Too bad i can't edit the post title. Please bare with me.
My fiancee gave me her Kindle Fire yesterday. She got it as a Christmas gift last year and has only started it once since. When i first took a look in the Device information in Settings it said it was running 6.2.2 Stock. So i went to sleep last night with the sound opinion that i would root it and install CM7 Barebones or something likewise and make it functional.
Waking up this morning, i read the beginners guide and i took a look at the rooting guide for the 6.2.2. I install the Java SDK, Android SDK, Google USB Drivers and i do EVERYTHING step by step as directed by the guide. Finally, at the last step, when i try to get the device recognized using cmd "android devices", it fails to recognize. The installation worked like a charm, exactly like in the guide, besides this last step. So i reboot both the KF and the PC, still not working, and surprise, my Device Settings now shows Stock version 6.3 installed, overnight. Take note, i did not approve something like this.
The KF is only recognized as a Disk Device in the Device Manager in Control Panel. I cannot get it to be recognized as an Android Phone. I tried uninstalling the KF through Device Manager, Devices & Printers, but it always reinstalls the driver from the directories. I edited the .ini files as per the guide, so i have no idea what might be wrong. I even uninstalled the Google USB Drivers from the Android SDK Manager and reinstalled them, and the same result is happening. As a last resort, i did a Factory Reset, deleted the drivers from Device Manager and SDK Manager and reinstalled them, to no avail.
How on earth can i get a CLEAN install of ADB and the recognition of my KF for rooting WITHOUT formatting my entire Windows PC? If i take it to another computer and plug it in and follow the Kindle Fire Utility instructions, do i still need to install the Google USB Driver through the SDK Manager, or just the other stuff?
On a side note, if i ever ever achieve this, what custom ROM runs Google Play Store perfectly?

Just use kfu 0.9.5. If I were u I would do latest update before rooting it. You can get it from amazon and manually update it. That's what I did.

This is normal on Stock, OTA updates without your consent unless you have disabled the setting.

The drivers included with KFU are all you need. If you are to plug it into a different computer, it's suggested that you run the drivers installation on KFU first before plugging in the Kindle Fire.

All I have tried have worked flawlessly, with some exceptions where I just had to flash gapps to fix it.
MAJOR EDIT:
I may have been stupid but something happened. Now i have the Kindle as a Disk Drive and i also have it as a SAMSUNG Android Phone. They both are installed correctly but i STILL CANNOT see the device through cmd "adb devices". It's just a blank line.
Any ideas?
Sorry for the double post but this is worth mentioning separately. I saw in a different post that someone who has Samsung Galaxy SII phones and relative drivers get the Kidnle recognized under Samsung Android Phone. How do i uninstall JUST the Samsung Galaxy SII drivers from my PC? I have a Galaxy SII phone so, figures. Also have Kies installed and Droid Explorer as it runs CM9.
plug in your s2 go to device manager in control panel and you will see the drivers
Read the drivers post I linked you to earlier.
Delete incorrect drivers from the Device Manager and take note of what it should read as.
It may sound a bit too simple, but really, most of the issues come from bad drivers.

Just use Kindle Fire Utility 0.9.5 (the latest version).
-> Just keep unplugging, plugging, uninstalling, reinstalling drivers -- and restartting the KFU utility until you can see "Online" as status in KFU.
-> Choose install permanent root with superuser
-> Reboot (power off and on the kindle fire if necessary)
this will automatically install TWRP and superuser and root your kindle fire.
then you can keep using stock ROM by going to extras -> install google framework (where you can use google play with go launcher) or use twrp to backup, restore and flash roms.

I tried the process on another laptop and it worked. I installed only the basic SDK Tools from the SDK Pack, leaving the development stuff and drivers out of it. Then, i downloaded KFU and used the drivers there as the only installed drivers on the separate PC, and it worked like a charm. I was able to root, install a custom ROM and do every other thing i wanted.
Thing is, on this computer, i can't really get rid of all the drivers and utilities because they keep getting installed back. Should i use something like DriverSweeper or anything of the sorts?

