Going case less. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Only thing holding me back is when I place the phone down on any hard surface and getting the lense scratch.
Help

I would advise to keep your case on, but if you are determined.. You could always use a wet apply screen protector on the lense, you will have to cut it which would be fun, and not sure how that would affect your pics. But I don't think you really have any other choice.

You are braver than I am, despite the fact that the back is more textured than my old droid charge, the nexus is just so thin I always feel like I'm going to drop it. If a case protects the phone from even one drop its worth the cosmetic negatives. I've seen videos on youtube of the nexus screen completely shattering from a 4 foot drop screen down onto concrete and becoming completely unusable (although it was completely fine when dropped on its back and on the corner)

Are you saying "lense" as in camera lens, or the screen glass? The camera lens has a slight lip around it to protect it, so it should be fine. For the screen... well, you can either use a screen protector as suggested or simply don't put the phone face-down.
I go with the Commuter because I am able to put it face-down without worry about scratching the screen (as well as for drop-insurance).

You could buy this screen protector, screen + camera lens.

I'm gonna be rocking my phone naked, except with the ultra oleophobic from sgp

Here's the video if you are interested. This why I will be getting a case and screen protector for the nexus. I don't want to take a chance.

I tried too. It just feels to skinny and fragile in my paws. I just need a little more bulk, prob go with a ultra capsule or ultra hybrid. Sucks cause the phone is beautiful ceaseless. Plus there's always the chance of me dropping while out and about

I'm super careful with my devices.
I've had the GNex caseless since day one...
And don't have even a miniscule scratch yet.
By careful though...I mean I plug the charger with the care of a WWII sniper.
And she doesn't sit on any surface that isn't wiped off and deemed soft/smooth enough.

Slipped from my hand. 3.3ft fall. Bounced first on the bottom left corner on a ceramic floor, glass absorbed the impact.
I wanted to die.
I hate my actual case (those $5 S cases from amazon), and I'm going to get a TPU Bumper from ebay because I miss using it naked.
But wouldn't risk going caseless.
I did it once with my new Nexus and guess what? Fell from my shirt pocket, landed on the screen, but luckily, nothing happened.
It almost seems they are suicide phones.

Who is running nekkid???

I just pulled off my clearfreak cause I messed up the install and I have 2 more coming from the ebay sale, but I've noticed that even the clearfreak takes a bit away from the "nakedness" . I mean damn this screen is sexy and responsive.
Just wondering if anyone is using their phone on a daily basis without a screen protector, gel skin, or neither. How do you like it? How is it holding up?
**Might give away those two Clearfreak SP** haven't decided yet, but let me know.
I bought mine on release day when the store opened and mine is naked as a jay-bird. My concern is being stupid and throwing it in my pocket with keys or something like that so I ordered the RealClear (or something like that) screen protector. I also think its a little hard to one-hand-hold because its fairly slick so I am going to look for a gel/rubber case soon.
I've been using my Vibrant for 2 weeks now without any sort of protection on it and I have to say that the phone is very durable. I dropped it a couple of times and returned with no scratches. I'm soon to get one of those Mesh cases though, just for the appeal .
Had a Realook but it made the capacitative buttons along the bottom less sensitive. I took it off and am debating on going back to a screen protector. If my screen gets scratched up that bad I will just call Tmobile customer service and tell them I need a new phone because my phone is sucking down batteries in less than 2 hours. Works every time!!!!
I was running naked for a while but then I got one of the gel skins form TMO. Been using it on and off. I love the phone naked but I feel like im living on the edge without a case to protect it.
I tried a wet install one from ebay but it had bubbles and felt tacky...I have a amzer I went to put on twice but cannot get every tiny strand from microfiber off screen...Iget stuck with a few stubborn ones...So I been naked for a few weeks now and 0 scratches but i'm very anal and wash my hands dozens of times and handle it like it's an infant.

Dropped my first phone less than three feet on to a tile floor, on the third day I owned it. Screen looked fine (no cracks) but wouldn't work. Got a replacement, and still running naked. I just can't bring myself to cover this sexy bastard up.

