[Q] Bricked My Phone, Anyone have some advice.. ? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

So i bricked my phone. I know that it can not be fixed anymore but luckily i have insurance. I'm going to a sprint repair shop to get my phone replaced but what exactly should i tell them what happened ? If i tell them i was running a custom rom i know most likely they will not replace it.

Tell them you got an OTA update and when it rebooted it would no longer power on or it started getting really hot so you turned it off and then it would no longer go on.
---------- Post added at 06:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:55 PM ----------
Do NOT tell them you rooted or flashed custom roms or they will laugh and kick you out of the store.

I've seen a post saying that Sprint and Insurance company are the separate entities. So, if the phone is covered by insurance, it doesn't matter how you break the phone.
If I were you, I would call Sprint instead of visiting Sprint to claim the new phone covered by insurance. You can just say whatever you want, something like it's not turned on suddenly. If you phone is really bricked then there would be no way to check your phone from Sprint side....
Good Luck!
Another thought! - the easiest way would be - just throwing away or break your phone. That's it. Just report them you lost your phone!

USB broken please help unroot.

I have Uevolved rom on my phone and the usb wont charge and wont connect to computer. I took it to sprint and they ordered new phone and I cant get the phone to update the PC36IMG. I did the unrevoked forever and it shows Supersonic ship S-on. But when I put the pc36img on the root of my sd and restart in bootloader it acts like it found the pc36img fil and does nothing. I think I updated the pc36img earlier so now im stuck.

Ive been researching this for hours and it looks like I have to root phone again and then the unrevoked and the pc36img thing. The problem is, how can i root when i cant connect to my computer? Im screwed. PLEASE help if anyone knows a wasy around this. Thank you
Look if u you have TEP call the phone in stolen or lost. Sell it for 150 as a blacklisted evo 4g and use 100 to pay the deductable. That's what I did when my screen broke. Sprint did not want to fix the screen plus the other issues I had with the phone. So I reported it stolen and sold it for 150. Made 50 and got a evo brand new in the box the next day!!!!

In the kingrunny ROM by evokings platy_puss got a fix for usb to pc. Try this man hope this works for you.
Honestly, If its your USB that is broke, I highly doubt they will even look at anything especially since they already seen the phone and ordered you a new one. Rooting wont break your usb port. Plus like I said they already looked at it and deemed it broken. You really should be in the clear man. If they were gonna notice it they would have already.

His USB is physically broke.
Have you tried removing your microSD card, loading up the proper files on a PC, & putting it back in and unroot? You may have to buy microSD to SD and a SD to USB adapter to plug it into your PC.
Oo well in that case your good if you got a new one you shouldn't stress man, you'll have a spare EVO LOL ill give you $100 for it Haha
Thanks for the responses. Ill take mine in and see what happens.
Been into Sprint a few times lately...they told my buddy they wouldn't look at his Evo if it was modded, but as soon as one of the other techs asked what rom he was running, CM7, and the tech said yeah Im running that and its stable, the guy was like ok, Ill look at it but I have to put it back to stock. In short, get someone working there to mention they are running the same rom and I really think youll be in the clear.
I sent mine into CPR (Cell Phone Repair) not sure what your paying for replacement....but they did it for like 50 bucks...and had my phone next day..same root and rom and all. Where do ya live?
saves you the hassle of re-rooting and all that stuff reflashing rom....just pick up where you left off
If you want to unroot love, I advise you to get a laptop and find a cheap sdcard adapter somewhere. It could be from a camera or something.
Put the files on the sdcard using the adapter and then put it back in your phone, unroot and have a happy day lol.
Edit:: Noticed someone already mentioned this but anywho, hope you fix your issue

Got a link for this...curious...also searched, no dice for me.
thx.
that's a bummer! u should hope that your screen doesn't get "accidentally" cracked or something... if u got tep, the cost is at most $35 (sometimes free) and generally same or next day swap out for an evo refurb... and with a cracked screen, *there is no check for s-on*. just make sure that it doesn't INTENTIONALLY get a cracked screen. that would be like lying and stealing at the same time.
Hmm i had TEP my screen was broken. They said it was over a inch ect and sent me to asurion. Which made me sell the phone for 150 with a cracked screen then call it in stolen . Got them to ship it out n had it in less than 12 hours.

[Q] Unroot phone before making insurance claim?

This has probably been addressed hundreds of times...and I haven't read the insurance policy yet since this happened...so forgive me.
Wife broke the glass on her Epic today, she says it still works so I suppose its cracked or something (haven't seen it myself yet). anyway, guess this is where we make back the 7 bucks a month we've been paying the last year for insurance.
Question is...doesn't matter if i bring it in rooted and rommed really, does it? I'm assuming that shouldn't have any effect on the insurance claim. Or should I just wipe it anyway?
Or...if its just the cracked glass should I have it repaired?
Opinions? Experience with this scenario? Thanks peoples.