Okay this is what u do. If your kindle is not showing up in device and printers unplug your kindle and power it off. Install drivers from the kfu folder again. After this is completed turn on your device and then plug in your kindle. The kindle should show up as a device on device and printers menu. If your device is showing up click on kindle and then click on hardware. Then click on properties and change setting. There should be a option for update drivers. After clicking on update drivers its going to give you a option to search for drivers. Click browse. Since you have already downloaded the sdk and installed it on your computer install adb composite drivers. It should install the drivers. Now go back to kindle on devices and printers menu and click on kindle. Go back to hardware and check drivers. Under device functions: it should have amazon kindle USB 2. Android composite adb interface 3. E:\ 4. USB composite device 5. USB mass storage device. Now exit all of that stuff. Go back to kfu folder and click run. Make sure the adb status is online and the boot status is 4000. If boot status isn't 4000 then it will not work properly. So what I did was download kfu 0.9.4 and when I clicked on run adb status was online and boot status was 4000. If you do see that, click install permanent root and su (option 2). When this is completed go back to kfu 0.9.5 and adb status should be online and boot status should say 4000. If this is the case go ahead and click 2 again and it should install permanent root and su and twrp. This is what worked for me.

My girl got a Kindle Fire and wants Jelly Bean on it. I plug it into the laptop, Windows start to look for drivers, can't find them. So, thru KFU I install the drivers, open KFU, device is not showing. I open adb, run adb devices, blank. Run adb usb devices,, device not found.
The kindle will say that its connected to the computer and I can transfer files. But windows will not show an external device is attached. So, I go to Device Manager, its an "unknown device". So I looked through post after post, finding out that I need to edit the adb_usb.ini file. Problem is, I can't get to it......
I'm not a noob when it comes to computers or android, but this has me lost......

I had same problem. Errore was plug first kindle then install kfu with drivers. Remove all drivers you installed. Now install drivers provided with kfu. Make sure SDK and java is ok. Then plug kindle.

smsrat84 - when you plug KF into USB and Windows starts to scream about new unrecognized device, choose an option to install drivers manually from a specified location, and choose {KFU_HOME}/drivers/kindle - KFU will see it after that. Then install FFF, TWRP with KFU and so forth.
Try using Linux (yes I said the dreaded 'L' word ) because apparently it's not as fiddly with drivers as Windows is.
Personally, I used Mac and it was plain sailing all the way. No drivers, everything just worked first time [Just make sure you're careful, nothing is foolproof ]

Hey I'm a brand new member so I apologize in advance if my problem has been solved already, however, I could not find anything on any of the threads. Okay so I am severely confused right now. I have had my Kindle Fire for almost a year now and this problem has never occurred. Ever since I got my Kindle I have been experimenting on it. I rooted it and have flashed many different custom roms. I had been using TWRP Recovery 2.0 for a long time and when I found out that it was outdated I updated it to the new 2.2.1.1 version...Everything seemed to be working perfectly until I tried mounting USB storage in the new TWRP...It did not work. My computer wouldn't recognize it. I kind of just let this slide since I figured I wouldn't need to mount USB storage in TWRP unless it was an emergency. A while later I switched back to the Kindle's stock rom. That's when I noticed that it would not mount...Not only was TWRP not mounting, but it was my Kindle altogether. I deleted all drivers that had any thing to do with Android from my computer. After restarting both my computer and my Kindle I tried mounting again...Nothing. The drivers weren't even reinstalling. To test wether this was a problem with my computer or my Kindle I got my brother's Kindle Fire (Never had any tweaking done to it) and mounted USB storage. It installed the drivers and mounted just fine. I then plugged my Kindle back in and it mounted just fine also. I thought I had solved the issue, but about an hour later I tried mounting my Kindle again and nothing happened. My brother's Kindle will mount (Actually there are a total of four Kindles in my house all of which have not been tweaked except for mine) but mine won't do anything. As a last resort I deleted EVERYTHING with TWRP and flashed the Kindle Fire 6.3.1 update.zip. My Kindle is now true factory default (no root, custom recovery, etc...). I thougt for sure this would work but IT STILL WON'T MOUNT USB STORAGE!!! When I plug my Kindle in and go to "Devices and Printers" it recognizes my device as a "Kindle" but I just cannot get it to mount! I am now stuck with a Kindle that cannot be re-rooted or anything due to the fact that it cannot be recognized with ADB. Sorry for the long post...I am just trying to give as much information as possible. By the way I am running Windows 7 and my Kindle is the only one that will not mount which makes this problem have nothing to do with drivers or my computer. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Wheww okay well try a factory reset this will wipe your sdcard as well. It should resolve most your problems. There are multiple things that can cause this to happen but one thing that really comes to mind. Are you ejecting your kindle before hitting the disconnect button? Just a wild guess but failing to do so can cause this disorder the very next time you plug it in. Something that could resolve minor sdcard issues is

