GNex not recognized in Windows 7 - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I need help getting my Windows 7 x64 to recognize my GNex.
Whenever I plug it in I dont hear the default USB plug-in sound (Windows), but my phone is charging.
I cannot mount my storage either in recovery or inside Android.
My device manager is not showing errors and my GNex at all.
Tried installing the Google USB Driver from SDK, no luck
Tried PDANet which did not install because of missing drivers.

Use a program called usbdeview and uninstall the drivers you have installed for the Gnex. Then use the galaxy nexus toolkit to install the correct ones.

You dont by chance have the "fast charge" mod enabled through your kerenel do you? Because if so you will need to disable the feature first before plugging up to you Windows machine.

This is starting to become an "epidemic".. :O

I can almost guarantee that it's usb fast charge, devs should really put a warning on that

I too have a Win7 x64 laptop and had a similar issue, but the Device Manager did report an error with the Android 1.0 and/or Samsung driver. I had to manually update driver for it to work thru Device Manager.

Woops. Well there are some ways to check what is disturbing the connection. Let's start at the beginning:
Check if your phone is configured to interact with your computer. After conneting your phone you should get a selection list in your phones notification bar. Make sure to select usb storrage from that list.
On your windows computer go to [start] and type "device manager". After the application (that shows all hardware devices connected to the system) loaded connect your phone and check if something changes. If everything works all right you should get your nexus. If a question mark apears double click it to check the problem.
Try yo connect your device to another computer or with another cable. If the problem is not solved by above steps contact your seller.
If this is not possible install Airdroid and connect your phone to your computers browser or ES file Explorer to browse your pc over the network

Ok, I'm having this issue, but Windows doesn't even recognize anything is plugged in! I tried it on a TON of computers at work with several different USB cables. Nothing! All I get is charging, but no options in the top menu or anything. Is this a toasted Nexus? I just got it, now I can't even transfer files to its storage. I've been transferring files through dropbox...which is annoying...if it is USB Fastcharge, how do I disable it?

Their IS a fix for this, but we need the code to get into the PhoneUtil menu and turn USB back on.
It's an issue with Samsung phones apparently, and here's a fix someone found a while ago.
http://blog.vacs.fr/index.php?post/...ot-detected-problem-on-Android-Samsung-phones
We just need the PhoneUtil code for the Galaxy Nexus and we should be all set.

Check your drivers

What annoys me is that when I got the phone it was already rooted and I didn't have a chance to try it stock or back up the original. It was rooted with an older version, so I flashed 4.0.4 on it. Check out the reviews on newegg I'm not alone in reporting a messed with Galaxy Nexus.
Sent From My Asus Nexus Bumblebee

My issue is definitely hardware. I sent my GNex back and they sent me back a new one which I received yesterday. I checked and this one wasn't previously rooted or Unlocked. It worked for a day (worked as in windows saw it and I could xfer music/books/comics to it) after I get home from work Windows stopped recognizing it. I did NOTHING to the phone, it just stopped being seen by windows. I only used the cable that came with it and charged it the night before using the supplied adapter, but the USB still stopped working. Last resort I did a system restore to the phone and the USB still doesn't show up in anything ,Tried 5 of my Windows PC's A bunch of PC's at work, my friends Mac, my Ubuntu powered Netbook, my Xbox360 and PS3, even the Transformer Prime using the keyboard dock. This is telling me it's a hardware issue with the Device. Might be somthing wrong with the latest batch of GNex's but the USB seems to give out. Even if I put the phone in ODIN mode NOTHING recognizes it. So, before you all waste your time finding a fix, this is 100% absolutly a hardware issue with these phones, I don't know why, but I had Two bad ones in a row, and am Hoping my 3rd isn't borked too.
I have a bad history with Android phones....My first Nexus One wouldn't stay on, so I got a replacement from HTC. My first two G2x's would constantly reboot, It wasn't until the 3rd one that I got a working one. Now I'm hoping I don't have to go through 4 bad Galaxy Nexus' before getting one that actually works!
I have the opposite luck with tablets....the Novo7, Iconia A100 and Transformer Prime have been perfect outa box. This ordeal with android phones makes me seriously consider exchanging the GNex for an iPhone4s....but the iPhone4s screen is SOOOOO tiny!!!

