One X Build Quality Issues - HTC One X

Decided to start to start a new thread for people to discuss any build quality problems with the One X as I feel a little underwhelmed with mine. The power button doesn't seem to have any feedback click and only seems to register input if you press it hard, the screen surround has a bit of excess plastic sticking out on the top left side that I keep catching my finger on and the phone flexes and creaks when pressure is applied in certain areas (when held to my ear during a conversation creaks like an old bed!).
Is anyone else getting these problems? I might send it back as the creaking during phone calls is driving me nuts :/

good idea ill post this here too
just wondering anyone with the white version suffering from suspected hardware/build quality problems?
maybe they rushed the grey we didn't even see the final retail version until very late

Wondering the same.. I intend on ordering a white one once this douche finally pays for my Note.

The build quality issues I have are with the white version.

ok colors theory seems off
now, build, anyone with an Asian version with issues?

Well picked mine up today and up today not had any problems at all

color? where is it made?

Mine is made in Taiwan. In the past the UK has normally got Taiwanese HTC phones and the rest of the EU having Chinese made ones. But as this is a new model, the initial batches may all be from Taiwan. I would expect Taiwanese made handsets to be slightly better in terms of quality.
I don't have any creaking or bits of unfinished plastic. Mine is white. I do see a couple of tiny imperfections in the white plastic. One is like a tiny grey dot. And the other is a tiny hole. But I am being very very fussy to notice this.
I do wonder how durable this polycarbonate surface is...if you rub at it to clean it, does it take the matt finish off making it shiny? (xperia S is AWFUL for this)

very good ,up you !!!

The creaking on mine is most noticeable when applying pressure to the top right of the handset. Does anyone else get creaking when squeezing this area between thumb and forefinger?

Grey one from t-mobile UK not even getting the screen glitches others are reporting
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA

I've a grey one that I picked up from t-mobile store. I've put on a different thread the issue I have with screen ripples on the side when pressure is applied but its actually much worse as what has happened is that the phone screen pops in and out of the casing in the top right and left corners and noticeable can be pushed and clicked in. Phone hasn't even been in my pocket yet...Will be swapping it out then.

Is the screen loose as if its not been glued properly because that's how my one is. But yeah I get a creaking and clicking noise
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA

Yeah it's as if the screen hasn't been fixed correctly. Mine also has those screen artifacts when pressing in the top right. Feels like the screen is loose.

Received my grey one x today.
the phone works like a charm only there is one big issue with the camera
everywhere I aim it the screen gets covered with red stripes. Now I don't know much about camera's but this is not good
dl . dropbox . com/u/71154395/IMAG0017 . jpg (i'm new here so can't post a pic)
This does not appear on the front camera so i guess its hardware issue with the back camera?
What do you guys think? should I return the phone?

Not good to hear build issues

I wouldn't expect great build quality from HTC, it'sa never been high for the last few top of the line HTC phones I owned. That was the reason I went with Samsung phones and it was such a change for better, the parts are just put together so much better. It's not about parts quality, but build quality.
Now I'm back to HTC getting One X (replacing G Nexus) but I fear I will see those little things not done right again. Sometimes its creaking case, sometimes it's the screen that has not been put in perfectly in leaving more space between screen edge in one side than the other side, or that dust I used to get under the screen (happened with both phones).

I think the most annoying thing is all the reviews harped on about how the One X has premium build. Hoping I'll get a replacement that's better put together than this one!

Maybe they were all "sponsored".

Mine (White) has no squeaking/creaking issues. The glass seems to be solidly attached to the body.
I do have a problem with the finish of the polycarb body. On the left side of the body, right below the micro usb, there's a small spot in where you glide your finger you will feel some roughness. There's also a tiny tiny hair like specimen which seems to be glued on the body. Its not noticeable so im cool with it.

now I know the loose hinge problem has been beaten senseless, but I'm asking this: who's screen has a slight wiggle? or a wobble? Looks like it is slightly loose on the metal hinges. Like the screen inself does not sit flush against the base of the phone and has a small, gap? I just wanted to make sure I'm not the only one...and maybe I'm jjust venting. Haha!