don't let this make you to crazy yet RC soupmagnet should be releasing something very soon that will solve the majority of SD card mount problems hint hint . You will need to reroot and flash a custom ROM on it to have success though. So if nothing works hang tight and stay tuned.

Yeah I downloaded the newest Kindle Fire Utility and installed thoose drivers. When I plug my Kindle in and go to "Device Manager" it lists it as an android phone with ADB Interface. If I plug any other Kindle in then it installs new drivers and doesn't list the ADB Interface. Is this normal?

I don't use Windows so I couldn't tell what's normal for that OS.
Use the tutorial here to confirm your drivers are installed properly. Then Shift + right-click on your KFU "tools" folder with adb.exe and fastboot.exe, and select "Open command window here". Enter your adb or fastboot commands there and see how it goes. Start with "adb devices" to see if you are connected. If not, reinstall your drivers and try again.
Some ROMs have different product IDs than the stock OS so you may want to look into that if you are using a custom ROM, and edit your androidwinusb.inf accordingly. I know some JB roms have a PID of 0004 instead of 0006.
If for some reason Windows refuses to cooperate, you could always set up a Linux LiveUSB and get it done a lot easier.
Okay so I've been fiddling around with stuff. I completely uninstalled all Android drivers again then restarted my PC and Kindle. This time I plugged my Kindle in and it installed the correct drivers. It mounted USB just fine. When I tried reinstalling the ADB drivers that came with Kindle Fire Utility it erased the Kindle's normal drivers, so now it won't mount anymore...at least I know that it is a driver problem and that my Kindle doesn't need to be repartitioned. I'm really getting sick of Windows and its annoying drivers...Any ideas on how to get all the drivers to work? If not I think I might just install Ubuntu and screw the need for drivers.

If you run the driver bat packaged with kfu with the device plugged in sometimes it will waste the mass storage drivers. It`s always best to run it then plug the device in and see what windows decides to install. Unplug, replug, unplug, replug as well as try this while in recovery because it will also attempt to install the drivers as well in recovery.

I downloaded the lates kindle fire utility and I enabled debugging, I can see my files but when I run the utility file the adb says offline. I cannot figure it out. : (
I've spent most of today trying to root my Kindle Fire, which I just got in the mail today. I installed Android SKD and have followed multiple instruction guides to the letter, but when I go to root it in KFU, it says it can't find my Kindle. I've scoured the internet looking for a solution to this, but so far nothing seems to work, and every time I try to change the device software in device manager, it says the software is up to date and won't let me change no matter what I do. I'm kind of at a loss and my brain is fried, help would be much appreciated.

