Handset getting very hot - HTC One X

Hi all,
I know this has been asked before but instead of hijacking someone else’s thread I thought it best to start my own.
I got the HTC one X last Saturday (07/04/12) I have been messing around and getting used to the phone for a week now as I was an iPhone user. So I have not done much with the phone lately. Today I decided on my lunch break to play the game Where's My Water. After about 20 mins I noticed that the screen was very hot. In fact it was that hot it was uncomfortable to touch (mainly at the top) also the back of the phone (mainly at the top) was hot.
I know some people have mentioned that the handset get warm but mine is getting very hot, is this normal for this phone or would this be classed as a fault?? If this is a fault what should I do, contact HTC or go back to the retailer?
Thanks

As far as I know, you would check with retailer for replacement, if this turns out to be a defect. Mine never got that hot, but I don't remember playing for more than few minutes.

THanks schriss for a quick responce. I would also like to hear from other users who have done a bit of gaming on the phone to see if they also experience the same heat issue.

I have this problem too, but I've seen many others report this so I'm wondering if this is just the way the phone is made.
Is there any definitive way to find out how hot my phone gets, without relying on my feeling, such that I can send some actual numbers to HTC support/cross verify with you guys that this is actually an individual phone defect, and not just bad design present on all of the HOXs?

How much is infrared/laser thermometer?
---------- Post added at 03:24 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:01 PM ----------
I just launched Shadowgun for 5 mins and phone got worm, not nowhere near "hot". It didn't become wormer and wormer, just stayed "worm".

mine tends to get really warm on charging and when im on a long duration call..otherwise its okay..

Official HTC Statement: HTC One X is normal to overheat

Well that's a big party pooper.

JayceOoi: My wife found the exact same link yesterday at work and sent it to me. I decided to try and call the retailer anyway and they agreed to swap it out. So today I have a new phone and will need to pop it on charge tonight and see what it does after a gaming session.
I know they can get warm but not the temps I was getting Fingers crossed.

It's subjective.. I guess until we all get infrared/laser temp, we can't compare. For me it never gets hot, its always either worm or very worm, but I would never call it hot.

I have this problem of overheating too...
which is also playing games mostly
at the top part too...
I knew how hot it was by using this app called batter indicator
it went to 55 degrees Celcius and as mentioned by the previous post it's normal
it always happens though, whenever I play games and have to stop
I'm also wondering whether I should check with my retailer
may I know where you got your phone from?

Abernus: How is the result of your new set?

for me i experienced this one time , i was just starting a call and i felt the phone is getting so hot next to my ear , i ended the call as soon as i can ( it was my boss , i dont htin he will belive me if i told her that i have to end up the call becaus emy phone is geytting hot ) and the device temp didn't go down so i turned it off for a while the turned it , it seemed fine after that

I noticed mine was getting quite hot today just in stand by mode it shut its self off after a while, think i may have a fault on the handset as when i checked to see how the battery was doing just before it shut down it was on 28%

This happened to me browsing for 20 minutes straight on the 1.28 OTA. The battery monitor was reading 55C. I do not understand the reason for all this heat. I guess I can see gaming getting it that hot, but browsing with no Flash?
Needless to stay I think I'm going to stick with the Galaxy Nexus for a while longer and send back the One X. Too many issues for a $700 phone.

Well after having my new handset for a few days now I can confirm it gets nowhere near as hot as the old one did. However there is a different fault now. The screen seems loose in one corner of the device.
I have been reading reports of screen flexing. When I press (not hard) on the bottom left of the screen you have hear the screen stick back down the pop up again. If you give it a slightly harder press it will stay stuck for a while and then pop back up. There is no visible gap between the screen but there is play in the screen. Not sure if I should take this one back or just leave it as the phone still works.

Mine went for 100% to 70% in 1 hour and i was not running anything on it, it got hot just under the camera, it went up to 45.9c , I checked running processes and facebook was using 10% my highest process, strange how i have never even used it, I killed it and it re-appeared, I decided to re-boot the phone and everything went back to normal.
I have not played a single game on my HOX since i got it, so much for ICS , and android closing down misbehaving software automatically.

