Benchmarks / Tests vs Galaxy Nexus - HTC One X

Since more and more users start getting their One X's, can some of you still having maybe a GNex run some tests or compare both...
i am interested to see a "normal" user's perspective, not some magazine article or tech blog. thx!

[Q] Galaxy Nexus Why all the anticipation ?

After seeing all the specs on this phone, and some hands on video, I am pretty dissapointed with the wait. There are phones out now that pretty much rival all aspects of the Nexus - except the ICS. In a month or so, ICS will be available to the the other phones. When it is, it will put the Nexus on par with them (or a notch below).
Whats all the hype about ? It seems like it is all around ICS, and a device we cannot yet get our hands on.
Ics. Duh.
I invented cyberspace. You're trespassing.
Why ?
Because of the ****ty carrier update system.
Personally Id by an Amaze 4g today if the stupid piece of crap carrier and HTC werent in the way of me getting Android 4.0. As it stands pretty much the only way you get to use it is by getting a GN or waiting 2-3 months for decent roms to come out.
Again. Since Google refuses to mandate min. time frames for carrier/OEM updates this means noone has a clue when they can get a major OS update. Making GN the only choice for months.
The HD screen is the second biggest factor , I havent seen any comparison to a QHD screen so dont know if its as big a deal as Im making it out to be.
The display, the OS, and the fact that it's a Nexus device. Win/Win/Win.
For me it's not having an annoying overlay. Touchwiz and Sense are ok, but I'd much rather have vanilla Android.

The Nexus line is not suppose to be "top of the line" spec phones.
But to answer your question, the Galaxy Nexus comes with ICS, that's why everyone wants it.
To put things into perspective. I bought my G2x a few month ago, and it shipped with Froyo, with a promised update to Gingerbread. This was many, many months after Gingerbread was released.
Typically, phones won't see the latest android OS a few month after the OS has been announced. So if you want the latest OS, you need to go with a Nexus device.
1.) ICS
2.) Likely to have a huge developer base
3.) Hardware fairly optimized for software (and according to: http://www.theverge.com/2011/11/17/2568348/galaxy-nexus-review , its blazing fast)
4.) 720p HD Screen (again according to the above link and also http://mobilesyrup.com/2011/11/17/galaxy-nexus-review-part-1-hardware-overview-video/ although the screen is pentile, it still is amazing)
5.) Vanilla Android
6.) ???
7.) Profit
Now, I can see why some people might not want to buy this phone because of the following three reasons:
1.) Low-standard GPU - could become obsoleted fairly quickly (really old GPU) and I highly doubt a lot of games in the future could run on this device
2.) Although the hardware is fast now, in a few months from now it may not be as fast in comparison to other devices. (Remember CES 2011 with the introduction of dual core smartphones? From then on, the single core processor phones were essentially obsoleted + it is rumoured that there will be quad core phones later this year - http://mobilesyrup.com/2011/11/15/r...ndroid-4-0-with-a-2-5ghz-quad-core-processor/)
3.) The battery life may not be great with this phone

that's exactly what it is a Developer reference phone for ICS
that's why you no longer see the state of the art hardware included anymore since Nexus S
I see all your points.
I guess I think Google/Samsung/Verizon, just dragged thier feet too long on getting it to market IMO. I think higher spec phones are just months away, so the only thing cutting edge here is ICS. Just my opinion.
Now, I do have the Nexus on the way, but I am just not going to be sleepless over it. I just sold my Galaxy Note (too big to function as a phone for me, but one hell of an information device), but I will always wonder how it would have performed with ICS versus GB.

I think the nexus phones are developer phones so are set at being what google expect the average phone to be in the middle ics lifetime. After all theres no point developing on a phone when no other phone comes close to the specs. The only benefit really is it gets the latest android first rather than waiting for manufacturer releases or even later for mobile operator releases.
Personally I'm still undecided and also considering the RAZR or waiting to see what comes out in the next few months. There is no phone which makes me think I must have it at all costs at the moment. SGS2 is meh, HTC XE looks nice but doesn't excite, only RAZR and Nexus I'm considering though I'd consider the rezound if it was available in the uk.

