To screen protect or not screen protect... - HTC One X

To all my fellow HTC One X owners - are you using protection? LOL
I'm simply asking because I was wondering if anyone is going commando with the phone, and whether the screen has shown any scratches as a result? I know the phone is supposed to be sporting the all-powerful Gorilla Glass 2, but I don't trust it yet and so have put a screen protector on the front. This dulls the lustre of the screen a bit, so I am thinking of removing it.
How about yourselves? What has been your own personal choice?

you never know.
I got mine protected.

i saw a post about someone having scratches already. Then I viewed the crazy video of the gorilla glass2 scratch test performed by one *FINE* lady here in xda.
I decided to protect it then. the screen protector doesn't protect the whole screen though.
Edit: have to rephrase she's here now.

Heres the crazy lady - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1590172
I used to have a screen protector on my sg2, then took it off after a year and it looked like a brand new phone, felt like i was missing out on the beautiful screen. I was going to get one for the one x, but I have extra insurance included in my phone contract against any kind of damage, accidental etc.. and it seems like it'll be hard to completely cover the glass, especially on the sides as I've seen on the forums that some people have had issues getting it to stay stuck.
I treat most things like they are a new born child when I first get them, then after a while, you get comfortable. I don't want to have this sexy looking phone and cover it with screen protectors and back covers - even if it did cost a lot of money.

one crazy lady here!
nah i'm not going to bother with a screen protector after my test i think....only thing i'm really concerned about is that camera lense. Would like to know what it's made of and how i can protect it (without sticking gel cases on the back etc)

It's funny that on these scratch tests the device never has any issues.
But reading on the forum some people do have scratches etc. just because they have keys and phone in same pocket... Makes you wonder, what kinda test did the scratchtester do with there HaitchTC One eX (Hahaha you crazy british people).

My right pocket on any kind of clothing is my dedicated phone pocket. I put nothing in there with it aside from my smooth leather wallet. If you put keys in there and other sharp stuff, then it's your own fault in my opinion! You don't throw your house keys at your television or computer do you? So why throw them on your pride and joy mobile phone! hehee

Why not get a screen protector and cut a small circle out of it and stick it over the camera?

Just got mine in the post, I'm going bare back!

I'm not balming you. But same **** happend to me with HD2, DHD, SGS2.
Gorilla Glass my ass...
After owning the phone for like 6 months, check the screen again, can garantee you, you will find some small sand scratches.

You'll probably end up with scratches due to sand particles that somehow end up in your pockets. Basically metal won't scratch the glass, but sand will. I won't bother with a screen protector, but I do expect to see at least a couple of microscratches at some point in the near future.
To be honest the first one is the only one that hurts. After that it's bearable.

So true!

I dunno - technology these days. Screens can stand up to an assault from nail scissors. What's it going to be for Gorilla Glass 3? Attacks from ninjas armed with samurai swords?

I did
I got the original HTC screen films from an O2 shop yesterday. Went on easily and did not degrade the image quality or the touch sensitivity.

I have the HTC branded screen protector on my Desire. It's been on since the day I got the phone around 18mths ago along with a case-mate Tough. The protector still looks like new, with one small scratch on it.
Having said that, I'm still on the fence about the One X screen. I'll probably go for another case-mate Tough as it has been worth the money on the Desire for the protection.

I didn't like the official screen protectors, stuck onto the piece of card with some adhesive, by the time i had pulled them off (as carefully as possible) it left a dint in my screen protectors, both ended up with a horrible air bubble where the adhesive had warped the film.
I might just get a nice case and stick with it.
I'm just waiting to see whether i'm keeping it or selling it, i've been appalled by the battery life so far, but the screen seems to be the culprit, at minimum brightness, the screen eats 1% of the battery for ever 5-10 minutes it is on, hopeless when you're playing games, anyone know any solution to this apart from never playing games on the phone?

Wat screen protectors do you guys use?
I have the official HTC ones on mine. but they dont wrap around the edges. Which causes it to sort of "meh". The problem is that the edges of (my) official screen protector dont connect with the screen.
So I am wondering if there are any other brands that do not have this problem and I can order on ebay/amazon or some other website (I live in belgium )

Gorilla Glass Not So Tough?

