Our full review, if anyone is interested. - HTC One X

Hope it helps people make a decision on whether to get the device or not.

Maybe a stupid question... but why not just add to the existing reviews thread rather than create a new one?

Not a stupid question at all, I'll bare that in mind next time.

Great review. Of all the things discussed in your review and on the forum the only one that concerns me is battery life. It seems to be getting better but using the same apps the same way I did with my SGS2 I'm getting about 30% less battery life and that's with a larger battery.
I know skins like Sense are a hot button on XDA but as SoC power rises the the performance drain is becoming less of an issue. My personal view is that I use my phone to get things done. Having a phone that's faster than everyone elses in benchmarks is secondary. I've been using Sense 4.0 for a week and I've really come to admire the work HTC's done with it. Here's some examples of subtle things they've done to improve productivity.
- The productivity lock screen is brilliant. The ability to see incoming notifications (and scroll through them) without having to unlock the phone is a great idea. As is being able to go directly to them via the ring.
- When sending a rejection text to an ignored incoming caller, Sense creates a task to remind you to call them back.
- Integrating third party music players in to the Music Hub and displaying them full sceen on the lock screen so you can control them is also a nice feature.
There are some faults too.
- No voice dialer to enable BT calling. Seriously?
- No LinkedIn connector for the FriendStream. Come on, it's 2012 and they just IPO'd.

xdaman,
Great review for the HOX. The night photos are not great and the last one wasn't in-focus. I think HTC needs to fine tune the night settings for better performance. What firmware are you running on the tested HOX? Did you have any screen flickering? Any of the common bugs?
Thanks.

[Q] Dash backlight questions

You all should know by now I am a active member on the forum answering questions when I and by no means am I stupid when it comes to tweaking my Dash: Black but I am having a tricky question; and yes I did use the search feature but didn't find much to these specific questions.
1]. I remember I once tweaked the brightness of my dash so it wasn't as bright, does anyone know how I did that because I can't remember for the life of me.
2]. I also am wondering if there is a way to keep the back light on when I am using Opera or another app on my phone but when I go to my home screen it only stays on for like 5 seconds [which is the minimum] because I like to save battery power but I also like to read articles on my phone. Any suggestions? Thanks again guys!

Yes I have, there is only so much that option will allow you to do. I am thinking there's a registry tweak somewhere that I am forgetting that would allow this to happen, or maybe a 3rd party app.
There was life before Excalibur
Look for "Tornado Lowlight" - this may work.
It has the same chipset (OMAP 850).

[APP] [REQUEST] Notifications

Hi all,
This is my first post on xda so please move it to the right section if this isn't it.
As the sgs2 doesn't have a notification led I was wondering if there is a possibility to have the soft keys flash upon receiving a text or an email and so on.
Reason I thought id suggest it because my other phone the lg o2x has the same issue with regards to the led and there is an app for that.
I am willing to buy it from the market to support the developer of course.
What you are looking for is called Backlight Notfication or BLN and as far as i know the kernel for the phone needs to support this. Since the SGS2 is fairly new there isn't a kernel with working BLN yet but most of the kernel hackers are looking into this feature. I'm sure it's coming, it just needs some time.
Hope this answers your question even if it doesn't help you with your problem.
Thanks for the quick answer. I just thought id put it out there.
It's not really an issue since most ppl prob check their phone regularly but I think it would be a nice addition to have it think.... Especially at night when you don't really want to turn your phone on every few mins to check for a notification
I miss this as well.
It seems to be rly complicated to implement, as some ppl are working on it for quite some month (!) now and still there's no BLN available… I hope that some day we'll have it nevertheless…

Well, if you consider that these people do it all in their free time then "month" suddenly isn't that much. Also this is probably not a top priority in the first kernel releases. These will concentrate on speed and stability, before new features are added.
Patience is a virtue, especially if you don't have to pay for the finished product