I wouldn't go for the RAZR, as many reviews I have seen put it on a bad place compared to the Nexus (E.g. www.theverge.com)
For me it's the screen and ICS ....Why the crappy gpu and only 5meg camera and sub par audio is beyond me.....I don't play many games but the gpu in the s2 woulda been nice..I sold my Vibrant and need a phone now might not wait and just get gs2..The gpu in the nexus is very dissapointing ...Why the newer high end device would be speced lower than the older s2 is just dumb imo.
I did find a store that imports them and is expected the 28th for $749 shipped......The gs2 will cost me $444 local tmo.....Decisions Decisions!
Until the quad cores come out much later in 2012 the galaxy nexus will mostly be top dog. The next batch of devices will all be dual core 1.5ish ghz, some will get some version of 720p screens some will not. We should see that clear through summer until the galaxy hd/3.
That's a pretty good run for a device add to it the google experience and well it should hold its own for two years easily. IMO the only people getting screwed are the people buying the gs2 now.
As long add it's out before the end of January on AT&T (unlikely) I'll buy the galaxy nexus otherwise I'll wait for summer.
Well now it looks like the GS2 has already been ported, so maybe months of wait will be reduced to weeks to get a usable ICS rom on some of the better devices. Cancelled my preorder(Nexus) and am thinking of purchasing another Note !

I'd like to refer you to here where they go beyond speculation and actually have the device so aren't pulling things out of thin air like 99% of the people here.
For people who tl;dr:
"Before we received the device, what troubled us was the idea of a last-generation GPU pushing 1280×720 pixels of the Galaxy Nexus’ screen — we can now say that fear is unfounded. We picked up and played a few games of Wind-up Knight and found it performed better in its native resolution than did the Motorola RAZR at 960×540. The RAZR uses the same GPU at a slightly slower speed, but has 40% fewer pixels. Google has done some serious tweaking to the graphics drivers to achieve such amazing results."
Just like how we don't compare ATI and Nvidia cards by their GFLOP's nor triangles per second, we should keep in mind that performance is dependant on both hardware and drivers - and varies with games just as some games naturally play better with Nvidia cards and some perform better with ATI/AMD cards. Drivers make a world of difference. Looks like Google/PowerVR/TI have done their job.

Once again, MP means jack **** EXCEPT picture size. Do your research before you comment. As some comparisons have said its only a little below the iPhone 4s in quality, and guess what? That's not due to MP.

That review was pretty good.

Advice Please

I am thinking about purchasing an unlocked Galaxy Nexus to use as my next phone. I will be using it with my prepaid T-Mobile plan. I was wondering if this is the smart thing to do with the release of the One X and the upcoming Galaxy S III. I really don't need a super powerful phone. I had a Tmobile GS2 but sold it because I didnt really like it. I am using a vibrant now. I heard of problems with lag and the gpu.
Well my understanding is that the One X doesn't support AWS on T-Mobile so that solves your problem right there. (The initial spec sheets said it was dual carrier HSPA+ Pentaband, but reviews said otherwise).
Even if it did, if you're considering switching to a non-Nexus device, I'd wait for the SGSIII to at least compare, considering it'll probably be the blockbuster of the year for Android devices.
Also, this thread has been made at least 5 times in the last week.

