[How to] Configure Terminal Emulator to use Correct BusyBox & Improve Shell Features - Acer Iconia Tab A100

[How to] Configure Terminal Emulator to use Correct BusyBox & Improve Shell Features
A little info on Android, Terminal Emulator, and Busybox
I'm very new to Android. I just got my first device a few months ago(my A100). I have used linux and other forms of unix off and on for over a decade though so I do have some applicable knowlege.
After writing Flashex I have noticed allot of people with miss configured environment variables for Terminal Emulator. The defaults in Terminal Emulator are NOT configured to use the right Busybox. This can make doing ALLOT of the stuff around here seem allot more complex then it is.
How to improve the way Terminal Emulator works
==============================================
(Note: I'm going under the assumption that Busybox is located in /system/xbin. It should be normaly, though it doesn't matter for this as long as you know the correct location and can put in place of /system/xbin in these directions)
1) Launch Terminal Emulator.
2) Look in the Menu in the upper right hand corver and select "Preferences".
3) Scroll down to the "Shell" section of "Preferences".
4) Select "Command Line" within the "Shell" section of "Preferences" and change it to the following;
/system/xbin/sh -u
Then Select "OK".
5) Select "Initial Command" within the "Shell" section of "Preferences" and change it to the following;
export PATH=/system/xbin:$PATH
Then Select "OK"
6) Now you will probably want to scroll up and change the color of the terminal background and text in the "Text" section of "Preferences".
Congratulations! You should now have a Bourne Shell(sh) with, color coded file types, TAB auto complete, and the correct Busybox version in the Terminal Emulator! YAY!

Is your device rooted? Do you have busybox installed?

You may be getting the permission denied error if you used This root method because it used a non standard install of Busybox to do the job.
It can be updated from what I understand by just downloading the J Rummy Busybox installer from play.google.com and reinstalling Busybox. Also as asked above if you don't have busybox installed you wont be able to point TE to it.
Hope that resolves the issue

Re: [How to] Configure Terminal Emulator to use Correct BusyBox & Improve Shell Featu
I keep getting the same error with terminal emulator and script manager:
Unable to confirm location of BusyBox, please make sure you have busybox installed
Looked in /system/xbin if you have it installed in another location, you can just edit the path at the top of the script

Sorry only A100 support allowed here.
But really, eyelash your rom if anything like that happens. Just flash the rom+gapps first and should fix it otherwise factory reset.

[Q] su permission denied

Hello there,
I just flashed a new ROM (Gingerbread 2.3.7) last night. After signing in the Google account everything is great; the old apps got redownloaded and all. I noticed that there is no apps listed in the superuser. I tried 'su' command in the emulator terminal & I got permission denied.
Luckily all the apps are working in perfect harmony. However, how do I get the superuser permission back? It seems like my device is not rooted. Do I need to root my phone again? Fingers crossed I don't.
Initially, I tried to flash the Ice Cream Sandwich. I tried multiple times but to no avail. I even tried to change the HBOOT (from CM7 > downgrader > Stock HBOOT) but the process failed. I afraid that this might be the cause my root access got lost. Anyone can verify this?
Thanks!
Su app will be built into the ROM so you should still rooted. Sounds like Su settings are just defaulting to deny. Open Su, menu > settings and check its set at prompt (safer than allow). After flashing new Rom you'll need to launch apps that require root access to allow them permission again. You might need to update the Su app or binaries if permissions don't stick.

beachcomber,
1. my Superuser is set at prompt.
2. I am not sure which app that require root access. Could you give me some examples so that I can run them?
3. I tried to update the su binaries, but I got this:
" checking current install path...FAIL!"
" failed to find currently installed su binary. Update cannot continue."
Therefore, what do you suggest?
Thanks.

Problems with GBTweaked and R800x

Hi,
Last night I installed the latest CDMA version of GBTweaked for my locked R800x. I am running into the standard no wifi issue, however, when I tried to install the wifi modules, I found myself unable to access CWM.... I tried to reinstall CWM with no luck. Flashtool isn't helping much with restoring to a previod nandroid backup either. Help would be greatly appreciated.
Maybe the button assigned to enter cwm has changed?
Last time i use kernel that assign back button for cwm, but since i have cwm on my system that use volume button to enter recovery mode, so the back button function is nullified automatically

Well, I don't even get the blue light on boot to indicate it is waiting for me to push the button...
Additionally, I keep finding a lot of chmod/rm/ls permission denies whenever I tried to reinstall superuser, or use the PC installer for CWM and Titanium keeps FC whenever I try to start it.
I just ran rootchecker and got this:

I am assuming you have root access. Download an app called x-parts from the googleplay store that will install the CWM for you. I don't remember how to get into recovery by using the app but I think it is pressing the volume d-rocker down or up. Play with your xperia play buttons a little and you will be able to get into recovery.

