Strange question - limiting data use using an app on the Nexus? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hello,
We are thinking about switching our users from BB to Android. On the BB they pretty much only use data for email as pretty much all other things like browsing on BB suck. We are worried they'll go over their data limit if they go to android. Is there a way to put something on their phone to make sure emails are priority and limit their browsing data usage?

Yes. I'm not 100% sure but there is a data mobile limit box you can tick in the data usage section. And i would venture to say there are some apps. I guess wait for somebody who has used it to detail it out for you as I have no experience using it.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

OK. It is easy. You just tick data mobile limit and use the limiter bar in the to slide the the limit. There is also a warning bar to specify when you get a warning. As an aside, you get a disclaimer saying Google and your carrier might calculate usage differently. In my experience the data usage has been within +- ~20mb. And usually it is within 10mb.

Many carriers offer usage controls that limits data consuption/talk time/messaging. I know Verizon offers it for $4.99 per month and the controls are only accessible by the primary user on the account. 3rd party apps like the ones in the market are too easily modified by the device user and could cause issues in a business environment given mass users. Look into usage controls with your carrier. You need a concrete solution... Good call moving away from the sunk ship known as RIM.

I would suggest using the data counters in your settibgs app. There you can provide your max usage and alarms for certain data milestones. This menu also provides information on wich app has been using the most. A great way for me to limit my data and save batery has been to put my phone in 2g only.

It's a new feature in ICS that can be found under Settings -> Data Usage.
It looks like this (random screenshot from Google Images):

Just be in for a shock. Android devices (or iPhones) will use much much more data than BlackBerrys. You can try and restrict it all you want but you'll never see BlackBerry-like data usage.

[ROOT] DroidWall v1.5.1 - Android Firewall (Useful for most of us)

Hi everyone,
I don't have an unlimited data plan. I always went to use WhatsApp Messenger . Howsoever, there are many application runs on the background spending traffic (also draining battery too fast). today I have found out there is an application free on the market call "DroidWall - Android Firewall". This application works as iptables front-end to block undesired applications from accessing the network.
You may alos restrict any program depending on the type of the connection. For example you set Gmail application only works when you use WIFI and will get block when you using 3G for example.
I thinks they are more people have the same problem I had. that's I am sharing it here.
ATTENTION: ROOT REQUIRED!!!
Front-end application for the iptables Linux firewall.
Allows you to restrict which apps can access the network.
This is the perfect solution if you don't have an unlimited data plan, or just wants to see your battery lasting longer.

Thanks for this.
Just curious.. In PC environments we use firewalls to control outbound and prevent rogue inbound..
I know this differs depending on carrier but with ATT our network is proxied anyway (meaning inbound will always fail) and as for outbound it would seem if there was an app on android you didn't want having net presence you'd just freeze or uninstall it.
Not criticizing the app.. Just hoping someone will give me some example uses where I could take advantage of it other than not having unlimited data as that makes perfect sense.
Thanks for your work!
Hello,
You may restrict any program depending on the type of the connection. For example you set gmail application only works when you use WIFI and will get block when you using 3G for example.

Settings for HTC WIFI Hotspot?
Hi, Great app.
Can anybody tell how to allow HTC WIFI Hotspot to connect internet?
It doesn't appear on droidwall's app list, but instead when I turn on "(root) - Applications running as root", I can access to internet from my laptop.
But I'm not sure this setting can allow ANY of root apps to access internet, which we may not want them to.
Please tell what's the best solution for that? Otherwise should I install other wifi hotspot app?
Anybody noticed any improvements in battery life after using this?
I use LBE Privacy Guard that features pop ups and privacy protection

hory chit
the battery life was probably terrible if it used this much :/
That's crazy! Have you mailed the developers? It must be images or something, text couldn't add up to that. Maybe leave it connected to your wifi and run wireshark or something (if you've got an adapter that will run promiscuous mode properly) - maybe you can see what it's doing...

