Phone case causes echo - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Its been a while since someones posted about this, its not like this is brand new but id like to see if i could get help bringing resolution to this. Ppl who call me or who i call hear themselves echoing like mad, speakerphone seems to stop it, but the only way to make it go away on the handset is to remove the phones case.
Its said the noise reduction feature is the cause, but I found that to not be the case. Its only happened since flashing racings ICS. Has anyone found any work arounds? I've searched and came up empty

so there was no problems with other ROMs?
if not then it's not the phone, i've read up on couple instances that it was the phone's fault.
Have you tried making a fresh wipe? Maybe that will help some things.
Remember when you put it on speakerphone.. the microphone is on the TOP of the phone, so the handset mic and the speakphone mic are completely different. maybe fiddle around with the case on the bottom where the mic is and see if that fixes it.

No one reported any issues to me with any other rom, may have to try wiping a few things. Either that or take an exacto knife to my case
Edit: exacto knife didn't work

Dropped G2, Now Speaker sounds weird

Hi everyone.
I accidentally dropped my phone as I was getting out of my car (damn that new coat with all it's pockets!).
Now I noticed that at full volume, the speaker is really hard to understand, and at about 1/3 volume it becomes clearer- but the person becomes harder to hear in terms of loudness.
At full volume it's as though the person on the other side is talking with their lips on the mic and really loudly.
Does anyone know if it's possible to replace the speaker, or what could have caused this? I am familiar with taking the phone apart. I've done it a number of times, but I'm just wondering if it even makes sense to try at this point.
thnx
EDIT: I found this.

anyone install one of these? requires desoldering, I guess?
I dont think it requires anything really besides opening. I believe that when I swapped my spring the speaker is on the back side of the phone and the entire motherboard is seperate on front side.
thanks scott.
you're correct. no soldering. it has two spring-bent type contacts and it looks like there is a metal bracket around the speaker that has 4 indentations to hold the speaker down over 4 small cavities in the speaker body.
should be easy.
and i found it for 2 bucks to boot!
Yea, replacing the speaker is very easy. First take off the back (4 screws) and then I think there is one more screw to get the speaker loose. But I don't remember exactly. Might be none.

Echo problem

All my callers are saying they have any echo when they are on the phone with me. Narrowed it down and it appears to be due to the bottom microphone on the phone. My new case apparently makes it go crazy even though it has a hole for the microphone. My other cases seem to have no problem. It's so weird this case does when it has a hole for the microphone larger than the other case. Anyone got any thoughts other than tossing the case? Could it a microphone problem?
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
So when you make a call without the case on it's fine? If so before just getting rid of the case you should try cutting the hole out bigger or something.
Is it covering the top microphone? This is used for noise and echo cancellation, if you have this enabled in Phone's settings. If it is covering this, try toggle the feature off and see if it improves.
odd problem, had the same issue, with speaker phone and bluetooth.
you know what it was (on my behalf atleast) the SIM, went into the AT&T store and got a new sim issued..
weird.

I have traced the problem down to being the bottom microphone on the phone. I did this by covering the bottom one with the case off and it produced the echo on the other end of the line. When the case is off, there is no echo. When you put it back on it is back.
The hole in my case is pretty big for both microphones. I don't see what making the holes bigger will do. It really has me stumped. I did research on the web and it turns out this is pretty common in Galaxy phones. However, there is no good solution.
Some folks just stop using cases. Others got a new sim as you alluded to. Others it started working better. And some just returned their phone.
On the SIM card issue, did it matter if you had a case on your phone or not when you had an echo? Since mine is related to the case and microphone, I wonder if the SIM would have any affect?

it would be worse if i put the person on speaker phone.. so i dont know how it could be the sim, (with or without a case) but it worked better with new sim.
possible fix for echo problem
This may be worth a try to fix your echo problem. Open her up and pad the mic.

Galaxy Note 3 Mic issues

My galaxy note 3 mic doesn't work when I try to talk on a call or using Google now. It does work when I record a video so I am wondering if there is multiple mics and what mic would I need to replace for talking on my phone.
Thanks!