So I was wiping down my screen ad noticed the tiniest of a scratch on it. I've only dropped the phone twice and definitely not on anything like concrete, cement, or asphault. Infact, I think the hardest surface was tile. What gives?

Sand... It makes little scratches on the screen and is basicly the only thing thatscratches it... Other then it being smashed lol...

Why didn't you use a screen protector?
Next time you drop it on tile, this little scratch may become a weak point which ends up cracking the glass.
a piece of average sand will show your Gorilla Glass who's boss.
Use a screen protector...sure, the sand will eat that for lunch too, but, it's gotta do that before it'll get to your screen.
...and just cuz it's gorilla glass doesn't mean it won't break just as easy.
I do construction and tile is just as hard as concrete. I'm suprised the phine survived. Go sammy!

I've actually dropped my phone in the garage, twice, from about 3 1/2 feet off the ground...surprisingly not a single scratch on the glass. Unfortunately for the case itself, a couple micro dents, but nothing serious.

It isn't bullet proof but it is pretty close. Never had a protector on my og epic not going to on this one either. Had my epic for a year and it always ended up in my pocket with keys etc. had a few minor scratches but not enough to affect
the look.

Bleh. I'm 100% anti screen protector. I dropped my old Epic many many times, and never had any problems. I work outside, not in an office all day, and beat my phone up pretty good, and never had any scratches. When I dropped my Epic in the toilet and had to send it in to assurion, we did a fun little test with a key on the screen. I couldn't get it to scratch, break, nothing, and I beat the crap out of it.
I've only dropped my Epic Touch once, and that was down two concrete steps at a TB Rays game. It exploded, with the battery and case going opposite directions, the crowd gasped... yet it came out like a champ. Still looks brand new.
I do hear a lot of people getting tiny scratches, I just don't know how. I guess like someone said, it's scratch resistant, not scratch proof.

I have a couple very tiny scratches that are only noticeable when you hold it at a certain angle and look at it. I'm gonna use the insurance and get it repaired when I have time.... just sucks that I have to send the phone off (Best buy insurance), but at least I'll get a loaner phone.
I don't believe in screen protectors either. I just can't stand the feeling of the "stickiness" of the screen condom...lol.

I love this screen and wouldn't want anything on it that would make it less sharp.

the metal of the key is softer than the glass, try that with a handful of sand if you want to be underwhelmed with that gorilla glass.
I only say it repeatedly because, well, it's true... I have a friend who got a work-issued dInc, no screen protector. he was all "gorilla glass" this and that. Well, he plays volleyball once a week...He is notorious for making his cellphone screens unreadable...he blames it on change in his pocket. So he said for this phone he will keep his keys and change in the other pocket.
Two weeks later that dInc screen is SO trashed...I mean, I've had some cellphones for 3+ years of "I don't give a fnck" use that didn't look anywhere near as bad.
Got another friend who works in masonry...he's on his 3rd iphone4...he now uses an otterbox...which is trashed. He only replaced the first 2 cuz you couldn't even read anything on the screen anymore.
If no screen protector works for you, cool. I honestly don't see a brightness difference with it on or off....but then again some people use some pretty horrible screen protectors. I also want to assure that I get my $350 trade in for it when it's time to upgrade...which it is in another month or two.

Actually those HTC screen protectors from sprint stores are horrible. They have always been.
These samsungs are pretty good though. They are oleophobic (or so it seems) and very clear.

[Q] how durable?

Okay here's the deal.. I currently have an HTC Desire, and I recently tried the SGSII.. My desire is a FREAKING TANK! I cant hurt it no matter what I do, including sending it flying across the room more times then I care to admit.. the glass has one tiny light scratch from when it spent a day in my pocket with my keys.. The SGSII on the other hand, I dropped it (rather gently) from my pocket the day I got it, and the case got a huge ugly gouge!
We've all seen the video of the guy taking his keys to the glass, which is what you should be able to do with any smartphone, but how does the actual case housing stand up? anyone got any stories of terrible incidents it survived unblemished?
I am hard on my phones.. I dont deny it, so I want something that will handle a beating and I'm kinda skeptical of Samsung after my experience with the SGSII.
P.S. my alternate is the Amaze
I too had a Desire and I have to say I am very pleased with the build quality of the GN. I can't say I've thrown my brand new phone across the room or even dropped it yet (I'm not the most accident prone) but it seems to be a sturdy piece of kit!