Phone is getting warm after a 20 min phone call

My phone seems to get warm very fast. After just 20 minutes on the phone the upper right portion of the phone is very warm. I know using your phone a lot can make it warm but 20 minutes seems like a very short time for it to be happening. Is anyone else experiencing this?
Yes mine is too

Warm
My very first S2 did this. I took it in to a Sprint Store. They did some tests on it. Next thing I knew they were ordering me a replacement. I would give it a try.
umm, seems about normal to me. when you do intensive things it creates heat from the electronics inside...and its a very slim phone so its more pronounced. my phone gets warm during calls and gaming etc...but thats what happens to computers during use
Mine does this as well but doesn't even take that long of a phone call to get so hot I can't hold the phone up to my ear anymore. I understand playing a game or browsing the internet but a phone call?

Take this with a grain of salt, but the "tech" at Sprint told me this was a known problem with the first batches of phones. He gave me a brand new phone and I haven't had the problem since.
The last phone I had basically killed itself from overheating, the LCD started flickering, then the phone turned into a paperweight. It wasn't rooted, overclocked, or abused.
Sorry but every cell phone I have owned has gotten hot after 20 minutes of use. I had one old analog phone that would get really hot right at the cheek, great way to tell when you have spoken too long. I rarely talk over 10 minutes, if I do it's a conference call for work. I guess I'm just anti social.

[Q] Overheating

So, for the past month and a half, I've been having some serious overheating issues with my E4GT, whether I have it rooted and a custom ROM flashed, or running stock. It has now gotten to the point where the phone smells..funky, near the camera on the back. Now, Sprint labels the battery as the culprit...twice now, they just give me a new battery saying the old was swollen, and that it is what was causing it to overheat. Completely ignoring that I state it smells like fried parts. Now, the batteries were all normal in appearance, mind you, not a bit swollen. No water damage either. It gets almost too hot to touch the screen at times, not dangerously, but uncomfortable. I only use the USB cable and wall adapter it came with, as well. ..Yet, battery life actually isn't terrible, go figure. This overheating happens whether I am using the crap out of my phone, or just leaving it sit idle.
Any ideas what to do from here? It makes it almost too hot to touch the screen at times, not dangerously, but uncomfortable, especially if it happens when I make a call. I only use the USB cable and wall adapter it came with, as well. I've made a habit of unplugging it when it says it's at a 100% charge, too.
I'm sick of Sprint shoving me aside every time I go there, which is three times now. So, if there are any ideas as to how I can get them to just replace the damn thing without spending 100 through insurance..lay it on me. I've searched the forums for a solution to this particular issue, no avail. Hell, if it takes purposely bricking for them to pay attention, then I'll do it, but that's on the back burner. Far far back.
I have tried all sorts of things to keep it running smoothly, I guess my main question is how to get Sprint to just replace the dang thing.
Apologies for the novel, guys and gals.
**...somehow the title ended up being just one word. Not sure how it got deleted. I blame cats. "Major overheating issue, getting the good ol' Sprint run-around.." <--should have been that.
Go to a different sprint store....they're being dicks, never had that issue at any sprint store in my area. You have a fault phone and it needs to be replaced.

I had the same problem and so did my woman. Do yourself a favor and download Calkulins battery saver E4GT ROM. I don't know how but it keeps the phone cooler. Seriously. Haven't had any over heating issues since. EL29 stock kernel always causes mine to heat up. Hope this helps
I've used that as well, but the thing still smells pretty bad whenever I use..well..anything. :/ I have tried all sorts of things to keep it running smoothly, I guess my main question is how to get Sprint to just replace the dang thing. I should add that to the initial post...

Do you have insurance? You could always just brick it to the point where all ya get is the blue led of death and bring it in and tell them the thing just suddenly went off on ya and when you tried to turn it on this is what happened.
Do NOT try to damage it using water because they have these stickers inside the phone and on the battery that change colors when they come in contact with water so sprint will know, and laugh in your face.
my phone also gets very hot like in 120 range
You could send it to Samsung under warranty, and when u go to sprint make sure its a corporate service center and not a 3rd party "authorized service center". When you go in don't mention overheating at first start off with "my phone smells funny, like burning plastic and when I pick it up I notice the screen is very warm/hot to the touch and sometimes has issues with the touch responsiveness" this should get their attention away from the battery and more towards the internal issues, more than likely its the SOC that is overheating if it's hottest near the camera area of the phone

