Galaxy Nexus Screen - What's Normal, What's Not. (Photos!)

Got the Nexus today and having no experience with the AMOLED screens (iPhones and EVO before) I'm not sure what is considered normal and what is defective. I know there are plenty of threads about this, but very few examples.

Viewing Angle - UPDATE: My new Nexus has much less tint when viewed at an angle. *Colors adjusted to match as close as possible in Adobe Lightroom - and they are very close.
Viewing Angle - At extreme angles the screen with produce an iridescent effect.

Galaxy Nexus OLED's with a black screen showing red and green pixels are indeed slightly lit even though it should be "black" (15 second exposure).

If other people want to add their own pictures for analysis I'll try and add them to the first post so people new to the AMOLED world can feel better about theirs/exchange for a new one.

I'm seeing the same thing with the whites. They almost feel like they have a yellow hue to them.

Aye completely normal. It's what a high-definition Pentile screen looks like.

I came from a SGS2 and I can say the banding/lines/grey dots are much worse. The S2 seemed more glossy and colours seemed richer than the matt styled newspaper type of screen that the nexus has. I am quite annoyed as this was not mentioned in any of then reviews.

very useful post, thanks OP. i just picked up the gn two days ago, and the screen is bothering me as well. i havent done as rigorous testing as the OP, but i definitely notice similar banding at lower brightnesses. from what it sounds like, it is normal.
i came from a nexus s 4g and gs2, i've never noticed this problem with AMOLEDs in the past. very disappointing so far.

that's because the sgs2 does not use pentile, it uses full rgb, at the cost of a considerably lower resolution.

Updated post to include an up close look at the PenTile display pixels. Appears the same as all the others FWIW.

nice thread, i think you should change the title and have a mod to sticky it, this helps people not starting useless threads about their display showing tint of yellow/blue/grey etc.

I think the sticky is a good idea as well. Not sure what i would need to change in the title though.

I wish I had seen this thread sooner. It almost seems like no one else is complaining about this issue. I'm afraid to turn in my GNex for replacement because I'm afraid the replacement will be much worse than this.

For some reasons, the AMOLED on Samsung phones (GS, GSII, etc.) are not that great with the stock settings Samsung pre-set.
Just wait until supercurio (the guy behind voodoo project) works his voodoo magic on the GN's AMOLED.
You'll be amazed.

For what it's worth I actually took mine back for a replacement since I had what looked almost like a fingerprint under the glass - and my replacement is somewhat better.
The blue hue when seen at an angle is a little less blue and the "linen" effect is a little more subdued as well. It's definitely still there though but I think it's worth it.
Oh why didn't they just make it standard RGB like the Galaxy S II?

i've returned my galaxy nexus three time to the shop, and been through 5 units in the shop, problems were bright pixels, scratched screen inside and outside, random movement of the screen (like someone has been touching the screen continuously), in all cases the screen looked ok, just like the photos shown in first post, except for one that had a tint of purple/pink along the top of the screen(can only be seen in grey settings and dark rooms).
about the RGB, i dont think they have the technology to make super HD amoled display with RGB at low cost yet, but thats by guess.

I went to my local Verizon store, and all of the display models looked like this. A sales person let me compare to his phone, and his looked like this also.
Seems like this is just the new standard I guess, or maybe some of us have sensitive eyes.

It's one of those things that once you see it you can't unsee it and it will always bother you. I had the rezound before my nexus and the capacitive buttons all leaked light onto the screens. I had to point out this fact to the sales guy cause he didnt see it. Once he did he checked all of the display models and they all had the same problem.
That being said, all phones now a days seem to have some "problem" with them and sadly you need to pick the problems that seem to bother you the least.

As excited as I was for this phone, the screen alone made me return it. It's awful. It was sad comping it to my Palm Pre Plus of all instantly being amazed at how much better that screen looked compared to the Galaxy Nexus. I was never expecting to see a grainy screen full of banding.
It's also annoying no review pointed this out. I've always been annoyed at how vague most phone reviews are and the fact so many reviews just seem like they really aren't tech savvy because issues like this should be pointed out. The fact that I've read numerous reviews say the screen is absolutely gorgeous really makes me wonder if these reviewers are scared to be critical in fear of losing review units. Reviews should be critical and be picky about specifics so we don't have to discover these things after we purchase the phone.

