Just got my new GNex and wanted to know if this is normal - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I noticed that the grays on my screen sometimes turn to violet for no reason at all? Does this happen to you guys as well? My speakers are also barely audible, I had an SGS2 and the loud speakers were very loud, are there mods or roms that address this issue that give them a little boost?
Overall an excellent phone, easily the best performing phone I have had.

The grays on my screen have never ever turned violet, that seems a bit weird. The speakers I mine are also pretty good, I would maybe take it back.

I noticed this when I first got my phone and my battery was almost empty (3% or less). If I power on my screen the grays would be fine but after I turn it off and on again it would turn violet. I updated to 4.0.4 and so far I have not been able to replicate the issue.
My loudspeakers are just extremely soft. I can barely hear anything while watching a movie, youtube or listening to music with the loudspeakers. Are you sure this is not normal?? Is there any way for me to test this with an app or something?

Download Volume+ from the Google play market. You can definitely see a huge difference when tweaking the speaker volume. As for the screen turning violet, it could be a screen defect.

Downloaded the free one and it worked perfectly. Does this app affect the headphones as well?
Another quirk I found with my GN is that every time something crashes or an error occurs the phone automatically asks me to send an email to report. Is this normal? Is there any way to turn this off? Do custom roms take out this nuisance?
Here is the email:
Yakju-user 4.0.4 imm761 330937

(sent from bugmailer)
and it attached a text file and a screenshot
*never mind it seems that it's a bug report generated by pressing down the volume up down adn power button at the same time

purple screen when brightness turned all the way down isnt normal, its seems to be a common issue but screen should not be purple(violet)

Yes my screen is purple too and I have this popping sound when audible touch tones are checked. Will call Google tomorrow for a replacement.

I would go back to the store to get a new one.. the screen is not supposed to be purple. as for the volume+ app.. I'm a bit frightened by it. Okay the speaker is kinda soft when I'm being called, but the speakers were designed and calibrated for those volumes.
overriding that an break things...

Ok I finally got to reproduce the issue. If I open my messaging app on a place with low light condition or at night time (display brightness automatically goes down), the top gray bar which has the contact name number call sign and attach sign turns violet but strangely enough the lower gray bar which holds the new message icon has a lighter shade and displays the color correctly.
If I revert to settings and disable auto brightness and max it out and go back to messaging it becomes gray again. I also tried it on auto brightness on a normally lit room and it's fine. Anyone else with the same issue?
I've used the SGS before and remember that white's on my screen would be a little more grayish/yellowish. This must be an issue caused by pentile displays. I was beginning to wonder if it was my eyesight that was failing me lol!
Does this happen to your units as well?

How strong is the vibration on the Epic? And Q about the notification led

I'm not sure if the vibration is working on my phone, or not. I have haptic feed back on, and the vibration sensitivity set to the far right. I have also set the vibration on key press to on, as well. I'm not able to feel the vibration at all. I just want to know whether the vibration is strong on the phone, or whether it's very weak, due to the thinness of the phone.
Also, I've noticed my notification led does not light up. Watching some videos of the phone, it shows the led lit up in the upper right corner. I can see the spot for the led when I angle the phone certain ways, but it doesn't come on when charging, or when I get notifications.
I did buy the phone used, and it looks like it may have been dropped a couple of times (screen is in perfect shape, but the outer rim of the phone has marks on it, on the corners), and am thinking maybe the led and the vibration may have been casualties of these falls.
Everything else is fine, and I'm used to not having a notification led, since the Nexus S didn't have one, but I miss the vibration when I type, or get a phone call/text/email/etc.

I'll assume you are on a stock, or stock-ish (Calkulin's for example) ROM.
The vibration is definitely noticeable, and you should be getting LED notifications.
I would suggest possibly using ODIN and going back to the stock rooted ROM or flashing one of the fine ROMs in the development sub-forum and see if that improves your problem.
I can see why the vibration function would break -- dislodged vibrator motor. As far as the LED is concerned, there should be no reason why the LED doesn't work under normal circumstances.
Hope this helps!
I should add that I'm using sfhub's stock rooted EL29 rom. I am currently not running a custom recovery at this time.
I had the same problem, backed up, but before I restored to stock, I went into the clockwork and selected the, "fix permissions" been fine for almost two weeks.