Impressions & Questions

I've had this phone for a little over three days now. Overall, I absolutely love it. The only smartphones I've ever owned were the Evo lines, so this was a big leap for me, and I'm not sorry. However, there are a few issues with it.
First is a strange antenna issue. I have the Sprint version of the Optimus G, updated and rooted. When the network mode is set to LTE/CDMA, the 3G antenna will only turn on very rarely, leaving me entirely without internet access. I was about to return in when I realized that the issue is solved when I change it to CDMA only. We don't have LTE in my area, so I don't mind leaving my LTE antenna off. I'm not sure if it's an issue with my phone alone, or if it's a software issue that others have.
Then there's the screen. The screen itself is BEAUTIFUL, and I have no issues with it. But the screen scratches like crazy! I am extremely careful with my phones, and this one in particular. I kinda bought it on impulse, so I didn't have time to order a screen protector for it (one should be in tomorrow though). So I have been treating it with extra, almost paranoid caution. It's only ever been in my pocket while at work (nice khakis, so nothing harsh), and otherwise it's been undisturbed on a table. I check my pocket for any abrasive lint often since there's no screen protector on it. But the screen has developed about a dozen or so scratches, and one of them deep enough to distort the screen when it's on. I don't know how this is happening (the deep one happened in the space of five minutes, inbetween two texts, and was merely put into and removed from my pocket.)
Also, the battery life is kinda crappy. I live near a tower, so always have full signal. At work I'm on wifi, so that's not an issue. The battery scarcely lasts through work, with VERY light usage, and is nearly dead by the time I get home. Today, from the time I woke up with it at 100% to the time I got to work (about 2 hours, with constant near-full signal), the phone dropped from 100% to 76%.
Are these normal issues, or am I the only one experiencing them? I want to love this phone so much, but these seem like serious flaws to me.
I too had to change to CDMA so dont know what is wrong with that. And the scratches is weird ive dropped mine a few times and dropped my keys on the screen and nothing. And my battery is phenomenal. Seems like you have a dud.

In regards to the screen....this may sound like a stupid question and I don't mean to offend, but did you remove the temp screen protector that it comes with? I've not had one issue with my screen being scratched and I can't say I've been all that good to it for the last week.
I've had the phone for a full week now and I have not experienced 3G drops with LTE/CDMA mode enabled. Also haven't scratched it either (thankfully). I constantly put it in and out of my jean pocket throughout the day, so I don't really understand how yours got to be that way.
As far as battery life, I too don't see the issues you're having. Typically I pull it off the charger at around 7AM and can easily get 12 hrs+ with normal usage. Even with Android OS taking up the bulk of my battery (seems to be awake a lot). Lot's of people saying its a battery drain bug, etc. etc. etc...but if I'm getting 12 hrs easily, and 24 hrs with light usage, I don't have a problem with that.
-Screen brightness at 60%
-Wifi on all the time (connected at home and at work - probably helps, lol)
-2 Gmail accounts pushed constantly, Facebook messenger, and a few other apps that auto-update on schedule (news readers n stuff)
-My commutes to and from work - I listen/watch podcasts and/or read. Which means the screen is on the entire time (approx a 1hr commute). All said, my screen-on time sits at around 3 hrs for me.
I'll post some screenshots in a minute...

No scratches or weird battery issues here. My first two days the battery life was horrid. Afterwards I did some update and poof like magic.
Anyone have any info on the boot loader unlock initiative? I miss aosp
got this phone for sprint yesterday after having a BB for 5 years .. and i'm loving the beautiful screen,.
Only hiccups is maybe the battery... Yesteday i had it full on 100% then after 2 hours went down to 80%..
I'm currently in the office charging the phone to 100% will remove it and do normal routine on it and see how long it last.

Haha, I actually checked for this before posting. It is absolutely something I'd do.
After reading these and other comments about the phone, I realized I probably had a dud. I went to the Sprint store a couple days ago and swapped it out for a new one, and it's running beautifully, with none of these issues. So I guess I just got a faulty one. Thanks all for responding!

Good to hear! Sorry, I had to ask...my girlfriend had the same problem with her phone she got a couple months ago and it was because the temporary screen protector was still on the phone!
Anyone finding it gets kinda hot? I've read some owners complaining about this and it was mentioned in some review somewhere. Wondering how widespread it might be. Might be that people keep all 4 cores running 24/7. I don't see the point if you're web surfing, talking, texting. I keep it on Eco Mode most the time.
I've only notice it get warm once or twice, but even then it was barely noticeable. But I've had eco mode on since I got the phone, and it's not hesitated or stuttered once.

