TUTORIAL How to give any phone or case texture and make it look new using Plastidip - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

http://youtu.be/3aLaCKVH2Q4
Hey guys,
So a week ago i was planning on painting my car mirrors..but I didnt know if i was gonna like it...so I was looking for a cheaper solution...
On diferent car forums I found about this PLASTIDIP thing...so I went to hom depot and for 5 bucks picked me a can
Plastipid is actually like rubberising a surface...best part ITS NOT PERMANENT!!! so if i ever get bored i can remove it like removing glue from your hand
I decded to expand the use of it to my case..and man it looks AWESOME!..no more sliding ..super grippy and if u need a retouch just simply spray another coat
not sure how long it ll last but with a can u can do like 30 cases.. Enjoy!
This works also on phones as well ..BUT be very careful blocking everything from the front part..I would only do the back cover of it if anything
PD im not responsible if you mess up your phone/case

Here some people applied that to their winter wheel and it lasted the whole winter and it's still perfect so I wouldn't be afraid on the case.
That's a great idea, I might do that.

so far im super digging it..my car mirrors look awesome...we ll see how long it lasts...but again what i like the most is if i say i want back my glossiness i just peel it off
it takes a total of like 1.5 hrs with the waiting time

Ill have to wait a little before i can try that.
Here we only have the standard color like black, blue, red and clear. And its expensive 15-20$ per can. Ill have to buy some from US

Damn ..I can't find glossy finish at all here in Vegas guess I'll be ordering online

Reporting back..its been a couple days I'm finally fully used to the texture ..its still holding nice
Did a small drop test .no scratches on the case and it did a different sound when hitting the ground (due the rubberized texture )
I left the phone on my car by accident at 85 degrees here in Vegas...came back and phone was cool ..so the thingy helped with heat absorption ..

Custom Vibrant back cases?

Are there any custom back cases for this phone? I'd kill for a white or black one with sick designs on it. The black and purple ones that come with the phone are kinda bland imo.

Yeah, yeah.. it's a start.. has a "battery" case design on it. I didn't look too close at it. I'm sure they'll start to come around sooner or later, haven't found anything about it but the cases with the custom designs on the back are the closest things to it. Not exactly what you're looking for but its a start.

most likely.. I prefer the gel case because it makes the buttons easier to press. I remembered when I first got the phone it almost slipped out of my hand when i was going for the power button because it wasn't anything i was familiar with. I started to live with it.
Hell, you could probably be the first to start making custom battery covers and become rich doing it

If i knew how i would but i dont think a huge die will fit in my house not to mention all the raw materials.
Yeah I'm talking about the battery covers. I would love a glossy white one with galaxy s text on it, or a shiny black with a metal finish to it.
Also where can I get some good belt cases for this phone at? I went to a T-Mobile store and was surprised that they don't have many accessories for this phone.

Try the white paint you just have to get two-three different types of sandpapers and then a white spraypaint/clear glossy . It is not as shinny as the OEM ones we have (where you can see your face in it) you just have to remember to lightly sand the device after the last paint application to keep a smooth non paint surface.
Now that you mention it... I just remembered, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755173&highlight=Carbon this thread theres one of the choices you have available as well. There's a I9000 backcover available in the accessories forum too
If the white cf could hold a longhorn orange decal/paint I'd hop on it in a second.

Phantom Skinz Chromatics Black CF..PHOTOS!!!

Hey guys...got the PhantomSkin Chromatic kit in the mail today and decided to install it this morning. The package was very impressive. Included was the Chromatic kit and 2 free screen savers. I was currently using the black OEM gel case with the dinky screen protector. I first put on the screen protector follwing the instructions given. The install was a breeze! Coming from a ZAGG shield, I was very impressed with this screen protector. The screen was clear with little to minimal orange peel! I then started with the Chromatic Install. The battery cover went on smooth. The next thing I did was the camera part. I noticed even though I was pressing down hard and hitting it with the dryer, the sides would pop up! The MT4G has alot of rounded corners so this really concerned me. I went ahead with the bottom part and the sides. Nothing was holding, I dont know if it was the weather or what...I started peeling it off to return the product but decided to look read up here alittle bit. Thanks to member "methodz" who installed this also, I found a new way to install it. I just put on piece by piece, but instead of using the dryer, he recommended a lighter!!! After hearing this, the install was cake..everything stuck on like a glove. I dont recommend this product unless you have the black version as there are many gaps! I love the CF look and it feels great, I am going to keep this setup and match it with the OEM holster till a Otterbox series comes out. Sorry for the big pics, but I wanted everyone to see the detail and the gaps. Hope this helps anybody who was thinking of installing this kit! On to the pics!!!
-Merwin
FYI: I aligned the battery cover after these pictures were taken.

the back of my phone looks like that, but i didn't use the side pieces, just the 3 main pieces on the back.
That looks really good, but I don't think I'd have the patience to line all those pieces up perfectly. What's it going to be like when/if you ever decide to remove them off the phone?
I checked out that site after getting my MT4G, and can't you choose what design you want for your phone? It didn't even show a picture of what it would look like after selecting the one for the MT4G.
Nice photos BTW!