I do have root, or at least it still seems like I do, with the exception of the errors root checker is giving me. X-parts never worked for me before I changed roms, and it isn't working now. The only way I could get into recovery was by using CWM v. 5.
Whenever I try to install now however, it says it installed, and to reboot, however, when it is rebooting, I never get the blue light like I used to, and when it loads all the way into the system and go back into CWM/x-parts it tells me recovery isn't installed, and that my phone is supported.

Do not use an auto-installing app for CWM.
If you are on windows, use RecoveryX.

yeah, it involves pushing to the su folder via adb, but I don't remember the steps involved. Searching for a manual way to root any phone should turn that bit up.

ROOT Archos Familypad 2 - How to - IT WORKS !!!

How to ROOT Archos Familypad 2
I have tried many posted solutions and then even started looking into making a modified boot image until I finally came across a simple 1 click method. Cost me between 50-100 hrs of research and my personal time so I hope its appreciated by you.
STEP 1: ESTABLISH ADB Driver connection (skip part A if you can do this by yourself)
Part A) This can be a heart breaking experience on this particular device. I am an electrical engineer (msee degree) and I have never had problems getting the correct settings and setting up an ADB driver. But this device busted my butt. SO, to make it easy for you, and for me, download the PdaNet application (PdaNetA4126.exe) - a program called PDANet (used normally to allow you to wired tether your phone’s internet to your computer) can be used to install the ADB drivers for a lot of phones. THEN, on your Archos Familypad, turn on USB debugging, plug into computer, and start PDANet and follow it’s instructions.
Part B) VERIFY ADB: In command prompt, type "adb devices". YOU WILL SEE YOUR ARCHOS DEVICE! You can now safely delete PDANet on computer and on your Archos - we don't need it anymore. If you do not know how to get ADB or how to use ADB then STOP ROOTING YOU DEVICE NOW since you have much to learn and read before you start messing with rooting.
STEP 2: Download: "Root_with_Restore_by_Bin4ry_v31.zip"
see: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
NOTE: Be careful not to install any malware or other programs from any download sites, just get the zip file ONLY. MUST have version 31!
Unzip, run, select option 1, and presto...... YOU HAVE ROOT !!!!!!
STEP 3: Download from play store "Root Checker" or your own preferred root checking app and see the results.
Even if you restore FACTORY SETTINGS you will still have root! Yea baby!!!!!!
ENJOY................
UPDATE: 6/10/2015
On this product and other similar products, the manufacture has chosen never to update the ROM. Google Play app will update and thus cause problems (play store crashes often).
SOLUTION: force play store never to update. Follow these instructions: (also found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JI6YNSpAz8):
root, install supersu (from above instructions)
install busybox, AND also terminal emulator
TURN OFF internet access on your android device or it will silently auto-update store, making your hard typing work useless
goto location /data/app/ and make a COPY of com.android.vending-1.apk
open settings -> app manager and find play store. tap on it. it will open properties window. there will be button Uninstall Updates. Tap on it, click yes on "replace with factory version?" question.
goto /data/app/ and rename the COPY you made back to the name com.android.vending-1.apk
open terminal emulator and type command:
su
(at this time supersu app will ask you for granting root access for terminal emulator app, click grant access)
type commands:
touch /data/app/com.android.vending-1.apk
chattr +i /data/app/com.android.vending-1.apk
Enjoy! Regardless of internet connection, play store is now has version YOU need, not GOOGLE.