Images? Forget about images, this has to be downloading high quality videos to get to 9GB.
I have some serious security concerns about what this app is doing. You should try to sniff the data and see how much its sending versus receiving. I'd be curious to know what IP addresses it is communicating with. Did you install it directly from the market?

Hi,
I am the dev of this app.
1. when you have such trouble, please contact me by email (hopefully somebody did).
2. check if it load images and images sizes. It doesn't load 'thumbnails' from the websites, but full images if thumbnails are not available ... so, if the website use big images of 2Mb ... it can goes quickly.
3. disable widget cache if it was enable
4. here is my widget with 3h refresh period and 8 feeds :
http://pureapps.planethoster.org/images/presentation/pne_data.png
5. if you use the internal viewer, all browsing you does in the viewer is counted ... video streaming, downloads...
@deekjx : For comments about 'security concerns', dump the UDP/TCP trafic if you want, there is nothing hidden. But, please, be careful before publishing such comments. Now, if the app doesn't come from the market, you can be right... few users reported Pure calendar hacked bersions containing viruses because they got it from a 'forum'.
Please, email me logcats just after a manual refresh to check what is wrong.
Same for me too
Switched to manual update worked fine. contacted dev through market

[Q] OS Service + others increasing my internet usage

Is there anyone who ever have the same problem with me? I look at my 3G Watchdog and realize that there is "OS Service + Others" which is using my internet usage frequently but i don't know what is that? I already uncheck active sync, background data, try using Droidwall when root (but I don't know which app that i have to block); but the "OS Service + Others keep using my internet quota. Thank you for your attention.
I am using Stock ROM XXLM6 and unrooted.

Man, what's the frown for......every day you are alive is a Happy Day
You using Flash Video, or any Cloud Player, like Amazon Mp3, or Google Play, or Drive.....
are you allowing those or any Cloud connected service use 3G mobile data, or restrict to WiFi??
This is from App FAQ:
http://www.3gwatchdog.fr/faqs/
Is usage by application accurate [Pro]
Is usage by application accurate [version pro, Android 2.2+]?
Usage information is provided by the Android system, and unfortunately is rather approximative. As a rule of thumb global usage (as displayed in the main screen) tends to be more accurate, so you should trust it more.
Starting from 3GWP 1.9.0, streaming media traffic (e.g. YouTube) may be reported under the name "Streaming media" rather than under the apps which actually use it. However the usage of some applications (e.g. TuneInRadio) is correctly reported under their own name.
Measured usage not assigned to any specific installed application is listed under the name "OS services + others".
The lack of separate counters for Mobile and Wifi usages obliges 3GW to "track" connectivity changes to distinguish the current type of usage. This creates a risk of overlooking usage occurring while the 3GW service is not running. The service is automatically started on boot and normally stays running in the background, unless killed (manually or automatically) by a task killer, or by the system in case of a severe shortage of resources . If this happens, the service will automatically be restarted within 15 mn, but traffic by app consumed during that time will not be counted. Note that the same problem will not affect global usage because Android provides a dedicated counter for global mobile usage, so even if the 3GW service is temporarily down, the internal Android counters are still tracking usage and the 3GW service is able to catch up without loss of data when restarted.
The sum of all usages is displayed at the top of the screen can only be compared with the global measured usage, not with the billable usage.
Finally, it has been reported that the Dell Streak and Acer Mini E310 don't implement correctly the Android functions used by 3GW, and usage reported stays at 0 for all apps.

