[ROM]CM9TweakedV0.0.1 NEEDS HELP - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So I took the CM9 rom, deleted a few things, changed a few things, messed around changes A LOT of things actually...
But I did this all on Windows believe it or not, so without further explanation this rom needs somebody elses work on it to make it flashable.
I did this for my Epic 4G, and the results were amazing, especially battery life.
This rom; once it works, should free up a tleast 5-10 or maybe more ram. And you should be getting an 1-5 hours more battery life.
So here is the rom that needs work.
Please do not flame me for this, I know I did not make this rom from scratch, all I did was make a few changes for it to be better.
***For the devs who want to work on it: The problems I am concerned about is that I changed the build.prop and the update-script so you will have to double check to make sure that it is ok.***
Notes: I did change one minor(its actually major) thing that might effect everything, I do NOT have an Epic Touch yet so I do not know if it is laggy or not. I am trying to buy one currently.
I did this for my Epic's rom a while ago, so I had the option of 2 things to do to that certain thing, one option is laggy but gives more ram, the other option is smooth as a mofo but a lot less ram. Don't ask what it is, I won't say, I'm sure somebody will figure it out and tell everybody.
This rom needs to be fixed in order to be flashed, thank you.
If I posted it in the wrong section move it or remove it. I posted it here because I didn't CREATE the rom, and I didn't want any trouble.

I took cold medicine that helps me sleep so I am very drowsy now, this whole thread might not make sense, but I wanted to put it up before I went to bed so when I wake up it'll have posts.

wow....so does the text auto fit in browser works?..is video fixed?...wow....lots of things need lots of help...

New to Android

Hey guys,
I am still very new customizing my touch pro 2. I would like to know how to edit the android start up text. Mostly for the ability to overclock but also I would like to become more familiar with this os.
I have really had issues with my device running on Windows Mobile and would love to keep Android . Any help at all would be much appreciated (even if you make me look like a fool). I love this phone, But I have exchanged it many times due to it being sluggish and totally unusable. If I can't figure this out I will be selling my brand new phone and getting a Nexus One in the hopes that the combination of android and a stupid fast cpu will make me happy.
To all of the people who are working so very hard getting android fully functional. Thank You. Thank you for all your help guys I know your time is better spent not answering my stupid questions. Rich
A few things, you can visit the thread here and read the first 2-3 posts for an overview:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627997
You can also go the the new Portal site Reefermatness put up, there is a section that covers the startup.txt and explains all the various options, including the overclocking.
(FAQ section - way down towards the bottom)
http://sites.google.com/site/androidport/
Thank you
Thanks for your reply. I had searched everywhere and been reading everything.
the only thing i didn't do was actually look at the files android created on my sd card lol.
Found it
So I tried the overclock command and it didn't work ? what could i be doing wrong. Thank you

We need more details. Kinda hard to tell what exactly went wrong w/out details. Lol.
As far as overclocking go, what file manager did u use to make the edits? I found the easiest one to use for editing start up txts is gool ol File Explorer. I had issues using total commander. First, u have to make sure the spacing is right, when u enter in the edit. Its real picky and will trow out the previous or following command line in the txt, if its not spaced right. Plus the edit has to come b4 that phykeyboard command. That's probaly mispelled but u should know what I mean. Then u have to make sure that once ur done with the edit, it stays as a Txt file. Its gonna ask u to save and if u want to save it as a Doc., say No. That keeps it in its original format of startup txt. If u save as a doc. , then it definitely won't wrk.
If u still having issues, juss let me know. Or look a few pages back from the last, on the android rhodium thread. I had uploaded my overclocked startup txt there. All u would have to do is make a copy of ur original unedited startup txt(to hve juss in case), then delete that startup txt in ur andboot folder. Then download my overclocked one in there. It'll overclock u to 787MHz. ;-) make sure to read the notes on it though. So u will know the in and outs of it and what to do if issues arise. Its real easy once u get the hang of it. Try it out..let me know how it goes.