So strong my gf likes it more than me.. Yikes!

4.0.4 Update - System Sound Clicks SUPER Quiet

I cannot hear the touch clicks for system sounds when clucking icons or settings etc. Its super quiet unless I put the speaker right against my ear. I'm not talking about the keyboard clicks, those are fine. Anyone having the same issue?
Edit: lock screen sound is effected too, lock and unlock sound used to work. But its barely audible.
Also I notice after time my screen sensitivity goes to crap and touches don't register easily. Lock the screen fixes this for a short while. But it happens again after a while.
All my sounds even screen unlock screen off clicks are barely audible just like they were stock .1 and .2. No foul.

OK thanks, so it seems normal.
But my bigger issue is the touchscreen sensitivity. It keeps getting weak and doesn't register presses. Have to lock the screen to reset it. Grrr so annoying. Happens every few minutes.
Can't say I have seen that happen.
As for screen clicks, anything louder would be obnoxious.
My opinion is that UI audible feedback is significantly more quiet. Volume level for media and ringer/notifications set to max level and still can barely hear it. A regression for sure I think.

Last time I had that was on my HTC HD2 (Leo) and after a while it didnt do anything anymore and I had to turn it in for repairs, I know its a different phone, but the symptoms are alike, so just my 2 cents

Screen off after headset call ends.

Every time I end a call while on a headset, whether bt or wired, and using the phone while talking, the screen shuts off. I don't remember this happening on other phones. Is there a setting for this? If so I can't find it anywhere.

Can you elaborate a bit more? Does it just time out? Is it off at the end of the call, and you can't make it come back on?
Your phone will use the proximity sensor, when it's within proximity of your face. Aside from that, it will use the set screen timeout settings. If this is a timeout issue, change those settings, under your display options
If this is an issue with the proximity sensor, and the screen not turning back on as the call ends, then simply place your hand over the the sensor and remove it. The screen will turn back on.
I mean if I'm playing a game while on a call with a headset, whether bt or wired, and the call ends the screen turns off. Even though I'm playing a game or browsing, what ever. The screen turns back on fine, just annoying and inconvenient interruption to what ever I'm doing.

Same thing happens to me, but not all the time. Like when I am listening to a message and wants to press 7 to erease it and I find the display does not turn on as it should. I think this could be a bug related to the proximity sensor.

sort of annoying but I just hit the volume keys to get the screen back on...
I guess the most annoying situation, and this happened last night. Using navigator, I took a call on my bt headset, hung up the call and not only did it not return to my nav screen it immediately turned off.
I don't know if this is a bug or a setting, maybe a build.prop thing?

I can't pull up screenshots on my phone while I'm at work but in Application Settings under Development there should be an option to "Stay Awake" while on charger...it comes in handy when using Navigator/Waze. Downside; On GB it tends to overheat the battery but simply pressing the Power/Lock key will override the settings and turn off the screen.

That won't fix the problem of the phone going off after a call ends though. Every time a call ends my screen turns off, even of I'm using it during a call.

Anyone experiencing this? This is really the only that I don't like on the SXI so far. Is there anything in the build.prop that could change this ?
This just ticks me off.
Sent from Rooted LT28at with ICS.
Looks like I fixed it by adding the following tweak to the build.prop:
#
#Disable blackscreen issue
#
ro.lge.proximity.delay=25
mot.proximity.delay=25
I had to edit the build.prop through Flashtool, none of the on-device editors would save the changes.
It fixed speaker phone, but not headphone issue.

New SIII (former HOX) - Screen questions, etc.