[Q] Cannot install Windows 7 64 bit Drivers

I've tried everything I can possibly think of. I have an Asus Laptop with Windows 7 64 bit and absolutely cannot get my Epic to be recognized. I've uninstalled and re-installed the driver more times than I care to mention. I've tried mounting the device to no avail either. I've tried plugging in the phone into each of the USB ports on the laptop to no avail. I need to get the computer to recognize the device so I can get odin to recognize the phone so I can flash back to stock. Right now it doesn't do so. Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do to get this up an running?
Try installing the 32-bit drivers even if you're on a 64-bit computer....
The same issue comes up. It says that the drivers are not successfully installed (even though the installer goes through) and it says "Unknown Device" over and over.
Are you removing previous drivers?
then rebooting before installing new drivers...
also are you using stock cable?
if so buy a new cable you can get cheap ones online for like a dollar just search micro usb cables
Yes, yes, yes. Does the cable really make that much of a difference? I saw that people have had issues but I mean it charges properly all the time so I figured it was ok to use.
Absolutely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
That cable is worthless get a Blackberry cable they are very durable and dependable.
i was having problems also..... all because of the cable.
I'll probably go buy a cable from Walmart, order a cheaper one online from Monoprice and return the other just so I can odin my phone...I really hope that's the issue though.

does it keep looping "unknown device" in the corner, almost like you unplugging and plugging back in repeatedly?
ifso try cleaning the contacts of the usb port on phone and on the small end of the cable.
if not then try totally uninstalling the drivers you installed and if possible when its saying "unknown device" open the device manager, r-click then unistall in there.
USBDview has always been able to dig me out of the home when ive had usb related driver issues... just run it and delete/uninstall anything samsung/android/adb etc related, reboot pc and phone then try again...maybe even redownload the drivers
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usbdeview-x64.zip
http://firon.net/xda/usb_drivers_GalaxyS_x64.zip
update (you replied as i was typing): one bandaid for the cable you could try for now is to take a needlenose pliers or something and slightly squish the micro end to try getting a tighter fit.... i had to do that to the cable i keep at work.
You can always just download kies. That's what I did. When I was trying the standalone drivers I had trouble. Installed kies on both of my laptops and coding works beautifully everytime. And I seriously think you guys are ill. Its a cable... its digital. It either works or.it doesn't. I use my samsung wire exclusively. Its thin and I like contour on the plug. Both cables have worked flawlessly on both of my epics.

You are wrong.
Cables can have breaks in them which give them intermittent connectivity. Also, since this cable has several (5 I think?) single strands of wire in them, a single wire could be screwed up causing this (or the pin for a single wire on either end) That would still allow it to charge, and partially be recognized by Windows, but not allow it to fully communicate causing this problem.
I have a cable that I only use for charging because it has this EXACT problem. Another cable works perfect, but this particular cable gives me the unknown device.

Right.. so it either works or it doesn't lol if both cables are in perfect working condition then there would be no issue. Its all preference. I personally use a blackberry micro usb cable. It locks in to the usb port on the phone better. Just so im not paranoid about the wire coming off while flashing... cuz thats bad lol

I didn't articulate myself clearly, but that is my fault.
If a single wire inside the cable is broken (for the sake of simplicity let's just say it is the RECEIVE cable - from the device to the PC). The PC can recognize that there is a device there, but because the device can't talk to the PC, Windows can tell there is something there, but has no idea what it is since the device can't talk back to the PC. Also, in this scenario the cable would charge just fine since those individual lines are intact.

To quote u "Yes yes yes" it does make ALL THE DIFFERENCE... I had the same problem and made serveral posts about it when the phone 1st came out, I tried everything... Uninstalled/Reinstalled/Rebooted many times, Manually deleted the folders where the drivers are held then Re-installed, Installed Kies (which is a P.O.S. and was a BIG WASTE OF TIME imo.) I tried everything and just about gave up until 1 day i looked @ my roomate and asked him 2 let me borrow his cable to his cheap cricket phone 2 see if it would make a difference.
Well it worked... Get a new cable, if you've done what ive done and it still doesnt work, its the cable and not the drivers
I've done just about all I freaking can on this as well.
I've installed, un-installed, and re-installed the drivers. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit on Bootcamp.
I've used USBDView, I've uninstalled all of the connected drivers. They get re-installed, but the phone keeps keeps coming up as an Unknown Device. I try and locate the Samsung USB drivers directory, but it keeps coming up as Unknown.
Does anyone know specifically what directory I should use choose when trying to manually link the driver in Device Manager? I'm having a ***** of a time here.
Anybody have any ideas for me? Thanks.
I had the same problem. Buy a new cable from monoprice. The second I bought a new cable for my 64 bit Asus laptop it worked.
Trust me, buy a new cable.