demandarin is right, and just like Johnny-5, we need more input!
It is important the 'set cmdline' line is all on a single line. All the options are listed with a single space between each option, and a double quote starting and ending the complete options list.
In the FAQ, it may appear that this line wraps or is two lines, but that is side-effect of the html page and narrow views/screen resolution.
I do all my editing with a vim editor...
Demandarin,
When I edited my startup.txt I just used file explorer. I put the oc line as the last line before the keyboard entry. It must be my spacing that is giving me problems.
I have looked through a ton of your posts, lol.I cannot find your startup.txt copy anywhere could you post it for me?
Also, I just noticed that when in android I cannot make outgoing calls, is there a fix for that ?
I tried to reply to you yesterday while i was at work using the onscreen keyboard but it kept correcting me with the wrong words how do I turn it off.
sorry for the format of my post I am running late and wanted to get back to you as soon as I could. Thank You

Yeah, u juss have to keep practicing at it. I usually put it somewhere in the middle to be on the safe side. Ill post my startup txt shortly in the main thread, so look for it after u see this post.
As far as ur outgoing calls not wrking, not sure. What device do u have? Is ur internet , incoming, and data wrkn though? If none are wrkn, then u probaly have to manually enter in ur carrier APN settings, which can b found on first page, thru link, of the rhodium android cab thread. Click on the download button. A whole slew of info and troubleshooting tips in there. If ur apn settings already in there, and other stuff wrks, then id say just delete ur data img. In the andboot folder in ur sd card.
You should keep trying the edit though, so u can have it downpacked. I couldn't get it right at first either..lol. tried a million times , kept getting errors. Then I finally got it. U know u got it when ur Android boots up without giving u errors that this or that is not a commandline. Ima boot back into windows now to post that in the rhodium android cab thread for ya.

No, not that I know of or have noticed. The only thing is that if u let the phone go to sleep, in android, it doesn't like to wake up a lot of times. My solution for that is go into Android settings. Then go to display. Scroll down to screen timeout. By default its set to 1 minute. I put it at the max at 30 mins. So the phone won't go to sleep or timeout for at least that long. Everytime the phone is touched, whenever, it resets that timer. I also went into spareparts. Scroll dwn to end button behavior. Change it to "Home" only. Instead of sleep. I get about 6-7hrs off da charger with really, really heavy android use. When I boot into android, I'm on it. Lol. Plus another tip is if u leave it on the charger and use it, it won't fall asleep. Even if u put it to. Its still technically running although the screen is off.
As always, use at own risk. Juss like with any other program or anything u dwnload. I haven't had no problems other than what was stated. To me, the difference in everyday performance is greatly enhanced. The builds work perfectly fine without the overclocking. With the overclocking, it makes everything faster and smoother and a ton less lag. Try it and determine for urself. ;-)

Just got home from work. A little tired and a little drunk lol. thank you so much for your help. I will try to change the startup.txt in the morning when I can focus.
A few questions;
Have you tried the battery fix at all?
I see you have increased your clock speed. how do you like it ? does it still have the sleep problems?
What other things can you change in the startup.txt file?
Thanks and good night.one more beer and its bedtime.
Demandaron,
Dude it totally Works. Thank you. Also I can confirm that setting the sleep mode to 2 works perfectly as a fix for the phone not wanting to wake up.
Edit: So this thing is awesome, everything is faster even web load times.
More questions:
Is there anything else i can use to enter text other than the tapatalk app? It keeps incorrectly correcting my words lol
How can i backup my settings/apps?
Random thing happened. I was using the slide out keyboard and all the sudden my tp2 goes dark like its sleeping (also it was plugged in). I had to pull the battery to get it to boot again.