Mine do -- I aint worried about it.
Only have had mine for a bit over a month but hasn't happened to me yet.

Mine has a little bit of wobble with or without a case on the phone. It's only annoying when I'm tapping on the display.
I don't know if that's truly normal or not. Even if the hinges get loose from everyday use, I don't think the screen itself would act like that. So that's why I actually exchanged a G2 for that same "defect." My current one, of about one and a half months now, does not have the wobbly screen. I simply could not stand touching the screen and having the screen move with my fingers.

My first phone didn't do that, but I got a brand new in box replacement that does. Also, my wife's phone doesn't do it.
My newer one also has a slight creek sound sometimes when it rocks in portrait.
No biggy though. Like a computer with a noisy chair, I deal with it.

I think the shakiness of the screen is from dropping the phone, slightly or not slightly. even from a slight drop I think it would make the screen a little shaky just because its so thin.

Had mine for a few months now. The loose hinge is a VERY minor inconvenience, but the loose screen hasn't happened to me yet.
Weird, no loose hinge or screen here.....no creaks either. Dropped it twice on carpet though......
I dropped my phone from about 4ft high and it landed on concrete. Amazingly the phone is fine including the hinge.
And yes my hinge is loose but I knew about the issue before I purchased the phone. I really like the phone otherwise so I just deal with it.
Phone works like a charm.. preordered and have had it since 4 days it was released in stores.. shipped early. Whoot whoot.. dropped it from my pocket in the theater to the floor.. other than that never been dropped on anything hard. No hinge issue I would complain about.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
My hinge is loose also, but the rocking seems to come from the loose hinge. Least, thats where it seems to be on my handset.
Need to get around to replacing the spring.......
Mine had a bit of a wobble too. I cut up a screen protector and put it in the corner underneath the screen (the part that is over the keyboard when the phone is closed) and it hasn't wobbled since.

Could you possibly take a photo of how you did that?
I don't know what the hell happened to my phone, but it now makes this wobbling/clicking sound when I press the display on the left side. It's very annoying when I do anything with the screen. Not sure what to do to fix it, besides giving your fix a try.
Any other suggestions on how to get rid of the wobbling display?
I know this is kind of late, but I know ive got the same pproblem as you. Just like others. Its the wobbling of the screen that drives me nuTs. The screen protecter would be a great idea but I would like further instruction on how to do so?

Sorry guys, completely forgot about this thread. I'll have some photos up in a bit.
Until then, I'll try to explain it better.
If you look at your phone's back, then open up the keyboard about half way you'll see a rubber strip. I just cut pieces of a screen protector roughly that size, then stacked them on the rubber strip until it didn't wobble as much. I shouldn't say it's 100% wobble free, but it is extremely close.

yes entirely normal, there is a metal frame around the screen protecting it, its nice how hidden it is
i had my Desire HD for 19 months inside a pouch and never collected any dust, the moment i see something stuck i blow it out

I didn't think that was a picky post at all!! Mine has the same gap a the top and apart from attracting dust, it does worry me that this is a potential route for things to get behind the screen.
It was a legitimate question hamdir. Stop being so angry!
Yep, mine has a gap at the top and right side of the screen. Seen it mentioned by others here too.
Took only one day for the dust to gather and be visible in good light...
ok here is a non angry answer, use a pouch if you worry so much about the state of your device, my Desire HD is still new after 19 months thanks to the pouch
pouch is the best of both worlds, since you still enjoy the device naked when you use it

i have both for the Desire HD, but i've been using the normal leather one for the HD2 since it's slimmer
i can't use a device with it out now, when i take it out i put over the pouch and it protects the back especially the camera lens
The One X fits in the HD2 pouch but like 10% of it remains outside, i need to hunt a slim pouch for the One X
There's a gap on both the left and right sides of the display on my unit. The gap on the left is a fraction wider, and both sides have started to collect dust despite the fact that I've been using the official case since day one. It's mostly a non-issue for me, but there's this one stubborn particle that won't budge no matter what I try. It just sits there like a thorn in the side.. of my device.

