Just ordered a Gnex! - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Just ordered a Gnex from wirefly for Verizon.. really excited!
Quick question, how is the glass quality on the phone? I had a screen protector on my original droid but eventually took it off. Used the phone for over 2 years and it doesn't have a single scratch, ding, or nick anywhere on the glass. Safe to say that the glass on my old original droid was strong enough to make the screen protector I bought completely useless.
Aside from that, is there anything with the phone worth mentioning that I should know about that I may have missed? Spent the last few hours reading nearly every recent thread in each of the Gnex forum sections here but didn't go that far back..

The screen is similar/the same as Gorilla Glass. But I still wouldn't trust it without a screen protector. A small grain of sand is enough to give it a nasty mark and regret putting a screen protector on.
CDMA/LTE drains battery? Can't think of much else to say......put a custom ROM/kernel to maximize battery life.

The glass is great!
Its withstood drops scratch free, passed my personal knife scrape test, fallen from my pocket (~6ft drop while climbing fence)....all without a case.

A $5 screen protector goes a long way and gives a great piece of mind.
I cannot believe people actually use their phones naked.

Welcome to the family!

Just ordered an XO skin SP for my gnex and my dad's htc inspire (he just scratched his old SP pretty bad and needs a change). also ordered a moto rapid car charger and two cases for my gnex... got the diztronic matte revision 3 case and cimo gloss clear tpu case. looks like the cimo case has a bumpy texture to it but i was hoping to mod it and put a picture behind there and see if i can manage some kind of "custom" case but we'll see how it turns out. the bumpy texture may distort the picture and it might look terrible though. if so, ill probably use the diztronic case.
by the way, i ordered from wirefly and had them keep my existing unlimited data plan (previously used on my original droid). will i have any issues with my data since i'm moving to 4g? the operator wasn't very helpful in terms of telling me how things work. never used a 4g device

hate screen protectors, using the phone since Nov without one. No a mark on the glass. I use a microfibre sleeve form fitbag though when the phone in my pocket.
I don't think any glass is safe if you put it into a jeans pocket etc. Sand, salt, tony grit. all risky. A sleeve will protect yuo from this in your pocket.

was originally planning on keeping my phone naked (having previously using otter boxes on both my old phone and getting one for my dad and recommending one to my gf) but decided to go ahead and try slim TPU case + SP. I saw a quick youtube video review of the diztronic case with their SP and their SP had really bad smudging/fingerprints which made me try the XO skin. was going to get a zagg invisible shield for my dad but just figured i'd order 2 XO skins and try that out instead.
anyway, any info on the 4g concern from my previous post?

I always wear my smartphones naked, people underestimate the build quality of these things.
Heck, im even in the construction bussiness and my phones get quite a wear and tear, but to this day i havent gotten a single scratch on my displays.

FYI to others.. I feel the Gnex's screen is weaker compared to my Optimus 2X I had before this. I've had the phone 2 weeks (no change in use between phones) and there's 2 medium scratches on the screen already. Bought a zagg screen protector and it seems ok.. I don't think I applied it very well though so might pick up another (brand).
Note: Had the Optimus 2X naked since about Nov - which is currently in better condition than my Gnex.

So I just realized VZW 4g phones need sim cards. My previous phone was an original droid so I don't have one. Since I ordered from wirefly, do they include the sim card or do I have to get it from VZW? What is the process like to get one?
I suppose this also ties into my previous question which wasn't answered.. I had wirefly keep my original data plan (unlimited). Will that transfer okay and work with vzw 4g lte? My phone is arriving in a day and a half or so just want to be prepared so i can get up and running asap!

anyone have any info on my last post? heading to bed now gnex will be here soon and want to get started as soon as I open the box!

If you spend as much money as we spend on these devices you should expect them to hold their own. So buying a cover/protection...etc is kinda redundant because maybe you shouldn't have bought the device in the first place.

Completely agree. Ghost Armor is my choice. Considering I've spent a small fortune on cases/screen protectors and decided on Carbon Fiber Ghost Armor full body kit & Screen protector. I went with a Casemate Tough for my case & sold all my other cases.

