Autostartup of applications - Gen9, Gen10 General

This might be a general ICS question:
Is it useful to use applications like StartupManager in combination with ICS?
I disabled a number of apps I want to control manually... But I don't know if that could have the opposite effect by making Startup Manager having to kill the app every time if it keeps on restarting... Or is it really killed once?

I think it depends on the App you try to keep from starting.
Apps can be started via various triggers. Some start only after boot, others start at certain times and others when you get an email. Layar for example starts every time when an App is installed.
Depending on the trigger which starts the App it's more or less usefull to kill it.

I uninstalled the StartupManager application, I noticed a significant speed increase (personal feeling)
So I must conclude the startup blocking applications are not advisable on ICS...

I wouldn't subscribe this in general. Every App is different to others. If an App only starts on boot automatically killing it does no harm (unless you want to use it...). But if it starts every second automatically killing it at start would make a big mess.
At least there are different possibilities to prevent autostart. Some Apps just kill the Apps. That's more a taskkiller. Others can figure out the reason why the App starts an block it when it wants to start. This is much more efficient.

Blocking system apps using autostarts

Hya
Just wanted to now witch system apps i can block using autostarts without stopping other apps doing their job. Im on jpm with voodoo lag fix enabled.
For better understanding on what i want to know here is an example:
On eclair i blocked gmail and calendar app from starting up and as a result i had to factory reset my phone. When i rebooted my phone i got so many force quit errors that i couldnt even browse to the autostart app and disable it.
Thanks in advance

I am using "Autostarts" since today... i would suggest, that only change one setting at a time to see, if
a. it works
b. the system still can be used
The app is very powerful, but you should know, what you are doing - i am still experimenting with certain settings
All the best,
ww
Thx for reply. And be really carefull, thats what i tried first but some things made my system crash after a few days when i downloaded a ne app what uses a service that the others didnt. Then i got kernel panic a few seconds after boot up (everytime) yso factory reset was needed.
Same is with google talk, u need that to be able to download things. I read it on xda, after factory reset again cause i would never had thought that talks got any thing to do with downloading

Well - i am still playing around with my settings... but for now, it works pretty good. It is very interesting to see, which apps will be called on certain events.
You can obtain control on the whole system, but every change regarding system and / or google apps can be dangerous indeed.
All the best,
ww

Applications?

Why don't all app's have a exit or close? Take Facebook for instance once, you load that app it stays open no way to close it and taking up battery. Is there a app so you can have theses close.

For crying out loud, search a little. You have a rooted device running Leo Droid and yet NO IDEA how Android manages applications? There are a plethora of task killers (-> google it) around, but also everybody knows they are not needed (-> google it).
Don't get me wrong, I know that not knowing stuff is a perfectly natural thing for a human being (after all, I am a teacher). But in this day and age of information being readily available at the click of your mouse (Google et consortes, this forum's "Search" button...) you still need someone to find/type in the answer to YOUR QUESTION so that you get it on a platter... Sigh.

P.S Do NOT use any of those task killers on your 2.1 or later versions of Android phone!
Cheers!
Concerning Facebook I totally understand his complain. Even with disabled notifications and "leaving" the app via backbutton it is listed as the highest battery-consumer (under*#*#4636#*#* --> battery usage while idle).
Since I didn't find a solution for that I uninstalled Facebook. But the other guys are right, as long as an app is programmed well, it does nothing in background and sleeps. No need to close apps or free RAM. Free RAM is always a sign of bad memory management in the OS so keep it filled up as it will speed up your phone!

Thanks facebook is high battery consumer, never used a task killer and I never will.

I have installed the facebook-app and it is no battery drainer for me.
Go to chat, then menu -> go offline.
if the app is closed then it won't sync up itself will it? (or if it does it'll just restart itself again).
say you have facebook to sync each hour - I thought the hour was from open...
so open check news feed, back out of it (facebook still running), after running for an hour it will check again and notify you if you have notifications on...
The only thing that does seem to annoy me slightly is when I open improved email it seems to open a whole host of other apps at the same time, including soundhound, stocks, maps, and about 10 other things... no idea why as it doesn't need those apps opening at all

[Q] should I use task killers?

I have about 68mb free on ram and I noticed that useless apps are still running (e. g. Facebook, office suit, and other useless apps). I try to force stop them via settings but they still turn on by them selfs. Also, I think this is the reason why my battery does run out quick since theres apps runnimg in the background. Should I get a task killer e
No.
Using a task killer is like playing god, let the phone kill the app.
And anyway, apps usually start again and consume more ram after you have killed them.

Keiran is spot on. Try un-installing apps you don't use (be careful with system apps) and you can also stop apps from running at boot with something like Autorun Manager
Remember to make a nandroid backup before you do anything, just in case it goes wrong

Task killers do more harm than good
Facebook and other apps will start anyway after "killing" them, maybe itz time for root and delete those apps from autorun?

I feel that the reason you use the task manager is only to fully quit programs/games which you KNOW will just eat up memory for no good reason, and won't reload and take up more memory. I've done this when using apps such as OnLive, where I want to kill the program compeletely so it doesn't freeze my game when I exit out. Yah, I could have ust quit the program completely, but sometimes things come up and..... I also use it to kill processes which OBVIOUSLY are causing the phone to hang. In short, I use it as a KILL command and I make sure to use it sparingly. I think of it as a super force quit option. If you think of a task manager as that, then you should be fine with one. I understand that people think that having almost no RAM free is the right way to go, and I somewhat agree, but I feel that there are times when you should free up the ram so you can replace a bad thing with a good one. I don't want my browser, whcih is lagging all over the place for some reason to take away ram from my game, my keyboard, or my voice recognition (I use it a lot). Nope, I could be better served killing the browser completely and instead loading up some programs I use more freqently, or perhaps just reloading the browser in general.
Beez thats what I meant. I just want to use it to only disable the autorun. Is there app that does that? My phone is rooted.
There's an app called Android Assistant that has an option to disable apps from starting up on boot, and so does Rom Toolbox. Rom Toolbox has a lot more options, but Android Assistant is easier to use.
I like using the Autostarts app. It costs a buck but it works wonderfully at removing programs/processes from boot