I had the same problem. I didn't follow directions to solve my problem in Odin. I had to start Odin and plug my phone in and quickly put the phone into download mode. I did that a few times and finally got it to recognize. With Syndicate, it now recognizes every time. I say that now. LOL
This is how I fixed this problem. After doing all I could think of, uninstall, install, system restore, nandroid restor to when phone was being recognized... all these didn't work for me. I still got the same unknown device in device manager.
The fix: with samsung epic drivers already installed. Turn the phone on, plug into your computer. Let device manager find unknown device. Power off the phone. Boot into recovery. Pc will recognize your phone as samsung android device. Reboot your phone and you should be good to go. Hope this works for the rest of you. Good luck.

[Q] Windows 7 Doesn't Recognize my Continuum...

So I'm attempting to root the Continuum, but for some reason the phone won't effectively connect to Windows 7. For example, when I hook the phone up to my Samsung i7 laptop, all the phone does is charge. It doesn't even ask me if I would like to use usb storage or anything. The computer also doesn't recognize the device. Any ideas? Thanks!
A couple questions first:
- Did you install the Continuum drivers?
- Does your phone bring up the USB connection in the status bar?
- Does it bring up the Verizon VCast website on connection?

1. I likely did not install the Continuum drivers, and I have no clue where to get them. I'm assuming Samsung's website, but it's a bit hard to figure out and navigate...
2. My phone does not bring up the USB connection in the status bar.
3. When I go to the browser, it brings up the Verizon website with news, etc.
It should probably be stated as well that this phone is not activated. I am using it on wifi only for the time being because I traded it with a friend for another phone.
Alright, so I've figured it out. Strangely enough, I was just using a generic USB to microUSB cable, and I actually needed to use a Samsung cable. Weird, right?

So...now that I'm rooted, how in the world do I install a custom rom? I saw that there's a ClockworkMod Recovery out, but what does "Odin" mean? I'm coming from an LG Optimus V and have extensive experience rooting and installing custom roms and recoveries, but I've never heard of that before. Thanks again!
First, we dont have much for custom roms on this phone. The couple we do have contain fairly well written "how-to's" for them.
Second, if you are not sure, do some research and find out as many answers with the vast pool of knowlendge at your fingertips (the interwebs) as you can. There has already been a swarm of questions asked, and I am sure the answers may already be there for you.
I am waiting for the update and Froyo roms to come out before I bother with custom roms, but I am not holding my breath for that. I will probably be on my next Android phone before I will bother. Modding it up with Widgetlocker, ADW Launcher, and some other goodies at the moment to tide me over.
I had this same problem today. USB mass storage wasn't working, adb wasn't working. I wasn't using the samsung cable, but I can't see how that would make a difference, as the cable I was using has worked for literally a couple dozen different phones from different manufacturers - including other samsungs. I had the samsung drivers installed.
The owner claims that only media sync works on his computer as well, and that usb mass storage has never worked. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
i am also getting this problem. as far as i know i am still using the samsung cable, as normal micro-usb cables dont fit in the continuums port. ill look for another one, but this is quite odd. what i have done (all windows 7 64 bit):
drivers uninstalled
drivers installed
lagfix on
lag fix off
factory reset (within adrenalyne's rom)
i am going to try to transfer the stock rom via bluetooth and see if that works
edit: turns out that isnt possible without odi recognizing the device, which it doesnt (not even in download mode). this is very peculiar
some more information: nothing even shows up in device manager. no unknown devices, nothing. the phone charges, but thats it. i might go to the verizon store and see if i can get another cable
My guess is because you are using a 64 bit version of windows..

Why would that matter at all?
The 64bit version of Windows 7 is notorious for not being compatible with a lot of devices. There just arent any 64bit drivers. If you dont understand how to run your software in the proper compatibility mode you will run into problems. I used the x64 version of Win7 for about 12 seconds after I realized my ancient usb optical mouse didnt work lol.
My advice, try running the Samsung driver installer in compatibility mode and see if that doesnt help.