Do I really need a Screen Protector for Captivate?

Hi,
Is the Capacitative screen of this phone is scratch resistant like iPhone? I was able to use my iPhone for 2years without getting a scratch on screen. I am awaiting my phone in mail, was thinking of buying accesories...
Thank you
I won't be getting a protector for mine. As long as you are careful, you'll be fine.
Even people with ocd make mistakes. Get the case from att and a screen protector. Protect your investment. Trust me.

Very true. And that whole scratch protector is kinda a lie. You can see pics/vids where the iPhone screen is pretty scratched.
No offense to anyone posting on this topic but I do not understand the purchase of accessories from AT&T or any other provider store. Items for these phones can be purchased significantly cheaper from online.
I bought a box of cut-to-size screen protectors for $5 from amazon and it has lasted our family through several phones and replacements. Touch screen function is not hindered and clarity is perfectly fine.
Though I use screen protectors, I do not believe in phone cases. I feel a phone is built to fit the users hand and cases add unwanted bulk that I don't like. Accidents do happen but in most situations you will cause no more than cosmetic damage. Use some sense when handling your phone and it should last until your next.
I remember recently having a "discussion" with my wife as to why she paid more to get a white iphone and then put a case on it. This baffled me to the point of agitation and I had to drop the conversation.
If really concerned, just get insurance through your provider or home insurance company. At least until the phone price drops after the next big release.
Thanks
Thanks for the replies, will be getting a case any way, still thinking of screen protector...

QFT on all that. I bought like 6 from Ebay China for like $1 and they work better than Apple's $10 ones.

That's a calculated risk.
Is spending $5/mo with a $50 deductible worth it versus spending $30 for a case???
You obviously have not used any good cases. Not all cases are like Otterbox and add half a pound to the weight and an inch to the thickness... SwitchEasy was my favorite when I had my iPhone. Waiting for something similar on the Captivate now.
I'm debating this as well.
I got the body glove case from att and a pack of screen protectors. The att rep put it on for me bubble free. I keep the case on when i am out and take it off at my desk at work. The phone is beautiful. The screen protector is more finger friendly and shows no smudges.
Definitely get a screen protector. Accidents happen, no matter how careful you are. And I would suggest a body glove of some type, again, accidents happen.
What brand of screen protector do you guys recommend?

aaaaaaaaahhhhhaha white iphone with a case. i lol'd. women eh?
with ur statement on bulk, get one with a minimalistic design. a case not only protect ur phone but look sexy too. if you scratch a case you can replace it hangin on to that sex appeal. scratch a phone and ur sol. Also good condition is important for resale
oh but if ur really against cases just get one like leather case that you only keep it in while ur not using it
Case:
I understand both sides. I guess "accidentally" putting my phones through more punishment than I thought they would endure has given me excess confidence in their physical design. I am a fan of the "phone pocket" now in most jeans and cargo pants. It is comfortable and easy to grab (also stays low to the ground). I would like to take some advice and get a nice case but I guess my wife's iPhone cases have already left me disapproving and I hate to add bulk, but maybe I'll try again. I'll admit the Captivate is a bit "smooth."
Screen Protector:
There is not to much to argue about here. I wouldn't worry about brand.
1. Does it stick to the screen?
2. Is it clear?
3. Does it fit?
If you answer YES to all three of these then it is a good screen protector.
If you answer NO to any one of these questions, KEEP SHOPPING.
I'll take a look later to see what brand the box is I have at home so I can post it.
Slim but durable cases are possible. Just very few companies put forth the effort to engineer one.
Switch Easy, they only make for iProducts but when I had my 3GS it was great. A thin rubber around the outside (protect it from shocks and also keeps the case itself from scratching it), then you snap a horizontal then a vertical case that form into one hard case... It was very thin (nothing like the bulk of an Otterbox), yet I think you could have thrown it across the room and the phone been fine.
I recommend the invisibleShield by Zagg. Had one on my iphone and totaled out a work van by flipping it with the phone sitting on the dash. Was one single mark on the iphone screen and it came off when I put a new Shield on it. I was impressed. It feels a bit rubbery for a screen protector at first but never noticed any impedance with touch sensitivity. Costs a bit more then normal protectors as well but again well worth it if you ask me.
Just got home and looked at the protectors I have. The brand is WRITERIGHT (universal screen protectors)
A set of 10 was dirt cheap ($3) and I have been using them for about 2 years. They are cut-to-fit and will cover the entire face of the captivate.