I'm really not that impressed with the screen overall. Every unit I have seen (9) has had some issue with color consistency across the screen, or banding that never goes away at any brightness (let alone the linen effect). The screen on my fascinate (galaxy s) is downright amazing, with whites as bright as an iPhone 4 and great vibrancy. The galaxy nexus screen (every one I have seen) is washed out and yellow in comparison, almost like it has a disgusting tan film covering the screen). By itself it looks pretty good, but side by side with any other device (IPS or my galaxy s's pentile amoled) it looks like complete crap. I really don't know how Samsung screwed this up so badly and can only hope the color temperature can be changed via software to get rid of the disgusting yellow tint.

I just love this screen

I have to say the Sprint Galaxy SII has one of the best screens I have ever seen on a smartphone, especially when used outside. Most phones outside are near impossible to see in the daytime, but the Galaxy SII is actually usable and very sharp. And that is with the auto brightness off, keeping it at like 1/3rd it still easy to see. But I am talking mid day in Winter, not high noon on a July clear sunny day, all phones suck with that light.
Had the EVO 4G before this, and it is night and day a major leap forward in screen technology, even my Brother who loves his iPhone4, says he is very impressed with the vibrant colors, and deep blacks, and how clear the Galaxy SII looks, he admitted it is better than his "retina" display. My other Brother still has the EVO 4G, and when put next to each other on the desk, the phones don't seem like only a year apart in tech, they look like they 5 yrs different almost. The EVO 4G looks extremely dated next to the Epic 4G Touch.

I wish the resolution was higher, at least qhd 960 x 540. text on webpages at fully zoomed out is unreadable. also, at off angle (30 degrees off center), there's a progressively bluer tinge to whites and other lighter colors where as a comparison, dead center, there is a noticeably warmer color of white. dunno if anyone noticed but at the lowest brightness with screen filter app, there's a hatch pattern to the whites & greys (only noticed because i use the phone at night with the lights off).
besides that, the display is awesome.

I think you have a defective display dude, mine is perfect and trust me I'm picky as ****. Returned my first one cause it had some vertical gradient gray lines on darker backgrounds, exactly like you described, you could see them the best on low backlight. Also had some blue tinting going on whites as well. The replacement I got is beautiful.

The screen resolution can be forgiven for all the other positives.
Pretty much everyone I know has commented on the screen and admitted that it's better than their own. Two iphone users that I know drool over it and could give a crap about retina display compared to super amoled + I even pointed out how it's more pixelated than retina display, and they would take the trade off.
Compared it to a coworkers droid razr, and while the razr's screen has a better resolution, it's behind in all other aspects. The sgsii screen just looks so much more vibrant.

Im coming from an EVO 4G, and I must admit, this screen is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Especially the blacks.

sick of people and this resolution crap, I had the qHD screen on the Evo3D and i dont miss it one bit compared to this thing!! and trust me im picky as hell also

thanks for the suggestion, I will go check it out at the sprint store to see if other units have the same issue. just to clarify, your current phone doesn't get a blue tint to the whites as your tilt the phone?

My unit also has a very noticeable blue-to-yellowish hue to it (noticeable on whites especially) but I didn't think anything of it until now.
Hold it at one angle, pure white.
Hold it -+5 degrees, blue tint.
Hold it -+5 degrees the other direction, slightly yellow.
It doesn't really bother me that much seeing as the theme-ing I've done relies heavily on the use of blacks (beautiful, almost-zero power-consuming blacks).

LCD ripples is not on all One Xs but like half of them and i dont think its a problem just a trait of one of the LCD sources, it doesn't ripple on the ones i tested unless u try very intentional pressure on the sides of the device
my cousin's one x been running for a week more than me, the screens are nearly 95% identical except mine is a little more yellow, both warm calibrated
since i opened mine yest, yellow white is getting less and less and more even, im anticipating to match my cousin phone, i think its just the lamination glue mate settling in
will confirm later if my theory is right

iphones used to have this kind of problems..it went away after the phone has been used for a couple days

I have mentioned this elsewhere but after seeing so many HTC One Xs, the colour temperature of the display varies very much from unit to unit. I had one that was pinkish, one that was yellowish, one that was greenish, one that was bluish. And they even vary how they perform at high brightness and low brightness scenes. I just think its a lottery which one you get. I don't think the tolerances are very tight. It may change as it ages. I am not sure if glue is relevant to this type of panel. It is more likely the "white" LEDs changing slightly in the first 50 odd hours of use. Also, you should take a photo from a camera with a fixed white balance setting now then at 1 week, then 2 weeks etc. It may just be that you are getting used to it, so a photo record will be useful for that.

