge :banghead:
Man Man..we already have 2 threads with same meaning & different titles.
1st one -> Alternative to 10 post rule
2nd one -> 10 post RULE is it helpful or harmful - Closed
Now, this is created again. I think we must ask MOD to take necessary action.

Well. I had an original Droid back then. I switched over to iOS for some time and now I'm back on Android.
With a Note 2, Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus all rooted and with alternate ROMs I have more reason to stick around now.

work for my 10 post, open my block..
I think this thread has served its purpose and is becoming a hub for new people to complete 10 posts. How about a lock?
A Hero Can Be Anyone.
the development section has the custom roms though which is the only way to get help on installation from the creators

I don't know what you're talking about, the installation instructions are always in the first post..

And even if they somehow aren't, there are numerous guides for flashing every device so you should never have to ask a question like that in the first place.