hello all. first post on here. just got my captivate last saturday and still waiting for martin fields to make a screen protector for this phone. they are a lil pricey, but totally worth it.
Well when I picked up my Captivate, I picked up the Body Glove Silicone Case from ATT because I prefer to keep any new devices in a silicone/gel style case for some protection. My sister and mom picked up the Captivate after they played with mine on Sunday *7-19-2010* and called me last night to set up my mom's phone and install a screen protector *3x for $ 9.99 at the corporate att store in my area*, for installing the sp and transfering the contacts *manually* and setting up gmail, I got a SP for free for my captivate for 15 minuets worth of work. Not too bad and I am a little more less worried then the last 2 days..

Wow, 16 replies and not one answer to the original question about the Glass.
Many devices like Microsoft Zunes have a special hardened Glass, you can use keys, knives, razor blades etc to it and not scratch them. If a screen protector makes you warm and fuzzy go for it, but if this device (I don't yet know what Glass it has) has "that" Glass then its a waste of money. It's going to take a hell of a hit to break it, and a sceen protector wont prevent that.
You can read about such glass here:
http://www.anythingbutipod.com/archives/2009/04/glass-screen-durability-test-a-lesson-on-the-mohs-hardness-scale.php
I ran a screen protector on my HTC Hermes for years, and hated it. Finally removed it last year and love it. And no scratches. (Case has flip cover for when its in your pocket) A lot more depends on how you treat it. I have 4 sons, 2 of them seem to destroy electronics, 2 of them don't.

[Q] Galaxy Nexus without case or screen protector

Is anyone using their Galaxy Nexus without any cases or screen protectors? I've found with my last couple of phones that even without any cases or screen protectors, just using the phone and putting it in my pocket while not in use, they still don't have any scratches on them after all this time. So I feel like these things are mostly unnecessary for how I use my phones, but this review has me concerned: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cF5l4J6LUps
Is anyone else using the Galaxy Nexus without a case or screen protector and finding scratches already, on the screen or elsewhere?
I had mine for more than a week now, used it without a screen protector and there is not even a tiniest scratch on the screen. I'm still getting one, just in case.
Still waiting to get mine from Handtec. No screen protector for me, but I did order a cheap tpu case from ebay.

I think cases ruin the phone to be honest (although without one you could ruin the phone I guess if you drop it ).
I never used one for my Hero and that doesn't have any scratches after 2 1/2 years. Not going to get one for my Galaxy Nexus either. I like smartphones in their pure unadulterated form
I went to a Verizon store yesterday and picked up a 3-pack of screen protectors. They're actually pretty good! Kinda funny they sell Nexus accessories, just not the Nexus..lol
I did what I usually do...just apply some lefter invisible shield strips on the sides and back (NO screen...that stuff is horrible for the resolution).
Basically I have a bag of scraps from previous gadgets. I just cut and apply. It's great on the sides because it gives the phone a "grippy" feel so it doesn't fly out of your hands.
I also put a piece on the back to make it even grippier when holding. It's still drying, hence the reason it looks the way is does.

I dont like case nor screen protector either, and I have no problem with my current Nexus S.
But, I hate dust ... The phone will collect a lot of dust inside pocket. Thats why I still use soft neoprene pouch.
I've spent enough on previous cases to buy a Galaxy Nexus... This time, I think I'm gonna fly nude here. I'm always super careful with my bleeding edge electronic gadgets... I know what they're worth, I buy em lol.