Compatibility mode won't do anything in the case of drivers. I'm not sure what your issue is though as all of my Samsung phones have been picked up fine from within Windows 7 x64. Is the phone picked up on any non-Windows 7 computer? Have you checked in Device Manager to see if it just needs installed?
its the cable. i took mine to the verizon store, they tested it, and gave me a new one for free. works perfectly now
Excellent, problem solved!
So it turns out a factory reset fixed it. Using a moto cable. So that's definitely not the issue. Flashing froyo now. Thanks!
I have encountered that a few times also. Its weird cuz when I plugged the usb into ac charger it almost immediately asks if I want to mount sd for data transfer. 20 mins later I unplug usb from unit and plugit into my win7 pc and nothin? So plugged back into ac unit and it recognize....so I mounted and it didn't know what to do lol. I then plugged back intopc...waited...changed orientation and 'Boom' pc sees it...in fact I change orientation whenever it seems to hang and seems to work....
sent from my XDA phone - its more than a continuum
I should also note that I have never used a samsung cable and every usb micro I've used (moto, kodak,BB,Lg) has fit and worked. But I have noticed some usb related quirks since froyo update like no lock screen after charging till I push home button, inaccurate batt icon (goes from 3/4 to 1/4 in like 10 mins but overall batt life is same as before)...
On an unrelated note I also can't get v6supercharger to work...?

[Q] Galaxy nexus USB data stopped working (still charges)

My Nexus is stock but it is unlocked.
I have the latest CWM on there (touch 5.8.0.2)
I was currently downloading all the necessary stuff to flash to AOKP but havent even got there yet because all of the sudden my USB isn't working.
I have tried two different cables, the stock one and a different one (both which were working before).
I get charging working through USB but no file transfer.
I just did a wipe data/factory reset and wipe cache via Recovery, and still nada.
Am I cooked here? B-stock with no warranty from Expansys, now currently kicking myself for not buying brand new.
[edit] yes MTP and USB Debug were/are both checked on
[edit2] a lot of my searches seem to indicate that you can move and transfer via adb in recovery or fastboot while having this error. I am not finding that to be the case.
[edit3] windows 7 does not show any indication of a usb drive or anything plugged in as it used to before. This is obviously making it hard for me to try things like reinstalling drivers and whatnot.
thanks
It probably has nothing to do with the USB port...
Plug your phone into your computer, and then scroll the status bar down. You should see a notification "Connected as xx" Select that, then make sure connect as MTP is checked, if it's connected via ptp (camera) it won't allow you to sync files, for what reason so ever...
If that doesn't help, then reflash stock ROM, that usually helps.. With most problems anyway...
If both of these don't work, then I'm sorry, but I can't help you. I'd then call Samsung, and send it in...
LG Simon
Yea MTP was already checked on. USB debugging being on would have auto kicked in as well.
I flashed AOKP but still the same issues. The hardware might have gotten bonked - I hate how fragile these tiny little ports are!
Is there some kind of diagnostic I can run to see if it is truly a hardware issue?
It's the kernel, try another one

the same thing is happening to me, it started yesterday too!

Mine started doing this. Would charge‚ but sometime I couldn't transfer data or use adb. It seems that the USB didn't like to stay in my computer. Any little movement would unplug it just enough to keep it charging but nothing else.

I've since tested the MHL cable and also tried using the usb host cable to connect a mouse and both work... does that mean my data connection theoretically could be fine?
I'm using AOKP #23 with Trinity and not had this issue at all. Whether it's because I combine the ROM, Gapps and kernel before flashing I don't know but my phone is running fine

Had this same issue yesterday ( phone was 1 day old ) had it plugged into my windows 7 machine and all of sudden the machine couldnt see it. So I wiggled the cable sure enough the computer saw it, jiggled it again and it would lose connection to the PC. Tried this on several PCs with Several cables and same result everytime. If I held the cable connected to the phone at the right angle it would never lose connection.
Ran to Verizon and the numbskull behind counter tried telling me that is normal and I would just have live with it, almost punched him in the throat. Demaded he go get another phone and show me if that one does it. It didnt so he swapped it and was to hasty about it, ended up giving me another cable charger and headphones WOOT WOOT
new phone doesnt do it as of this writing
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1427539 This is probably the issue you guys are experiencing. Seems like you should swap it in or try to fix it yourself by changing the USB charging board.