The guy is trying to stimulate discussion on a hot subject. Stop posting links to 2months old and irrelevant (its not the the same update...). Besides, he didnt ask for a changelog... as far as i know..
Personally, the camera is a huge improvement in many ways, browser query delay is faster (definitely, not placebo). I cant say the device is "snappier" since it was already pretty much instant. Also, i used to have a kind of lag while typing text in browser (such as this post), that is also gone now. I did experience a few app crashes though, but i am certajn that its because the custom rom needs work (B29 aokp).
Edit: also, the android OS battery using is significantly less. Of course sampke is smalll but it went from 25% to 4-5%

Honestly, even though it is a 2 month old thread. I read a few bullets on the OP post and most of those changes are relatively accurate on the OTA update released yesterday.
So I don't see what your point is? Even the points you made about 4.0.4 is listed,
Noticeably Faster
Browser performance noticeably improved
Miscellaneous camera UI changes

my point is relatively clear. It is old and this is a new update, you dont know how accurate it is. Besides, his post was more oriented towards a discussion than "please post change logs!!!!!". If you dont like those kind of discussions, fine, but i think its appropriate instead of being an ass about a new thread.
I find nothing wrong with this thread. Who knows what else Google coulda added to 4.0.4 for GSM over the leaked 4.0.4 for CDMA.
Not only are the phones different which can affect things such as reception and radios, but this is much newer and could have additional improvements. No point attaching GSM stuff to an already quite long CDMA change log thread as no one is going to see it.
-Picture quality is definitely improved; likely related to better operation
-Dialer is slightly bigger (?); layout a little different, e.g. settings button at bottom of dialer
-Haven't noted a difference in rotation,
-Backing out of some apps is faster, Play for instance, hit back-back-back and there is no lag migrating back and out of the app,
-The majority of my other observations are likely placebo (i.e. smoother, etc...)
Did google double the storage? Haha.

It actually is very accurate. Yes there are some new changes but not many. A lot of the most obvious changes have been pointed out in OP and we can quickly recognize them as we use 4.0.4.
That thread could of been continued on since OP actually had a lot of the points down. Many of the points that people are posting in this thread have been already made in that thread listing changes from a "leaked" build. The same bootloader from that leak made it into the OTA.

After 1 or 2 battery pulls that behavior went away for me.
First off, thought I'd let you know I updated with the CWM method. I was 100% stock but unlocked bootloader. Worked fine took 2min to do. One small quip was after my first reboot, I didn't have cellular network connection. Took 2-3 more reboots and lots of toggling to make it work. Now its working just fine.
Here's what I've observed:
1) Power menu sound toggles are nice (50x better if mute actually meant full system mute)
2) Screen shot sound changed to the same as the camera shutter sound
3) Feels snappy!
4) Color fade and transitions (like in menus) are now smooth instead of jittery.
5) Multitasking button has less lag. Definitely not perfect still though.
6) GTalk icon updated to look like Messaging and Google Voice.
7) When you turn the screen on, it fades in a much more pronounced way (imo).
8) Auto-rotate is fast and smooth, although I never found it particularly sluggish before.
9) Other, likely "placebo", effects of smoothness, etc.

Known Bugs & Issues

Hey guys
A lot of you seem to have little issues with the HTC One X so I decided to make a thread where we can gather all those issues to find out if you are alone or not. Which is important to know if the problem is related to your specific device or rather some software issue.
Bugs
Screen stops turning orientation, even in settings menu G-sensor no longer moves. - POSSIBLE FIX : Go to taskmanager and kill all tasks - All credit and thanks go to casca
Calendar widget crashes if more then 20 appointments - TIP : Just remove the widget since it will keep crashing until you remove it...
Other HTC widgets seem to be causing lag too.
GPU Rendering can't be forced.
Live wallpaper stops on switching between screens
GPS issues - Possible fix : Download gps status on the market and clear the a-gps data - if this works all credit and thanks go to matmar
Screen starts "jumping"
When browsing/camera/other Sense 4.0 related tasks -> It looks like there is "noise" on the screen. Like this
SIM card stops working/restarts/no connection
The three dot menu button appears in some ICS native apps, like the YouTube app for example. - Fix for this in Dev section (requires unlock)
Tegra 3 games (and some others) lag, this is probably connect to some video driver bug. (Hardware is fast enouf to play it without lag)
Screen reactivating after using the lock-button (only 1 click ofc)
When opening the Clock app (just by pressing the clock on your homescreen), and moving to the Timer-tab (the one on the far right) it always adds one hour, one minute and one second to whatever time you set it to.
Issues
Lag in Multi-Tasking window and other elements - TIP : Go to Dev Settings - disable animations. This improved the speed a lot for me (even thou most animations keep on running, only the excessive ones get turned off) [This lag is clearly a software issue, other launchers are lag-free; should be fixed soon]
A lot of people are reporting signal problems. (No clue what's causing it)
Yellow spots on the screen
Always try to Factory Reset your device if you have a problem. Most of the time this fixes it. (Last resort)
Post your bugs and issues and if they get posted frequently I'll add them to the list.
Note to people who are planning on buying an HTC One X :
The device is still a great piece of technology, every software has bugs in it at the start! Don't get dissapointed because there are some minor glitches in the software, most of them will be fixed within 7 days from now (Update).
Live wallpaper stops on switching between screens