No problem. I tried to reply to ur pm but I don't think it went thru. Xda havin issues or somethin..lol. I called n left u a voicemail.
As far as backing up ur settings, in Android settings, there's a place to check off backup settings. I'm not sure which one its under. Or if u trying to back up apps or whateva, use Astro explorer or titanium backup.
I think that pmem setting or battery edit for startup txt causes ur device not to charge when on the charger. I've read of that happening with a few people. Dats y I don't use it. 6ve never had my battery die not once while booted in Android.
With the keyboard thing, I think its a manufacturer thing or error. Me and several others noticed, in windows mobile, that if u open the keyboard to fast/hard or let it close too fast/hard..then it'll reboot or whateva. Something about maybe the battery contacts comin off for that split second. A simple fix for that is to wedge a piece of paper in between ur battery and battery cover. So it'll keep the battery pressed down and the power contact stays made. Regardless or keyboard or not. That's what I heard on that issue. I juss make sure to close the keyboard easily instead of letting it slam shut

I need to find a set of apps or an app that turns on/off wifi,3g,Gps

Porting Roms from *** To the Evo

I assume this is the correct forum otherwise please move this.
What is the best article(s) to read if you want to start learning how to port roms from other android phones to the Evo? I've been searching on here and on google and it seems most articles are either outdated or only talk about editing existing cooked roms so I finally broke down and posted this. Yes I do use Linux and I do program in Java and .NET and do have a bachelors in software development but I have just never looked into doing this type of work until now.
Thank you, any direction I'm pointed in is appreciated.
I'll direct to you the Q&A forum.
Side Note:This goes in General, but im nice so ill answer you question.
There is no real BOOK to read, a java book is a good start, but you say you know java, so you can probably skip that.
Basically, this is all you have to do.
Download "Dsixda's Kitchen" to your linux distro(amazing software)
Grab a rom from another device.
Grab one of our(evo)stock roms(deodexed Stock 3.70 is good for froyo port,4.12 for gingerbread)
Open the kitchen, and find the option(#19 i think it is), and follow the steps to port it(hold on, your not done yet)
From there you will need do some manual work by tinkering with libs, tinkering with the boot.img, bascally just tinkering with everything related to booting(libs,ramdisk,hw-libs,etc.) untill you can get it to boot or bootloop.
If it boots, thats great, if it bootloops, youlle need to logcat it then debug it.
If you need help with something, pm me, other than that, thats basically(*note: i said basic, more complexed roms like sense 3.0 and non-htc device rom may require extra work)(*note2:alot of times, its going to be a no-booter, but just keep trying.)

Don't forget some of the most important stuff is in the build.prop and update-script.
Word of advice, look at a sense 2.1 and check out the base that was used. You can also use beyond compare and basically skip Linux all together. Using kitchen to deodex the ruu is a good first step. Choose option 11 in the menu.
Personally, I would start off with a working port and changing apps and moving stuff around. Also get a good list at which libs are associated with what. But use stock bins, etc, xbin, hw libs, and ported apks, framework, and software associated libs. Stock boot.img and a good updater-script. Also know key
Things like the EVO density is 160, vold_stab is usb, amkd is rotation, gsl hw accel stuff like that.
But first things first, Google is ur friend and use the q&a section.

ah yes, forgot about build.prop, and i think the kitchen takes care of updater script(unless the device has specific mount pointsor you want text or to clear cache and system). i was just getting the basics to boot, from ther he can debug the errors out of the log.
What about something A LOT simpler like adding the CRT animations to a ROM? any pointers? Any TUT you can point me to?

I'm actually glad this thread is still here we don't get to learn much from the devs here. I mean its mostly do it yourself but a getting started guide isn't a bad thing. Mods are quick to move and people are quick to flame but I say leave it, where else is the knowledge pool? Can you really learn this stuff in Q and A seems like it would be mostly help my phone doesn't boot...

Check out the APKTool, APKManager threads. Lots of great valuable information in there.
I sometimes wish XDA focused more on the "HOW TO" and less on the delivery aspect. The more folks developing, the further we will be along
Another great way to get started is to mentor with another established developer.

