[Q] The 'nice feature's thread. - HTC One X

Just got my One X and had a quick glance before tea. You guys found any cool features or tips/tricks? Decent apps maybe?
Share the wealth.

I can't recommend the xda app enough
I've changed my keyboard to swiftkey x and love it more compared to stock. Just feels easier to type with all this screen space. Only thing I can really recommend so far, I haven't entirely got it all setup how I'd like yet as I've been switching between my sg2.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA

One nice touch is pinch / zoom in the message app. Sometimes if I go out without my glasses, under certain lights I struggle. Just being able to resize text on the fly without messing with setting options is great.

Although it's a little bit old now, I love quick controls on stock browser. Enough to make me stick with it over chrome....for now anyway.

Definitely replace the browser! I like Smart Keyboard Pro but there are many good ones.
Neat tricks in sense... in the gallery there is a dropdown box to browse your/other peoples facebook galleries without having to use that steaming pile of a facebook app. Soundhound integration into radio app/widget is nice. Love the lockscreen when you get an sms/email etc.
M.

"guest mode"
anybody knows how to enable it? cannot seem to find it
some valuable 3rd party apps:
1tap cleaner - configurable to auto clean cache as frequent as every hour
screen off & lock - i personally put it on the dock so i don't have to always reach the power button
wifi file explorer - wireless data transfer
screebl - even you set your screen timeout to 15seconds, the screen won't time out as long as you handle your phone to the angle/axis you set on the configuration, good for reading on internet or books

I love the fact you can take pic from recorded video, brilliant.

Screenshot power+home...
Lovely as we had to struggle to take a Screenshot back in my IncS days

i didnt know about this!!

yup I think its what they call HTC gestures, wish they ate detailed somewhere
but one thing I suspect gestures mode seems to confuse the browser

OK, here's are two cool ones for you:
1. Quick Uninstall: from the app drawer, tap & hold on any "un-installable" app, you'll see the the bar at the top of the screen change to Cancel and Uninstall. Drag to Uninstall, confirm.... DONE. Compare this to Android's default behaviour!
2. Go to the Gallery app, pick a pitcure, tap Edit->Effects. Apply any effect, first, then tap Edit at the top right corner. You get to adjust Exposure, Sharpness, Contrast, Saturation, Vignette, add and combine MORE filters etc... and when you're done, you can save your adjustments as a NEW PRESET!
Awesome, yes?

This one has been around since Sense 3.0. You don't even need to scroll, just tap with two fingers at the relevant spot on the screen (tap on the bottom will take you to bottom entries, top to top entries!). You can also use it in:
- People - Scrolls by letter
- Dialer - Scrolls by letter
- Most other apps scroll by Date: Gallery, Messaging, Mail...
Cheers

Don't forget to change the Keyboard to Swiftkey!
If you don't want to buy the app : there is currently a free beta running for Swiftkey 3.0 -> http://vip.swiftkey.net

wow I did not know about that too!! Love such small nifty functions

I know ICS added the data usage feature where you can track and set limits for mobile data, but it seems HTC have extended on that to include a minute monitor and also SMS/MMS.
Very handy for people that don't want to be hit with a big bill

I'm with you on that. Been using SwiftKey for a long time, and the new beta has somehow managed to improve on an already amazing keyboard. Plus the new Cobalt theme looks gorgeous on the One X's screen.
Surely its swipe all the way. It's the best keyboard out there
I can't really get away with swiping to write. I used to use Swype back on Symbian/S60, but I much prefer SwiftKey's predictive text. Once you've used it for a little while (and it's learned from your emails/texts/social networking), you only really have to type the first couple of letters of a word for it to supply what you want. And if you're really predictable (or boring?) like me, once you've got the first word or two you can get through the bulk of a sentence with only one tap for each subsequent word. I struggle without it now, because it removes so much thought from typing on the phone keyboard.
Although we are kind of straying away from the 'nice features of the phone' discussion