I think there are two issues here. One is the normal gap between the side lining and the glass but the glass makes contact with the lining all the way around. BUt others have shown a real gap between the screen and lining that you can see the screens light through and dust can directly enter the screen area. The first is normal, and the second is not!
Someone posted pictures of the screen gap around the top of their phone and compared to mine there is definitely a big difference so I think OP made a valid post and isn't being "picky". My phone has a nice even fit all the way round whereas this other phone looked like the screen was kind of lifting away from the case. Mine also lets no light leak through whatsoever.

Something similar happened to me. The day I got my phone I was cleaning the display and some of the cleaner leaked between the glass and the panel. It grew in to a big grey blob and started moving from the top of the phone to the bottom. It went completely away overnight. It just happened again a few days ago when I was putting a screen protector on. Same thing, moved from top to bottom and went away overnight. Hope your's does the same.
BTW, from the AT&T logo you're in the wrong forum. I'm guessing the displays act the same though.

The One XL (AT&T) display is made by Sony. Maybe it's different than the Acer and Sharp in the One X? The Gorilla Glass is laminated to the display and I'd guess that would be the same part regardless of who produced the panel itself. I wonder if yours is just the display part w/o the GG glass overlay? But then what's the moisture "blob" in between? Curious.

This actually makes me wonder, and as far as I once heard the designs on the at& the and the International one x may seem alike but as far as I am concerned there is a minimal design difference, but don't take my answer for 100% sure, but that's maybe a possibility. Correct me if I'm wrong.
A friend of mine just had his digitizer replaced after he smashed it and has the same issue as you. Looks like it's not bonded to the LCD properly, the screen flexes when pressed. He is sending it back for repair again.
This is why my One X repair is delayed.
I broke my One X screen over a month ago now. It's been at the repair centre for that long. The reason is that the market has been flooded with cheap, hand-made, screens that have this exact problem and they are waiting for proper screens to become available. The official screens are bonded using a machine - very few of these cheap ones are fault free.
Likewise, if you have the digitizer replaced by a 3rd party, the chances are that they will do it by hand, leading to this problem. Be careful where you send your One X for repair if you do not use HTC themselves.
Unusually glossy? Sure there isn't a protection film over it?

I think you're spot on. I'd imagine it would be almost impossible for knock-off screens to ever be produced as well as the originals based on this...
"The 4.7-inch 720p Super LCD 2 display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 2, which is the new version that's thinner and stronger. We first saw the Gorilla Glass 2 back at CES 2012, though the glass manufacturer did not reveal then which handsets will be featuring the technology. HTC also told us that the One X features optical lamination, a process through which the screen ends up laminated to the glass, resulting in better viewing angles. We found this to be true, and having the screen so close to the glass makes it appear brighter and more visible under sunlight."
Isnt there any kind of liquid glue we can use to make the screen crack invisible ?
No. If you want a perfect screen replacement, suck it up and pay for the price of an out of warranty repair.