The phone comes right to the end of the pouch but doesn't stick out. I also too the chrome thing off the string that goes around it and just tied it on a knot.
Nope, i never use protection on my devices....imma nasty bastard
I've always protected my phones with the best case available because i always resell them for upgrading and i like getting top dollar for them, This isn't a iphone thought and i won't get much of a resale for it but i like to keep it mint anyway,
I'll be after the AGF Ballistic case, first choice here or the otterbox defender and a nice screen protector

Over the last weeks I sold my N1 for over $200 US and my NS for over $300. Is that not good? Both were used naked and rooted running CM.

Used My GN For The First Time Without The Case...

It's almost perfect. Been inside the TPU since minute one and I cleaned her today. Looking at it and holding the GN caseless was incredible. Slim, thin. Only quibble is that it can be a tad slippery. I'm way to chicken to use it without a case on a regular basis.
Any go GN nude all the time?
I do Why hide such a beauty? The screen is good enough to resist scratches and the back is really good too. After 7 - 8 months if I do notice some wear and tear, I can just order another through eBay for 15 bucks or so..
I got mine yesterday and I don't use a case. I dropped it onto concrete from about 2 feet and it sustained no damage.
Using mine without a case too. I find putting a case on it just ruins the aesthetics and makes the phone thicker.
I get that people use cases for protection, and one thing i can say is that samsung phones are built to be really durable. I dropped my samsung nexus s countless times and it still worked like a champ.
The galaxy nexus feels even more durable so no worries here.
Using mine without a case. I hate cases. Ruin the feel and design of the device. I did order a sleeve (like the one that came with the Nexus One) off ebay. I just need something to protect it while in my pocket. Not worried about drops.
I've never had a case on any of my phones. I'm really careful and I've only dropped a phone once. I think cases make the phone look generic. With that said, being the GN is large and a little slick to handle I decided to get the diztronic case. Plus I wanted to protect my $730 investment.
Its a nice case but it only lasted for about 5 hours before I whipped it off.
Cases just aren't for me I guess!

This is the one I bought: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAP...2&ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:US:1123#ht_2629wt_1163
But the listing ended. I emailed the seller when the first listing ended and said I wanted to buy one and he gave me that listing. So it's worth a shot if you're interested.
Caseless here. I just have the protection film on the bottom and sides of the back to protect against scratches.
I'm caseless here as well. Most devices feel the best when you use them without cases.
It's like going condomless. You're more prone to bad stuff but you get to feel it best ;p
But make sure you put screen protection film on. My screen scratched quite badly already. It's pretty hard to notice, but make sure you take a good look at your phone screen under bright light perhaps halogen lights and you'll see all those scratches!
i also go caseless- i put a case on when i am at the gym but thats the only time i use one- i have a screen protector but thats it...
Using mine nude since I got the phone 2 weeks ago. Although seriously thinking of putting a screen protector

Caseless here too. I used to own an iPhone with an Otterbox Defender, and after that, I hated how clunky phones got with cases. These phones are designed to be sleek, and I feel like you take that away when you slap a piece of black TPU or silicone on it.
I'm case-less, except for a screen protector from Zagg. Bought a Diztronic case but it hasn't arrived yet.

Have the Matte one myself. It's a fine TPU product. Caseless though this thing feels like a slab from the future. I wish I wasn't chicken.
I clicked this thread expecting a horror story. "I took the case off, and I dropped it the first day..."
Anyways, if I buy the Galaxy Nexus, I'll probably use it careless. Unlike my stupidly built iPhone, I could actually set the phone down on a table, or drop it, without too much of a problem.
Don't use a case, but I do have it in a pouch. I think its the best of both worlds.. protected from dust and keys and bumps while in my pocket, but looking good when its out and being used!
i dont use a case, i'm currently looking for a pouch so i can sling it in my gym bag though.
My phone is always commando why hide it under a case.

To Case or Not To Case...

