Does Google wallet work using an MVNO? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I'm thinking of buying a galaxy nexus, but I'm on at&t cell provider called straight talk (mvno).
The only question in my mind right now is if I will be able to use google wallet under the MVNO
It would be great if someone was in my same circumstances and give me some information. Any help would do.
Thanks in advance

Google Wallet is just an app and its not Network/Carrier driven.

I understand that, but there was an article in engadget.com about it working on Tmobile, and they seemed surprised.
It COULD have been cause they got it from the Tmobile google play store (different networks have different play stores)
I just wanted to make sure, that I could use the NFC before I buy the phone

Google Wallet was blocked in the past in the store. However, after it's installed, I haven't heard anything about its usage being blocked in any way.

It's not blocked in the US for the GSM version as of yesterday.

so can I sum it up by saying that Google wallet is dependant on hardware only, and that if it works on one (US) Carrier, it should work on any other?
Please correct any inaccuracies in that statement. Please point out ANY inaccuracies.

That is incorrect, cause skyrocket has NFC, icecream sandwich (or legitimate GB) , and can install apps. This is still not enough to use google wallet. It's said that the reason is, that it doesn't have a "secure element"

I have a Galaxy Nexus with Straight Talk. And it doesn't update the balance or show card info, or neither work at the terminal when I type using Straight Talk Data network.
However it works fine over wifi.
This is what I've learned from my experience. Yes theoretically it should work. But it doesn't. If anyone has tried and it works, then please share how did you work it out.

I've had ST for several months and Wallet works flawlessly - with Wi-Fi and with mobile data

Your problem is most likely your apn is not set up correctly. When I first started using wallet with H2O wireless I had much the same problem. After deleting the apn's that auto populated and creating new ones with the correct settings my problems went away. I have since tried red pocket and Tmobile prepaid as well and have had no issues using wallet on any of them.

Hi there,
Would you guys be kind enough to grab the right APN settings and post it here for me. I have factory Reset my device twice and still failed. So I'm hoping its only a APN problem only as well.
By the way I have ATT version of SIM Card from straight talk

You sure you have NFC enabled and a battery that comes with NFC capabilities? The root-device-not-supported is just a warning. I have been able to successfully purchase things at BP, PetCo, and several gas stations since provisioning has been restored. =/
Also... check out this thread.
I was in San Antonio last week and used Wallet all over the place. Rooted Verizon Gnex with Liquid rom. I even got a soda at The Alamo from one of the many vending machines, I also have the warning at the top of wallet app.

NFC is definitely enabled and I'm using the OEM extended battery. The phone and app actually do act like their working. The app shows that the payment has been sent and everything. The terminal and phone both beep. But the payment never goes through. I didn't have these issues before the "device not supported" warning for rooted devices. I thought it was just a problem with the Google prepaid card, but my credit card connected to GW doesn't work either. Of course, when GW failed and I swiped my actual credit card, everything was fine. Very frustrating.
The device not supported banner is simply a disclaimer that you understand the risks of using the app with the rooted device, since the re-provisioning it does nothing to limit the functionality of the app, I would suggest doublechecking your settings and such, make sure you hold the phone on the pad until the transaction completes
used mine (it's rooting running AOKP) at mcdonalds over the weekend and at a mapco. works fine.
some of the locations might have the NFC reader but its not hooked up properly. did you swipe the CITI card using NFC or regular swipe?

+1 on the Jack N Box being a Hit or Miss. The local one by me has the paypass system, its just not hooked up. I talked to management and she said she asked for it to be fixed but was told there is not enough demand to warrant fixing
Mine has been working fine since provisioning was restored. Rooted 4.0.4 , no issues using it at all here ( rite aid, wendys, mcd).. If it's not working most likely an issue with your handset or the paypass terminal, around here the one mcdonalds it works at the other it doesn't because of the terminal it's definitely NOT because of the unsupported device message

I did some testing and looked like a idiot doing it but I found that if you actually place your phone on it horizontally it works every time you have to be touching not hovering over it then you enter pin and do the same thing hasn't failed me yet.