Just so y'all know...Fast Charge is simply tricking your phone into thinking it's plugged into an AC outlet...rather than a USB port.
Thus MTP won't work.
same issue here
I'm having the same issue here. Charging works fine with 2 computers and multiple USB cables (as well as AC and car charger adapters), but data transfer has completely stopped working. My computer won't see my phone at all. I have the correct drivers (given that I used them to connect to my computer when I first rooted and unlocked the bootloader). Tried changing the drivers, but I can't get my phone to show up in Device Manager at all. MTP and USB Debugging are enabled.
The only thing I can think of is that I dropped my phone while it was connected, and now the USB cable only charges the phone if I bend it in a certain way (it usually requires upward pressure where the cable plugs into the phone to work). However, other USB charging cables work just fine without any pressure. Is there any chance that a new OEM Samsung USB cable might solve my problem? The other cables I've used weren't OEM.
I normally use a wi-fi data transfer app because the USB data transfer has been slow since day one, so that can be worked around. What IS a major problem for me is that I'm trying to re-root my phone after my root access was lost with the 4.0.4 OTA update. I didn't keep up with the news and only realized last week that my root access had been lost because I tried to do things that required root. Since the OTA update trashed my CWM recovery image, I seem to have no way to re-root and reinstall CWM aside from going back to my computer and doing what I did the first time. But if I can't connect to my computer, I can't do that. It also seems that I would need computer access to remove root in case I bring it back to Verizon for a replacement under warranty.
So on another note, if you guys know of a way to re-root my phone without connecting it to my PC, I'm all ears...

I have run into a lot of USB defects on the phones I have received. It might be wise to get Samsung to repair it, but you will be without a phone for a week. You could also try another cable.
I used to have similar issues except where the power got routed into the data port, frying my phone in multiple areas.
On Samsung's repair ticket they said REPLACED COMPONENT (I'm assuming this is the usb controller and port) this could be the solution but it requires sending it in.

Just came back from holiday so I've got some pictures to store on my computer, but I can't get my phone to connect to it. It charges fine when connected which is also bemusing, since it can't do anything else. It's definitely not my computer's problem as I've tried other computers to no avail. I've been looking around the internet but none of the solutions worked for me.
My Nexus is rooted with stock ROM on 4.2.1 Jelly Bean and hasn't had many other problems in it's lifetime, although sometimes when I go into the Gallery app it will tell me "No external storage available" and I cannot use it until I restart the phone, where the problem diminishes and reappears after a few days. I was wondering if these problems were linked in any way perhaps?
Thanks for any input guys, would really appreciate it

You tried a different USB cable? Just a thought...
Is USB fast charge enabled?
I had the same problem - turns out it wouldn't connect on my PC's front USB ports, but does work on the rear ones.
first be sure that fast charging is disabled, second try other usb port if not try other usb cable if not try another computer, if not...i dont know!
Maybe usb-debugging is on and your PC has a driver Problem with usb-debugging?
Else: Go to device management and look if the device is properly shown also galaxy nexus.
Else2: I don't know. Maybe open the window and throw your PC as far as you can

That cannot be the issue. I did not have USB debugging enabled but I was still able to transfer the files. But, you can try re-installing the Google USB Driver or Samsung Driver for I9250 or was it I515?
Cheers
Check on computer that device is showing in devices and has correct drivers installed. If not samsung official manuals and downloads website (google it) has a driver pack (approx 30mb) which when installed should have every samsung driver you could need, download and run then reboot computer and plug in phone, all drivers needed should now install correctly.
Also check in usb options when first connected that mtp is checked so storage is visible to computer. Best of luck and if all else fails pc out of window sounds like fun
P.S. try flashing latest gapps to fix gallery issue, after dalvik and cache wipe, may solve gallery issue...

One of my nexus 7s doesnt show up on pc?

So, i have a nexus 7 FHD, its rooted with slim rom and it works great. My sister just got a nexus 7, and i rooted it for her with a toolkit, and updated to the latest OTA. The problem is, her tablet is now showing up as a MTP device on my pc, while my nexus 7 is. I know its not the wire because ive tried both my wire and hers with my nexus, and they both have my tablet show up. Furthermore, i see it as a device under the device manager, and my pc makes a sound when it plugs in, but i still cant do anything.
Does anybody know what to do?
Fix the driver that pops up when her tablet is plugged in, don't let windows search for the drive install it manually. A quick search will point you to the correct one. Also best not to use toolkits, if you did this manually my guess is you would have installed all the proper drivers but that's besides the point

have you activated "Media device (MTP)"?
you can find it under (Settings → Storage → USB computer connection)
