Is there currently a hack, custom ROM, or other way to prevent the screen from dimming way down when on screens with lots of white (like the email/Outlook screen). Even when I have brightness set to "HIGH" and Auto to "OFF", all the other screens are really bright. But when I go to the email screen (or any other app that has a white background), the Focus automatically dims it way down. I'm sure this is to save battery or eye-strain on white screens, but I'd like it to be much brighter if possible.

because the auto-brightness on WP7 was not smart so much compare to the other.
It's not give the lowest brightness when enter into the dark room (that's hurt my eye) and not bright enough when enter into the sunlight.
Nope. It's programmed into the pentile display driver. Total deal-breaker for me.

The auto-brightness setting in WP7 adjusts a screen's brightness based only on the ambient light sensor. The Focus and Omnia 7 dim their screen if they're displaying a majority of white pixels, even with auto-brightness off and set to high.
Switch to the white theme. It happens so frequetly now that I don't even register it!
OK, so that's not a solution but give it a go, it bugged the hell out of me at the start but now ive forgotten it even does it.
I understand why they've done it, but really it should follow the brightness setting if they're worked about battery life.

I have switched from my Galaxy s2 to GN. I have few things not satisfy with the GN. First, the screen. I brought this phone, because it is 4.65", but the 3 buttons as the physical buttons, it appear all the time. These three buttons on home screen is fine, but it appear when web browsing, viewing document, photos....etc. it is the same size to g2. It is not true 4.65" it made me very unhappy. Why Google not design hide it when browsing, viewing docs, photos....etc. Second, the color not .good such as white, it seem to buff. If you compare g. Note. G.note much better. The os is slower than 2.3.6. Camera quality so bad. I really hope google will improve the above.
Soft keys disappear when watching a video, which is the only real time you need them to go (maybe a game as well).
If I want to see a photo full screen it goes on my PC
I think the soft keys are a brilliant idea. If the keys were to disappear when you're using the web browser, how would you get them back? ICS is faster than Gingerbread. There are a few little quirks with the GN but nothing is perfect at all.

Exactly. How the hell would you navigate your phone if they were hidden during browsing?
The only few times I wish the black space of the keys would disappear is when playing a game or watching Flash video. If I'm using the full screen Flash player on a website, it should be as if I was watching a YouTube video. Not Google's problem as much as it is Adobe in this instance though.
I do enjoy the soft keys, but yes, I wish there was a way to make them "disappear" at certain times. For instance, while playing a game or a watching a video. I realize some apps such as 'MX Video Player' will go true fullscreen(as it was programmed to do so), but not all will as it's dependent upon the app. I think it would be cool if they added in a shortcut of sorts to make them disappear/re-appear. There's the screenshot VOL DOWN+PWR option, how about a VOL UP+PWR for the soft keys?
Google can make it hide when web browsing, gaming, viewing docs....etc. the softkey will appear again when you touch the screen. You also can return page. It should be better.

I would hate the phone if this became a reality. I definitely do not want the softkeys disappearing/reappearing constantly. Say I wanted to navigate back on a web page, I would have to touch the screen once to bring up the buttons, then touch the back button - no thank you! I think Google has it worked out perfectly. They are there when you need them, and disappear when you don't (which, like stated above, is only necessary when watching videos).

A swipe up from the edge. On my tablet I have an app that hides the bar when you touch the middle of it(I use it a lot)

Are you trying to tell me that the scren magically shrinks down 0.35 inches because of some on screen buttons?
The colors are supposed to be realistic, Google made it this way, the screen on the Note is over saturated, which many people prefer (including me), but it's not a problem at all.
I agree that it's kind of laggy in 4.0.1, but the new patch fixed it, so your point is invalid.
I would like a auto-hide bar option. Obviously there are people that would not like it and people that would, so it should be an option. Think of Windows taskbar. If you want it always there, it is, but if not, you just move your mouse to the bottom of the screen and there it is. A simple swipe up from the bottom of the screen (sortof the opposite of opening your notifications) would be perfect... for me. Then it could auto-hide after say 3 or 4 seconds or whatever they choose, or make it user-changeable. Not only would this give you slightly more screen real estate, it would also help protect the screen from burn-in.
I worried they would be annoying and take up space I wanted at first too. Now I'm never going back. You're just having a knee jerk reaction to the change....itll get better, don't worry.
I imagine it costs about the same for adding buttons ot having a slightly larger screen ...so why not the screen? Makes sense, right?