guys the fact of the matter is its more or less hit or miss. i had it work at bestbuy one time but then it didn't the next time at a different register. I tried a radioshack today and it didn't work and for places like cvs and McDonalds need to have it enabled for the register. The best thing to do so you dont look incredibly stupid (at least for self checkout counters) is to run the phone over the nfc area first and see if the phone responds at all, if it does then proceed to start ringing stuff up. for places like bestbuy and radioshack, this isnt the case as they must also work it on their side. Today at radioshack
i had the idiot tell me to contact my provider as there was a problem on my end since i repeatedly got paypass merchant action and yet i went straight to cvs where it worked right away. so first you must check to see if the nfc is enabled on the register, and then you must hope/make sure that they allow it to work on their end. the fact of the matter is that I am hoping/praying that the new iphone has nfc enabled so it becomes al ot more wide spread.
What are the requirements to make it work? I have the Vz Gnex, rooted, with stock 4.02
Do I just need to find the apk? Or do I need to run a specific ROM?
Thanks
EDIT: I installed the APK, since I received the free $10, I am going to go out and try it.
after updating a rom or installing a new rom my google wallet stopped working. All I did was reinstall it. ever transaction work without a problem after that.

[Q][Oddball] Google Wallet Can't Add Prepaid

Hello
I recently got my Galaxy Nexus and I am trying to use Google Wallet but running into a problem I haven't seen yet (A search revealed 1 other person with the problem but was able to resolve by wiping data from the app. This didn't work for me.)
I am running 4.0.4 AKOP build 29. I am unlocked and rooted. Wallet version 1.1-R52v7.
The app installs just fine. I have it linked to my google account. However, I cannot add a Google Prepaid card. It attempts to add for ~ 1min, then says, "Error adding card. Try again later."
I tried uninstalling / reinstalling. I tried the previous version. I also tried wiping the data from the app itself. Nothing has worked so far
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance.
Anyone? I'm very anxious to use GWallet!
You need to use a US credit card. View the adding funds thread for instructions that usually work.

I have this banner. I simply used superSU to get rid of it, so the phone it thinks it does not have root. However, with/without superSU it still does not allow me to add a prepaid card

What do you mean Samsung's default number? I have came to the general conclusion that it something to do with the Money Network. They are blocking my phone, my IMEI, from connecting. I was able to login with my Google account on another phone just perfectly and get my prepaid card.

A while back I flashed a ROM to my Nexus S that corrupted my nv_data.bin file which in turn changed my original IMEI to Samsung's generic's. (004999010640000)
After that happened I was unable to re-use Wallet because Money Network's service will not allow that IMEI to work in their system, for obvious reasons.
Check the IMEI on your phone's back cover or box and compare it to the one in your Android's system. Hopefully they match. There's no solutions for the Nexus S currently. You'd have to send it back to Samsung. Good luck.
This happened to me even after Google fixed the provisioning of the Prepaid Card. I just kept Removing and Adding the Card. Eventually, after a couple of days it fixed itself. Try Resetting the App, Deleting Data, uninstalling, and then re-installing.
Money network finally got it working for me. I believe they did a master reset. It now works

So I'm having trouble getting Wallet setup on my Galaxy Nexus...works fine on my Nexus 7.
I can setup the app, but when it says 'setup required' under the card, it always fails to add card. See attached photo.

I use it on unlocked GSM on T-Mobile.
Right! I know. So I'm getting this error I posted about whenever I try to setup. Makes NO sense whatsoever. I've reset my phone like 10 times and doesn't work. Tried adding different cards, etc. Tried to setup without my sim card inserted even! Still no go.
just set mine up. GSM unlocked phone from google. Unsupported Device Policy message on top of screen during set up. Set up went ok, it picked up my card number automatically. "Learn more" next to unsupported device msg linked to message:
"Some users may disable important security mechanisms in order to gain system-level "root" access to their device. We strongly discourage doing so if you plan to use Google Wallet. We are unable to support devices with unatuhorized operating systems as the security layers of the device may be limited."
After setup it starts and appears to be functioning, but nothing to try it on. Still has the unsupported device msg also.
Unlocked and rooted my phone, running stock 4.1.
So some of you have actually made purchases with wallet? I have tried at different stores like Best Buy and Home Depot and it connects, but won't let me make my purchase. I have that $50 from buying the phone I need to spend, but can't get it to work anywhere. Anyone have any suggestions?