We are thinking of switching to Sprint, so we went to Best Buy and picked up one of these phones and I'm very impressed with it so far.
Actually this is the second one because the first one had a factory defect in the chrome around the screen. It get home with the 2nd one and notice there is a speck of dust under the glass.
I'm going to return this one in a day or two and see if the third one is a charm. If not, I'm not getting a forth one!
Any suggestions on a different phone for Sprint if this one doesn't work out? To me the only other phone to get would be the Note 2 and then the GS3.
A little help here guys. I was planning to return mine because of battery problem. Like i tried playing Dead Trigger, current battery is 54%, 30 brightness, sync and data is off. I played for good 5 minutes and it dropped to 48%. One more test is after it got 100% full charged, i unplugged it, Wifi is on still 30% and not using it for a couple of minutes it dropped to 97% and im not even using it!
So i want to return it.
The question is:
Do i have to pay for replacement? I got mine at BestBuy for 99$ almost a month ago.
2nd is will still they accept it now it got scratch on four sides. Any suggestion?

As long as it hasn't been over 30 days and the phone doesn't look "abused" then you should be fine, also if it's been under 30 days i would add geeksquad protection especially if you plan on rooting, i thought it was a bad investment at first, then when talking to a tech after my evo4g bricked he just said to "make sure the device doesn't power on" and they will replace it needless to say i took a ballpeen hammer too it and got a shiny new one 2 days later.
I took the LG back and got the GS3. I've already had to clear the cache on the galaxy because of excessive battery drain.
If the GS3 fails me, I'm gonna try the Note 2.

Yep, on eco mode the battery is outstanding. The phones is faster than my wifes S3 on eco mode, and I get nearly 2 days without charging. I had the note II for a week and that is just as good but was too big for me. This phone impresses me everyday.

[Q] T-Mobile H811 (Brown Leather) get's awfully hot!!

Anyone experiencing a very hot phone with the new G4? I thought that they chose the 808 vs the 810 because of heat problems, but when I have Tune-in running in the background or Google Play is updating 6 apps, the phone gets extremely hot. I just got a warning that it was 51c/123F. That's quite hot for doing so little. Nothing else was going on.
Anyone else experiencing this issue?
that sounds concerning... probably yet another defective G4. I haven't seen a temp over 105 on mine
I've noticed it getting very hot in my pocket. I've only noticed this a handful of times with my previous phones (G3, G2, SG4, SG3, SG2, etc), but it's happened quite a bit in the week that I've had the G4.
Mine feels as cool as a dead cow.
Sent from my LG-H811 using Tapatalk
Most of the time, mine is too, but if it does anything slightly intensive (I don't think updating apps or playing tune-in radio as intensive), I get warnings about battery temps and it feels very hot right around the buttons/camera and on the glass side. There are times, when it's just sitting in my pocket and I can feel how hot it is. It's not burn-the-skin hot, but it's uncomfortable to keep in my pocket. Normally, battery temp in the high 80s low 90s, but at these times it's registering over 100F.

I use TuneIn regularly, also Google maps when driving, and I haven't noticed any increase on temperature at all, not even when charging.
Mine is always cool as a dead cow too, LMAO!
I tweeted t-mobile help to see what they have to say.
Mine hasn't even gotten remotely warm, even if I play with it while plugged in.
Nope.