If you haven't tried the Labs features under Browser > Settings > Labs i would highly recommend it.
First, you can enable the quick controls from Honeycomb that makes it so you have to swipe in from a screen edge to reveal browsing options (tabs, url bar, seetings etc)
Also you can enable Full Screen which still keeps the 3 buttons but ditches the Notifications bar.
It would be nice to have Home and Back options on the Quick Controls if it meant we could lose the 3 buttons, otherwise having to refit the page so the bar could popup would be annoying

I do agree when it comes to screen size. They advertise a 4.65 screen so you would THINK it would be bigger than a 4.3 or 4.5 screen but it really isn't PLUS the fonts and icons are so tiny due to the higher res. I knew it going in, but it is a bit of fudging specs in the advertising. "Usable space" 99% of the time isn't near 4.65".

You could make them reappear by using the proximity sensor.
I hate the soft buttons too, waste of screen space and people are already getting screen burn in problems.
I hope they get rid of them eventually and go back to hardware buttons.
Why are people complaining about this? Don't buy it if that's going to bug you. As for advertisement purposes, it is 4.65 inches. Period. Also, we are able to customize the buttons because it's part of the OS. Just like the rest of the screen.
As for font being too small.. there's a setting for that.
would that cause more burnt in on that area since it is always there?
how about that, keep 3 spots on the same position, while the background changed from black to the same web browser content,,,
should be cool and avoid burning the image on the amoled permanantly.

i did a search but have found nothing regarding this kind of problem.
My display shows some kind of pattern on plain colors.

Its worst on grey and white, (certainly) not seen on a black screen, and its almost not visible on the highest screen brightness. But, its very distracting on everything below and also visible in pictures etc. if looked closely.
I come from a S2 which had not this effect. Is it a faulty screen or a normal effect of the pen tile matrix?
I see the same thing when my screen dims down before it goes to sleep.

Just before it goes into sleep mode? (which afaik is even darker than the darkest setting while it`s awake).
I clearly see it under medium backlight setting, the grey elements of the market are a place where i always see it.
hate to break it to you, but that's just how the screen is(especially when the brightness is turned down & on plain colors). i've had 2 Nexus' and both did the same, even the ones on display in my local verizon store are the same way.
Turn the brightness up and it will go away. It's a quirk of the screen technology.

Just make sure you meet the requirements and follow the directions in the thread. I have used this on a Verizon LTE Galaxy Nexus and didn't have any issues, even though it is in the CDMA form.

TL;DR: Could turning up the color-settings in TricksterMOD cause burn-ins?
I recently got my GNex and after fixing the SIM-tray making the phone usable again I of course unlocked the bootloader and flashed ROMs and Kernels (atm CM10.2 latest nightly + Franco kernel) and I use TricksterMOD to make some specific settings (like turning FSync off) and I also found Settings for screen colors, now what I did is just turn those sliders up all the way and set all other options (like Contrast and Gamma) to 0 (as seen on the attatchment), now I have an extremely vibrant and colorful display without this annoying blue-tone everywhere, even whites look more natural now but I've seen some AMOLED-Phones (specifically 2 GS2s from friends) that have things like the Status Bar or the keyboard burned in into the Display and now I worry that that could maybe happen to my Phone as well because of the settings.
I'd like to know your experience and if you think that that's possible, if so I'll turn them down even though I really really love this display now, it's literally the best display I've ever owned (and I have two IPS Monitors in front of me right now)
I'm using a completely black theme over most of the Phone (black status bar of course, black keyboard, black menu-elements, dark backgrounds, saves Battery and looks insanely awesome on this display) that should prevent burn in's from for example the keyboard since black pixels are not lit, but I want to know if it's more likely if the display is brighter due to the settings.

Is image persistence normal for S20's screen or OLED screens in general?
For example, playing a bright video game with black aspect ratio bars, leaves a lasting persistent image, where on dark pastel backgrounds you can clearly see where bars and game were.
Or writing a long article, leaves remnants of Android's nav. buttons, Chrome's address bar, and even keyboard visible, when tested on dark pastel backgrounds.
These persistent images gradually disappear, but it takes a long time to disappear completely. Do you experience something similar to this?

Image retention (persistence) is a somewhat common issue with all OLED. That said you shouldn't be experiencing it unless your constantly rocking your screen at 100% brightness, or near there, for hours on end.

The Galaxy S7 and S8 had issues with Screen Burn which Samsung improved going forward from the S9. If the ghost images gradually disappear it isn't Screen Burn which causes permanent discoloration. If under warranty you may wish to get the device replaced, it doesn't seem the problem will correct itself over time. The other options I would consider are uninstalling apps which you enabled just before the problem appeared or performing a Factory Reset.
if you're playing games and the background is constantly moving, then there should be little, or no image retention. However, if you are using Google Maps and high brightness and stationary for a long period of time (eg stuck in traffic) then I would consider some image retention could be present.