I think the Wallet guys have no clue what they are doing, support-wise. It's a massive fail imo
Just installed Wallet on my unlocked, rooted Galaxy Nexus. Everything went fine. Credit card added with no problem. Says I'm all set up, but haven't used it yet. I get the "Unsupported device" message but I'll believe that if and when it fails. Note that if you have certain parts of Google apps frozen, uninstalled, or blocked with a firewall, Wallet won't install. PS: Take anything a sales rep says with a grain of salt.

Google Wallet for Note II

I recently found that Google Wallet is available on Google Play, so I installed it.
When opening it says that my device is not supported. I thought I had NFC, what gives?
Has anyone gotten Google Wallet to work with the Note II?
NFC is carrier dependant. I don't believe AT&T has approved that on their network.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda premium
google wallet is carrier dependant and is not supported even though we have nfc. ATT Verizon and tmo are all pushing for isis not google wallet and isis is in trial in texas and arizona. There is currently no way to enable it on this device because the secure element is locked.
I was in Austin about a week ago and they had a lot of isis billboards around town. They are definitely shutting out google wallet for isis. It seems wrong to me to do that to Google.
carriers want a piece of the pie thats why. that is the ONLY reason they are doing this

Yes also partly correct, Carriers have disabled Google Wallet in attempt to push ISIS, probably a contract deal.
I re-tweeted a comment I came across a few weeks ago on twitter to try and make some noise on this issue. I think if you want wallet, you should craft your own or retweet this.

I actually already tweeted similar today, in response to an att tweet about ISIS. ATT supporting ISIS is one thing, forcing us to ONLY be able to use it and nothing else is another. Its ridiculous.

When I first got home with my Note II, I was using some native application, and a pop-up occurred that asked me did I want to setup a Google Wallet account. I remember being really happy to see that. Being stupid, I chose not to do it, because I didn't know if it was the exact same Google Wallet found on Google Play. Just wanted to make sure. So I declined. When I attempted to install the app from Play, that's when I got the incompatibility message others got. And so far I haven't seen the prompt to setup Google Wallet from my phone, again. I wonder what would have happened had I tried it that way?

Google wallet is the name of the "method" that you use to pay for Google Play apps (but it isn't the Google wallet app). It probably asked you that when you setup because you don't have a credit card associated with your Gmail account.

That's exactly the case. I wish google had as much pull as apple when it came to OS specific stuff. The carriers have to much power
Just a quick "thought" when they got the 4g lte spectrum werent they told they are not allowed to block certain apps to not be allowed to be used on their network? If i remember correctly verizon just got super sued for that exact reason.

I thought it was good to go, but after turning on NFC and downloading the app, it says not compatible.
Which is weird since its an unlocked phone.
Do you need to turn on NFC while downloading? Did you try downloading with NFC off?
Maybe either the frequency or software might not be compatible.

Is anyone else having an issue with NFC. Mine wont switch on. When i tick the box, it automatically unticks. I did copy down a load of app data so maybe i copied over a system one automatically. Any ideas?
Edit: Uninstalled the re-installed Google Wallet. Went in to apps -> NFC service. Cleared all the data and stopped the service. Rebooted the phone and it worked fine. Chose Google Wallet as wallet provider, turned the screen off, then turned it back on and now i'm back to the same problem.

Fantastic. Thanks very much.
Edit: Worked perfectly. Now i'm hoping someone creates a flashable fix for Google Wallet. I dont like manually fiddling with prop files.

Me too, followed the instructions on the Z forum @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40897879#post40897879
The only thing was I left the build.prop with the Galaxy Nexus settings .. changing them back to the Xperia entries broke Wallet after a reboot.

why u can't change it back??! I can change back to sony without problem
there is one thing after install wallet don't update from market.
No idea, each time I revert back to the Sony build.prop after a reboot I get the Google Wallet message "Your device is not supported". When I use the Nexus build.prop is works fine. Odd that I'm getting this error.
strange!! I am c6506 tmobile
So, by all the posts here, Google Wallet does not work without some hackery? I find that interesting, considering it seems that the phone intentionally supported it. I'd love to know who dropped the ball here, Sony or Google. I would love to have Google Wallet working on my ZL, but I refuse to root my phone and alter the build.prop to get it there.
It's definitely Google's fault here. They update Google Wallet every so often with new handset support. Maybe in the next update...maybe.

I kind of figured that would be the case. I hope Google decides to support the ZL as having a non-carrier branded phone (and thus choices like Google Wallet) was half of the allure of the ZL for me.