If you were unimpressed by the build quality/durability of the SGSII casing, not much is going to change with your feelings on the GN. Its built pretty much out of the same materials. You're best off sticking with an extra case if you get it.

Dropping it on carpet just proves that the screen/internals won't break from a hard fall. I think what OP is referring to in the case of his old SGSII is big gouges or scratches in the casing, which the GN will probably suffer from the same way.

Yes I was referring to actually dropping it.. Every other week my desire gets knocked off the living room table, or the like. I don't actively throw it or go out of my way to be rough, but we have an active house, And things happen. I guess I'll have to look into a very slim case, as I usually just toss it in my Jeans front pocket And go.

Sounds like BS to me. There had to be something in his pocket putting a lot of pressure on the glass. And he must wear some skin tight jeans for that to happen... or something bashed his phone.

TPU diztronic case review

Hello guys,
I ve been in the market for cases for my new galaxy nexus and got my hands on a couple diztronic ones and I posted the reviews on the correct forum however I couldn't leave my lovely s2 without one so I got one as well and reviewed it specially because I've seen people talking about it due its misalignment with some of the necessary hardware part. I made this video so you guys can check it and make your own decision ..
Pd.- I am in no way associated with Diztronic or any of its affiliates .Im just a phone junkie that started reviewing cases so people get a look before spending their money. Mods if I am breaking any rules please let me know

Had mine shipped from Amazon with free Prime, but it somehow managed to take 5 days. The case itself is great, I see the misalignment issue with the mic hole, but I haven't really had any problems with that so far. It definitely fits better than the primitive T989 case on eBay that was extremely popular.
good review dude. Does it not bother you that you have particles stuck under your screen protector? Man that would eat away at me until I fixed it.

Actually I haven't. Good idea. Will try that!

Ditto. Applying screen protectors must be the most annoying thing in the world...
the larger the screen protector, and the smaller the cutouts that you have to align, that worse it gets. Getting this crappy matte screen protector on my GS2 was a pain, now I don't even want it because it ruins the beauty of the screen.
I tried the hot shower method for the first time on my GS2 and it definitely made life easier as far as keeping dust suppressed goes, but any dust that gets stuck on the sticky side of the screen protector is still going to cause trouble.
Running it for ~10 minutes got the bathroom nice and steamy when I did it, don't humidify it to the point where it gets uncomfortable, but you do have to keep it running during the process =\
that was probably incoherent as hell and more of a rant than anything, but I've never been good at sorting my thoughts

I understand your frustration no worries there. So from what I have gathered from reading a lot of blogs and stuff:
1) Soak the screen protector (if it's a silicone adhesive that is water-resistant) in half water half isopropanol to clean the sticky side of the sp.
2) Apply screen protector in a steamy room.
So much work.. Especially since a lot of people have no trouble at all applying screen protectors regularly. Maybe I'm just fail
If you're careful, you don't have to soak the screen protector in anything, I didn't and it went on perfectly, that is...until my cheap eBay case started pushing the top right corner up. Just run a hot shower, and do EVERYTHING in there, even opening the screen protector. I live in a REALLY dusty apartment (no idea why) and I had very little trouble except for lining up the holes.
i have the same case, same issues at the bottom with the mic but it doesnt effect my calls. even with the minor imperfections, i would still recommend the case to others.
Never heard of the hot shower method before
I've applied many screen protectors ranging from Nintendo DSi to iPad2/Samsung Galaxy Tab and anything in between over the years, and never had any problems with bubbles or particles. The key is to have a brief bursts of canned air right before applying the screen protector and having a piece of Scotch tape in one hand in case any dust particles get in between. If that happens, I lift the screen protector little bit, touch the dust with the Scotch tape briefly, and continue the process. Scotch tape doesn't leave any residues behind (either on the screen or the screen protector depending on where the dust particle is) and it is readily available. Oh, and I always use powder-free latex exam gloves

Wonder how long before they get their first return from someone trying this!
Given how exposed the screen is (which is a plus design wise) it needs to be tough to last most people's contract terms.
Think this is a response to someone doing the same think to a nokia lumia 900 to show how strong the screen on that was.
He's obviously ordered himself an S3 and taken One X bashing to another level!!!