thanks for the encouraging replies. we will see if the yellowish warm color of the screen will be normal in time.. by the way the screen is outstanding even with the yellowish problem.. what more if its corrected.

sorry mate im a CG artist my eyes never fail, all the four bought yest serial HTC242 taiwan had a warm yellow hue, except the week older one which the exact the same but whiter
and i already see changes to the hue as it is LED, glue, whatever is definitely also the white is a lot more even now

[Q] Galaxy Note II screen issue? (whites)

Hello, I've owned the no two days now and this is already bugging me out, the whites on the screen are not white, theyhave a slight cream tint to it . I don't know if this is an inherit issue of amoled HD displays or I just have a faulty product. Help?
When tilting the screen slightly forward, it goes back to normal white but when it's facing you like it normally would, thesscreen will have a cream tint to it. ,

Pink and yellow tints on screen was found in s3 displays...
Was explained as inherent color properties of super amoled displays...
May be supercurio can help with his display expert app...

Do photos and videos look OK? If so, I don't much care if the background is pure white when I browse the web or read a book. Why be upset if the white is not perfect? Few things are. Marriages would not last if perfection was required, those who demand it are doomed to an unhappy existence.

I'm not upset, I was thinking if this was a defective device or screen then iI should take it back to get it replaced with another before I start rooting and messing around with it. If this was an inherit issue with super amoled HD theniI guess it's okay...

Mine has a cream tint as well. Just slight. Kinda like how XDA has a cream tint, but even less creamier.
It doesn't bother me. The brightness is as good as the Galaxy S3, and brighter than any Galaxy phone I've compared it with so far:

I was not blessed as some people that claim that they got the brightest phone ever made.

i've seen quite a lot of samsung amoled screens, they all differ!
for example: on note 1 i switched through over ten (!!) devices till i found one with an almost
perfect screen. for a few times i thought i have found the most perfect one, then, after comparing
it to another i recognized that it still could be a tick better...
so a good advice: if you are satisfied with your screen DO NOT COMPARE!
due to its production process (litho-) there are big variances between screens. you can easily check
this by comparing a few "identical" units (for example note 2) side by side!
there are also tons of threads regarding this issue in the original note and sgs forums...

Tints are very common among Samsung amoled screens, finding perfect whites is very difficult...if the tint bugs you so much then better change, however changing your phone will not guarantee another with perfect whites...if it looks acceptable to you then it should be fine. i have compared a dozen s3 and a note 2, each screen has its own quirks and differences.

My white is more blue than usual for amoled.

According to a hands on video I saw, there should be a white balance setting in the stock ROM. Check it out and see if it helps.

When my wife gets home with her iphone (boooo!!!) Ill take some shots and load them up. Iv been down this road as im a Sammy man through and through.. every device over the last 2 years there have been these discussions. I must have gotten a good one this time by luck of the draw because compared to the other devices in my house, my note2 is beautiful. When I turned it on it was the first thing I did was crank up the brightness and check out the colors.. very nice. But, like previously stated, the production process makes room for variances and sometimes you get a decent one and sometimes you get a great one. Ill put it beside an iphone on white screens at full brightness and snap some shots.

note 2*is a improvement of the s3 pentile matrix. Its not up for debate

Im takibg it to get it replaced today. I judt couldn't stahd this tint.

This is my Note2 beside of my wifes ip4s. If anything, the 4s screens white is creamier than the N2 and the N2 is a little bluish. Absolutely beautiful display from any angle. This is taken with a 10.1MP point&shoot camera in a room with natural light and a light on overhead. No tricks, brightness all the way up on both, Note is set to dynamic. Same "white background" wallpaper from google search.

As you see mine is brighter than yours.. are you sure your brightness is all the way up and its set to dynamic? Looks like your brightness is down... also, you need to find a pure white backgroud.. that website may use eggshell or something..

Rule of thumb is if you want pure white screen, avoid amoled. ...personally, I don't mind it at all

tints on angles
Mine has that different tints of white on different angles. I thought I was the only one having this issue. Kind of like yellowish when looking directly, but more white on an angled look.

