[Q] Micro-USB port worn out, what should I do? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Well, less than 4 months into owning my Verizon GNex, the Micro-USB port has worn out, rendering it un-chargeable. I'm well out of warranty at this point I suppose so any suggestions as to what I should do?

solder it back to the board

Sorry for the dumb question, but have you tried other cables?

Yeah I have, you can definitely feel the cable barely staying in.

OK don't solder or weld or do anything else to it!!! send it to warranty threw verison or Samsung, if u do something stupid like solder or weld u will void warranty. Samsung turn round time is a week I've sent in two phones and they completely replaced with fresh new one ( screen issues)

Yeah, you're not out of warranty. Manufacturer warranty on the phone is one year (like pretty much every other OEM). Take it to the nearest Verizon store and they should help you out in replacing it under warranty.

Yea the warranty is a year as long as you haven't done anything like open it up just make sure its 100% stock and call Verizon and tell them. If your account isn't cash only they will send you a new one overnight. If it is cash only you have to go to a store and drop it off maybe 2 or three days later you'll be told to pick up your replacement at the same store. Super easy

You could also change it using the Pogo pins, touchstone mod etc.

Yeah I was about to do that since I had forgotten about manufacturer warranty. Well I guess I'll bring my phone back to stock 4.0.2 and call Verizon. Thanks guys!

The cheap answer to crappy cables

I see that the answer to a lot of problems is "get a new cable". If you want a good USB cable for your Epic 4G and don't want to pay the outrageous prices at Radio Shack or Best Buy, etc., then get your cable at http://monoprice.com. We're talking under $2 for gold-plated micro USB cables. I bought a handful and they've worked perfectly for me.
No, this is not spam, and I have no connection whatsoever to monoprice.com. Just a happy customer.

It's just an addendum to a common answer. Lots of questions are answered with, "Get a better cable." This is a way to get a better cable without getting ripped off for $20-$30.
If it belongs somewhere else, like accessories, a moderator can feel free to move it.
And there is already a thread, "Monoprice or nothing, " in that section.

I have been using my stock cable that came with my phone since day 1. I have odined atleast 100 times with no fails or soft bricks. I am beginning to believe that samsung fixed their crappy cable issue. I bought my phone last june, so earlier models might have defective cables.

How to check whether phone is used or new

I am on the lookout for a Galaxy Nexus in Mumbai, India. I want to make sure that I get my money's worth when buying the phone i.e I don't want to get ripped off by the seller.
Can you please tell me how I can know if a phone is new or used previously.
I already read but people in the comments have reported that they don't always work:

I know. That's why I posted this thread - to see if someone else would have a answer.
There's very little you can do to check if it's new or not other than call Samsung and see if someone has registered the unit with them for some reason or another. Although the seals on the box being broken would be a massive give away

I find it hard to believe you can undo the seal without damaging it, I had to proper rip mine to get into the box. Perhaps the EU ones are more secure!!
Either way, unless you're getting it from an official dealer it's hard to say whether it's 100% new or not

I'm on tapa talk so I can't see your sig, but I'm assuming that it says that you need to do a hardware hack.
People unless you see tmobile or t889 it's not going to work. The tmobile version of the note 2 is missing a little chip that allows wireless for some reason. Unless there is a software workaround that hasn't been pushed wireless is a no go.
So if I do the mod, I can just buy one of those $15 coil pads and it'll work for palm pre and Qi chargers or no?

Don't think so. From what I gather, T-Mobile version of note has contacts, but they don't do anything. Wonder if there's a way to go around that. Like solder a wire or something. but I doubt it.

Thanks, just noticed. Seems to be a simple 1 wire job. Problem is, my soldering skills leave a lot to be desired. Guess it's time to practice. Or ask someone who knows what they are doing.

You'll be fine, last time I hold a soldering iron is like 20 years ago, my hand a bit shaky now, and I did it just fine. Just be careful when prying the phone open, there are 2 clips behind the battery spot top and bottom.
hmm
I was tempted to do this. Worried about messing up tho.
I actually just bought an at&t gn2 specifically because of the wireless charging issues on the t889. I'll have to hack it a little, but my understanding is all frewquinciesnshould work just as well as on the T-Mobile gn2.

Sad day, cracked screen.

Well, sad day today. A golf ball landed on my galaxy s3's screen. Needless to say, golf ball > galaxy s3.
Called customer service to see how much it is to be replaced, and with my insurance, its a big 166$. Ridiculous.
EDIT:
My brother works at a Radio shack, and they'll fix it for like 100$.
Has anyone used Radio shack before to get a screen replacement? If so, how long did it take, and did they do a goob job?
feet taiserva
Purchase the replacement screen on eBay, watch a video on youtube on the screen replacement. It's easier than you think and wouldn't cost much at all. If your opposed to that I would trust them, it's not difficult.

The 100$ is what my brother said, after looking online it actually ends up to being 329$.
I'm thinking I'll let T-Mobile do it... I don't want to risk destroying it myself..
Kind of sucks though, a golf ball dropped and cracked it as bad as it did, it's at the bottom, like right on the home button, but the crack went to nearly the top of the screen.
Did you check eBay?? I would think they were way under $100 for the screen.

Well I checked Amazon, I have Amazon Prime for free for being a student.. and they are around $15-20.
I just don't want to take the chance that i make it worse than it already is... I'm not good at all at doing things like that, I'd rather it be done by someone who knows what they are doing.
Also, they said I could use a phone from the T-Mobile store until mine is replaced, which is pretty cool..
Understandable you don't want to make it worse than it already is. Try looking for places in your local area, there are repair shops that fix phones and video game systems for a fraction of the cost. Some times on Groupon they have Groupons for say $60 for a screen replacement, that's always another option you could check out.

Yea, I will look around.. But I do like that I can take it to T-Mobile, and they will loan me a phone while it's being fixed. I'll have to odin it back to stock though. Oh well.

Can't hurt to check around. Anytime!
Ontop of having Radio Shack doing it...it will void your warranty...to keep your warranty either have T-Mobile or Samsung fix it.

Well I called the insurance company this morning. They said $150, and that my replacement phone will be here tomorrow.
All is well, atleast it still works so I can use it until the new one comes tomorrow. Glad im getting a new one as well, instead of just getting this one fixed and sent back.
Thanks for feedback guys! :victory:
Well, as new as a refurbished phone can get. Any replacement/warranty phone that congress from tmobile is most likely going to be refurbished. I know because I have one and I'm very nit picky about my phone and always find some small defect with it.

Yeah, I have had that experience as well... Although more often than not, I end up with a busted camera which is more than a *minor* defect...
Asurion sometimes sends out BNIB devices but only if a) they don't have a refurb on hand or b) you've gone through a few refurbs in a short time.
I tried fixing my Nexus One's cracked screen...ROYALLY ****ed it up (just a little too much glue & ripped a ribbon) and ended up wasting $150 even after selling it for parts on eBay.
I would say if you are thinking about doing it yourself and don't have a lot of patience/manual dexterity/proper tools & work environment, don't try.
Also I figure the S3 is probably a lot harder to take apart than my old N1.

Not sure if they will. Maybe. I havent tried my cables, I did use the Orange brand, them suckers are hard to pull out
You can try to show them it's defective you may be better off contacting Samsung. I contacted them via text chat or call for my note 3 awhile ago over chargers. They ended up giving me a bunch for free due to me waiting so long ect. Just remember be nice patient and it will work out, if not hang up until you get a rep that is nice and will help you.