Uhhh I'm not sure. Most of the importers probably have it for pre-order/backorder (Negri, Expansys, Amazon). But like I said, it won't get HSPA on T-Mobile.
Personal preference
I myself had all kind of android phones, my last phone was t-mobile gs2 and i like it better then nexus because of faster 4g speeds. Both phones are very equal in performance, and both have ups and downs. On stock there was lag, but after rooting and upgrading to 4.04 it went away and the phone feels much faster.
In my opinion it has the best HD screen out of all phones i have seen with similar resolution. If you want an Android phone, your best option would be the nexus series because waiting for latest OS update from manufacture sucks.
Phones I've used similar to nexus
Galaxy Note
Galaxy s2 European version
T mobile s2. and many more don't wanna count em all will run out of space lol
liked nexus better except 4g speeds on s2.
Tmobile s2 was getting 16-22 Mbps and nexus gets 4-9 Mbps, in same
Coverage area.
PS. i don't post as much but i am always reading these forums

Oh. Well there are places all over. If you don't care too much about warranty and want the cheapest price, wait for a "daily deals" type site to sell it. At least one seems to have a deal every week, selling for like $425-$450.
The Biggest differences in these phones will be user experience. Galaxy S II, HTC One X, and the GNEX all have different experiences. All will do essentially the same at the same speeds (Even with a Quad Core). YOU ultimately have to read and choose for yourself. Just cause something has more cores doesn't make it the greatest although it maybe the latest.

Totally agree. Look at the One X with its shaky browser and sense keeps crashing. But, OP, if you can be patient and get the Galaxy SIII that would be my advice. I myself just bought the nexus and waiting for delivery, but I will also purchase the SGS3.
I have the GSM version with a tmobile prepaid sim. After unlocking, rooting & flashing a custom ROM my GNEX is super blazin , buttery, silky smooth. The HTC one series has dominant specs yes but the development won't show up for awhile. & the GNEX display.......need I say more. BTW; GummyNex ROMS & Franco kernels + Carbon Fiber Ghost Armor and a good case give the ability to hold on your hand the best device on the market period. Silky butter Im telling ya

A strong contender Emerges ..Galaxy S3

Samsung reveals the Galaxy S3 quad-core processor
http://www.techradar.com/news/phone-and-communications/mobile-phones/samsung-reveals-the-galaxy-s3-quad-core-processor-1077741
Samsung promises "powerful quad core performance" and reveals that the Exynos 4 Quad doubles the performance of its dual-core predecessor, "while consuming 20% less power".
Any of you guys fearing Galaxy S3 will do to ONEX what S2 did to sensation : ) ?
Any thoughts ?

Why should I fear? Every devices has it's own cons and pros I know what I get when I buy HOX and I know what will happen when I wait for SGS3. Maybe they'll show off with some stupid benchmark which I don't care. They just announced the processor will take a long time before coimng to a Smart phone.
benchmarks mean jack..it is all about what the user experience of the phone provides to the consumer that the vast majority are looking into now.. And i think that the One X provides that now. It has the all round good factor about it. Great specs but also great experience..What i mean it has everything in one. Great for games and great for music and all the other things to improve the phone even more with development
This thread will get closed, not relevant to the HOX. Although patiently waiting to see what it brings to the table
The original Galaxy S had a supposedly more powerful GPU than the Desire.
That didn't stop it from freezing every second and randomly rebooting every few minutes. It also didn't change the fact it felt like a fragile toy. It didn't change the fact that the plastic used was the exact same as what you'd find on their €50 Europa.
Samsung can up the numbers as much as they'd like but it won't stand for anything if it doesn't feel right. User experience is everything, numbers are nothing.

One thing is for sure..it won't look as beautiful n stunning n give a premium feel as my One X..its gonna be the same cheap plasticy finish..n dull..n if they used the pentile matrix again with oversaturated colors (like in galaxy note) its gonna be having the same black clipping issues..grey squares all over black..
M done with Samsung..I don't care if they put 6 cores in there..I totally love my One X..

