[Q] Clock Work Mod - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I have been rooted and flashed 15-20 roms all flawless until today, when I had one that failed, TGF cwm recovery, I was abel to recover my backup, but does this not restore it to original rom (meaning with setting, theams etc) If not is there a program out there that will back up your desktop as is, because its a pain to reinstall and set everything up again, espicaly if you are reverting to a backup of a rom. resign it resetup keyboard, theam etc.
Im not a noob just one to clock work restore.
Thanks in advance

It completly restores everything. I use it all the time to flash back to my daily driver. Desktop, Web pages, call Logs, SMS messages, all get restored.

if you made a nandroid it restores EVERYTHING back to the way it was...including the themes, keyboard, apps whatever it is...idk what you did, but it certainly wasn't a nandroid or else everything would have been restored
there is no currently no method other than a nandroid that works flawlessly
setting up homescreens and themes over again are a way of life when you flash new roms
it sucks...but whatever...if you dont like it, dont flash new roms (not directed at you...im saying in general)

There must be something wrong with your backup because when you restore a backup, it restores exactly how it was saved. Meaning that if you backed it up once you had everything set up already then it would have restored with everything already set up. That includes settings, themes, apps and even widgets. So unless your backup is before you set everything up then there is something wrong.

ok guess this is a noob question then, nandroid and cwm backup the same? because I use cwm as my backup option because it works on kernal level, or at least before os loads, so I assumed this would be good enough. Running the most current version of CWM.
EDIT ok stupid me for not doing a google search, got my answer, which raises another question can cwm and nandroid co exist from the little bit I read both require hard keypresses at boot along with the phones own hard key patter. MAn if I ever felt stupid I do now lol. Kept reading about nandroid but thought it was CWM
Edit 2 after wanting to do a deeper look into nandroid brings me back to CWM
Is there a cwm forum because its not on there main web site so I can bother them about this?

Cwm works perfect for me.

The best way to go is go to recovery, then go to back up and restore, select back up, wait until finished, and then reboot system and you are set.

I always backup to internal havent had errors that way. Only if backed up to external is when i get errors

I believe cwm backups and nandroids are interchangeable terms now. It was probably different in the past when using different backup methods but they have the same purpose.. which is an exact backup of you device.

Nandroid Restore

Sorry if this is a stupid noob question but can someone tell me exactly if Nandroid Restore will recover these things:
Apps
Email accounts (Exchange) and all email/attachments
Settings
Call History
Text Messages
Picture Mail
I don't know why it's so hard to find this out but if you could help me out I would appreciate it. As I want to make my NAND fully unlocked but I don't want to have to lose everything as I'm on the road and don't want to redownload and setup on a 1x roaming network. Thanks in advance.
Yeah, nandroid is basically a system image. It keeps all your apps, settings and other information backed up exactly as it was when you made the backup.
Sorry, not that I don't believe you but can someone else confirm, as I said I don't want to get into a situation where I don't have the setup (since I'm not at home) where I can afford to do a restore.

what he said but feel free to not believe me also...
Thank you both!
lol I love peeps when they ask for so-called "second opinion" and they say "..not that I don't believe you" meaning, I don't believe you....haha j/k
Yeah nandroid backup/restore will basically put EVERYTHING back to where it was before, and not missing a single bit of it. It helped saves me lots of times because I flash all sorts of different ROMs from others to my own. I have a base ROM that I really like setup to where I like and nandroid backup, and restore when I want to get back to where I was in minutes. Loving DROID!
Two tools I can't live without: Nandroid and Titanium Backup.
Like vboyz103, I have a particular ROM fully configured and backed up via Nandroid. If I'm in the middle of playing around and have to run out the door, I can always nandroid restore that image and know I have a reliable phone to take with me. When I make that nandroid backup, I also do a backup with Titanium...
When I install a new ROM, the first thing I do is hit the market and download Titanium Backup. I run it and do a restore, and all my apps are then restored on to the new image, without having to go download them one-by-one. Once everything is back in place and I'm ready to start using it, I do another nandroid backup and save it as a "base" image of that particular ROM. If I screw it up, I can just nandroid restore that base image of that particular ROM.
That's my routine, I'm sure there are other methods that people prefer!
Didnt want to start a new thread just to ask another nandroid restore question.
Should you wipe data/dalvik before you nandroid restore?

[Q] Question about nandroid backing up.