Have you contacted Samsung support? If a mic is not working it sounds like a hardware defect.
Same problem - How I resolved it
Sorry for bumping a kind of old post, but anyway...
I had the same problem with the mic not working on my note 3 since the day i bought it, I bought my Note 3 used off Craigslist, and when I got home I realized that the microphone didn't work on calls, but worked just fine on speaker phone. I was somewhat annoyed by this, thinking I got screwed on craigslist again. But instead of throwing a fit about it, I just ordered another charging port / microphone thinking that would solve the problem. I installed it when it arrived, all excited like, only to find out that this didnt fix the problem. I read several posts on this forum and others, many offering what seemed to be viable solutions, disabling noise reduction, cleaning out the mic hole with a pin and so on, none of these worked, the problem still continued.
So tonight I set out on a mission to find the cause of the problem and i did just that... I started by taking my phone apart so that I could clean the mic hole from the inside as well as cleaning the little screen / filter on the inside of the mic hole and stuff like that, I was working in an area that had awkward lighting (my patio), and so I was having to move the phone in different ways so I could see down around the microphone, while doing that I noticed the light glimmering around the area of the mic hole, on the inside, I looked a little closer and I could see that there was definitely something there. I picked at it with my tweezers and what came up, a piece of clear plastic that resembled the plastic you find wrapped around the edges of new electronics, it was about 1/8in wide and 1" long, and it was covering the mic hole.
After removing the plastic, I reassembled my phone and tested it, now the mic works great. it seems that samsung put this thin plastic there to keep things out of the microphone, and it works well, it keeps everything out of the microphone, including the sound of your voice..
Now my Note 3 is what it was supposed to be from the day I bought it, an awesome phone. Prior to tonight its been a regretful purchase and disappointing upgrade to my Note 2, which I had regretted getting rid of, until now...

Hi, thanks for great troubleshooting.
I was hoping you have a picture of the problem area, since I have an issue with my speakerphone. People cannot hear me properly when on speakerphone. I may have to fix the microphone as well on my good old Note 3.

Easy fix to fix when people can't hear you talking but you can hear them

There's a small hole beside the charging port on the left side which causes this problem when anything gets put in it or somehow gets in there and blocks the hole. Easy fix is to take a needle or bread tie and put in the hole gently and remove anything in there. Once you do that the people your talking to will be able to hear you speaking loud and clear. It's something that barely happens but does happen none the least. Even if your not experiencing problems with people hearing you talking to them I'd still recommend cleaning the tiny hole. OK that's about it from me for now. Hopes this helps someone.

Samsung S9 echo problems after battery replacement

Hi
I just replaced the battery on my Samsung Galaxy S9 phone. After the battery replacement people calling me (regular phone calls) complaints about hearing an echo of their selves. I'm able to fix this by removing the back glass cover (the one that is glued on) but as soon as I put the back glass cover back people calling me hear them selves again. So I'm not sure if I have broken anything on the back cover itself when I replaced the battery or if I have broken anything related to the speaker or mic here? If I put people on speaker there is no echo, and if I use bluetooth headset everything is working fine as well.
I'm guessing this is hardware related so the question is which hardware component I should replace here?
Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Seems some kind of crosstalk related to mic or antenna. You shouldn't have reapired by yourself.
So a replacement of the antenna and charging coil module could potentially fix this? If so I think that is a bit odd since both wireless charging and antenna coverage seems to be OK. Also, as I've mentioned there are no echo if I remove the back cover.

rather presumptuous of you to say that they shouldnt have repaired it themselves.

many of the mics ive seen while doing the many repairs ive done have little rubber footings or adhesive foam rubber isolation material around or on them, did you get all of the stuff put back where its supposed to go?
I took another look at the rubber footing of the mic that you mentioned. I also noticed the little "rubber net thing" on right hand side of the mic seems a bit melted - not sure if this could play any part?
Again, what is really puzzling is that the error occurs only after I've firmly put some pressure on the back cover after mounting it (so that it is glued back on). If I loosely put it on people don't hear the echo of them selves.
Any idea?
ps. I've got some pictures of the inside of the phone but since I'm new to this forum I'm not able to post pictures yet. Please let me know if there are any other methods of sharing the photos and I'll be glad to share.