Can't turn on GPU 2D Rendering.
Can't turn on Animation once unchecked.
heating issues..? over heating of device, turning off sim/phone services after certain temperature, not letting charge, etc... many guys complained about this.. very sad...
When i use the power button to turn off the screen it occasionaly turns on to the lockscreen after 0.5 seconds; Not always, normally when the screen was on for a longer time.
Glitches all over the place...
backlight not stable on light grey picture. (With my device i noticed it when i searched a grey pic on google, and zoomed in, the backlight flickered 1 second to "settle" after that it was good). On full birghtness i didn't had the probleme.
I am not satisfied with that phone.
It is not fast and laggy sometimes.
Multitasking button is not responding a lot.
When open some apps with black background, the resolution of the black color background sucks and shows blurry lines. It appears when adding gmail account.
I tried talking Tom and i found that it is working slower than in sensation and lags a lot.
I hate sense and i like to see AOSP Rom soon.

I'm glad I didn't buy this phone yet. Every day that goes by, I want this phone less and less seriously. I think I'm gonna wait for the Galaxy SIII. I'm sure I won't be disappointed with it. I refuse to spend money on a high end phone to see many glitches and lag at launch, even if it is fixable with ROMs and kernels, you shouldn't have to do that . Come one HTC

HTC better not play any silly games with these OTA and keep pushing the date back, this dire battery life isn't fit for purpose right now.

Yes you have be be glad because u didn't buy it.
Sense 4.0 really looks ugly except the clock and it also consumes the battery life.
The dialer also looks very bad.
Why does HTC love this old green color over the awesome blue one released as default by google?
I hear what you guys are saying. The only issue i've seen that really concerns me is this glitching i keep reading about. Although I did see a review from netbooknews.de that had this issue with noticeable lag in the multitasking button and screen taps.
I would love to say that you don't have to worry about it but the reality is that you probably won't see a fix till CM9 is released or some other AOSP build.

Instead of slating it immediately, how about trying to use it as stock/unrooted, like the way you received it. Your sig says you've already rooted and flashed a different ROM - how do you know it's not the alternative ROM giving the grief.

Sadly this isn't the problem in most of the cases. Until now only Sense 3.0 costum roms are available, the issue is however that all this roms are BASED on the stock rom (because devs don't have acces to scource code of Sense 3.0).
A lot of issues you experience in the costum roms are caused by bugs in the code of Sense. But this isn't always the case ofcourse! Let's hope HTC fixes them soon.
I agree that this phone isn't as snappy as I had hoped, its much the same as running sense 4.0 on my sensation.
That said, I got the DHD on release, and there were plenty of bugs, same with the sensation.
In the end, the hardware is top notch, the software will get sorted over time. It's the price we pay for being early adopters of a new model.