I recently rooted and have been enjoying the different ROMS I am now able to use which makes my phone more enjoyable.
I wanted to ask something about backup's that I am a little confused on.
I know there are a few methods of backing up. I do the method of rebooting into recovery and backing up.
My question is, what exactly is this backing up? I would like the backup method to back up the whole ROM with everything I have set in place, kind of like a .img file of sorts on a PC.
I have been going back and forth between an ASOP (MIUI) ROM and a couple Sense based ROMS (MikFroyo and MYNS.) It is frustrating when going between each that I have to go through and reinstall everything and set it all up the way I like it.
Is there a method to create a image that I can just go into recovery, "Wipe Data/Factory Reset" then "Wipe Cache Partition" then "Calkulin's FORMAT_ALL" and then load up the saved image file that will have everthing in tact that I saved in the image file?
Thank you,
Whiteice
Simply back up everything (wimax, sd-ext, boot...) on the particular ROM you have set up, and then set up your next ROM. I use Amon_RA 2.2.1 and you can rename the actual nandroid backup to make it easier to remember which ROM it is. So you can pretty much do exactly what your asking. Once you've set them up, you can easily restore different ROMs.
You can backup an entire rom with rom manager with clockwork. It saves everything the way you left it, from your settings, apps, and even call log.

trust me if your not to sure about what you are doing at least try and get Amon on your phone. It IMO and quite a few others is safer than Clockwork. Clockwork and Rom Manager are for beginners I will admit but before something goes crazy try and flash over to Amon..
edit: to answer you question though nandroid is like system restore in windows... you will get back everything exactly as you left it.
the nandroid backup in your recovery mode does back up everything. once you back it up then flash whatever you are flashing and you dont like it, u just go back and click nandroid restore and it will go back to exactly how it was when u backed it up
Quick question in the new amon what do we check when making a backup.
I'm used to 2.2 and just hitting make a backup.
And just like someone said above, Rom Manager and clockwork may be for beginners but seasoned users also use this. I find it simple to use and flashed about 12 Roms in a couple of months and I have 6 backups stored in the Rom Manager backup list. Very simple to restore back to one of your saved backups as well as easy to save new ones.
And one thing I have picked up about AMon RA is that in the newer versions, make sure you toggle the verification to off so that if a rom or whatever it is you're trying to flash is unsigned, it will not give an error and you'll be able to download.

Just to point out, the same can happen in clockworkmod.
Really? I was looking for an option about toggling verification on Clockwork but I couldn't find it anywhere. You know where that option is? I mean I haven't' had any errors using it but just in case.

After you select install from zip, right before you check install form sd card, there should be the option on that screen to toggle signature verification.
That's awesome to know. I guess I never looked at that part of the screen before I flash something because I never get an error. So now if it happens I'll give it a thorough look over. Thanks a lot Roxxorz.
Oh, and you were commenting on the other thread in regards to King Ultra's rom animation. I replied back to that thread but I'm trying to get my own screename configured. Thanks for your input on that issue to but that's puzzling to me. I also have the Amon RA 1.8 version as I hear that's a good version to use as well on my SD in case I want to try it later on.

Nandroid Backup Question

So heres a noob question.
If I use (Rouge currently) to do a "backup" under options. And then start flashing ROMs, if I restore that backup I did, does that get me 100% back to the point of when I did the backup? Meaning, it restores -everything- like it never happened?
I've always wondered this, so if I'm flashing things, I can always get back to my fully stable setup exactly like it never happened by restoring? Or does the backup via Rouge( or CWM, or whatever ) only back certain things and I'll have to do more setup after restoring to get back up and running exactly like I had the phone before?
Sorry for the noob question, just want to make sure I got this straight.
It will restore everything 100%. You also have the option to restore other partitions separate, system, boot, and the most important , data.

Here is a follow up question:
If I do a Titianium Backup for apps and sys data. Then I flash a new ROM, I usually do a Titanium restore of both Sys and App data ... It gets me up and running the quickest.
1.) Is this safe, or will sys data mess with the ROM
2.) Is there a better, more supportable way to do this?