Mine got warm inmy pocket next to my wallet out in 105 degree weather...not hot but warm
I have the same issue. Gets really hot just from simple things like web browsing and games that are not graphic intense
I told T-Mobile and they keep saying that I'm running too many things in the background. I've used this phone the exact same as I used G3 and it never got hot like that. The only time it would get hot would be in the car with tune-in + gps + charging was going on.
I have had it get hot in my pocket too. So hot i needed to move it to a different place. Not sure what was causing it but i hope someone figures it out..
Same here. Not sure what to do since some say theirs doesn't get hot and some say they do.
So I took my phone to T-mobile today and they first went through "your phone is hot for idiots," telling me that running too many apps, leaving it out in the sun, using a case, playing games, etc, can cause the phone to get hot. I told them that it got hot when the play store updates apps. She said she could fix that and turned of auto update. Really? I showed her the current temp of 81F. I then turned on Tune-in Radio and made a phone call. In the matter of 7 minutes, the temp wen from 81F to 96F. Still okay. I turned off Tune-in Radio and hung up the phone and then turned on Periscope. The temps raced to 109F. The buttons were hot to the touch and my batter app warned me about the battery being too hot.
They told me it was too soon for the warranty. Really, too soon? And because I was in the buyer's remorse period, that since I bought it online, I would have to return the phone online and once they received the phone, they would send me out another one. What? They said I would be 7-10 days without a phone because they only ship ground, not overnight. The representative in the store offered me a loaner phone which was a flip phone circa 2002. I told her that was unacceptable. If I purchased it from T-mobile online, it should be just as if I purchased it at a local store. I can buy on Bestbuy.com and return to the local store. They said no. She talked to her manager who then told her to complain on the phone and after about 45 minutes, she got them to send me a new phone (5-7 days) and then when I receive it, I can ship back my too-hot phone.
The manager didn't think that 109F or 117F temps were too bad. I told him, that these were the temperatures that dangerous battery malfunctions are made of. I had a battery that bulged almost to the point of breakage on my Sprint PPC 6600 back in 2009.
So hopefully, this will resolve my problems. I'm supposed to get the LG second battery on Saturday. I'll swap batteries to see if it is just the battery.
Oh, I also forgot to mention that T-Mobile twitter told me to restore my phone to stock, out-of-the box state. Don't log in using my gmail credentials and leave the phone in the default stage for a few days to see if it happens again. Really? What's the point of having a smart phone if all you can do is text and receive calls? Without gmail credentials, I can't download apps, I can't check my email, or do anything else you're supposed to do with a smart phone. Of course texting and cell phone alone shouldn't tax a smart phone. Duh!
Frustrated, to say the least.
Did they require a receipt ? I am thinking of getting a replacement. i have a leather g4 that overheats and when it gets hot around 105f it is unusable almost as if it throttles the cpu down all the way to the point where its lagging like crazy…Its so annoying but anyways i think im going to try to get a replacement but i do not have a receipt..
They said if you ordered online, you must return online and yes with receipt. They said they need a store receipt (not an online one) to return at the store.
Mine gets so hot doing just dumb things, it can't be working correctly. It will go from 80 to over 100 in a matter of minutes.
Just called customer service and they got me to online store services and I told them mine was getting hot just from simple web browsing and if I could get an exchange. They said since its still within 20 days they can apply a buyers remorse thing and they next day aired it for me. They basically said because I'm still within the return window they'll send me a new one cause they want to be sure I get a good device.
Nice. Good for you. I hope once my new one gets here, I will no longer have any issues. I'm going to run the same apps simultaneously and see if the temps stay the same.
Found out how to fix it ! Factory reset your phone and it will also receive the stability software update. Mins seems better and is charging faster !

Serious over heating issue

So ive had my Tmobile G4 for about 3 weeks now. Ive been using the G series since it started. I love the G4 but wow ive never had a phone with this type of heating issue.
There is not a time when the phone js not at least warm to touch. Few times a day it gets to the point where its too hot to touch at all. Forget about making a phone call way to hot to lut against face.
Im not doing muxh of anything either. Web browse etc... But its hot at idle screen off just sitting there.
Anyone have issues with heating? Multiple times its given me the over heating message and shuts off phone.
Last night for example it got to 80c.... Thats fricken hot!
Could factory reset help it? I dont know what to do at this point? Am i just having to get a replacement? As i type this from my g4 sensors showing high 60 to low 70C.
The heat is generating from the top half of the phone btw. Like at the camera it feels like.
Any suggestions or help? Thanks

Thanks

Is the battery draining abnormally fast? Check the usage for play service, could need that fix
If you live in a hot area like me, such as LA, then you probably experienced phone shutting down while using phone as a GPS due to the overheat.
I've never Had that problems with all of my previous phones but I'd give few software updates for optimization.

Yeah battery is draibing very fasy. I use a battery monitor and nothing is sucking it up.
Also, i live in Arizona where it has been 110 degrees daily. Though it hasnt shut down from heat outside or when using gps yet.
It shut down with over heat warning last night in my apartment where its 67 degrees in here while i was on google.com just browsing. So im clueless right now.
I just cleared cache partition and booted to safe mode to see if it runs any better.
I can leave my phone on my table for an hour and pick it up and itll still be scorching hot doing nothing. Its literally never not hot to touch.
Yeah. That's the mytmobile app... Unchecked all the boxes in the settings. Helped me

My 1st Tmobile G4 Online Preorder had some problems mostly screen. I sent it back. I went to the store and bought one. That one was always hot as well. It was always throwing warnings at me. I had Gmaps on in my car with the AC on and only 70F out the time and it shut down on me. I called Tmobile and did some master reset etc and still was the same. I finally just went back to the store and told them to exchange it after they seen how hot it got in store. Tired to tell me I was at 15days when I went back in but I called in a few days before and asked what day was the 14th Monday or Tuesday I guess they count Purchase day as day 1 and that's what I thought but the person I talked to said no but they called Manager and they honored it. This phone finally seems to be good a few little issue's but they should get worked out soon with software we all hope. The 1st 2 phone's I had the Update Pushed to my phone the 3rd one was already on the phone so might be newer batch ? I was not happy spending over $600 on the phone with the issue's I had on those til this 3rd one which is good so far.