Thanks for the replies! Yeah im loving the nekkid feeling. Im sure I'll decide when I get the other 2 sp's in. Definitely not gonna get rid of the gel skin. Not that its a bad thing, but it does make the phone twice as heavy and twice as thick. I'd just like to think that if I dropped the phone it would give some cushion to avoid a corner drop/crack screen.
I guess it comes down to:
Sexy ass phone thats, super light and has an extremely bright screen VS. protected investment... LOL
Had mine for a few weeks, i started out with the t-mobile gel skin and screen protector but instantly realized after putting it on that it was horrible and blurred the image and ruined the colors of the screen. I do like the gel skin though. It gives the phone slightly more thickness and heft, which i prefer, and i think it makes it more comfortable to use.
for the screen I started using just regular kitchen plastic wrap as a temporary measure, but i actually like it quite a bit. it is super thin and clear so the screen looks just as good as usual and is quite resistant to smearing from your fingers. You can drag your finger across the screen and hardly see anything at all. It also wraps around the sides of the phone and keeps little bits of crude from getting in between the chrome-ish bezel and screen. the biggest problem with it is that it just isn't very strong, which leads to replacing it every 2-3 days because of all the little nicks and scratches it picks up. you also need the gel skin in order to hold it on and and keep it from moving.
Android Streaking (Naked)
I ran my G1 Naked for the last year and a half using the "sleeve" that it came with without any issues, scratches, etc so I figured I'd do the same with the Vibrant.
I found a nice semi thick cloth sleeve case with a drawstring so it doesn't fall out when dropped and as a bonus it helps keep the screen clean of fingerprints, debris etc. I have dropped it onto tile from waist height 10 or so times and the case dampens the falls enough so far. I just hope I don't slip when it's not in the sleeve.
Streaking here since i bought it on friday it was released.
I've never had a condom for any of my phones. it's like covering up your Ferrari with a car bra. What's the point?
As we say in the car world, "She ain't a trailer queen, she's built for driving. Drive her."
Exactly!
I was running nekkiddd for a week.
Just bought the clearfreak and after 3 days with it I hate it!
Returning my phone to her original self.
This phone is staying as nude as a newborn.
Only device I have ever put in a case is my iPod touch, as that damn polished metal back scratches so easy and can drastically diminish resale value.
did anybody try the Carbon Fiber Protector Shield Full Body Skin on amazon
Mine has been case and screen protector free for a week now. I've also drunkenly dropped it on 3 or 4 occasions from ear / pocket height. There is no sign of drop not even a scratch. I've noticed the chrome ring around the screen is very durable (i think it might be metal?). And the phone is so light drops don't seem to effect is as much as big metal devices. The screen seems very tough and thick (much thicker than a nexus one screen).
So far im pretty impressed with the build quality considering the "cheap feel" in the hand. I guess we need to stop associating heft with quality.
My only real concern is breaking the volume rocker or power button. They seem extra cheaply made.
Realook. You cannot see its there. And I don't have any problems with the capacitives. Screen is as Vibrant as without it. It truly is invisible and un-feel-able.
right now I'm running nekkid. I wouldn't mind getting some type of case for it though, just in case of the accidental drop, or if my daughter throws it across the room like she did my MT3G (only received 1 small dent on the T-Mobile logo =) )
As for a screen protector, I would like to get one, just have been seeing mixed reviews on them.
i've had mine since launch and its still naked because the god damn USPS sucks a fat nut and wont just drop my THREE DOLLAR EBAY GELLI CASE off in the freaking mailbox because for some reason it ended up getting "signature required"
i pulled the lanyard off an old camera to be safe, i'm so paranoid im going to drop it.

it is soft plastic, no idea how you havent scratched yours. i have been extremely careful with my phone and noticed a small divot in the edge, i havent dropped it or put it anywhere that it could get scratched, no idea where it came from.
Happy to see most are not throwing money away on screen condoms, I have been naked since day one, screen is as new as when i first unboxed, This screen will not scratch PERIOD. For those you think that there is no differance between naked and using clear or ghost condoms, Just stop it, there is a differance, No matter how clear or ghost they claim your still putting a layer of material on the screen and it will effect the clearity, This screen is gorgeous and ment to be naked. BTW I have a TMO gel case incase i drop the phone and they are perfect together, Gives the phone that umph it was missing.

Dropped the phone today, no case, no screen protector!

Walking down the hall today carrying my laptop and phone, wasn't even thinking and phone slipped out and dropped on the ceramic tile floor.
It has no case and no screen protector.
It fell from slightly above waist high.
When I picked up the phone, the back plate had 2 notches that were partially unseated at the top of the phone. I re-seated them and inspected the phone closely. NO DAMAGE!!
Not a single scratch on the screen and no scratches on the body, whew!
Way to go Samsung!
Glad to hear there were no casualties today

Or just a case since most cases have front parts to prevent screen damage.
First phone I actually use a screen protector and case on.
I came from a LG G2x and a Blackberry (personal and work). Maybe I'm freaked out about not having a fall back anymore. But the phone is thin enough that a case doesn't add too much more.