FIRST OFF STOP USING KFU UNLESS YOU ARE SURE IT'S A KF1 WHICH YOU PROBABLY WOULDN'T HAVE RECIEVED TODAY.
1) was the box black or brown

uninstall the drivers from device manager, unplug kindle, install drivers from kfu, plug in kindle, profit

I installed ABD drivers and uninstalled all pre-existing Kindle Fire drivers, but I don't know how to install the Kindle specifically with those drivers? When I plug it in it just installs itself with no prompting from me so I don't know what I'm supposed to do.
I'm on WIndows 8, by the way.
Not trying to be difficult but I suggest you keep reading until it becomes more clear.
ESPECIALLY if you are "new to all this".. just try to read as much as you can in all of the KF2 threads.
PS. It sounds like the drivers are installed.. either check device manager or test with "adb devices"

I don't have windows 8, but you may have to turn off driver signature verification.
I've already turned off signed drivers. And ADB is enabled on my Kindle, if that matters.
I uninstalled the Kindle drivers with the Kindle unplugged, then installed the KFU drivers, then plugged in my Kindle. It says it's using the MPT USB driver. I tried to update the driver software, clicked "browse my computer for driver software," clicked "browse," found the folder containing the .inf file. It said my software is up to date. I tried again, hit "have drive" instead, found the .inf file, it said the folder I specified doesn't contain a compatible file (even though I selected a file, not a folder??)
I ran KFU, tried to root it, it said fastboot uses a different device than ADB.
I don't know where to go from here, this is where I've been stuck for like an entire day. I've looked for ways to change the driver and I can't find anything that works.

What software version do you have?
I'm thinking you will have 10.2.6, which would make it a Kindle Fire 2.
If it is a KF2, I think you would be best following this guide.

Thanks for the linky, i grabbed it today and for some reason, it's not detecting my device. I've installed/reinstalled the drivers that came down with v0.9.8, still same results. Shows the driver Android ADB Device
When I run the option 2 to install root & superuser error encountered. We are unable to locate your kindle fire. Fastboot uses a different device than ADB. ck device mgr for Kindle or Amazon (when looking, neither are listed.)
So tried to just boot it to FastBoot and same results, device not found.
So being dummy me, i ran the Run script as admin, now i get the Tools\wget cannot be found. Thought maybe it was a long file name issue, so copied folder to c:\temp\ - still same results.
What am I doing wrong here guys?

Put everything back where it belongs first. Also, your computer recognizes the kindle as an Android adb device in device manager? You are on 6.3.2 also?

I do have it on 1.4.a as well.
I did remove all of the drivers to the point win7 was showing kindle with an !. Reinstalled and rec'd same results. Got pissed at it and removed drivers again rebooted and removed the files under .android. When I get a chance, i'll try reinstall. Maybe by manually deleting the inf file will do some good???. I'll update the post when I have a chance to work on it.

Have you tried running KFU under compatibility for Windows XP SP3? Once you do that, it'll automatically ask for admin privileges.

The one that ichigo said is good.
So I was using the new KFU 9.8+ on my first gen kindle (6.3.2)
and during the procedure while I think it was attempting to install FFF bootloader it was on <waiting for device>, my laptop lost batter life and shut down. Upon booting up my computer and trying KFU again
ADB Status: Offline
Boot Status: Unknown
My kindle now displays the logo. I assume it's bricked right now.
Are there any remedies to fix this?

It is on the orange logo? And it won't boot properly? So the kindle just stays on that screen without getting dim or anything, right?

I know how to delete the .android folder, but how can I be sure that the deleted drivers are the one associated with adb and not with other programs ? are those the drivers in Windows/system32 ?

The .android folder is found under the root of your sdcard or you ext-sd. To remover the drivers:
If you are on Windows 7/8:
Hit the "Start" button on the keyboard, and when the homescreen (Windows 8) or the Start dialogue (Windows 7) pops up, type in "Add or remove".
Hit enter on the highlighted option, which should be "Add or remove programs". (Note: You may have to go into the settings tab if you are running a search on Windows 8)
This will show you a window where all the apps that are currently installed on your computer shows up. (Metro apps don't show up here.) Look through the list until you find your KF drivers. This should be listed as something like this: Kindle Fire Drivers
Highlight the driver and look towards the top of the window. You should see that a "Change/uninstall" button has popped up. Click on that and follow the on-screen instructions to uninstall the drivers.
You're done!
If you are on an older version of Windows:
The procedure is the same, only you have to go into Control Panel > Add or remove programs to do this.