Tiny CD rack developing on screen ?

Hi, I haven't dropped my phone or anything that would create a crack but there is a tiny line on the middle of the screen. Its not even really visible when the screen is off unless you look really closely and it doesn't feel like a deep crack but when there is a white background the screen has a slight line at certain angles. Is this a known problem? I really wouldn't be too bothered but I'm a month into a 24 month contract and just know its going to irritate me if I don't do anything, and I'm concerned it could develop into something worse. I have tried to take a pic but its hard to capture. Right to the left of the flash you can slightly see it. Any advice?

I'm sure it's a scratch, not a crack.

And I very much doubt they'll replace or repair scratches. Get a good screen protector to avoid more. Or watch where you put it.
Isn't the screen supposed to be scratch resistant tho?! I don't see how it could have got scratched too as I never have it in pockets with anything else

It happens. And "resistant" doesn't mean invincible.
If it were a crack, it would be very thick and noticeable.

Truth. Nothing is impossible to scratch, even diamonds can scratch diamonds.
Could be the screen came into contact with a grain of sand with sufficient hardness, while in your pocket or elsewhere. If you Google for it, you will find a variety of complaints of Gorilla Glass scratching from normal use. On the other hand, other will state they have no visible scratches, even after beating on their phones. So you just never know. As mentioned, the only way to guarantee the screen is never scratched, is to put a protector on it.
I've got one too but you can only see it with the screen off and at just the right lighting and angle. Used to bother me but nobody else has noticed it. I've not researched it but is the screen have an optical coating on it like I have on one of my astronomical telescopes?
I don't tend to have sand in my pocket... I've seen videos are people scratching if with a knife and being okay surely this is a fault. The phone is 90% of the time just on a desk I can't see how I could have damaged it

But it is what it is now right? They don't exchange scratched screens... So a screen protector will help avoid further scratches. ?

And no... Scratches don't happen on their own. You can try to convince the warranty department of that.... But doubt they'll budge.
Got this email from tesco mobile so it's looking good for me...

So, did they swap yours with a new one ? If you received it, is it a brand new one or a refurbished one ?

You can have a few grains of sand in your pocket and never know it. All it takes is one grain of sand, of a mineral of sufficient hardness to make a scratch on the screen.
I'm tired of folks referring to videos of folks "torture testing" a smartphone screen with a knife or key. It shows a lack of understanding of middle school science, and doesn't prove a thing. Most steel is not even hard enough to scratch plain glass. Just take a beer bottle and try to scratch it with a knife or key, you probably won't be able to. And while hardened steel may be hard enough to scratch plain glass, its not hard enough to scratch smartphone glass, which has also been specially hardened.
On the other hand, there are a number of minerals that are harder than steel; and possibly some of these can be present in sand. So yes, metal most likely can't scratch these screen; but that doesn't prove anything.
It's a scratch, put a screen cover on it and move on with your life.
OK I understand all of this, what I am saying is I definitely don't have grains of sand in my pockets... I haven't even been taken my phone out when I go out drinking or anything like that also I've been really careful with it so I think it should still be fine after a months usage. Anyways they sound like they will be replacing it so its all good, will have to find out the details after I finish work. If they don't I'll just live with it its not that bad. Just for 720 pounds contract you would hope it could handle light usage better

No matter how it got scratched... It did. I'll be surprised if they don't call you to arrange repair payments... But if they don't, awesome.
That said, you had it a month and it got scratched fairly good once. I still suggest a screen protector. Or how might the replacement look in 6 months , or a year even. ?

Keep in mind that one of the primary components of dust are bits of sand and soil (and soil is it itself either organic or mineral particles). So it can probably be said with nearly absolute certainty that some mineral of sufficient hardness to cause a scratch has at one time touched your screen, probably many times.
I agree with KJ, if the scratch bothers you that much, you should get a screen protector as it will probably happen again. Some folks don't like screen protectors, but its the only way to absolutely guarantee you don't get another scratch on the screen.
I've had the one x and the one m7 and never had any problems like this. Maybe I should get a different cover that goes over the screen