Agreed, simply because cases provide a better grip to the phone especially for such a big phone.
I had a similar situation and dropped it in the bathroom floor from my pocket. 1 or 2 notches came off the back cover. Everything else is fine.
I dropped my Nexus S on the street and result 2 quite noticeable notches on the corners , I guess the surface was pretty hard and rough. At least I was lucky enough for the screen which is without a protector results fine.
Dropped every single phone I've ever had once or twice, my Desire is destroyed, I keep it as a spare, my Hero survived with minor wear marks, my SGS2 had one tiny scratch on the screen and a few marks around the edges of the phone, my month old Galaxy Nexus so far is spotless, touch wood.
I have a very very faint half inch long scratch near my earpiece. Thinking about getting a case. Probably not, I don't like them. I still need to get the spare battery.

I'm not rocking a case either and haven't really has a serious drop or anything yet (knock on wood) but one thing I have noticed is the gray material around edge and back (not the back rubber cover) is completely terrible. The slightest of dings takes chunks out of it. Why would they use such a cheap material that has no durability at all?
Also I've see several people taking keys to their display on YouTube. Are they aware that this screen isn't Gorilla Glass? I have some very faint hairline scratches on my screen that can't be seen unless looked at certain angles but it definitely isn't scratch resistant especially considering I haven't don't anything really that would cause the scratches. Still don't even know how they got there. Don't put phone in pocket with keys or usually anything and never lay face down.

True it does not have gorilla glass but it has sammys version of it. You wont get glass scratches from keys, you get that from dirt or sand making its way into your pocket and rubbing against the screen. As far as the plastic goes, that doesnt do so well when marked with keys
My heart would have stopped if that happened. I don't get cases because I feel I'm that much more secure with them, but most cases tend to give me a better grip- which I'd want anyways. I've not gotten a screen protector yet, as I haven't found one that I like. I want one that provides scratch resistant qualities, but isn't gummy like invisible shield.
Whilst staggering home on new year's eve I dropped mine onto the road, I have two little chips on one corner but other than that, no damage. (No case, no screen protector)
I was so disappointed with myself the next day but then I realised how incredibly lucky I was that it didn't suffer any more damage, especially the screen!
This may sound dumb but if you don't have a screen protector, avoid putting the phone face down. I believe that - along with picking up the phone carelessly whilst face down contributed to my extremely small scratch.
Sent from stall 3 in company bathroom.
I'll try to be as helpful as possible: Hot.
Their is no way I could feel safe sporting this phone without a screen protector, but I have noticed that after dropping it twice on concrete, there are no visible marks. There is however, a slight hairline scratch on the screen from the first 12 hours I had it before I installed the screen protector and also before it was dropped.

Call me a freak, but I don't care... I've had the phone for 2 weeks now and not taking off the standard screen cover that comes with it till my protector gets shipped.. should arrive in a couple of days... Also ordered a case...

Otterbox Commuter rant!!!

So I've had my Gnex for about 2 weeks now, was in a commuter case the whole time. Today, I drop it on the pavement, no sharp objects or rocks protruding out. It dropped from my hand, about waist level, and went forward about a metre or two. And guess what, the screen is completely cracked! cracks running from the bottom to the sides, to the top, a small chunk of screen missing right above the notification LED. Otterbox, I'm very very dissappointed!! Samsung too.. I dropped my desire z multiple times on pavement/concrete, no harm done. Unbelievable...
so let this be a warning to commuter users! anyone have similar experiences?
I have the same case and dropped my phone multiple times. My phone has survived every accidental drop with no scratches, cracks, etc......yet. The Commuter case is also in good condition with no blemishes on it other than the usual lint.
Ugh so I just had bad luck.. it was the very first time I dropped it too.

lol nah.. i would have seen. I went back to where I dropped it today... flat concrete, no protrusions/ pebbles. but judging from the screen cracks it looks like there was one area of impact, and a small chunk of screen is missing from there, and most of the cracks radiate from there outwards. really scratching my head here..
anyways, I bought a new screen.. if that one cracks I'm just going to be sad.
I use the same case and dropped my phone a few times hard and it was fine. I too am thinking it must have been some hard protruding debris the screen fell in to. One more reason for me to get a glass screen protector.