Color saturation & accuracy

If you're colorblind, please disregard this thread. Rate this thread to express how you deem the color saturation and accuracy of the Samsung Galaxy S7's display. A higher rating indicates that you think that color accuracy is very high and saturation is excellent.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Love the phone but the display has a strong blue tint. The white is OK only when looking perpendicular at the phone, anything more than 5 degrees angle and it's getting a blue tint.
Not sure if it's worth replacing whit a new one, I compared mine with some others in stores and all are about the same. Only the edge has better colors at angles.

I aggree with you about the blue tint . In my phone is also visible but not that strong.
But in general it has the best display i ever saw in a phone!

I don't know what you all are talking about because when I was shooting a video outside the colors on my screen were so close to the actual colors of the things I was recording that it was crazy. Closer then any other phone I have ever used. Period. Not commenting on the rest of the stuff, but I was impressed with that

Just open Google page in your browser then look at it perpendicular and increase the angle slowly. Mine is getting blue tint pretty fast.

Color saturation and accuracy are good and can be adjusted in the display settings, the only minor problem I have is color shifting when tilting the phone more than 20 degrees like the problem stated above. When it comes to screen uniformity on white and grey? Well I have been through 2 unit replacements before I finally got a uniformed screen without the pink tint on some part of the screen when viewing whites and greys.

It varies from phone to phone so it isn't something that is going to be standardized across all phones.

Does your white get a blue tint at angles ? I see it on mine everywhere, on icons, text, etc. It's uniform but annoying.

I tried to capture how are my colours. Photos taken with an nexus 5. Look at that orange... That was supposed to be red. That is how I see the red when I look perpendicular on the phone. Photo is taken at an angle because perpendicular shots show both phones red, not true.
The white is blue tinted at angle on s7, less intense white / grey on angle ( not pink ) on g4.
The s7 is in the box, I'll exchange it tomorow. I found one on display in another store and it had perfect collors at all angles, to bad it's not my store. If the next one has issues I'll ask for the money and buy from that other place.
Everything else was perfect on this phone, damn amoled lottery
9h sot, perfect Wi-Fi and gsm signal; the audio is mediocre at best, but I could live with that.

The blue tint is a byproduct of having amoled screen.

Not like it is on mine. I compared it with other s7's, one was about as bad and the other was perfect. On mine it's impossible to use the phone 5 minutes and not notice. Just tilting the phone a little (<5°) and the blue is visible. Normally the blue appears at much bigger angles, and I'm ok with that.

On white screens my s7 has a warm tint when looking directly at it, but If I pan to the side or something it'll look crisp white.

I got the new one today. It has the same bright orange for red but the white is a little better. I still see the blue tint but not as strong as the other one and starts at a bigger angle.

Just yesterday evening I noticed display is not uniform, the top part is a bit pinkish when displaying white, and the bottom is a tad greenish/yellowish (it's barely noticeable).
There's a big problem though when showing grey/dark blue (like the settings menu when using the "Material Dark" theme ):
About 1/3 of the screen (top part) is very dark compared to the much lighter bottom 2/3 of the screen.
I'm gonna call warranty tomorrow and try to get a replacement, unfortunately Samsung's importer in my country don't have very good customer service so I'm afraid they won't agree to replace it.
(btw I found a whole thread with ~100 pages on the S6 with the exam same problem I'm experiencing).

All I'm going to say is good luck getting one that's perfect. I was part of the s6 thread. People ended up getting worse units.

Samsung's AMOLED has come a long way since the first generation and it is now really comparable to IPS (or even better)

I would actually prefer the blue tint if ever, however mine has a yellowish tint (only on white) and it kind of annoys me.

I find the LightManager app useful to adjust tint.

mine actually got very warm display, especially with 'basic' setup. Adaptive is much better, but the screen looks oversaturated.

It has quite a strong pink tint when viewing perpendicular. The slightest tilt in any direction turns it into a light green tint.
The red test screen, seen from a 45deg angle shows orange as in the picture some posts before mine.
Looks like the red OLEDs are quite unreliable. They seem to have a narrower angle than the blue and green ones. Compensation of this effect turns the units either into pink or blue tinted items.
Difficult to deal with this behaviour as a sensitive photographers eye. Just ordered a second unit to compare it with.
Kind of longing back to my 4 year old lovely yellow warm tinted S4.