Some Tips & Tricks

I stumbled across these and thought I would share. Feel free to add anything you might have found:
If you turn off auto-brightness, you can brighten the screen with a swipe of the finger. Just press the notifications area and move your finger left or right.
On both the homescreen and the apps menu you will see a row of dots indicating which page you are on. Hold the dot and scroll left or right. The pages will quickly scroll until you see the page you want.
You can focus your camera on a specific thing by touching that area on your screen.
In the camera app you can use the volume buttons to zoom in and out. OR you can pinch to zoom in and out.
Mute the Battery Notification (using Tasker) Directions are here.
Swipe left on contact name from the contact list and you'll automatically be able to send a text.
Swipe right on a contact name from the contact list and you'll automatically be able to call them.
Press your home button and lock screen button (power button) at the same time to save a screenshot.
You can scroll much faster on some apps such as YouTube, Astro File Manager and Market by using 3 fingers and if you scroll with 2 fingers you get precise scrolling (no scroll momentum).
Hold down the home button to access recent programs and the task manager.
Good stuff. Thanks!
Very useful tips, thanks!
But aren't these two basically the same thing?

I'll still never understand the logic of having a WHITE background in a messaging app... Talk about a battery killer!
That's one thing I'm going to miss about the Moment. Black background in the STOCK app, rather than having to install a 3rd party app.
All though, if I'm forced to, Go SMS is my preference.

Thanks for the tip! It worked but now I have a followup question. Is there anyway to use the Handcent Icon widget in my dock? One of the reasons I love Handcent is the widget that shows how many unread messages I have.
FYI, other reasons I like Handcent: the lockscreen popup, it allows me to use my own sounds/mp3s as ringtones and alarms, Emoji pack allows me to send and receive emoji icons with my iPhone friends
U can hold 2 points on the screen like with ur thumbs for example. Then tilt ur phone forward or back to zoom. Just like that 10.1 tablet

Can you turn off the silly "bubble" chat with Handcent yet? Last time I tried it (a year ago) I couldn't stand the comic book look.
I'll probably use Go SMS until a dev over at SDX reverse releases a black version of the stock SMS.apk.
I'm also hoping the old version of GMail works so I can copy it over and use it with LauncherPro with working mail counts.
U dont have to have to have the bubble look. Handcent gives us different options. Android style is included if u r curious

[APP][LAUNCHER] TasKarou Launcher Overlay

Tired of moving your fingers up/down your tablet to switch applications? Try out TasKarou!
TasKarou is a multitasking launcher overlay.
Taking inspiration from the 'Quick Controls' feature in the android browser, TasKarou provides a multitasking layer on top of a launcher on tablets.
By swiping anywhere on the left or right edge of your tablet screen, you can activate TasKarou's UI.
It gives you access to a quick, smooth, and intuitive interface to facilitate app launch, transition, and management for the user
The user interface brings a more responsive, and enjoyable level of interaction to your tablet.
Notes:
To use TasKarou, set it as the default home launcher, and from TasKarou's settings, select the actual home launcher you want to overlay.
TasKarou user interface is then triggered by swiping from either the left of right edge of your tablet screen, while still allowing access to the overlaid home launcher through the home button.
The app is also available in the android market.

It's not possible to use both at the same time, since both controls rely on the user touching the edge of the screen.
If you have an idea on how I could get around that issue, I'm all ear.

some ideas from the top of my head:
- disable taskarou menu completely when in browser
- disable one side of the screen (permanently or when in browser)
- disable the upper/lower/middle half of the screen (permanently or when in browser)
on another note, the notification HAS to go. at least make it optional.
that being said, i really do like the concept of the app :good: i found myself regularly swiping in from the screen edges when not in browser, and then being disappointed that nothing happened.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have a few other ideas along with the ones you suggest that I will try to integrate, and test in the following days.
In the meantime, I updated TasKarou to also support android phones. I duplicated this thread in the 'Android Apps and Games' section to make it more visible: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984010

Definitely slick in some aspects. Can't say I really like it as it messes with my LMT set up and takes up more RAM on top of it.
There's a lot to be done like distinguishing different "hotspots" and designating right side only or left side only. Overall though I really enjoy the transitions and how the menu auto-switches based on which choices you're hovering over. Very intuitive choices too that I agree with about which things go where.
Looking forward to the potential this holds in the future. I may just abandon my LMT setup if done right.
Edit: And of course the ability for users to add/edit the options, potentially switch the color for mere superficial reasons. Something like my screenshot.