were any of your drops face down and onto pavement/concrete? i looked at a video where the guy did a 4-foot face-down drop with no screen onto a block of flat cement and the lcd didn't even work afterwards
My question is; did Otterbox ever claim that your phone would be invincible with the Commuter? If the company said that, there would be no more Otterboxes. In nearly any case, a fall could shatter the screen. It happened on my iPod touch, on my original Droid. It doesn't matter what case is on. Glass smacking the floor with result in a fall.

falls onto flat surface? facedown? I'm trying to get an idea of if this kind of thing would happen if it were dropped onto a flat suface, or because there was a small rock or something that actually impacted the screen. i'm leaning towards the protrusion idea
attached some pics. the missing chunk is just at the bottom of the screen protector. the chunk of glass below that originally looked fine, just two cracks on either side, but it's white now- guess it got loose over the weekend.
any forensic glass experts? opinions?
I returned my commuter case last week, thing is a lint collector/insanely bulky vs the reviews it has on Amazon.
Yes two of the drops were face down...one on solid concrete and the other on the hardwood floor. It seemed to be saved by the lip on the case which I admit is pretty thin compared to say my ballistic case.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
ahh so the commuter saved them then? I want to know that my case was caused by an errand pebble, not the commuter failing to protect the screen with the lip. I don't want to smash my new screen again. then I'll be the biggest idiot in town..

I had a very similar drop and result last week. I had mine in a diztronic case and an xo skin, and the screen shattered. I guess I should get a tougher case, but if the same thing happened with the commuter, and so many people use diztronic with no problem, it might have just been bad luck/physics. Like you, there didn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary about my drop.
Truthfully the commuter is advertised as a light duty case and the defender the heavy duty. You could upgrade to a ballistic or Agesis case, but neither case may help if the screen hits a rock. I'm going to be getting the glass screen protector for that reason.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
No case will protect the phone from a direct impact on the screen.
Even a small pebble on the ground that sticks up higher than the case's lip will crack it. Falls from less than 2 feet probably wont matter if you have a screen protecter or an otterbox defender, but a shoulder - height fall is probably the end of your device if the screen is directly impacted.
was this outside too?

Just how fragile is our GalNex?

For those of you that use your GalNex naked (haha no I mean you have clothes on and the phone is naked), you obviously set it down on surfaces of all sorts, wood, granite, plastic, erc.
So does the act of setting your phone down on various surfaces damage it at all, screen up or screen down? Is any of that Verizon/4G LTE/Samsung lettering on the back scratched or rubbed off at all? It doesn't look like any part of the camera would make contact with said surfaces.....?
Kind of a silly question, but I've been paranoid since the Droid Incredible camera-sticks-out thing.

i'm on my 3rd screen in a year. BUT!!!! i drop this freak'in phone all the time, and to me......it's worth the fix. best phone i've ever owned. i'm hoping samsung and google do another GNex. because LG isn't my cup of tea
Wouldn't a case be easier (and cheaper) than buying and replacing 3 screens? How much are they?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
My phone falls down all the time (yep, often on concrete) and doesn't have a single scratch. I'VE THE MAGIC UNBREAKABLE NEXUS! xD
The one thing that seems to have an effect on my GNex is sand...
I've put it in a pocket with some sand and by the time I got home the edges were a little scraped,
other then that, this thing is invincible!
Really strong IMO. This thing can endure a drop on tile 6ft in the air and not dent, crack, or scratch.
Should've seen my face. I was scared to pick up my phone and find cracks.
--------------------------------------------------
If I have helped you.... hit that sexy thanks button. ^_^
Its pretty strong actually. Since the body is made of plastic, it allows the phone to absorb way more shock than glass.
And about using a case; I think the Gnex is beautiful with its blank slate black front with a curve. And the edge of the glass is also slightly curved into the body, making the phone look like a well aged pebble. I took the case off my phone last week and smiled when i saw it sitting on the table.
Things generally look better naked...

Hahaha... yeah.
Mine took a hit on the glass, corner of my aluminum laptop, pretty hard too, should've seen *my* face.
But it made me think, what's the point of a case if it doesn't directly protect what we all want it to protect (the screen!)?
So again, I want to go naked, but I'm hesitant to set it down on anything but cloth.