Asurion does not have the time, nor bearing, to deny an insurance claim based off of your modified software.
The first step in refurbishment is reflashing stock firmware, then hardware QA. Most of the time they aren't even powered on prior to reflashing. The techs are paid by how quickly they get phones out of the warehouse, in mass. They don't care what you did with the phone, as long as they can fix it quickly.
are u gonna deal with a sprint repair center or asurion themselves?
I've taken mine in with root and a rom installed. They couldn't care less Just make sure you backup your stuff though because they will possibly reflash your phone to stock. I learned that the hard way.

Make a backup from CWM, flash with odin from the unbricking thread, take your SD out, take the phone in.
I have heard (I know, heard....) of people being refused because rooting does void warranty.

Not for insurance claims. Insurance covers being stupid with phones like dropping in toilet or bricking while flashing.
Also according to the Sprint tech manual, they cannot refuse a repair because of it but it is frowned upon.

So, took it in this weekend to Sprint repair center. I just made a backup and then odined to bone stock. Not like its hard, and I didn't want any issues.
Upshot is, they won't repair it, say its an insurance claim since its basically a physically broken piece. After pushing them a bit harder, the guy said they could repair it if they got a screen in, which he basically assured us they would in the next few days. However, for repairing it, they will basically make us spend 100.00 on accessories or whatever at the store. Since the insurance deductible is 100.00.
Now, i'm not going to complain, since I'd rather get something for my 100.00, other than a refurbished phone. But that seems kind of crazy anyway. Is he just trying to boost his stores bottom line? Why do I need to spend 100.00 there for them to fix it, if they can just fix it? I guys that's the price of the "favor"? I would have to spend 100.00 anyway, so why not make it "win-win"?
wtf?

Root, then unroot, then root? Is this OK?

Story in bullet point format:
-got a new phone through insurance
-rooted using revolution.io method
-put on amon-ra recovery
-put on synergy rom
-screen shattered after dropping and I want to get it replaced/fixed through sprint service center
Do I need to unroot it?
Can I just flash a stock rom on there? (Can anyone point me to one that would work?)
And if I do need to unroot it, can I root it back? My friend was telling me that a certain method of unrooting disabled your phone from ever being rootable again? shrug.
Thanks!!

you can always replace the screen yourself, there's several guides online and videos on you tube and its cheaper than paying 100$ deductible for another refurbished evo from asurion Sprint isn't repairing screens anymore unless u get really lucky and most cell repair centers will charge you 50 - 100$ to replace the screen, when you can order a kit on line for 10 - 20$ and replace it yourself in less than an hour.
I tried with my old phone and the screen replaced fine. However, the sensor stopped working (it wouldn't register touch).

If you try again just be extra careful with the cables and make sure the kit you get has a digitizer(the thing that makes touch work) I've seen some of the cheaper repair kits on eBay not include the digitizer. just take your time and follow the directions carefully read em, read em again read em one more time watch a video or 2 and then keep the directions infringe of you while doing the repair and double.check your work at every step.

Yes, I just got back a refurbished M8. They give you 3 options:
1) For $30 and a credit card hold of $600, they send you the refurbished one overnight and you have 10 days to send your cracked one in. If there's any other items wrong or you messed up your warranty they auto deduct your card. i went with this option as it was previously my wife's and i wanted a clean start.
2) send your phone in and wait about 10 days for them to fix yours. no costs.
3) i think the other option was expediting the shipping on the repair of your own phone. that was like $25
The phone I got back looks absolutely brand new and no issues so far.

Also, HTC was awesome customer service wise. An actual person answered the phone right away, joked about the cracked screen, and had the replacement phone on its way in under 5 mins. Def not what i'm used to with corporations.
Thanks guys, thats exactly the info i needed, my dad broke his phone so we needed to know the process, im happy to hear the customer service is great!

How to remove root detection?

I need to send my phone in to Samsung for repair. I sent it in last week and though I haven't been rooted in about 6 months and I've been running completely stock they detected I voided the warranty by rooting.
I've convinced them to request a status change so that I can get it repaired but just in case I'm wondering if anyone knows how to make it so it's not detectable?
Is it that the knox counter was tripped? I would love to send it back the second time and have them second guess themselves by it not showing as previously rooted. That way there is no issue at all.
Thanks for the help.

They detect it by checking if the knox has been tripped. 0x1. I remember seeing somewhere where you can revert the knox and make it seem like it was never rooted but i forgot.

I'm pretty sure once you trip Knox it can't be reset. Not by John Public anyway. Any kind of accidental coverage on it? If not add it on through your carrier and wait 30 days. There's been so many people on here having phone problems getting caught up in some bs that wouldn't be if they just add an accidental damage plan. It's like $9.00 a month and they don't care if you're rooted or not.
JMHO of course..