Maybe ask SwipePad's developer.
(I'm not being sarcastic)
Really useful. Love the idea, but it does cause a few conflicts with apps that rely on swiping from the sides of the screen. Having said that, when I set the margin to 13 pixels I can use the Dolphin browser (for example) without too many issues by not swiping from the outer edge, but by placing the finger a little more away from the edge and then swiping inwards. Other apps are less forgiving.
What about a button in the notification area, which is visible at all times anyways?
EDIT:
If swiping has the preference, then it would be more logical to align the available programs/tasks to the side from which was swiped. Swiping and selecting can be done with one hand then, regardless of which hand was used to swipe with.
The recents button is useless, I never use it, ever.
I'd like the option to use this instead and just disable the side activation altogether.
Nice idea. However on TF101 after getting the quick control moving the finger to one of the options too fast causes the quick controls to disappear. I have to move the thumb really slow in order to select any option. Hopefully, this will be fixed soon:fingers-crossed:.
ppl get over it, the man is trying to make ur life simpler, so if u don't like some stuff about the app then tell him your opinions in a decent way so he can make a proper development for the app instead of trashing it, otherwise f*** off
I like this!
1. I only see it from the right edge in portrait.
2. Might have a user selected area(s) for its swipe. This would allow those with conflicts to fix them. There is a similar app on Play which just gives a row running/recent apps icons which is not a bad interface. I found its use of the bottom obtrusive.
3. The home key does not go home in the base browser (I am using Trebuchet on a CM10).
4. There is a difference between "running" and "recent" (exited, cached, and still available.) !!
Long press of home gives a vertically tiled thumbnail view of both.
Taskarou shows only icons of running apps, not recent.
Taskarou should show both, either in two panes or in one with some distinction?, i.e. frame around one or the other. I sort of like having the thumbnails and they could be tiled or cascaded. If cascaded, should be focus-able, if tiled, scroll larger view like the app list. Best eliminated the number of apps option or make that for the pane (but that would be scroll-able for more). Cascading the main webOS motif. Flick down to kill?

First of all, as far as I can see, no one is trashing his app. So maybe lower your tone a bit and at least pretend to be able to communicate in a proper way.instead of telling people to "F-off".
The developer probably appreciates the feedback as he responds to it. Feedback (be it positive or negative) is valuable for both him and the app he works on. The end product can benefit from any kind of feedback as it points out flaws and strong points, and it can give the developer some different perspectives and experiences from different users and from different devices.
The day a developer stops listening to his/her targeted market is the day the product will begin its downfall.

Was having issues on my Nexus 7 running SmoothRom 4.1.2. Updated to 4.2 and no more disappearing quick controls as soon as my finger leaves the border. To get them to stay I had to leave my finger there for at least 1.5 seconds. Now all is well. Really liking it. I look forward to extended and customizable menus
Update:
Scratch that. Conflict was gesture control. Had it set to consume events in starting zone. So a touch on the edge first went to gesture control. Just an iD10t error.

Lockscreen widgets on 4.2

There is an API for it.
I have read that third party widgets will be supported so we should see some interesting things come out.
For me though the whole lockscreen feels half baked at the minute, here's why
- too many varying inputs / start points.
- swiping the large space above the lock does nothing (why not let this reach the side panels?)
- swiping the clock sideways does nothing, tapping it emphasises the lock box?!
- the close keyboard arrow is shown if the keyboard was open when the screen was locked.
- the woeful clock font.
- and of course the lack of security.
I will undoubtedly be abused for not loving AOSP here but I honestly think this implementation could be way better. Imagine a new user coming to this lockscreen, a lot of "average users" will be completely unaware of the features and end up lost and confused by accidental activation of the emphasis boxes.

Right, I see...so that rather goes back to my first point on the list of there being too many inputs.
To go directly to the clock app we can now swipe the clock down to expand it, then press on it OR press the clock to highlight the unlock box, then swipe to unlock.
It's all rather muddled which is a shame because the added widgets are potentially very useful.