1) It's always best NOT to restore system data when flashing a new rom. All your system data is specific to the rom you are flashing, so you don't want anything to conflict with the new data you are using now. Will cause a lot of problems in the long run.
2) TB is the best way to restore apps and apps+data that I know of. MyBackUp Pro is another good one, but TB works best for me. I'm sure there are others in the market also.
And I moved this to the Q&A section.
Well, this is what I thought too in fact I rooted my phone, installed CWM and the next step I performed was a nandroid backup thinking I could get my stock setup back if I ever wanted it. All was good. Then I flashed for a while and found a setup I liked and before proceeding I did another nandroid. THEN a while later I got to a point were I found myself, for time purposes wanting to fall back to my second backup so I thought: "hey, lets try restoring from this nandroid file I so maticulously spent time creating"!
That's when, for me at least, this whole nandroid Backup/Restore exercise falls on its face. Because when I tried to restore the backup I made it gave me a MD5 error..and I know there's a workaround that you can use by modifying the file I think that's basically what your doing? I didn't try it, I figured if the file needed to be modified before it could be restored what was the point anyway.? I just used my plan B which was Titanium Backup.
Anyway I keep my eyes open for an answer to this mystery, I think it has to do with the different CWM versions from one ROM to the next? Still not sure though?
Oh and hopefully this post wont just get rudely deleted like my first post on the same subject did? I made the same mistake you have by posting in the "General" area instead of the Q&A section!
the only time I have had a Android fail for md5 was when I changed the name of the backup. so maybe that's what you did?

Just one quick point of clarification regarding the Nandroid backup/restore. From what I've read, the restore will bring back your kernel and ROM but NOT the modem version. If the modem is important to you you'll have to flash that back separately.

Good point ... Thanks to everyone for the replies, got a much better understanding on the backup/restore process in both cwm and titanium now ) Thanks!
One more question about the MD5 ... So you can not change the name of the backup of CWM? I didn't think name change would effect how MD5 is generated.

You can also use your latest nandroid back up to restore data. I just tried this as a test with my wife's phone (i also did a separate back up in TB just in case) and it works well.
She was on one of Calks ROMs, and I wanted to switch her to the bare version of the ROM. I wiped data/cache/dalvik, installed the bare rom and rebooted. Once booted, I verified everything was gone (apps, contacts, sms, settings, ect). Then I went back to CWM and went to back up and restore->advanced restore-> restore data. When I booted back up, all her apps, contacts, sms, settings were back. I guess this would be a quick and dirty way to restore your stuff when jumping between a lot of ROMS.

[Q] First Post, Help!

A couple of things. I've been reading xda for a while but am by no means anything other than a "noob" I know just enough to be dangerous to my phone, but so far only soft bricked my old cappy once. So a very grateful thank you to all the hard work you guys put in to pushing the development.
As a somewhat experienced noob I can say first hand that reading through all these threads and posts that lead in a thousand directions is pretty hard and time consuming. That's why all the "what ROM is best" threads. I sounds kind of selfish coming from someone who has contributed nothing other than traffic to xda, but a section for comparing different ROMs would stop most of those posts.
Now for the questions. Is there a way to put a .zip of the stock ROM on my sd card so I can go back to stock anytime I want? I know I can flash back to stock with odin, but can it be done thru the recovery console? I would like to be able to have several ROMs saved on sd and use recovery to flash between them. I'm not real happy with ROMManager... is freezes all the time, and I've not one time been able to flash with it.
Thanks

WOW one of the most brutally honest statements I've seen here in a while. That's good. And yes it's all very confusing at times, even for non-noobs lol.
Answer-->once you have rooted and cwm or twrp installed make a nandroid of your system, you can restore this at any time. Once you install a rom and get it running how you want and want to try another rom make a nandroid of that one in recovery, you can go back by restoring it. You can do this in this way until your happy with what your running or you run out of storage.
One word of advice...nandroids are snapshots of how your phone is at that moment...any apps, texts, modifications after the nandroid wont be in it....but...a nandroid combined with my back up or titanium backup is great, nandroid for the system and my back up or titanium backup for texts, apps, call logs and such and you can switch back and forth or install a new rom and restore user apps and call logs, texts, ect without losing those. Remember don't back up system apps or system settings as those may mess up on a different rom, only back up user apps(those you've installed).
Hope this helps a little
BTW--> don't use ROM manager to flash anything other than the recovery. Boot into recovery and flash stuff manually. Also, I would suggest twrp recovery as both have issues with auto naming backups, but at least with twrp you can name it whatever you want before you make it.
Just be careful. I remember a Nandroid not flashing the radio but they may have fixed that. Other than that you should loose nothing other than whatever apps you may have installed on the ROM your tinkering with.
.
I was hoping to make a backup of my non rooted completely stock ROM. I don't see how to do that if first I have to root and flash CWM or another recovery to do the backup. I didn't see any way to do it from the stock recovery. I have looked to see if anyone has posted an zip image of stock non rooted but the only way I've seen to go back to stock is odin3. Is that correct and am I just wasting my time? I wanted that image so I could go back and update to the new stock ROMs as they come out to test drive and see if I want to use them. Just seems easier that way.
Thanks for your responses
I THINK someone posted a zip format of stock but your best bet would be Odin since you didn't make a backup before. I was wondering this a while back too.. Kinda surprised its not in such high demand..
Edit: are nandroid backups device specific? Can one nandroid backup be used for multiple phones? If it can, I'll flash Odin and post nandroid of stock later tonight

