Win a FREE Laser-Etched XDA Backplate - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Just FYI, we're holding a contest that may be relevant to your interests:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/win-a-laser-etched-xda-backplate-for-your-galaxy-nexus
Good luck!

This IS relevant to my interests. Good looking out.

Cool contest. And its good to know that there is a guy that is printing custom ones. I've had some ideas running through my head that I was wondering if they could get done.

Thanks. Entered!

Can it be done with experiences of other devices too?

Can we by any chance buy one ourselves without competing?

Yes. Visit the GRUVER concepts link in the contest. It should be available for purchase there.
Edit: Here's the link: http://www.gruverdesigns.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=20

This contest discriminates against people like me who read instructions properly and therefore have never had a bad flashing experience!

Wouldn't a laser melt the plastic back of the GNEX? Serious question.

It can if too much power is applied. In this case no. It just etches the surface.

The most important part is not the amount of power (or pulse energy) but the pulse duration (you use pulsed lasers for this kind of stuff). If the pulse duration is shorter or almost as short as the heat transfer duration between the atoms/molecules, melting is not a problem any more.
The pulse is "gone" before the heat can effect the nearby matter. You will get really sharp edges.

To win this would be awesome but I've never had any problems flashing anything so "unfortunately" I can't enter the competition, on the other hand I'm fortunate to never had any devices bricked!

great
Thanks for sharing, just bad when i read the others and see i was the daftest lol.
i know it shuts on the 23rd (i think) but when will the winner be announced? i can imagine it may take a while to read all the entrys lol,

Do you know if the cdma version will work on sprints version of the phone? Planning on getting mine sunday. Unfortunetly I can't think of any good stories that surpass those. But I do have my fair share since the days of winmo.

nice. thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting! I"ll have to think of my scariest moment for a bit.

Thanks! I posted my own scary incident back when I had my AT&T Tilt (Kaiser).

Just to give an example of the quality of the back cover, here's the one I had designed. Courtesy of Gruver Concepts (the company holding the contest with XDA)

The detail is explicit that even the fine lines of my logo were etched with perfection.

This is such a cool contest! I just submitted my story. Would be awesome to combine my just ordered GSM Galaxy Nexus with an XDA branded back cover!
Think you'll enjoy my short story about attempting to update my brand new Nexus One while hiding in the work bathroom and thinking I ruined the phone

Quick update for all who entered...
Just a quick update for all those who entered:
We received over a hundred contest entries, most of which were quite epic (perhaps even of the 4g variety)! Picking just 20 winners (10 GSM, 10 CDMA/LTE) was tough, so I added in 3 bonus winners who forgot to write in what type of Nexus they own, but still provided excellent stories. I will send those three an XDA-Developers T-Shirt instead.
Winners will be announced in an hour, at 11:30a Eastern time. At that point, I will shoot off PMs to the lucky few who had the most entertaining and spine-tingling stories asking for their mailing address.
Thank you to all those who participated in the contest. It's amazing how many crazy tales our mobile devices bring us!

No place for a wriststrap

Got my GN from Expansys a few days ago and really like the phone so far. As soon as I turned it on it got the update so all that is good. The only thing operationally that is a problem for me so far is the brightness, but there are already patches available for that issue. But what may be the dealbreaker for me is no ability to attach a wriststrap. I always use a wriststrap on my phones and since my current Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant) supports that (and the S2) I expected that the GN would, as well. Probably not a big deal for most but it is for me as they have always helped me from dropping phones in the past and I certainly don't want that to happen with the GN. Really dissapointed at this point that I can't use a wriststrap and will have to give a lot of thought about keeping it or not.
You mean a lanyard loop? You could probably find a hardcase that has one integrated I guess...
Don't most phones not have a lanyard loop nowadays (outside of Asia)?
Wow. Upper class problems I guess.

Guys, you can be sarcastic all you want, but I agree with ts big time - having little netsuke-toy on my ol' good SE W902 save it from falling to the asphalt a billion times. I could juggle it with my fingers using strap as handy safety-grip-extension-device and I still consider it a much beter solution than aluminum casing/rubber bumper/gorilla glass (well, certanly it's better to combine a few ). I definetely miss such a strap on my RAZR and, obviously, will miss it on N4.
P.S.: After W902 I've had HTC Legend - it had a strap, gorilla glass, aluminum case, and a shape preventing glass contact with ground on fall. Talk about safety . A shame it was such a weak device capability-wise.