Well it makes great sense to be able to do it whichever way you like it best, and as for these points:
- swiping the large space above the lock does nothing (why not let this reach the side panels?)
- swiping the clock sideways does nothing, tapping it emphasises the lock box?!
It's simply because it's still a LOCK screen, and fixing these 2 would defeat the purpose of it hindering unwanted touches in you pocket...
I agree on most of the last points you make.
Not yet, but i hope pandora adds one, thatll be awesome
Hd widgets is the only one I've noticed so far
Falcon(a really nice twitter widget) has added support for lockscreen widgets according to the dev.
I have been using lock screen widgets since Froyo , Android 2.2, for the Executive Assistant app. This leads me to believe that lock screen widgets have always been a possibility, but app devs have not made use of them.

i REALLY like this, i think it just needs a few little tweaks and it will potentially forever be my first loaded app after a flash
I find the trigger point for swiping sometimes covering buttons a bit ang gets activated without fully intending. What about maybe making it activate on a triple click, or maybe a double click, with the slide on the second click? Dont know how well they would work, but just some thoughts i had to try to solve that issue.
Ahhh whilst just reloading it i noticed the home double click option, i'll give that a whirl
The other thing is that i woiuld like to be able to make the scrolling bars maybe be a little less themed. I've been checking out some similar programs and i just find the scrolling to not quite be as good on this. I'm thinking if the bars were simplified a bit, it could perhaps help that? or maybe it might be drawing them as an overlay, rather than actually using a full side of the screen for example. I do a lot of coding, but havent done any on android, so i've got some ideas, but just not sure if they would necessarily make much of a difference or not.
I'm just about to reload it now, but i'm just trying to remember if there is any sort of option to add shortcuts/actions etc to tabs, rather than just apps, something else to consider perhaps.
there are people complaining in the play store about it being a home launcher, i dont quite get what they mean, (yes it has the default action for launcher applied), but the way it uses it's backup launcher it really does seem to work "in addition" to the backup launcher. I'm thinking they are talking about screen redraws, but i couldnt get any to happen (maybe needs to be running a while longer)
Anyway overall i LOVE your work, but (and obviously it's the message from the play store comments) i'd love to see it be cut back more if possible, to try to avoid any noticeable impact to the system, and for the people on play (who arent really clarifying what they want i dont think) maybe trying to tweak it's interaction with the fallback launcher (i'm not sure exactly what their issue is as i said, i'm taking a bit of a stab)
:good:
reinstalled it just then and disabled the trigger, and set activation to double click home :good::highfive:
disabled themes as much as i could, i'll give it a spin like this and see how it goes.

What UI or theme tweaks would you like to have for your P6 ?

What changes would you like for your UI ?
Maybe possible suggestions can be forwarded to the Huawei developers so that they add into the new firmware upgrades. :victory:
Let me start with one : An LG G2 type guest user login option. I got no idea if its possible but ...
Another suggestion would be to get rid of the iphone looking theme with those box icons. I always stayed away from the iphone because of that.
And yes as some other user on this forum asked for, a more detailed notification on the lock screen. :good:
It would be nice if we had possible to switch to vanilla android look
More black.
Settings menu, phone, notification panel,...
Sent from my HUAWEI P6-U06 using xda app-developers app
A Motorola droid type wheel menu for the camera. Maybe they could just add the profile switching wheel for the camera too.
google play edition
make google play edition
that would be great!
I manufactured a rumour and posted on facebook:
Okay guys this is what the insider sources tell me on the upcoming Emotion 2.0 upgrade.
- Firstly chucking the old iphone looking theme for a more premium look and finish theme with a default standard brand huawei theme.
- The lock screen would allow the guest login mode.
- The bottom tray app icons would be swipe to scroll type making room for more.
- New Huawei exclusive live widgets and floating apps including a floating sms/email app.
- There is going to be selection of animated pet or figure (also targeting Asian users having a craze for Hello Kitty, Rilakuma, etc) which would be possible to pop open from anywhere and through this pet all notifications, alarms, internet search, floating apps, voice control, camera, connectivity toggles, etc would be possible. The pet can be awakened with a phone shake.
- The smart scroll feature that scrolls according to head movements making reading user friendly.
- Message reading is going to be upgraded with lot of swipe features like the swipe to delete or swipe to send feature.
- Swipe call feature on contacts if you want to directly call from contacts rather than the two step process of entering into the contact.
And many more nice tweaks which i don't remember right now. But from the sound of what he said, something big is coming soon by before last quarter or first quarter next year along with the latest android version.
Support Huawei everyone !!!!!

Why just black ? Why not user customizable along with theme and with less visibility so that wallpapers show behind it like Windows desktop bottom bar ?
I didn't see much use with the app drawer. All the frequent use apps i put on the front for quicker use and so my usage of app drawer was once in a while. Id say they have to come up with something new for placing the not so frequently used apps.