Then I'd say that even when it's doing nothing, it's still actually doing something, maybe just something it shouldn't be doing.
My Verizon G4 ran warm, and I was disappointed with the battery life. Different monitoring tools were unable to point me to what app (?) was causing the problem. Sometimes it would stay cooler after a reboot. Mine was never just constantly hot, however. Mine would be cool sometimes when sitting around, and then sometimes warm. Like taking it off the charger in the mornings, some days it would be cool, others it would be warm (~95F or so), when it had been just sitting there with the screen off.
Just now for example. After i replied here i out my phone on my table. I just now picked it up and it was 74 C. Scorching. Like its just gonna melt ibro a pile of G4 goo lol.
I guess ill call my store on Monday. Safe mode and clearing cache partition didnt help at all.

Are you using a case with it? I recently had overheating issues and figured out that the leather wallet case I was using was causing my G4 leather to overheat. It went as high as 112°5F But as soon as removed it it went back to normal.

Nah I have the black version normal backing not the leather version. I have the thin Tech21 case but i took it off a week ago to see if this helps.
As im typing this my phone is at 75C which is 167 degrees F! So hot!
Possible a Facorty reset could help? I really dont have many apps installed right now either. Since its relatively new ive been slowly installing apps. I started blank, didnt install anything from backups etc. The apps i do have installed are pretty basic. Nothing syncing or running. Ive been clear the recents aswell just to try. Frustrating
Have you tried turning off WiFi? I've noticed occasionally that my phone will constantly drop WiFi on my home router and reconnect a few seconds later, repeating this until I restart the router. All of that constant disconnecting and reconnecting makes it pretty hot...

Yeah its happening regardless. I turn data off when im on wifi and my wifi never loses connection, it stays constant. Though i did try a few days ago using no data or wifi and same dral, just hot.
Have you tried a factory reset? I leave my wifi on and stream music and everything. The only time it gets warm is when I Fast Charge. But I mostly wirelessly charge so its still cool.
Maybe you should exchange it.
I'm second on that doing factory reset. Seems like you have a corrupted profile or rogue app, or both.

What sensors are you referring to? With wich app? That's fundamental
I were having over heating problems on my G4. It were so hot at one point that my 6 year old daughter picked it up to play a game on it. The phone was that hot my daughter actually started crying cause the phone burnt her hand. This is not good. I have an awful lot of applications on my handset, over 300 so before I contacted LG I did a LG backup and reset. I restored probably half the apps what I had and a week after I haven't had a problem and the phone seems to be running as it should. The phone isn't even warm.
My theory is the G4 has 64bit processors. The snapdragon 810 processors were known for over heating and the G4 uses the snapdragon 808 processors for this reason. The 64bit processors deal with twice the data at the same time to the old 32bit processors and this contributes to them getting too hot. I feel that a few tweaks by developers and updates from LG is what's needed to combat the over heating. Time is our friend here and a bit of common sense. When you install a new app and overheating occurs then just remove the problem app. I always see how the app affects the handset now for over heating problems.
The 64bit processors in the G4 are new and need to have some updates to combat the overheating I feel. I recommend a system restore, debloating and only using the apps what you need.
I remember when pc's went from 32bit to 64bit processors. There were processors burning out, melting, water cooling became popular and bigger fans to combat the over heating. In time it sorted itself out so I feel this is the case for the G4 and other new handsets running 64bit processors.
Hope this helps.
Did anyone try unchecking the boxes in the my T-Mobile app? My phone went from 50% to %5 in less than 30 mins running crazy hot. You could also try uninstalling the app updates, or using the debloater tool on xda to disable it.

Same here, although not so hot that it "burns". iPhone 6 got warm but never so hot - software improvements should help combat this over time. +1 on the debloat tool.
One may argue the dead air via removable back cover can act as an insulator vs a compact design. Maybe just get an Otterbox/Thick case so you can't notice the heat as much? Could possibly lower battery lifespan though.
I've had my AT&T G4 for a little over a week. The first couple days the battery life was horrendous so I did a factory reset. The battery life improved greatly however that's when I noticed the top half of my screen getting unbearably hot. Another factory reset didn't solve the issue. So I talked with an AT&T Rep and am taking mine in for a replacement now. Hopefully will resolve this issue. Will update.