[Q] Battery Drain. Media Server NO SD card, Android System

So im getting some battery drain here and this phone is just 4 days old. I know time doesnt matter but im just saying ive given the battery some time to get better with the charges. First day i had to charge it twice, same with second day. Third day i disabled the CDMA/LTE radio and i had to briefly charge it.
Now today its been up for about 13 hours and its at 20% with mid-heavy usage. I dont think the battery is bad but i think IT COULD DO BETTER for a 2100mAh battery. Today i accidentally (from 8 am to 4 pm) ran with the CDMA/LTE setting on then i changed it to CDMA ONLY but battery was pretty much slightly better... I live in Puerto Rico so we are getting the new LTE Vision antennas soon here (decem 16. CANT WAIT) throughout the whole island
Something is weird... the first two days i noticed the battery drain so i noticed the SD card media server corrupt file bug but heres the thing... i took out my SD card and the media server process is still there :/ Shouldnt it have stopped? There is no more SD card for there to be a corrupt file problem. Also why is the Android process so high up on the list? should be about 85% screen and 15% the rest...
Any ideas why or who could be the culprit? I apologize for not using BetterBatteryStats as i havent purchased it and dont really intend on spending time on it. I love my phone just fine and i would hate to have to root it and install CM10.1 because i dont want to deal with updating my device every week because im OCD about updates.
Suggestions?
PS: i also run google now and Maps for latitude because i like sharing with my friends my location. Is latitude responsible for the whole Maps app battery usage? Is there a way for me to reduce it without manually having to update my location? Like in longer automatic intervals. Would disabling "report from this device" and "location reporting" turn off the latitude location sharing ?

unfortunately not, both are located somewhere inside the /system folder
as for BetterBatteryStats, there should be a thread here with an XDA version which is free for members
lastly, the 12/16 LTE launch is only for the south of the island, or so they've advertised (I could use it in Hato Rey, I've only gotten 1x for the past month and a half)
I know but wishful thinking about the LTE. Heard it should be island wise by February.
So I guess rooting is the best way to get rid of these Battery problems but then even if I stay on the stock ROM I won't be able to upgrade OTA (not that it's been mentioned anyways)
I think I've done my best to reduce the battery drain minus turning off the maps thing

Battery discussion

On 4.4.4 I used to be able to get 5-5:30 ost but since updating it to lollipop and beyond I nearly get 4-4:30 I want to know if anybody els has been getting this issue or how to fix it and yes all the bells and whistles are turned off
Are you using freeza Beastmode kernel? Are you on the OG5 modem? These have been my most recent bumps in battery capacity; the biggest since KitKat actually.

Heavy usage today but ready to plugin and charge for tomorrow. The usage for apps shown is a bit higher than usual but the overall stats and SOT are darn good. Running OB7/OB7 bootloader/ customized with Xposed/OG5 modem and Beastmode kernel. Maybe the improved battery comes from the OG5 stuff.

Debloated ROM, freeze or delete apps that waste away at the battery, use auto brightness. Look for apps that wake excessively. Have you tried L Speed Mod? It will make Google Services behave. I use that with default settings, dump third party apps' cache and browser cache (including Google Play and Google Play Services) every 12 hours on a schedule and use an app by chain fire called recently to keep apps from running so much unneeded. Watch for rogue or faulty apps in the Xposed error log. Source close browser and other apps that like to keep running with back to kill app and use an ad blocker.
But really I think it has more to do with being indoors mostly on Wi-Fi and using Wi-Fi calling that gets those results. I have to credit the 5.1.1 kernel and modem too. OB7 wasn't always this good.
Half screen brightness would most likely to bright for me. What's wrong with auto brightness? It may save you some battery.
Sent from my SM-N910P using Tapatalk
I used to do a lot of that disable things I didn't need like s voice and bloat but for some reaons I didn't reason calls or text and I credit that to all the mods I did with the phone so I haven't really moded in a while but since then I get bad battery life, and no I used to use auto brightness but then afew days ago I realized whats the point of not enjoying your phone how you want to. But dam you sure do a lot, none of that has any negative impacts>?
Not really. I go with what works. Some users just aren't happy with some things and change this and that until more content with it.

i did everything you said , got recently and also l speed rom, put the freza kernel. but my question is how do you put a scheduler? and how do you find out which apps run in the back round? if you uninstall google apps and apps that are form Samsung would that effect in anyway the phone?
I use an older application I purchased a while on an older phone that needed more memory expansion for app data. Link2SD pro did that plus had the scheduler so I still use it for that rather than buying another task manager. Couldn't tell which to use or if there are better or free ones.