Just to confirm before I go ahead...(rooting)

Hi All
First of all, I just want to say a big thanks to everyone here who have contributed to this great site. It truly is a fantastic resource
So, I have just received my Note 10.1 2014 (P600) which I think is great. However, I need to root it so I can use ANY app in multi-window mode. So the question is, do I HAVE to root to enable ANY app to be used in multi-window mode? If so, I take it there is NO WAY of not tripping the KNOX counter? If that is the case, then I'll just have to bite the bullet and root...
When it comes to rooting my Note I can only see the following method as the way to go: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2490805. Am I correct in thinking that?
Just one more question while I'm here (!). Are there any advantages to using the 'Clean ROM'? I usually just stick with the stock ROM and use Nova Launcher.
Many thanks in advance

That seems like a tedious process. You will have to run every app you want through that program, then reinstall the result. I think it would save time in the long run to just go ahead and root your device and enable any app to be multiwindow.
Rooting your Note is simple. Takes only a few minutes. Then you can do so much more with root access. My question to you is why wouldn't you root?

I know that rooting lets you explore system areas that are normally not accessible, but is there a list or website that goes through what other things that you can do with root? Do these additional things require additional apps to do? Once you root, how does one enable apps to be multiwindow?

Well if you are rooted then you can do anything you want to do
I am using it to block ads with AdAway, make backups with TitaniumBackup, to controll the kernel with tricksterMod, add all Apps to the Multiwindow
with MW Apps Manager, make 4way multiwindow possible with MultiWindow Plus, hibernate apps with greenify, get rid of systemapps I dont use, to use the XposedFramework with a few Modules.

Yes, there is currently no way to root without triggering knox. The thread you found is the right one
CleanRom is an optimized Stock rom without bloatware. You can give it a try if you want, but remember to do a backup of your stock rooted rom. I am using CleanRom with the multitouch-fix-kernel and it performs very good.

1st thing I suggest you do is Google "Must have root apps" or "reasons to root your phone." It will get you started on the possibilities of rooting.
I agree with what benni posted. For starters this is what I have:
Specific to the Note series:
1) MW manager: Let's you set any app to be in the multiwindow mode. By default there are only a few apps that work in it.
2) Multiwindow Plus: Let's you have more than 2 apps open at once.
Valid on a lot of Android phones:
1) Xposed Installer: This is a framework and does nothing by itself. What it does is let you download "modules" inside of itself that give your phone other features.
2) Winam Xposed (requires Xposed): Let's you customize a bunch of phone features. For example, the flashlight or "torch" option lets you press the Volume Up key for 1.5 seconds when the screen is off to turn on your camera's LED light to have a flashlight. Then touch Volume Down to turn it off, all without having to run a flashlight app. Or you can enable 4 way rotation which will make all your apps rotate in all directions.
3) Ad Away: Blocks a lot of in-app ads and YouTube ads too I believe. This app is not on the Google Play Store. You will need a 3rd party store. I got it from F-Droid store.
4) Titanium Backup: Let's you back up data from your phone and apps. You can use this with a syncing app so if you have multiple Android devices your data is synced. If you play a game on 1 device, you can backup your save to the other device so you will start at the same location.
5) XPrivacy (requires Xposed): You can deny permissions to individual apps. For example, you can block the Facebook app from having access to your phone, contacts, and SMS messages. It will give it fake info instead of just blocking it, as some apps force close when you block permissions.
6) Greenify: Highly rated battery saver.
7) Six-axis controller: Let's you use your PS3 controller to control your phone for games. Doesn't work on all devices. They have a free version in the store that you can test to see if your phone works with the controller first, then they have a paid version to actually use.
And so much more!

Well, incredibly IT WORKED! :victory: Now I can multi-window (and even have multiple windows of the same app running) the apps that weren't available before.
The only reason I didn't want to root if possible was the KNOX situation. The tablet's only a couple of months old and it bugged me that I will most likely lose 22 months of the warranty thanks to Samsung's brilliant idea of utilising KNOX (which according to reports is a fairly naff security system anyway). Now my Note 10.1 can do what my Note 8 does and I'll simply install Nova, and life is good. Hopefully, in the near future some bright spark may be able to develop a way to root without tripping KNOX...
Thanks a bunch for all the input, guys
Nice to hear that it worked

Amazon's app store does not show my Apps library

Hi,
If I want to list my own apps via amazon's app store nothing happens. My apps are not been listed but instead the start screen of the Amazon's app store is still shown. I deleted already all data and deinstalled all app store's updates. But it will not work.
Do you have any hint for me how I can list my apps?
Go to your app drawer
Look at the top left
Switch to cloud
This shows all your owned apps
Hm, you certainly mean the amazon launcher, right? Iam using Nova and I have no clue how I can get back...
Gesendet von meinem SM-N9005 mit Tapatalk
I think you can only access all apps if you revert to stock launcher NOT from third party launcher.
Really? What a strange OS. Is there any alternative? I have root, maybe I can do something with it to work around this problem? E. g. installing amazon underground, but this did not work as stated in a parallel thread here

install Home Switch from the google play store, with that you can easy switch between your launcher and amazon launcher, when you need to access your amazon app library.
Ok, thanks for all your tips. Nevertheless, there are more such annoyances and therefore I installed yesterday cm11. It runs as hell