Titanium backup is a must. And pay for the app, its cheap and you support the developer.
Also, I've had better results with cwm. As soon as I make a backup to my SD card I boot into the ROM and change the filename.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree titanium is not a "must" I've been using my backup pro for years without problems to make my backups. In my opinion its has a better more user friendly user interface with the same freeze/uninstall options. Also as a recovery twrp is gaining ground on cwm for its better options, one of which is renaming backups on the spot when you make it. Add in a file manger, terminal window, multiple flashes at once and many more options many think it is a better recovery. The way the newer cwm makes nandroids makes it very hard to delete individual nandroids, search cwm blobs for more info.
Also, check our mskips toolkit stickied in the dev section for a backup. You will need to be rooted but not to sure about the recovery. You may be able to do it with the stock recovery as I think it uses adb for pretty much everything it can. There is a way to make a backup on stock recovery through adb but you will need to be rooted, his toolkit will do that also.

Yay...I know, it's about time...Well, I'm trying to understand this stuff as I go about this journey...Basically I bought this phone once it came out..(Oct. 2011) I had the original Gingerbread 2.3.6 on it.. periodically getting the updates and installing them till I was on the ICS 4.0? whatever one came out in Aug-Sept 2012. With that said, I had some issues and wanted to go backwards, which I did successfully using ODIN..that's where I stayed for the last 5 months or so....
I actually had a hard time trying to get the super user 3.0.7 installed, so I had to use an older CWM (recovery-cmw-hercules.tar) which allowed me to install the SU...
I guess I needed to be on ICS in order for the latest one's to work. I now want to install ICS (the latest one) in order to try out some ROM's and was wondering:
1. Once I upgrade to ICS from GB, will I have to Root all over again?
2. Will my Nandroid back up still work if I restore it from back up in the Recovery Area? reinstalling all my apps and data for apps?
3. I'm using Titanium Back up too, so does this mean, that once I Nandroid back up, I can wipe it as many times as I want, I can just restore all my stuff using the Nandroid back up/ Restore?
I was going to use the last 2 of the followling: ClockworkMod Recovery 6.0.2.7 or ClockworkMod Touch Recovery 6.0.2.7 or TWRP Touch Recovery 2.4.1.0 again, as I tried them before, the Super User didn't work..But understand that these 2 will, when I update...
Basically, I don't want to loose all my Data and apps, but if I need to back them up, I will, just in case...

You'll be able to keep your data if updating from Kies. I don't know if your root will stick, but it's a simple task to reroot it.

1. I'm 99% sure u will lose root. BUT that's my opinion and you need the fact so wait till someone else answers. However I don't see the harm in re-rooting. As stated before - quite simple.
2. No if u restore a nandroid back up u would undo ur progress and go back to gingerbread - the exact state in which you created the backup.
3. If you are using Titanium and all u need backed up is ur apps and data then ur set. Doing a nandroid backup is just a safety net in case ur update to ICS goes wrong. If your update goes well then that backup is now useless. If it goes wrong then u restore your backup to gingerbread and try the whole process again. So in summary - Nandroid for system backup , Titanium for apps and data. Also, as long as you don't wipe ur internal storage or SD card u will always have ur titanium back ups saved and therefore can wipe in recovery as much as u want since it only effects the system partition.
I see your confusion lies in differentiating between a nandroid backup and apps/data backup and what each one is for. Hope I cleared it up. Good luck

Yes!! Thanks!! You cleared up a lot of questions I had. I also answered some of my own by just doing things with trial and error, but you also answered and cleared things up for me...Thanks!!!