I dropped my protection years ago because after spending $9/mos for a year = $108 plus the $200 deductible I can just buy a used phone on Swappa and be done with it.
My Note 4 is in pristine condition so I'd like to salvage it if I can. Thanks for your input.
If it's in pristine condition why are you sending it to Samsung? Just asking..

That's the exact solution I offered to Samsung. The reversal of the "out of warrant" decision is still pending. Thanks.
There is a way but you probably won't be able to do it if your phone isn't running. If you download the stock Rom from SamMobile is will put all the counters back to normal except the knox counter. Before you Odin in the tar you can run an app called triangle away by chainfire. It has worked on my Note 4 but it is hit and miss. Knowing that this app works means there is a way to do it. Maybe if you buddy up with chainfire he will teach you how his app works. He is a wizard. I believe he has another app that does similar called flashfire that is not available through play if you live in the United States. I downloaded it elsewhere and was able to purchase the full version though play that way. The best way to get help for such things is to install a version of play made for a free country such as the Netherlands and then set up a vpn from the same so when you talk to other developers it appears you are not in the United States where there is a lot of restrictions and a lot of people to enforce them.
Another way around your warranty issue is to contact Samsung and let them know your security has been violated and you need it fixed. I did something similar and they really wanted me to send my device in. I told them I had voided my warranty by rooting and they assured me it would not be an issue.

Of course this is just my humble opinion, but this is what having insurance is about. Just like any other insurance.. Home auto health.. You pay for it and it seems pointless until you need it, then it does what it is intended for. To have a $700,00+phone that we carry around with us at all times without some type of accidental coverage is asking for trouble.

As I said it's hit and miss. Read through what Chainfire has to say about the different ways to make it work in play. It mostly fools your device in to thinking it is custom so you can receive updates. As with almost all of his risqué apps it hasn't been tested on the Note 4. I've had it work in my note 4 and I've had it do nothing. It was working before the 5.1+ updates when Chainfire was still making root for locked boot loaders by replacing the bootloader with the stock bootloader. Now I'm not sure. Chainfire is a genius. It is almost scary the things he accomplishes. If you want to see some sick ****e do what I said and make your phone think it's in the Netherlands. From there you access the developers actual accounts from Google + etc... Instead of mobile Odin it is Flashfire. I don't pretend to understand all that it does but it goes to the core of your phone and gets everything. The stuff is accessible just hard to find. I think this guy can probably fix his phone with out sending it in. I thought my phone was toast but I just had to wait for the 5.1.1 update. As Chainfire explained in his Flashfire app you can not step backwards with a bootloader. The device will only accept an newer version.
Depending on where you live the insurance is becoming a rip off. You can replace a Note 4 for less than the $200 deductible now that the S6 and Note 5 have been released. If he stopped paying in January he has all ready saved almost $120 and for the other $200 the deductible would be he is ahead.

I could be wrong on the Knox counter being reset depending on what it is. I thought it was that screen that pops up when you start your phone or between the boot loader and the rom. If you mean by Knox counter what is sent to Samsung via the security log agent then of course it can't be reset. Well anything is theoretically possible but hacking in to Samsung would not be an easy thing.
From my understanding, the Knox counter is an e-fuse, meaning it is impossible to reset unless you change out some hardware. There may be a way to make the screen display it is not tripped (haven't heard of one yet) but even then it would be easy for Samsung to tell it was tripped.
I've heard of people saying Samsung still repaired phones with the Knox counter tripped, but your mileage may vary
Well, after a month of back and forth with Samsung my phone will be home on Monday repaired. They charged me $129 to repair it but they REPLACED LCD - REPLACED COSMETIC - REPLACED BGA COMPONENT - REPLACED PBA.
It's basically a brand new phone now with a 90 day warranty on the repair. Can't wait to get it back.
Plus I'm eligible for an upgrade next month but I really don't like anything out there better than my Note 4 so for now, I'll sit tight and wait to see what comes out.

Insurance
Any time you activate a new phone on the line, they ask if you want to put insurance on it (at least they have for me). If you need to use the insurance at any point, activate an old phone and then reactivate the phone you need insured and opt for the insurance. You just play along with them as they're doing it over the phone. It's worked for me. Got my bricked phone activated and insured over the phone and took it into sprint to get it replaced with a refurbished the next day. There's an ethical line there, but in my case I was convinced my phone issue had nothing to do with rooting it, yet they refused to help me because it was rooted, I didn't feel bad about it. I did opt to pay for the insurance for the next few months as well though, just to appease my conscience.

I did think about it but in the end, as a Christian I answer to something higher than my own conscience, to God Himself. Please don't think I'm judging or condemning you in any way. I completely understand and in the past have done things similar. I'm certainly no better than you so please don't think I'm saying that either. For me, to live is Christ. My testimony of how He has changed me is more important than anything I could ever do or have on this earth.
Thanks everyone for the input. Final outcome, 1 month of aggravation and not having my phone, $129 out of pocket and a completely rebuilt (Knox not tripped) new phone. I'm a very happy camper. Thanks all