Was not aware OLED screens' image retention is such a common issue, but I knew OLED screens are prone to burn-in, read about it online, and saw it on my relatives' older devices, so out of the box I turned on the dark mode and changed wallpaper to black.
I preferred regular Android's navigation buttons to gestures, because of ergonomics, due to phones center of mass (wish it was more bottom heavy), when using with one hand, balancing phone while performing gestures always feels like I'm about to drop the phone, I also find gestures to be slower, simple tap vs sliding your finger. And on top of that, I have carpal tunnel syndrome, so it's much easier to simply reach and tap. But now I started using gestures, as a burn-in preventative measure.
By the way, having Chrome open for around 20 minutes, and quickly switching to Display Tester's BurnIn detection, I can already distinguish Chrome's address bar section, and clearly see tab switcher button. This will gradually disappear, but the fact that afterimage appears so quickly and remains for so long is concerning, since I feel such image retention might indicate my display may be prone to burn-in, but of course, I don't know this for sure, just my uneducated guess.
Having dark mode keyboard open for around an hour, and I can see remnants of it even on grey backgrounds of folders.

I never use my screen at full brightness, it's always set to somewhere around 50%, and as I said earlier, image retention starts to occurs in a matter of minutes. Images do gradually disappear, but it takes a long time, and when I use screen for hours with static elements, it felt like it took awfully long time to disappear, but to determine how long exactly it takes for them to appear and disappear, I need to do more thorough testing.
Yes, when playing games, indeed, a lot of things are moving, except for Heads-up Display, but I first noticed this image retention issue playing an older video game called "Super Cat Bros". That game is not optimized for such wide-screen phones as S20, so on each side you have a black bar, display is split into 3 sections - bar-game-bar. That game is very colorful and has lots of solid colors, so after I finished playing, in dark user interface backgrounds I noticed discoloration, later looking at solid color backgrounds l noticed clearly where each section was, so bar-game-bar. Because sides of a display were turned off, and all action happened in the middle, you can clearly see which part of the screen was the most active.
This is why I'm coming to conclusion, that dark mode alone is still only a small part in burn-in prevention, you should blackout everything, including websites (I remember firefox had plug-in like that, capable of replacing background and font colors), switch to a dim keyboard preferably without visible keys with orange-red colored font, download oled friendly icon packs, watch movies cropped in, so you're not left with permanent discoloration in place of "black bars", and play games full-screen, only then wear will be uniform. Seems like too much work. I wish micro-led displays would become widespread sooner.
I don't think factory reset or uninstalling apps will help, because it appears to be not software related.
At least not software user can update, such as display's firmware, but I don't know for sure just how independent display is from other phone's guts. Even then, I don't think firmware can fix this.
The phone is under warranty, since it's new, used for a few moths, and unmodified, but sadly is probably not an option, because in my country, gaslighting customers is fairly common. Service center will probably take it away for a few weeks, then return it scratched up, and say they didn't find any issue. So unless it's a serious burn-in, that's visible always and on every background, it'll be extremely difficult to make a return, and even then they'll probably tell it's normal wear, but then at least you can without explaining too much contact consumer protection and show them the problem.

Play it for an hour (or more) and then test on solid darker pastel colors, do you see discoloration? Report for how long you played and how long discoloration was visible. Do not reopen game when retesting discoloration, because it may appear permanent. I know some people are not good at seeing minute differences in shades, but at first it should be very obvious which parts were black bars and part where game ran.

Very good display tester, free, lots of features and tests, and works on wide-screen displays, enable "use immersive mode if possible" in the settings. I think default color in BurnIn tester is very good at revealing discoloration, but you can play with sliders, just remember position which reveals discoloration the best.
• I'll also attach solid color image, which works for revealing discoloration.
And another dark gray image, which also helps reveal discoloration, use in dark room at around 50% screen brightness (play around), no matter how much you zoom in or out, it appears like screen has gradient, notifications bar icons are also visible, not sure if it's temporary or a permanent discoloration. I recommend opening these images with a gallery app, set to full screen, or simply pinch to zoom, and tap screen one time to hide gallery's UI elements. Tilt phone left and right, move towards and away from yourself, do you see discoloration?
You can also open them up with browser, and examine your screen, but I found you can't hide all UI elements, so better use gallery or other image viewer.