I had the Same issue found it was just stuck in Fastboot mode and Windows does not handle it well at all. I was getting a USB device not recognized error and wouldnt let me change the driver for it. To get back booting again I used

Followed the direction and everything was good.... Almost I found no matter what computer I use fastboot always comes up as a bad device. :crying:

When I run the option 2 to install root & superuser error encountered. We are unable to locate your kindle fire. Fastboot uses a different device than ADB. ck device mgr for Kindle or Amazon (when looking, neither are listed.)
So tried to just boot it to FastBoot and same results, device not found.
So being dummy me, i ran the Run script as admin, now i get the Tools\wget cannot be found. Thought maybe it was a long file name issue, so copied folder to c:\temp\ - still same results.
What am I doing wrong here guys?

I have the same error.
What i did was...
1. Download KFU 0.9.9 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192818)
2. Download TWRP (http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/blaze)
3. Download FFF (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1369405)
4. I rename them as "twrp" and "fff" respectively and place them in the "recovery" folder in KFU
5. I manually install the drivers
6. I check in the device manager to show me "Android Phone - Android Composite ADB interface"
7. I run the KFU
and that was all...
I check the root was complete with the https://play.google.com/store/apps/...GwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5qb2V5a3JpbS5yb290Y2hlY2siXQ..
not visible on my pc.
Hey, I took the first step to root my kf on 6.3.2. I can no longer see the devise on my computer to do anhything else. I only loaded the utility file onto the devise and now what? I can't even delete it. Any thoughts?

So, I went through all the steps outlined by xarenmi, but it STILL doesn't recognize my kindle when I try to use the run tool.
I'm not the best with all this, so...

Hey, I finally got the google winusb driver installed (I had to do it via SDK manger) but it still recognizes my kindle as "kindle" under "other devices" in the device manager. Also the KFU will not recognize it.. period. just nothing and I'm getting really fed up.
I have followed all instuctions to the T and I am still having issues.
So as the title suggests I have a bit of problem.
Problem: Kindle fire (gen1 6.3.2) won't show up on adb or as a connected device (Windows 7, previously worked fine)
How I got there.....
So I ran KFU 9.8+ so I could root and install JellyBean
It was

trying to install fff
and it was taking a long time so I closed the window to try again.
This left my kindle in fastboot.
After trying KFU again it wouldn't recognize the device.
So I used fastboot and booted into twrp off of my computer.
From there I got to the regular twrp screen, and decided it would be a good idea to root my device from twrp.
So it booted up and I got a notification to finish the root process, which it prompted me to download SuperSu.
It booted up and tried to install the update.zip which failed and booted up normally.
So now I can't connect over adb, and windows 7 doesn't recognize it at all.
I'm trying to find a way to get firefirefire on it so it won't fail when it tries to root itself.
I did a system restore on my kindle, notification still pops up.
I tried booting it into fastboot with KFU, without luck.
As of now the kindle boots pretty much normally and works fine except for connecting over usb.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What i would do of i were you is uninstall everything on your computer that is related to the kindle. Do you have another computer you can this Kindle on to make sure that it isn't a driver instead of your computer.

Oddly enough my kindle shows up just fine on my mac, and a win7 desktop.
Although on the windows machine there was a problem installing drivers, but it still popped up as a removable drive.
Do you think i'd be able to run KFU on it again without any hiccups?
Also along with that, how long should I let it run?
Is this a 5 minute procedure or like 30min?

You can check to see if ADB sees the device. If it does then you should be able to use KFU. It's been a while since i used the KFU as i have been rooted for a few months and have forgotten what it has inside it.
I will recommend to always check your adb and make sure it works because from ADB you can tell the device to do a variety of different things. This came extremely helpful when i was working on my gf's Insprie 4G and i by accident froze the device.
Also, this procedure is really fast. I've rooted a bunch of devices and they all take no more then 10 mins. Unless you have an HTC device and have to get the bootloader unlock from HTC (as in the Inspire).