So I got a regular rubber case with my Nexus (assuming it would add the least amount of thickness) and I always use cases with my phones but I'm noticing that it really increases the thickness and feel of the phone, which I dislike.
How many of you are and aren't using cases and what is your reasoning for each?
Should I risk not using a case or should I just suck it up?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I'm not using a case, and my only reasoning is that I haven't found one I like yet. This thing has flown out of my hands inadvertently so many times, I will probably be getting the sylicrilic from VZW just to have something on it until I find what I'm looking for. If I can ever figure out what that is.
I just ordered the Diztronic TPU that everyone is talking about. Hopefully I'll like that one better than the one that I got from Verizon earlier today...

No case for me yet. I also haven't found one I like. I'm really attracted to the nekkid look though.
I'm generally a nekkid guy. Dropped my precious today and the plastic back is VERY susceptible to scratches. Reconsidering my no case choice but love this phone as is.

I use a case but...
A scratch on the body won't bother me as much as a scratch on the glass, so I would definitely use a SP if nothing else, but that's just me.
But I want mine in pristine condition for when I sell it and get my Galaxy Note II
I'm definitely getting a case. I never did mind a bulky phone ( I used to have a n900 with an otterbox on.. That thing was a tank, in both size and durability)
Got a case.
This phone with such a large glass and slender body to go along with it feels like it would fall apart if I ever dropped it. Maybe it isn't so but handling something this expensive/large/slender needs some protection for me to freely use it with peace of mind.
I'm using a temporary Case-Mate Barely There case along with no screen protector right now and I'm very antsy when handling my phone. So much so that it's a hassle.
Got the Diztronic case too and will be using Ghost Armor when they finally have the product line.
I had my wife buy the phone AND an Otterbox when she went to vzw... I have had OBs on all my phones and will keep doing so. Sure you can get it cheeper online but I pulled the phone out of the box put the 4g card on then put it in th OB!!!! And that is where it will stay!!!
I don't care about maintaining the cheap plastic backplate much to justify for a case, but I got myself a Silicone case from Verizon anyway because I don't want to scratch the camera lense when laying the phone on the table.
Diztronic rocks. I have a bse full body shield on and the case fits with that too. Scratch proof and protected. Love it

heres one thing i don't get from you guys that go naked. what about the effin camera in the back!? you realize every time you place it on a surface you're landing it flat on the plastic of the camera?
I never wanted to go no case but since my Desire, I've preferred the pouches just because it doesn't add to the size of the phone, and then you don't have to worry about anything hitting it. But I think this phone is just too large to use a pouch with. I bought a Nokia-brand pouch that fits my Nexus, but it hangs out the top by half a centimetre. Not a problem because it's not loose in the case itself, but it's still not the best situation.
One of the main reasons why I prefer the pouches is because then I don't have to worry about a screen protector, but I've already got a nick on my Nexus' glass, so I'll probably wear an SP and a case all the time.

i've never used one of these, just looked into it, cause you posted it. Going to have to look into it more now.
good choice. i expect this case to b great because their silicon cases are the best to me. they just stretch after awhile. like any other silicone. but that case isn't rubber. btw, Rearth reached out to me and let me know the case fits both GSM and LTE models.
I dropped my phone within 24 hours of getting it. It left 2 quite big marks on the body. The plastic body is pretty soft and can be easily damaged.
I now have a replacement and put in case striaght away. But it does feel so much slimmer and nicer without a case
do you find excessive dust with an otterbox? seems like my G-nex is totally prone to dust. otherwise i love the case, makes the phone a little easier actually for me to hold without getting the feeling like it might just slip out of my hand.
BSE body skin and XO skin screen cover here.