Solar Charger

I've just found this App in play market: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.szlab.solarcharger&feature=top-free
Has anyone here used it?
How can this work? :s
---
Edit: I'm trying it now under a strong lamp at my work and I can see the battery meter going down... fail.
Edit x2:
Just saw this in the description on the Apps market...
"Note: Of course this application is not charging your phone. You didn't think so, did you?! The only reason for this app is to collect the mentally challenged trolls - who never read the description this far - complaining about every app. Or you can fool your friends with this nice 'charging feature' if you like.
Do not let your device overheat! Be careful when you put your device under the direct sunlight!"
How come people at XDA fall for this? Read the app description which says it's a troll app

of course it's not real, the 'dev' even states that in his description ...

But this technology is possible by capturing ambient light from both manmade sources and the sun and converting it into energy that can be used to recharge a device's central battery unit.

...and furthermore it takes much more energy to manufacture a photovoltaic cell than it will ever reproduce in it's effective working life time. Plus the damage to the environment involved in the processing of the chemicals used to make these cells is something the solar panel industry doesn't want you to know. It's one of the reasons the world isn't solar powered yet.
The other one being that even the high-end (expensive) ones that only drop 1% efficiency per year, will see you wait approx 10 years before they've paid for themselves. Few people take the risk of needing to be in one place for that long just to see a return on their investment.
I love the reviews on that Solar Charger app. I got one of my mates with it (he just got his first smartphone). He complained it dropped the battery. I told him he needed to be facing south!

If you didn't mind rigging it, you could just break off the edges to the iPhone one (i'm assuming it's generic bluetooth) and then glue it to a generic plastic case. You'd get the slide action at least.
I gave up on this a while ago, if anything they'd make something like this for the most standardized, popular, generic, whatever Android phone out there. So GalNex or GSIII....
The iPhone always has more cases than Android phones, because there's only one iPhone, and I hate that. Plus almost all if not all Android phones are not symmetrical and flat like the iPhone 4+ so something like a slide out keyboard would be...more difficult.

Actually... since we do have *the* Google Phone, you might draw enough support for a Kickstarter project. Charge people $50 or whatever, and get one designed and manufactured.
Take input from the Kickstarter crowd, then make it! No ****, this could be something, I mean if a load of people already do this on KS, why can't we for something we want?
I'm in no position to pursue this, but I'll be your first backer I think. =)

With the next nexus looming I'm not sure anybody is willing to take the risk to mass produce a product for a phone about to be phased out. Wouldn't even come out till mid-2013 if they started now.

There's hope for some kind of jury-rigged thing you could make yourself though. May even work if you have a holster and a thin enough bluetooth keyboard to clip in.
If I wind up ordering a BT keyboard I'll see what I can rig up.
I think I will try to merge a case and a kb when I will have the time to work...
I guess Kickstarting something would be a bit much. I look forward to seeing what you guys conjure up.
Don't forget that clearance is tight between the camera and the hump at the bottom, I don't know if that iPhone one will even fit...

I found a way of installing NATO straps on my 360 without a SteelConnect.

It's hacky, but it works. Let me know if you guys want a write-up.

Sweet Mercy that looks painful!
Nice hack though, I'm always on the lookout for interesting hardware mods!
Question though, mine has started cracking too... anything other than aesthetics affected by it? Heart rate monitor or dust ingress? It would be good to know what to expect if my crack starts expanding... maybe I should dremel it preemptively?

call motorola and get a free replacement. No reason to have a cracked back! You even get a free charging cradle out of the whole thing (and I think the replacements are stronger because I haven't had an issue since I got it swapped)

I'm in that situation where I bought it from someone who bought it in the US, and I find myself in Canada... And Motorola isn't capable of shipping me a replacement, unless I give them a US based address... Seems like too much of a hassle really, everything else is fine, and it had this tiny crack when I bought it (the guy had small wrists, much smaller than mine). I check it every night before I put it on the charger, hasn't expanded at all.
Given some horror stories I've read online of DOA units, dead pixels that aren't covered by warranty and other things, I'd rather stick with my perfectly functional one . Worst case, I'll just dremel the edges to reduce strain.
Thanks for the advice though! :good:

The cracks happen when using wrong bands. The metal bands push against the glass back and they crack the glass. Normally the back won't crack when using the genuine strap. I had the pebble steel on the moto360 and saw the glass started damaging so I removed it. If I had it still on then it would have cracked almost certainly
There sure are! At Southern Straps we have NATOs for the MOTO 360
Check us out when you get the chance. Out straps come with a Lifetime Warranty and our founder came from the Android Wear project.
Our bands fit Apple, Pebble and all Android Wear watches!

It's 1000 mAh according to the Indigogo page.
I see, so you can expect a real life charge of about 700mAh if this unit has a efficiency of about 70% ?