It looks difficult but really easy. It was easy to align. The kit cost $29.99 but there is a 30% off coupon on their site. You get the Chromatic kit plus two free screen protectors for $20.96 shipped to your door!

Thanks! I used by DSLR and bounced the flash so you can get an idea of the CF pattern and tried to get as much detail as possible. The install was easy bro! Also I peeled off some of the stuff i slightly heated and it came off without residue!
Looks good, but it would concern me that the silver bezel is still exposed to possible scratching/damage in the event of a drop. Is there any way to protect that with a skinz type of system like this?
Also, you were able to peel off some without residue, but does anyone have experience trying to get this kind of thing off after a few months?

Just get close to the parts that arent sticking well and run it back and forth maybe like 3 timess to give it a little heat. Dont let the flame touch the CF. Get your thumb afterwards and stroke it into place LOL! GL on the install!
Geezz....I already messed up the screen shield.....DUNNO this instruction says soap, but id doesn't workout....
I see kinda wave-y pattern....is it normal?
Ain't for me this job...I'm pissed now
PS: redid it, look ok now, not perfect job though......Scared to apply the CF skin.
yes, this phone has a lot curve, Even Zagg was hard to put on the phone. but I manage to get zagg stick in to the phone now.
If it doesn't work, I can send it back for replacement. I hope you guy can send your Phantom skinz back too if you mess it up.

haha, i guess i'm daring... i stuck the skin on first and lit the actual CF areas. just don't light it for too long or you can damage something, just a split second or a few passes. you will find some of the skin doesn't stick too well if it is cold out so you will have to heat it. the instructions say use a blow dryer but i used a lighter instead.
I did it! And actually I am very impressed with my results on CF skin! Was easy and trick with the lighter worked fantastic! Very pleased! Looks and feels great!
Thank you guyz!
Looks nice! I would warn people you will feel the edges of the skin when you hold the phone. I used that on an iPhone and removed it after getting tired of feeling the edges of the skin.

thats kinda how it works out... i work at radioshack and im the one resident geek... i root all the phones, hack wii's, xbox, ps3... one of the guys is really good at applying screen protectors and such. when mine gets here i'll take it to him and have him put it on... then im sure we'll go use that lighter for something else...

Neah, I barely feel anything. It really depends, I guess, on the shape of the phone. Maybe iPhone is not well suited for this, but mine feels smooth and nice.
I warmed up really well the edges with the lighter when I applied the skin, so it set tight.

Just a note for others: the screen protector will show artifacts and other random blobs that may look like smudges when its fresh. This should go away within 48 hours as it completely dries. Just relax and be patient, the world wasn't built in a day.
AFAIK all of these types of protectors (zagg, bse, ps)recommend putting the phone down for 24hrs after application.... to ensure it sticks, and to allow the solution to dry

As soon as you squeeze out most of the water it will work fine for usage. At least with the phantom skinz.

D3O case VIDEO review

Alright guys, I got this case as its been popular in the comunity and wanted to give it a try...this case is absolutely gorgeous...looks great, feels great and seems to be one of the most protective cases out there that lets you keep the slick look of the device BUT the bad outweights the good... my main concern were the buttons..I got into a couple of rage moments and i believe I developed new muscles in my thumb from trying to press the on/off screen.
Watch the video and make your own decision
Hope this helps you guys!
http://youtu.be/pkHHeVQgNL0
Just commented on your other video haha. You just go out and buy a million cases? Haha. But if you put a piece of paper where the volume buttons and where the power button is. It will help out making them easier to press. Just fyi
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA App
I have this case and with extended use the button areas do get softer.
Quality is top notch. And in terms of slipperyness.. its not as bad as glossy cases but definitely does not stick like rubber. This is actually a good thing because when its in your pocket it glides of easy.
Sent from my SGH-T989
yes..its impossible to disagree that the quality is just amazing..cant match it at all ,and the look is just plain great..but for the price tag I really expected a little more R&D and not having to do work arounds to use them comfortably

haha! negative, I get them as gifts or people send them to me to review them and to write an honest opinion..thats why you dont see me lying about the case hehe.
Yeah the paper thingy does work ,but my point was like after normal people (not us phone junkies) get the case, they have to do something else to make it work. And after paying 35 dollars thats just isnt fair . Now if people picked them up for free or shipping only..it hella worth it
I wish they come with a revision because if they do That will be the case i would be sporting for good
Despite the quirks, I can say that the case works. I was climbing stairs in an apartment complex, and my phone covered with this case, fell out of my pocket and dropped about 12 feet in height. Whew.. Thank goodness for this case, it survived... Very happy that I spent money on this case.
thats a mortal drop dude!!!! im glad the phone survived! yeah its a great protective case...again if they fix that little issue it ll b a winner for sure!