[App][Alpha][10/01] Flip For Speaker/Silence Call (Inpsired by Sense)

Released to market!
Remember all those nifty little tricks in Sense which you sometimes miss on cm7 and cm9? I thought about getting those features into an app which can be used with all ROMS. The main one I'm thinking of is the flip for speaker but there are also other ones like the loud ring in pocket and so on. It was really something that I wanted in an app. The closest one I found was Sanity which switched on the speaker as soon as the user takes the phone off his ear, which can lead to troubles such as in a classroom/meeting.
So far, I have a working version of the Flip For Speaker with an option to disable it of course. I'll will try to port the other features. I would like to get your opinion of small features that improve the usability like this one and I can try including them as well. They can be from other ROMS of other phones like say something from TouchWiz or MotoBlur. Post them here and I'll see what I can do.
Meanwhile, here is an alpha version of the app if you would like to test it out. If you run into errors, let me know. Try getting a logcat if you can. I'm open to suggestions.
Current Features:
Flip to Silence
Flip for Speaker
Pick up to answer (Meaning hold it up to your ear)
Changelog:
Version 1.0
Initial market release!
Get it from: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ajaykumar.sense
Version 0.6
Fixed the mute bug on pick up to answer
Version 0.5.1
Holo theme for ICS onwards
Version 0.5
Options for speaker volume and headset volume
Version 0.4
Pick up to answer
Version 0.3
+Should support other devices (Earlier had some issues with the sensor readings)
^Improved the usage of proximity sensor
Version 0.2
+Added option for flip to silence call
Version 0.1.1a
^Fixed bugs
Version 0.1a
+Flip to silence call
^Improved flip mechanism by including pitch and roll.
Version 0
+Flip for speaker
I would also like a nice name for the app so suggestions are welcome!(Don't want to use the word sense in case of any copyright issues later on when hopefully, I can release the app into the Market).
If anyone is willing to test on other devices, please let me know.
Source code: https://github.com/ajaykumarkannan/Sense-and-Sanity
You can report issues and see the existing issues here: https://github.com/ajaykumarkannan/Sense-and-Sanity/issues?state=open
You can also make feature requests there.
Heres a good app to control flip to speaker: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.matthew.rice
Only thing is, its a paid app, but works very well for me.
Nice find!
I think I'll continue developing this app so that it can suit my purposes better and it's fun developing
I'm also thinking of adding flip to silence feature. Anything else you would like to see, let me know.

Had a bug in the earlier version I posted. I thought that only pitch would be enough so the speaker kept turning on at incorrect moments. I've fixed that I'll post an update tonight.
As for the sense clock, sorry. I'm not that good at theming nor do I have enough patience for something like that! Henry would be a better person to ask. You can also check out UCCW clock widget which has sense clock like themes.
For internet passthrough, you can checkout this thing called "Reverse Tethering". I haven't used it personally but it should work.
Fixed the issue with the roll and also added flip for silence working. Updated apk in the OP. I've tested it very briefly cause I'm about to head off to sleep. Let me know if you find some issues.
Updated with a few bug fixes and hopefully should now support other devices because I've changed the API now. Check the changelog.
Added Pick up to Answer. Updated OP.
'senseable speaker control'
or
'non-sense speaker control'
Just a couple of things that popped in my head
Is this still in development? I really liked this idea and would pay a full app to do the "nifity tricks" (my suggested app name )

Hey AceRoom, great work on the sense app hey. Features I know I definitely miss on CM7 and CM9 roms are the jus the three you mentioned earlier on - quiet ring on pickup - flip for speaker and pocket mode. The rest are not so important but if you could get those working on any cm7 or CM9 rom - that would totally rock!
Looking forward to more of your work

thanks a lot, i was searching all over for these features.

Actually, no. It picks up fine but the caller can't hear me. So I've just turned it off till you you fix it.
For some reason, it mutes the phone when it does that. So I tried explicity unmuting the phone and it still doesn't work. You can unmute it manually but it kind of defeats the purpose anyhow!
It's actually a hack I found somewhere since Android stopped supporting the call answer API after 2.3 (But had it in 2.2 and earlier).
The next thing I'm planning on adding is a speaker volume and normal volume (Because I find that I have to increase the volume when I flip for speaker usually).
I've tested it on the WFS only on CM9. What ROMs are the rest of you guys using?