Well, I personally think galaxy nexus can handle few drops, especially with screen protector on, but I personally had a bad luck with the phone. I dropped it and something broke internally, which made phone not recognize SIM card at all. So my lesson is, if you want your phone more protected, get a case, any case. Just one that'll protect from the fall
Swyped on my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP with Franco Kernel
Dropped it a few times, the most recent one was from knee length, hit rough concrete and came out with 2 battle scars.
Will the next nexus have a longer screen?
I always prefer a naked one, but I dropped it a couple of times... And the last one on a tile resulted in a chip off the glossier surface..
And then I got a SGP case after that
I've been going naked recently and I finally dropped it once on carpet from a desk. It survived that without any damage. I would say it's pretty durable since I bring it out of my pocket many times so the rubbing from my jeans hasn't done anything negative to my shell.

If it didnt survive a carpet drop, it would probably crack in the pockets of a fat person.

How do you plan to keep your 5x pristine?

Just wondering if you guys have any sure fire methods you plan to use to keep your shiny new 5x's in good shape. I always have issues with my speaker ports getting clogged with crap. Share any tips on cases, screen protectors, or cleaning methods you use to keep your phone looking flossy!

I plan to keep my 5x in an elevated and sealed enclosed glass case on my desk and never touch it. It will always look perfect and I can admire it throughout the day!
I usually vaccuum seal mine in my foodsaver...touchscreen works great thru the film. I put it in bubble wrap when out and about..
Oh and always.. ALWAYS latex gloves are worn when operating
I don't do anything special. I use it naked. My 2013 Nexus 5 has two cracks in the frame (one near headphone jack and one near volume button) probably from the one or two times I dropped it. I didn't even know it was cracked until this week when I was examining it. The display has no scratches on it. I try to be as careful as I can but I refuse to use a case or screen protector. The 2013 nexus frame has to be very, very weak.
I always run my phone naked and my Nexus 5 literally has no wear. I plan to run naked again with the N5x since it seems to be the same material.
The display is impressively pristine and it's definitely been in my pocket with keys a lot. The plastic doesn't really have any wear either.
I have no clue why people (and especially tech reviewers) love metal or glass phone-backs. They're heavier and prone to wear/breaking/denting. I much prefer this matte-plastic backing LG makes, it feels good in the hand, has 0 maintenance, and it's quite durable.
I will drop it in the toilet bowl with some bleach and scrub it with the toilet brush

Keys won't scratch the panel. Metal is softer than glass. Just don't get any sand grains in your pocket. Or if you drop it on a sidewalk or the ground, very carefully blow the dirt off it, don't wipe it off and grind the sand grains into the glass in the process.
nothing special, i bought the cover with it, so that is more than enough.
used my nexus 5 in the case most of the time and its in very good condition.
I'll put mine in a case and the first thing I'll put on it is a tempered glass protector. The case is mainly because I got the mint colour my wife'll like when I hand her the phone after getting bored with it, whereas its a bit 'bold' for me!
I plan on selling it for hopefully a "5P"next year so Cruzerlite TPU cases and tempered glass screen protector(s).
Naked when at home. ?

"Nearly naked".
My N5 has a Slickwraps skin (black leather) and a PET screen protector. When out and about, I carry it on my belt in a leather pouch case (PDAir). After nearly two years, no damage, no scratches or cracks.
I tried a tempered glass screen protector for awhile (Seidio Vitreo), but it cracked for no particular reason after a few weeks and I went back to PET film.
I plan on wrapping mine with shrink wrap then putting it in a bullet proof case, then putting that bullet proof case into a safe and then putting that safe into another safe and then not allow anyone to even look at the safe much less touch it.
In seriousness I I plan on going naked with mine.. Maybe a tempered glass protector but that will only last until it cracks and I pull it off, then it will be totally naked.

I bought a case and I always use a case of the phone, but nothing too extravagant. I just use a very slim soft case on it and that always absorbs any drops if I have any or issues. I also put tempered glass on my screen and will not ever live without it. I'd rather crack that, which I actually have a couple times, then the actual screen itself. You can't even tell anything is there because the tempered glass is so thin and perfectly clear.

Naked with nexus protect.
Spigen Ultra Hybrid clear case + Spigen tempered glass screen protector
I use a Diztronic case when I am in DC, but in Tucson (where all the real hazards are) most phones get too hot in a case, or left in a car. My S5 screen warped and split free after one long day in a Diztronic case in direct sunlight.
I thought about just keeping it in the supcase unicorn beetle case but after 4 months, it finally seems a little bulky. No scratches or dents whatsoever so it worked so far I guess. I always like spigen cases so I'm going to try the slim fit out for a bit with the spigen glass on it. I'll probably be back to the supcase in a week