Its funny how people can be hypocrites. I'm nit saying you in particular but everyone is showing their HOX benchmark all proud but when we talk about the Galaxy s 3 then all of a sudden benchmarks don't matter anymore.I expect the galaxy s3 to mop the floor with the one x in terms of user experience, speed, battery life. The only area where I think the one x might be better than the S3 is build quality and MAYBE screen cause as awesome as the one x screen is, we have yet to see what the S3 screen is all about.
Unless the g3 comes in a One X chassis and runs Sense 4.0, i won't be interested. All it will be good for is comparing stats.

i can't physically notice the pixels on the 720p screen, why the hell would i want a 1080 screen on a phone ffs?
anyway, expectations are the mother of all ****-ups...
imho another bull**** flame bait thread.
mod lockdown imminent
Benchmarks are useless. For me personally I find the HOX plenty fast for my needs. Sure it'll improve with kernels and such.
More importantly UI is a major factor. TouchWiz albeit decent is poor compared to Sense. Sense is lovely few gripes but lovely none the less.
Now if Samsung totally revamp and totally recreate TouchWiz then that will be something to consider. I loved the SGS2 but spent most of it's last months on AOKP.
Personal preferences, I prefer the simplicity and usefulness of Sense and it's widgets hence why I came back home to HTC. Competition is good for us
I expect the S3 to have
1. better battery life (32nm process, same A9 core, AMOLED uses less power, bigger overall battery in S3) when in use,
2. similar stand by time (no power saving core),
3. similar computing power (Antutu being the benchmark as it just gives raw number crunching results).
4. S3 will have a much worse screen than the One X (AMOLED simply ruins the colors. My old HD2 wipes the floor with the S2 concerning screen colors).
5. S3 will be boring. Have you seen TouchWiz? Sense is bliss compared to it. Also, the S2 feels cheap (but then again so shoes the One X compared to my HD2 and even more to iPhone)
All in all.. my choice would be a well-manufactured One XL (best battery life and best processor but lower performance - that I can live with). But they don't sell them here.. and they don't seem to manufacture many good ones yet.

There are people who are obsessed with benchmark. But IMO these benchmark can be tweaked we saw an article where benchmark app was compromised and tweak to their chipset. By unlocking FSP cap you can get better scores but you'll see lot of display glitches. That's why I really don't care about benchmark. In todays world whatever you buy the latest and greatest will be out-dates in matter of days. You can't keep up with it. As far as software I don't care for both Sense and TouchWiz. Anyway I'll strip it and flash CM once it's out.
As long as the SGS3 has external micro SD I'll be getting it over the ONE X, the ONE X without external memory support is too Apple like for me. I like freedom, thus the reason I choose Android.

Come again why are you on this side of the forums if you think that the S3 is going to mop the floor with the one x in terms of everything basically? We get it you love the S3 and you really do not like the HOX. But for my life i have not read anyone go on about the specs behind this phone and raving about it. I for one got this phone not because of tegra 3 and because of it being the first quadcore but because of like i said the user experience...
Benchmarks are for those who love to brag how big and powerful their phone is. Like something else to feel good about themselves Look at the S2..Now that phone was the best and maybe still one of the top 2 phones in the world in my eyes. It had it all. But when it came down to user experience it sucked.
In regarding games you needed chainfire 3d to be able to play tegra games. I can do that without that with my HOX. And it will probably be the same with the s3.
Quality of sound. Again the S2 lacked way behind. It needed Supercurio to release his Voodoo Louder app to give some sense of good audio. My HOX comes with beats audio already with the phone no need for anything extra. And i bet it will be the same with the s3. All power no end product.
Touchwiz. I actually loved touchwiz. But now using sense i love sense even more.
Now no denying the s3 will be the king of android phones when it comes out. But you will find that there are people out there who prefer the HOX for the overall user experience and not because of the specs it provides..And lets not forget this phone is quite powerful in its own right and will only get better with the help from development here...So maybe you need to go somewhere else to rave about your s3