It is not working. I've tried with both v31 and v33. This exploit is simply not able to gain root. This is the output of the script:
Code:
Normal Mode enabled!
Pushing busybox....
4225 KB/s (1165484 bytes in 0.269s)
Pushing su binary ....
3830 KB/s (104576 bytes in 0.026s)
Pushing Superuser app
5559 KB/s (2139595 bytes in 0.375s)
Making busybox runable ...
Now unlock your device and confirm the restore operation.
Please look at your device and click RESTORE!
If all is successful I will tell you, if not this shell will run forever.
Running ...
Successful, going to reboot your device in 10 seconds!
./RunMe.sh: line 222: wait: pid 10 is not a child of this shell
Waiting for device to show up again....
./RunMe.sh: line 225: wait: pid 10 is not a child of this shell
Going to copy files to it's place
mount: permission denied (are you root?)
You can close all open command-prompts now!
After reboot all is done! Have fun!
Bin4ry
As you can see the mount command fails because there is no root.

I got the same results although the pushing numbers were different (I used v33) - I even tried modifying the script to use the native Fedora 19 x86_64 adb but got the same errors again on lines 222 and 225 and had the mounting problem . .
I tried to reply on the original posting where the utility was announced but Google had problems getting to the page . .
Anyone else made any progress?
Thanks,
Phil.

I simply froze the apps I DO NOT USE ON THAT TABLET. Everybody uses different apps. I have dedicated the device to reading magazines and books ... NOTHING ELSE. You better decide for yourself what YOU want to freeze. As for your English, it is better than SOME members here, who only PRETEND to know what they are saying.
Do I need to install INSTALL CWM

So, do I need to INSTALL CWM? Seems like I'm set already. Do I need CWM recovery?

Please note this all worked (even V31) eventually after doing most things 3 or 4 times, its just that my FP2 was so slow, things seemed to time out and 'appear' not to work, but each iteration moved further into the process. Hope that helps!

Here you go install go to settings and enable systemless mode https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6bczptEI-1LNHphSUQxRDg1RWM/view?usp=drivesdk
Here are the instructions for install Adblock without Recovery (e.g. TWRP):
1. Download Adaway from here: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=24588232905720420
2. Download a Terminal emulator from Playstore
3. Give him root (just type in the emulator "su" and allow root
4. Copy/write this in the Emulator and press enter:
mkdir /su/etc; cp /system/etc/hosts /su/etc/hosts; echo "#!/su/bin/sush\nmount -o bind /su/etc/hosts /system/etc/hosts" > /su/su.d/50adaway; chmod 0700 /su/su.d/50adaway
5. Restart your Phone
6. Install Adaway
7. Allow Root
8. Press install and follow the instruction
I hope this helps

not working for me... downloaded adaway from above link and no systemless box to check in pref that I see. Also tried running the command in terminal emulator but I get an 'event not found' error
update: I had to use the official 'Terminal Emulator for Android', which I wasn't wanting to use at first and used a different one because it would not let me copy and paste the above command line into the emulator, I had to physically type that whole thing out. But it said that the su folder exists which was the only confirmation I received in the emulator. Then I rebooted and installed, all good now!

Superuser binary files not installed (root)

Lastly, when I open up a terminal emulator on my Pixel 3 XL, it shows a "$" as the directory instead of "#". I can run the "su" command and the terminal will go to the root directory, but when I close the terminal and open another one, I'm right back at "$".
Will gettting the superuser binary files installed fix the above?
How do I get the Superuser binary files installed?
When have you ever automatically had superuser rights in a terminal? You have to run su in each session to gain that right. It sounds like you are rooted. What is not working?
Sorry, I was uneducated on the terminal issue. Just made sense to me that if I had root then I wouldn't need to type a cmd in terminal to get to it.
One thing that isn't working is stage 2 of Root Checker Basic Verify Root function. It tells me that the superuser binary files aren't installed. Not exactly sure what that means or if it even means anything, tbh.
Also when I try to run ROM Manager it tells me I still need to root my phone because Superuser was not found at system/bin/su or system/xbin/su.
But what are you trying to do, that requires root, that doesn't work? If you are getting superuser request and able to respond you should be fine. Now I could be wrong here, BUT... The way the partition table is set up now, on top of all the other different things for Android 10, may mess with certain 'root checkers' I mean it sounds like you HAVE root, but certain apps fail to recognize it. But if it's just checking it what's the problem?

Like I tried to install busy box and was unable to for the pretty much the same reason as your rom manager. It said their was no room in that directory for it.
OK so I installed an updated version of Root Checker and also SuperSU validator and they are both testing fine now.
I think the older version of Root Checker that I was using was programmed to search for the binary associated with the superuser app I used to use for root management a few years ago?
Same problem