I put on a privacy screen and it looked great, the crack is hidden perfectly. Then I turned on my phone only to find out the image looked awful.
I havent found anyone happy with these 3rd party screen replacements. I am very sad, I love my phone but looking at a horrible crack makes me want to smash it against a wall.
From now on I am putting a heavy duty case on my phones.
I dont want to troll but my SGS2 had plenty of terrible falls including a 7 foot fall against a harsh Walmart parking lot. Not even a scratch. My hox was shattered for nothing

Is it built to avoid internal damage from such crashes?
Yeah, it'll be fine... Biggest worry is always the screen smashing.
I would assume that if the screen is fine, then the internals are fine. There are not many moving parts appart from the vibrator so it should be fine

Well screen perfectly handled it ^_^ physically internal build you say well sheilded from such things?
One more thing i noticed and unsure if i had it before.... The top of the screen got such like cut artifact like part of the picture cuts (like in bad frame sync games on pc) delay behind.... im on paranoid rom jb with custom kernel tripndtoid which i installed few hours ago....could it be the gpu drivere in this kernel?
There's a video on Youtube of a guy doing a drop test. He basically drops it from various heights onto concrete. Although the screen eventually cracks from a face down hit, it continues to work fine. I wouldn't be too worried
So no worries from drop .... Thanms
graphical artifacts (while sliding the top side of the screen was like cutting it self) its gone now after installined re-packed faux.
Dont worry about it. I have opened my HOX several times and things are pretty tight inside.

Good to know.... the press guy at HTC i think mentioned that they built ONE X to be "hard to break" phone... and used some special plastic which knows to avoid stress and internal damages... but hopefully this engineering also smart to avoid internal damages when it falls right on the face (screen) hehe... think so?
Whenever someone mentions possible damage to their one x, it makes me cringe! Hope its all good for you

Like others have said, if the screen is fine then internals should be fine too. The biggest risk of dropping the One X is breaking its' screen. That is why I use a thin TPU case, with a small lip around the bezel which prevents the screen touching any flat surfaces. It should protect the screen from small drops. And I also don’t have to worry much about placing it face down on a hard surface. Unless you are one of those people who absolutely hate having a case, I highly recommend using one.
The case I use looks pretty decent, better than most other TPU cases out there. The texture on it's back closely resembles the feel and look of the polycarbonate back. It also prevents the camera lens touching the table when rested on its' back. Here are couple of photos of it:

But an issue find in my case and your case also..the TOP of the phone... lip seems really small and almost at same level as the glass...is it?

your comment will be appreciated!
Once a HOX is dropped face down it will trigger an internal self destruct mechanism and will burst in flames in exactly 72 hours.

Gap in between screen and frame

Has anyone noticed a gap between screen and frame. I have found a small gap on the front top (front side) . I'm afraid that dirt and/or humidity could enter at this place. Just want to know whether this is a common/acceptable issue. I have HTC 10 Silver. There is no gap in bottom but only in front side..Take a look the following pictures.

Yes Done with pic..
I'd exchange it to prevent dirt build up in there. Sorry pal, there are bound to be more lemons in the early batches :\
let me know how it goes. I have a gap at the top on the grey model as well.

So it seems that both Silver and Grey have gap. But the question is...Is it a common/acceptable issue? We need more people to check their HTC 10. Thanks b0gd4n
After watching the teardown video on the YouTube. It looks like the screen is a little bit smaller than the frame for engineering tolerance and easier desassembly.

It could be for engineering tolerance and easier disassembly. But It could be possible by heating up only the edge. Dont need to heat the middle part. Actually he starts disassembling from the edge.

AND in the following video he starts from the middle part.

Mind the gap! I have it too... pictures attached. I also noticed that the microsd tray rests really deep in the slot, leaving the chassis's sharp edges visible and unpleasant to the touch. Perhaps I am really picky when it comes to flagship phones, however, I can not overcome the yellow spots on the display:
MODEL ID: 2PS6200
HTC 10 (Glacier Silver)
My provider agreed to exchange the faulty unit with another one, just need to wait for it 5 more days. If I noticed the same issues again, I will go for an S7...

that's huge..
I have seen two demo units at store. One silver and one gold, both have noticeable gap at the top part of the display. Pretty disappointed since this is a 2016 flagship.

What about the microsd tray? Was it also too further in the slot leaving sharp edges exposed?
No gap here.
OMG!
Mine seems to have the same gap. I also do not care and won't be returning it for something so minor...