Well said. People love to flame anyways and XDA is famous among other Android forums for being so harsh. This thread helped me out big time, and it's especially nice to see Leoisright and myn in here giving up a few pointers, because I too was curious about porting. I never worked up the confidence to ask, just too worried about it being passed over or getting flamed because I'm young and curious.

[Q] Can't seem to apply two mods at the same time... Ideas?

Got the Official Inc OTA 4.08.605.2 from WildStang, and I'm trying to install the 1% Battery Mod and the zoomyMod for my screen brightness, but they don't seem to be able to reside at the same time. I install one mod, and then when I install the other one, the first one goes away. Then I install for first one again, and the second one goes away.
I'm using CWR 5.0.2.0, and loading them one at a time, rebooting between each one.
Sorry for being such a newb, but been a while since I've done this (since my Eris early last year), but I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Both mods replace the same file, framework-res.apk. if you want to use both the easiest way would be to install the zoomy mod, and then use uot kitchen to apply a battery mod your self. Or find someone willing to merge the two mods together for you.
Ah, thanks! I'll give that a try. Didn't realize it was the same package.

I thought about it but i dont really have the time. I have 2 jobs 2 kids and a wife so that takes up alot of my time. Most of the time when im on here im at my second job where i jockey a computer screen for 8 hours. If i could get my job to let me set up a pc i would work on developing but i think they would frown on that lol. They would probably fire me if they knew how much time i already spend on my phone during my shift.

Yep be careful with that. Not worth losing a job over.
What I don't understand is that these miss were listed in wildstang's thread, but nobody brought this up. Just surprising. Maybe I should be surprised at what a newb I am...
Here's a workaround. Get zip themer from the market, and have it update it's edifyness. Then tell it to build a flashable using one if the mods. Flash the zip it creates in recovery. Do the same thing for the second mod. Zip themer is basically an upgraded metamorph; much improved.

Tablet UI transparent status/sys bar HELP

Ok guys,
Im going to post this in every Note 2 variant forum until I can figure this out.. I mmanaged to get a working transparent status/systembar on my note 2 on tablet UI.. the only problem being that my phone totally locked up and being the DUMB a$$ that I am I did create a backup.. reflashed a rom and thought I could recreate it.. I have located what I think the files name is and it is tw_status_bar_background.9.png. Now when I try to recreate it the status bar becomes all distored when pressing something.. I will show you pictures below of it working and it NOT working.. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated.. I am not asking anyone to give me a step by step but more of just yes thats the right file or no thats not it..

Ok guys,
Im going to post this in every Note 2 variant forum until I can figure this out.. I am not asking anyone to give me a step by step but more of just yes thats the right file or no thats not it..

if u wanna change the bottom system bar, the default should be tw_status_bar_background, as shown in tw_system_bar.xml, but u can use color code if u want to

well, i have started to mod my phone with tablet ui for more than a year but still yet to release anything athough i am using it on daily basis from note -> s3 -> note2 now. however, since the updates were rolled out quite frequently in the last year, i had to switch to new firmwares and redo/rewrite the changes accordingly because there were quite a lot of fundamental changes recently. this process is time consuming especially i employed some parts of firmwares from other devices as well as the custom features i added. so, i am not sure when i can release something since i modded the kernel and the rom as well in my own way which compromises the usual practice in terms of structure and so forth. that means i have to make sure it is compatible with other roms first, and then i must ensure i have time to solve and fix users problems

How come sprint is the most bland carrier?