So, I'm coming from an AT&T HTC One XL and I have a handful of questions. The screen and the camera on the HOXL were borderline perfection in my opinion, but the phone had a few flaws led me to an SIII.
1) The auto brightness on the SIII is laughable. The HTC One X was seamless and smooth with its auto brightness adjustment, and I never once turned auto brightness off. I have had the SIII for a day and I cannot stand it. Are there any solutions out there for the jerkiness and delay of the SIII's auto brightness function? If not, what do most of you keep your brightness at? Right now, I'm finding ~70% to be fair. Anything below that is a sacrifice and I don't do sacrifices for battery life.
2) Pentile.... I cannot stop noticing the pentile. Granted, I am coming from perfection in terms of screen quality I was hoping it wouldn't be this noticeable. To exacerbate the issue, I use my phone an awful lot as an e-reader. My eyes were playing games with me while using the Kindle App last night (same settings as One X). I kept blinking as I thought it was a result of my eyes, but it was the screen. The font simply does not have smooth, sharp edges. Will my eyes get used to this or is this going to be a constant battle?
3) I recall a setting on my GS2 where I could sync up phone call ringtone volume and notification volume when I adjusted the volume on the side of the phone. I did not find this setting on the SIII. Does one exist? I
4) One the One X, when I had headphones in, notifications and phone calls would be pumped through the headphones instead of the loudspeaker. Is there a setting I can enable where ringtone and notification tone flow through headphones when attached?
Thanks!

1- I personally use a modded auto brightness but you can probably find a app that will do a better job at it than stock firmware. I believe there are some in here as well (in the app section of XDA).
2- Never had a android that didn't have a SAMOLED screen so I don't know what difference you're talking about. Although, I use my phone quite a lot as well and my eyes don't get tired. Keep in mind that screen brightness too high = damages your eyes, too low = hard on your eyes.
3- Settings -> Sound -> Volumes -> check link volume.
4- That should be on by default. If it's not, there's either a app that changed it or you did yourself.
Btw, what firmware are you running?

3 - Don't see this setting...
4 - Ya know what, maybe I did. The only setting I changed was unchecking "connecting earphones will enable audio applications in quick panel" in the Accessory menu as I didn't like all the apps being displayed in the notification area. I wouldn't think those are related though...
EDIT: I'm on stock ATT 4.1.1
EDIT 2: Just tried checking the box I unchecked for the audio applications and notifications still play through loudspeaker..

Questions From a Potential Buyer

My main 2 concerns about the m7 that eventually led to me returning it for the Note 3 were:
- Overheating. My m7 was always hot to the touch, even when just browsing the Internet. Has this issue been fixed in the m8?
- This one is not a classic complaint, but it annoyed me personally. The lowest volume setting on the m7 was way too loud. When I would lay down at night time and, say, watch a YouTube video the lowest volume setting was always too loud and become annoying at night during sleeping hours. Hopefully the m8s volume pallete has expanded.
Also can the button bar be collapsed when playing games to make everything full screen? Is there an option in settings?
Thanks.

I don't know this necause I still don't have the phone but if not there will surely be such an option with custom ROMs
I had the HTC DNA which shared the same problems you mentioned about the m7. I played CoC for 2 hours last night and there was a noticeable difference in the lack of heat. I don't think it ever got hotter than body temperature through an Otterbox Defender. The DNA was a mini-furnace in the same type of case.
I watched a quick youtube video after we went to bed and it was barely audible on the lowest volume setting and didn't wake my wife on lvl 3.
Yes the bar disappears when you go full screen. You have to drag from the speaker inwards to make it reappear.

This is a feature in Android 4.4, so yes the on screen keys+notification bar can disappear in games, videos, and YouTube.

As far as overheating - I know what you mean. My M7 and my DNA both had that issue, and thus far I haven't had that problem with the M8 yet. It always seems to be fairly cool regardless of what I'm doing.
I had the same volume issue with the M7 - even on the lowest volume setting, I'd always feel like it was too loud at night. The M8 has a huge volume range for its speakers, ranging from barely being able to hear it to people on other floors being able to hear it.
When you're on a fullscreen application (videos, games, etc), the button bar collapses automatically (not sure if there's even anything you can do to prevent it).