I already put on a zagg screen protector and i am quite pleased with it however im not sure if its enough. So i bought a otterbox commuter case but hate the feel of it in my hand. I feel like this phone looks best naked with just the screen protector but not sure its enoigh since this is my contract phone and cant afford to break it. Now im not the clumsiest person and very rarely will drop my phone if ever, its more of a just in case thing. Maybe ill just use the case on occasions.
I ordered a couple cheaper rubberized cases and screen protectors after I got my GN. I don't mind the case every once and a while, but you realize how great the phone feels naked after using the case for a few days. I'll throw a case on it if I go out to a bar or something (expecting it to get knocked about), but for the most part I keep it naked.
I have yet to put the screen protectors on though. I just hate how they feel compared to the naked glass.
I always have a case on my phones from day 1. And with the Galaxy Nexus I have had a screen protector on since day 1 as well since this screen is more prone to scratching that other Gorilla Glass screens I have had on previous phones. (Argue with this all you want but it's true)
Believe it or not I do not do this to keep the phone pristine for my own amusement. I tend to resell my phones to offset the cost of the next phone I want to buy. In keeping the phone looking brand new the resale value is always much higher. So by spending the extra ~$30 up front, and holding on to all packaging and accessories, I can usually sell the phone in "like new condition" for an additional $75-$150 on top of what the same phone goes for with dings and scratches.
A case is a necessity. This is the slipperiest phone I've ever owned. I would have dropped it on day one without a case.

Eh. This phone is okay on the grip front. Slipperiest phone ever is the OG iPhone. That anodized aluminum was awful.
I have a TPU case, but haven't actually used it since I'm careful with my phones and I hate the added bulk. I will use it though, when hiking or traveling.
On the recommendation of a few others in other threads, I splurged on a good deal for the Seidio Convert case, which is basically the Surface, with another rugged skin on top, which is removable, and comes with a holster, too. It's freakin' awesome...you just have to be prepared to have some weight added for the extra protection.
I also purchased the Steinheil Flex for the screen but just got it and haven't put it on yet.
I agree that it is a slippery phone...extremely slippery....and I don't trust my grip or the accidents that happen in a classroom full of kids that I'm in every day.
Both honestly. Sometimes I use my diztronic, sometimes I like it without.

Trust me get the otter box a phone this expensive needs to be protected, it doesn't matter how careful you are accidents do happen I dropped my phone twice already once getting out of the car phone dropped hard on the concrete and the otter box doesn't even have a scratch on it

Would love to rock it without a case, since it's a real nice size naked. But unfortunately I don't want to risk being out 300 bucks because it slips out of my hands. Got the otterbox defender and may get a better screen protector in the future, if I hear too many complaints about easy stratches
i use diztronic case and the included screen protector but i may buy one of those mercury cases someone was talking about as it looked pretty cool but the screen protector that was included attracts oil like white on white rice and brown on brown rice, lol but even if you just washed your hands and dried them completely it will still put oil on the screen i have to wipe it every 5 seconds, ughh but for me it's worth it as i also resell my phones about every 6-7 months
Bought an otterbox defender a few days after getting it and stopped using it about a week or so ago. I just can't get used to cases for some reason. I went from one extreme to the other.
I find this phone so nice (Unlike the Nexus S which IMO was way more slippery.)
I went with the cheap Verizon snap on case because it has an integrated kickstand.

I go neked. I love the look and feel. Not even a screen protector. Was the same with my nexus s, evo, and hero.

Same for me. I got my phone at best buy so if it gets to beat up or the screen gets to scratch up I'll just drop it in water and get a new one

Just use your foot to break the fall if it slips out of your hands... There's nothing quite like the feel of a naked phone

This has been how I do it as well. I tried the Zagg a few phones ago and hated the way it felt and have gone completely names ever since. I've thought about getting a case got those times I may know I will be slightly careless, but am unsure what to get.

Bought a commuter before I even had the purchased the Nexus. Liked it at first... until I took it off one day. It's too beautiful to keep in a case but I'll still occasionally use the case b/c: a) otherwise I'll feel as if I wasted $35 b) for that rare chance that I may drop it.
I dont like to use cases‚ but have one on the way. I dropped my phone from a foot onto hardwood floor and it scratched. Not a big scratch‚ but noticeable.

Naked Well, unless you roll around in sands.
I only throw on a case occasionally for a different color.
What's the point to have the device is so well-protected by a fugly case when I'm going to get rid of it in less than 2 years?