And what exactly did the S2 do to the sensation? AFAIK, it was a worthy competitor, but was also buggy as hell (GPS problems) and lets not forget that it felt like a cheap toy and came with touchwhizz.
Lots of people bought the sensation after having held both devices.
I have no doubt that the S3 will be a great phone. But that won't make the One X any less.
"Mop the floor" lol. It will be a little bit faster in some respects, as is always the same with the next new smartphone, it has slightly more advanced tech than the previous one.
"mopping the floor" is like comparing the sg3 to a nokia 3310.
But the Nokia wins on battery life

-- I need you to read your statement again properly. So, some developers decided not to make their apps compatible with Mali400 GPU and utilize proprietary nvidia compression. I guess it's Samsung's fault that those developers are not interested to run their apps/games on non-Tegra devices. You don't need CF3D for "normal" games. If this is your excuse for poor user experience, blame the devs.

HOX still better than SGSIII Engadget Review!!

This is what the Engadget review wrote at the end:
The worst thing about the GS III? No matter how hard it tries, it just isn't greater than the sum of the HTC One X's parts. That's not to say it falls short, but merely to emphasize that times have changed since last year's Galaxy S II, which landed on an unsuspecting world that was largely devoid of predators. The Snapdragon variant of the One X has similar computing power, battery life and photographic credibility, but it also has a much better user interface that sticks more closely to the guiding ethos of Android 4.0. The One X also has a more forward-looking physical design, while the GS III clings to the tried and true styles of old. Perhaps the biggest sacrifice you'd make by going for the One X over the GS III is the loss of the cheap storage offered by the microSD card. That's a painful thing to give up, but given how deeply we feel about the need for Android to move forward and not get stuck in a Gingerbread-flavored groundhog day, we might just take the hit.

This thread will get locked to be honest looking at the trend here and the rules.
It will still end up selling way more than One X.
Competition is there, but even that has its flaws like we all I know.
Review actually comes out with high praises for SGS3 overall.
You know Samsung android phone is good when Slashgear praises it
But frankly, the most technically accurate review is that of gsmarena.
Well written. Can I get a Shazam or an amen?

In all honesty, it was one of endgadget's worst review. People who have the S3 and the one X says there is no contest : the Galaxy SIII is a better phone.

Just traded in my XE for One X last night on the eve of the launch of SG3 here in this country. Bought my XE a week before the One X was launched. I think I must be doing this on purpose.
Yeah, the overall reviews are handing it to SG3 but I can't imagine life with a Samsung phone. The display colors are too "sweet" for me.

No contest, eh? While I'm looking forward to test my GS3, I highly doubt I'll say either is convincingly better than the other. There's always going to be aspects of one device that beat aspects of another. I thought Engadget had balls calling out certain niggles of the GS3. I almost always find things I dislike about devices that have been omitted from reviews. By the way, this thread is stupid.

[Q] Galaxy S3 LTE antenna slower than competition due to software or hardware?

As the title indicates, several sites have noted that for whatever reason that the LTE speeds on the Galaxy S3 are slower than the competition. For example, Motorola has recently been emphasizing this on ads:
http://www.phonearena.com/news/Motorola-aims-at-Samsung-in-new-ad_id37566
Also, I've seen other sites where, for example, the iPhone 5 has significantly faster LTE speeds than the GS3. I am wondering if this is something that can be fixed with a software update or is it entirely due to hardware and, hence, unfixable? Just for the record, I am a happy GS3 owner and am not at all trying to start a flame war but would like to arrive to the truth.
It probably depends where you are? I have done speed tests in my area and I can beat my wife's iPhone 5 by 5mbps.. last test was around 20mbps...

That is exactly what I assumed when I saw the iPhone 5 beating the GS3 on a couple of sites but...now that Motorola is making a big deal about it, I was wondering if it was a software or hardware issue. Here's a recent CNET article on this point:

I did a speed test and hit around 40 mb. Bosses 5 got 25 or so. Multiple tests had my galaxy way ahead. I'm in Phoenix.
It's close against the iPhone 5 but Motorola is claiming a big advantage in LTE speed, about double. If it is strictly dependent on where you are then i would assume that that would make it lawsuit worthy?