Ive had many sprint phone's however I've had 2 cell phone models that I've rooted ever since i found it about it. An lg g3
And the one I'm posting with right now: s6
Ive noticed that for both (moreso with samsung) there is never really interesting mods or any real rom selection etc . How come this is? What's up with sprint specifically that makes it so difficult to customize/modify their devices? Im not *****ing or anything is just an observation . For instance there are tons of roms that include a lot of things I'd like on my phone but they are all compatible with every carrier other than sprint. Anyway of anyone had an answer or a path to lead me to ... that'd be cool. Hell, you can call me a dickhead and ill be happy

For starters there isn't as many devs for Sprint phones as there is for other carriers. Further more, Sprint is CDMA so making unlock mods like we did for the G3 is far harder. Not to mention just developing for Samsung in General is harder as they have more Anti-Root protection then say LG or HTC. We are currently working as hard as possible to bring cool mods and tweaks to this device... Sorry for the wait though

Also, don't forget there are oodles of Xposed modules you can use. I personally believe that is the main reason there aren't many mods/ROMs. I personally stopped developing ROMs because of this. Instead, I debloat and smali edit my own device to my liking, then write my own module to add the features I like. Before, I used to do smali edits, and make everything relate to one another. So users could add their own features, or choose the ones I built in. Nowadays, you can just install and uninstall the xposed modules you want. A lot easier for us developers. I also think android in general is getting more user friendly. They now have "theme stores" for users to apply a theme without root. I'm not sure what kind of "mods" you would be looking for that isn't already done via xposed or something else, but theming always seemed to be the biggest hit. I personally just theme my launcher.
However, there are some features from the S6 Edge I would like to have, so I downloaded the S6 edge ROM and may port it to our device.
TLDR: To simply answer your concern, I don't think development isn't there. I think its just easier for people to use xposed then fully mod an entire ROM and make the installer zip and everything like that for it.

Ahh that makes sense I need to go back thru xposed more thoroughly and how would i go about creating a module? That seems like something i would be interested in. And as far as mods go , im the type that ,even though I'm impressed with what i have i haveban insatiable need to make it one click better ( similar to the custom marshall stacks in the movie spinal tap that the volume dial went up to 11 instead of the standard 10, lol idk if you seen the movie or not) but mainly id like to modify the camera to a higher resolution and possibly include the ability to leave the shutter open as long as i want , those are just a couple of mods i would love to have haha i know I'm asking for an impossibility but those are the kind of ideas i come up with i just have no clue how to create such madness haha

I too want better quality from the camera. I believe that is needed by a kernel mod, or a .SO mod. The latter of the two is harder. But I want better slow mo quality, should be able to adjust bitrate, and maybe hopefully fps. But having the shutter open as long as you want, I like that idea! I may see what I can do. You can easily make the volume go to 11 instead of 10, but you won't get a volume boost. What I personally do, is use the mixer_paths.xml to boost the volume, then add more volume steps. On my S5 I had 20 volume steps for everything, and it worked great. Allowed for more minute adjustments, but still get the volume boost from the mixer_paths.xml.
About creating an xposed module, just look it up on the forums. Plus there are YouTube guides which tell you step by step how to do it. You do need to know Java coding though. Its extremely easy to learn though.

You're*
And I personally think I am very good with xposed and smali reading. I used to make ALL my mods through smali alone. I even wrote a "smali coder" that would translate java into smali without compiling anything. That tool though has long since been lost as well as its source code since I don't use it anymore. I now use Virtous Ten Studio for smali work cause of being able to link condition statements and stuff. Its got flaws, but it works. I will probably end up writing my own that way it does everything I would like it too.

I shall let you know if I ever figure anything out, don't expect anything done by tomorrow, or in a few weeks though . Expect something, but not everything, in about a month or so.

We do, it's a CSC tweak, but you can only add tweaks like that if you freshly flash a ROM. If we have xposed, you can add it anytime without having to reinstall.
Come to think of it, could you do something like XTouchWiz?

I can. I have something very similar already do my own personal setup. But if you compile a list of things you'd like, I'm sure I could figure it out.

It does, I just like the tweaks in it, I think it'll be a good base then we can make a specialized tweak for this device.