I got the all black one, and of course was before this video was posted...
What I ended up doing was taking an exacto blade and cutting along the wide parts of the buttons near where the mold for each one starts. The buttons now press with ease and the cuts are not visible.
I tried the deal with the paper under the buttons first, but it made the buttons too easy to press, they phone kept getting turned on in my pocket.
how easy was cutting around?
cutting through was easy, you just don't want to cut all the way around the button.
You only cut the longest sides of the buttons. There was an illustration somewhere in regards to the same thing.

I love this case! I have the 2 tone black back and gray front. This may sound crazy, but I'm thinking about taking it to a skate shop and having grip tape installed on the back part.
Nice review, a bit long though to make your point. I have this case and its really nice. I personally love it. I don't mind the button issue though, I have adapted. It does get a bit annoying at times, but that's only when flashing Roms in CWM. I feel perfectly safe and not afraid to drop my phone. I feel the more careless I am the less I tend to drop it. I bought mine online for $14 so it was a great deal.
There is enough hate in the world. Why can't we all get along here ...?
Usually my reviews are the same length and I try to attack the same points so I can have uniformity.
I love the case and after modding it it def went up in my book however the average Joe user won't know how to mod the case

ive also had the case since basically it came out and it has also developed multiple cracks on the back. one runs from the usb port up about an inch, and others are where the buttons are, though smaller. this might be from taking it off and on every once in a while.
sighs. i have a spare one in black though, but i like this white one.
I have had mine now for 3 weeks and I love the case and hate the buttons. I am going to try the mod and see if that helps. The buttons are the only bad thing about this case.

Verizon/Toro Custom white housing (automotive quality)

I posted this in the other white housing thread, but that one is predominantly filled with GSM housing talk. If a mod finds this redundant, then by all means lock this one up. If not, enjoy everyone
For all my Verizon/Toro buddies out there in pain from a lack of a white housing... lookie lookie
Tada! It's painted with automotive paint from a local body shop. My friend's the manager so he helped me out a bit with this one, although I had to do all the prep work (dis/assembly, sanding, sticker application, etc.). It is painted with the Pearl White paint found on the Lexus IS350 and various pearl white toyota models. All the paint used are bumper spec (in other words, a flex additive was added to allow some flexibility in the paint, as opposed to something used to paint metal body panels), and everything was sealed in with a layer of clear coat.
The battery door isn't done yet, but should be done tomorrow. Shall update appropriately as time allows.
Edit: I'll try to get better pics when the sun comes out (if ever...). These indoor/gloomy pics don't do it justice at all!
Edit 2: All done, check it out! That's a chrome Samsung logo that's sealed in with the clear coat btw
The last pic is trying to demonstrate the pearlescent effect btw

It's probably about $30 worth of materials... and I mean JUST materials.
If you want to do this on your own, you will need some VERY fine grit sand paper, disassembly tools, VERY good quality paint with clear coat, the Sammy sticker (from Germany), a paint booth with automotive grade oven, spray gun, a certified automotive painter, and way too much time on your hands.
The painting process used is what auto body shops refer to as "3-stage" paint. This is basically pearlescent paint, which requires multiple methods to acquire the "chameleon" effect. How you do that is beyond me, but the shop did a damn good job of it.
As for pics, I've updated the OP with the completed phone. It is niiiiiiiiiiice :victory:

Amen to that one. I probably would only do this again if I'm feelin' frisky with my cellular (don't act like you don't understand what I'm saying )
707: I might be able to get a "frosted" finish instead of the high gloss like this one next time around, but I would imagine the matte finishes would attract the dye from jean pockets way too easily. Wish I could've taken nicer pics to demonstrate the nice pearl effect though.

Yeah, I didn't really think about the whole jeans thing. Maybe a matte black, that would be cool as I well, maybe the next time have a lot of free time I'll try something like this.
The pictures aren't that bad, I do like the way yours turned out, but one thing that bothers me is the chrome Samsung logo on the back, it catches my eye and it looks good, but it sorta looks like it just makes the phone look bulkier and heavier.

I actually wanted a smaller Samsung logo, but that was the smallest I could find on eBay (there's only one dude who sells them, he's from Germany). Either way, I just really liked the way it was sealed by the clear coat so smoothly.
BTW, all the original logos (Verizon, Samsung, 4GLTE) that were embossed on the original cover no longer show. There isn't even a hint of a bump where they used to be
Looks kind of cool, but I wonder how long it will hold up. I would think that it would chip really easily. Either way thumbs up for having the nads to do something you like.

Guess I'll never know. I actually sold this phone to another Nexus user (he had his phone "stolen" from him, but I'll leave it at that for his privacy concerns). I felt kinda sad to let this go, because he didn't seem to to realize how special (at least to me) this particular Gnex was. Wasn't even aware that there is no such thing as a white Verizon Gnex except customs.
Oh well, it's gone now and I have some money to bring the gf to Vegas :victory:
