[Q] Roaming Questions - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

At home in the subarb I get crappy sprint service, specifically texting and voice. It takes 5 minutes for a text to come from my mom's ATT phone to me on sprint, and the same situation takes only 5 seconds while roaming on Verizon. For voice, I only have one ring to pick up the phone on sprint vs. four or five rings on Verizon (it only misses one ring). I've tried it many times, so there is NO argument! When I'm at college in downtown Pittsburgh, the service is very comparable to Verizon and I have no issues whatsoever. From searching the forums, I've found out that the voice you use while roaming on Verizon is limited to your anytime minutes (I have 1500), and your data is limited to 300 mb using 1x. Now the problem is that I'm home for summer and I'm sick of the service already. For the past day I have been roaming on Verizon and it feels like I have gotten a whole new phone all over again. Everything works correctly everywhere and it's phenomenal. My texts go through instantly and I'm missing no calls. My question is, if I stay under 1500 minutes (I never even make any phone calls anyways, it would take me months to hit 1500) and under 300 mb of data (I plan on simply using sprint 4g or wifi at all times) until I go back to school in 3 months, will I run into any issues? Is there any limit on the time that you spend roaming or the amount of text messages you send/receive?

Roaming minutes are counted as your plan.minutes, no limit on texts. There's a PRL hack that locks your phone into roaming with 3g speeds. Data is kinda iffy, some people.have gotten dropped from.sprint from.excessive data roaming after from a few months to a year.
Also Google the app roam control, its not in the play store but its very useful for people in your situation.
If I was you I'd just lock in roaming and let sprint eventually drop you, sell your ET4g and get a phone from a better carrier.

agreed.. in the same situation.. ive had roam control for a looong time but just recently put it to use.. im in phoenix az and i cant get a signal in my house unless i use roam control to force roam.. had to for the last few weeks since we dont have internet right now and cant use the airrave..

Call Sprint and get an Airave - provided are allowed another line on your account and have an internet connection at home. Explain your situation (if your school address is your billing address, change it to your where you are now) and they will provide one free(ish). There is a nominal admin fee each month. If the first CSR you talk to tries to charge you fr the unit just ask to be transferred to someone else in customer retention, you'll succeed in getting it for free.
I was in this situation where I was roaming in my house. Many of the CSRs told me it was not possible because, "the voice and data coverage is very good at your address". Which is true looking at the map on their website, but far from the reality. I used Roam Control from the market and within 3 months received a letter telling me to curb my roaming or be terminated - the only plus would be the termination would be ETF free. To be clear, the roaming agreement is 800 minutes OR a majority of minutes for voice and 300mb OR a majority of use. So even if you stay below 500 minutes, but they're all roaming you are still violating their terms.
If you call them today your problem should be solved, airave in hand, before the end of the week. If you have any trouble PM me and I'll try to help. Good luck.

I have found that PRL hack, and I do not want to use verizons 3g to prevent using too much data, especially since I have unlimited sprint 4g and wifi.
I am using roam control to force roaming.

Sprint Roaming Letter - read/understand/adjust

Many people have complained, but no one seems to post what the letter looks like or what it actually says.
Sprint cell phone plans are not truly unlimited, but they are generous. Roaming is capped at 300mb or a majority of data usage and 800 minutes in a month. On network usage is a little tricky. They will let you use A LOT, but there is a point where they'll send you a letter for excessive usage. If you're like the guy that got caught using 100GB to tether and host MW3, of course you'll get a similar letter. But I would think you could easily use 50GB on-network and they's let it slide.
Attached is a copy of the letter I got from Sprint last month for roaming. I was under the impression, as it is advertised and listed in my bill, that ALL data usage was unlimited. I sent an email to Dan Hesse's CSR team and they called me back to explain the truth. The truth being, even though it's listed as unlimited in ads and on your bill, you in fact signed TOS agreeing to this limitation.
If you are ever having trouble with the regular CSRs, have a horrible experience, or feel you were wronged or not listened to, send an email to [email protected](DON'T ABUSE IT OR THEY'LL TAKE IT AWAY!). They have more authority and will call you and try to resolve the issue.
Look, we've got a pretty sweet deal when it comes to data. If you get one of these letters, you're probably doing something you shouldn't. I was and I got the warning. Now I've adjusted my usage to not whore the network and everyone's happy.
FYI: I was using Roam Control when I visited my girlfriend on weekends because she lives in the sticks and Sprint coverage sucks. And if your coverage sucks at your house ask for an Airave, it's free.
This ultimately IS false advertising and I am sure that at some point Sprint will get into trouble for it.

Nah, watch the commercial or read the ads and look at the fine print on the bottom. There's a phrase in there that makes it NOT false advertising... "terms and conditions apply"

Sprint is awesome and their policies are very consumer/hacker friendly. Dont ruin a good thing for the rest of us please.

People are confused and upset because, for one, who reads the 10,000 words of the TOS? And, if you look on your bill under roaming it list usage/unlimited. This is my current bill as an example:

Even if sprint changed the verbage people wouldnt get it. Even if sprint spelled it out in big letters during their ads I feel that the average consumer who is not one of us on these forums will still no doubt about it here unlimited and be completely oblivious to the other obvious stated facts. Because other than the obvious facts, the average consumer is ignorant and wants what they want when they want it their way. I beleive we live in a Mcdonalds way now. Have it your way. People are seriously misguided in this day and age. /end rant

Honestly, reading the various threads here, even the average person {who posts about it, anyway} on these forums seems pretty ignorant when it comes to roaming.
The main problem is people don't know what on-network roaming is. I've posted at least three times over the past month why Sprint can say they have unlimited roaming *on-network* and what on-network roaming is vs off-network roaming.

No, that is wishful thinking on your part.
If you watch the commercials, they say unlimited roaming *on the Sprint network*.
If you don't know the difference between on-network and off-network roaming, do a bit of research.
I agree with you that it sucks, wholeheartedly, they just aren't making any false claims.

If someone is on the home network, not doing anything illegal.but.has excessive.use for w.e reason sprint is saying they will.send a warning letter or.terminate service.. At my work i.saw the other.day a customer got.susp because.an old lady managed to.use 13GB in 3 days.on a 5GB limit and she said she only downloaded.Microsoft office and the.rest of.the weekend.she was gone.so.it.was.impossible, sprint, and any carrier knows what is normal.. People need to.understand, your mobile data is.no.subsitute.for.home internet lol, people use.your heads and.dont.abuse. It or soon we might not.have the option to.use.more.data then all other carriers

You can roam on network.. Sprint doesnt.have towers.across every square inch of the country.. They can be roaming on network with sprints roaming partners, or.be.completely.off sprints network.and.roaming on a non roaming partners network.. Also, if you notice on the.bills, there is home area, then extended home area.. extended means you are withing the sprint coverage area but not on sprints tower.. Can be a number of factors like weather, sprint tower down, or mayne even location.. It all depends. Its confusing but really.not.once you understand the.cellular lingo

Say you live in Milwaukee, a Sprint service area. You purchased your phone and your plan there. Then you travel to Miami, another Sprint service area. You are now "roaming" on-network because you are out of your HOME service area, but still on the Sprint network.
Now, let's say you travel to visit family in northern Wisconsin in the middle of the forest. The only reception you get is Alltel (owned by Cellular One, I believe). You are now roaming off-network.
This is a holdover from the early days of cell phones when networks were NOT nationwide, but rather were region-wide.

Yea, like u.s. Cellular is still a regional carrier with nationwide coverage.. Anywhere outside of there network is roaming, anywhere you leave your home area to another USCc region you are roaming in the extended home service area since you are still on there network.. In Florida where there is no uscc, your roaming off network but are still provided coverage through there roaming partners

When I spoke with them on the phone they listed my usage for December as a time I exceeded the limit, which was 467MB. This was listed in my account as "467,272KB/Unlimited Remaining Unlimited". I think that's reason to ask them for clarification.
I acknowledged that forcing my phone to roam was wrong, and I made adjustments, but I barely got any battery life with 1 signal bar and 2G data.
But if you want out of your contract scott free, go for it. They even offered to credit my last full month.
EDIT: I spent 4 days in DC last month, obviously not my home network area, and my Sprint 3G Roaming remained at 0KB. That seems to prove home vs on-network roaming has nothing to do with it. How hard is it for them to be up front that Sprint 3G Roaming = off-network roaming?

When I got the letter in the beginning of Feb, they listed December as a month I exceeded the limit, and I only had 75MB of roaming data that month (or something like that, I forget exactly now). I asked them how in the world 75MB of roaming data exceeded the 300MB cap, and they told me that I had only used 100MB of on-network data (I spend most of my life on WiFi between work and home), so 75MB was MORE than half of my data usage, therefore a violation of TOS.
So basically, I'm being punished for actually staying OFF their network entirely by using WiFi.
I would have told them to go ahead and kick me off, except that Verizon and AT&T don't have coverage where I need it on my land up north, so they aren't an option.
I *DO* agree with you that their online usage summary really should have a separate data point called "off network roaming - Used: 126,304 of 307,200"

My guess is he is manually punching in words and hitting '.' instead of {space} by accident.
That's why I like Swype.
This again? Please stop. I have no sympathy for people who don't read/understand the agreement they sign. For the last time, the unlimited term is used with terms & conditions and applies to the data usage of the Sprint device on the Sprint network.
Continuing to post/argue over what unlimited means *to you* vs. what is in black and white is a waste of forum bandwidth.

so I see that excessive roaming will prompt sprint to give you the boot with no warning but how does it work with family plans. if one person on the plan roams too much does the entire account get canceled or just that one phone number?

I got a letter from Sprint myself after I messed with my RTSP and HTTPD server settings. I read an article about speeding up network access like at my desk at work on an AT&T (roaming) network. After about 2 weeks of enjoying better coverage and speeds, I got a love letter from Sprint.
At first I had no clue, then I remembered I had messed with those settings. Turns out I was ONLY roaming with them. So now I put them back to stock and no issues with Sprint.
Actually, on Calkulins latest v1.2 ICS Rom, with the FC18 modem, I get 3G at my work where I only had a 1X network data connection before!

Different devices, different areas, and different radios all play a part in your signal strength. There is not a one-size-fits-all, so try different modems, using each one a couple of days, and keep an eye on your signal strength.

Wait...what does roaming mean in this case? I am going to get this phone soon, and I have been out of the loop for this community for a few months now. Is roaming a term for something mod related or does it just mean being in a roaming area.
My concern is that when I had the Epic, I rode the subway everyday and every 3 seconds my phone says "You are roaming" and does the annoying sound and screen, have they disabled this?

It just means you are using another carrier's tower, not Sprint's... The default Sprint proxy settings on the phone are fine, but you can hack them and get into trouble if you do this.
I know this thread is somewhat old, but I wanted to share that the second letter I recently received from Sprint was one informing me that my account WILL be terminated as of July 17th.
I tried numerous times to explain that when I am at work, I am ALWAYS on roaming data. I use WiFi at home, so the only time I typically user Sprint 3G is during my commute. They said there were NO exceptions and the decision comes from Corporate and is FINAL. 18 years with my company and 8 in good standing with Sprint on different phones... And they axed me! My Epic 4G Touch apparently is rather data hungry...

You have be roaming at least 75% of the time (not an exact number, just ballpark) in order for Sprint to boot you.
Basically, while you're roaming, Sprint is having to pay the other carrier for your usage. If you're using the other network more than Sprint, it's not profitable to keep you.

Basically, while you're roaming, Sprint is having to pay the other carrier for your usage. If you're using the other network more than Sprint, it's not profitable to keep you.

Last I heard it was 300MB of roaming then they send the letter. Do it again over that limit and you get the boot.

Yes, the letter says 300MB or the majority of 3G data. There were 2 months since November 2011 where
My roaming data % was more than non-roaming.
The thing that kills me is that my usage pattern hadn't changed across the last 3 phones I've had with them. The Google Play Store and all the apps connecting in the background had changed my consumption no doubt...
My E4GT is my first Android phone though, and they even made me pay an extra $10 per month for "premium data" with this phone because it is a "smartphone" (just like my previous Blackberry Curve)!

Do they make you pay an ETF when they do this? I know for most, roaming isn't an issue but some are on the edge of the network and are more likely to roam. Would kind of suck if they had to pay an ETF.
I'm expecting a letter reeeeeeeeeeaaaally soon. I used 2.5GB of roaming last month so I imagine they are a little pissy about that.

Sprint did offer to waive the ETFs (2 off them) AND any recurring charges for the last month of service... Actually, on AT&T, I'm now getting better coverage and speed, both in and out of my workplace, and with the wife's employee discount we are paying less overall.
3GB data plan on each phone... Most I've ever used on Sprint is like 1.2GB.
One of the best things about the AT&T data plan is that if you go over the limit, for $10 they automatically add another GB, not cancel your account. And roaming data only applies to international data usage.

If your Sprint 3G data is more than your Sprint 3G roaming data, then they won't usually take any action other than maybe warning letters.
I'm sure my usage was costing them money, but my usage was costing ME plenty of money too!
I was happy about no ETFs and the free last month... but there should be legal implications for them since they don't report any of this on your invoice OR USAGE DETAILS. When I asked why there was no mention of the roaming data issue on my bill, they said that some things changed earlier this year, and their Marketing and Billing departments weren't on the same page yet.
This a$$ reaming was brought to you by Sprint... Bringing a whole new meaning to the term "Unlimited"...

The problem is, there is no way to tell from your bill whether you are roaming on Sprint's network (as in, out of your home calling area) or roaming OFF of Sprint's network.
"Changes earlier this year" is BS. Their bill has stated "Sprint 3G Roaming - Unlimited" forever.

I've been using the EK02 modem combo'ed with PRL 11115 and Mr. Greg's ROAM Control for almost 3 months now, set to roam only and I haven't gotten a single letter, threat or anything!
I'm actually hoping to get one, I want out of my Sprint contract without paying the ETF, I'm sick of the slow 3G data speeds. Now before someone says well you've been a customer for over 10 years and you have resigned the contracts so you have no one else to blame but yourself, blah blah blah, back before the HTC EVO 4G, I didn't have these issues.
Over the past 3 years Sprints network has done to hell. My Samsung Instinct and my Palm Pre were FAST. I used them as modems for my laptop and everything else, NO problems. Browsing on them was FAST, no problems. Apps online on them, no problems. I get my EVO and its SLOW! That was about when 4G was coming so I waited it out and yep we finally GET 4G locally but only downtown. I keep hearing promisses of expansion blah blah blah so I renew picking up the Epic 4G Touch, oh, no more 4G expansion blah blah, LTE is the next big thing.
Well my Epic Touch is even slower then my EVO was.
Sprint got too big and there network just cant handle it.
My friends ATT Skyrocket blows my phone out of the water speed wise. Hell, just roaming to Verizon I get upward of a meg a second but on Sprint I'm luck to get 100 kbps. Sometimes it bursts to 600+ but it doesnt hold. Sometimes its as low as 20 kbps. Most webpages don't load.
I'm burned out.

[Q] Phone termed; what can I do in the future?

I use Sprint's unlimited network with a HTC EVO 4G along with Cyanogenmod. I used it to tether quite a bit...
Supposedly Sprint sent me a letter for "excessive roaming". I never really saw it, and I only tethered with 4G.
Sprint terminated my phone and left the two other phones in the contract. My plan is to basically transfer one phone in that contract to another and get mine back in (since the contract is under a 2 phone probation for 6-9 months).
I don't plan on screwing that up again.. so my questions are:
1.) How do I know if my data is roaming or not?
2.) Does not updating your radio regularly affect data roaming?
3.) I heard (from another forum) that torrenting can affect data roaming usage. I admit I've torrented a gigantic 3+gb free to play MMORPG through tethering before. What does torrenting do to affect data roaming (the technical details of it)?
4.) I enjoy using tethering as I travel (in the city where there's Sprint coverage) quite a bit. What are some pointers I could get to stay under the radar next time?

Not sure if that will work. They probably blocked your phone's esn, and they normally completely cancel your number, so you can't get that number back with sprint.

If you are on a Sense rom, there will be a triangle above the signal bars. Not sure if this happens on an ASOP rom or not. However, if you are using one of the Verizon prl's, you will get NO notification that you are roaming.

There really has only been 2 or 3 radio updates in the life of the evo, so there is no need to keep updating it. If you are not on the current radio, it can't hurt to update it.

Umm, well ANY tethering uses data, torrenting is no different, other than the fact that you are constantly using data, and obviously downloading large torrent files will use more data that downloading a 5kb email.

Well since sprint has unlimited data, if you are tethering on sprint's network you are fine, no matter how much data you use. It's the roaming data that will get you noticed and cancelled.

Which did they send you? A letter for excessive roaming, excessive data usage or excessive data roaming? The only reason I as is because the OP is vague when it comes to excessive roaming and there are 3 different cases of excessive roaming.
Each are different and need to be handled differently. I would call them up and ask which was the case.
Sprint will send 2 letters and place several calls to you when you are in violation of this TOS.

Excessive data roaming, according to one of Sprint's supervisors.
The supervisor claimed that my NUMBER will be cancelled, but I will be able to enable a new number. All I'll really have to do is get Google Voice and catch my old number to reroute calls to my new number (according to that supervisor)
It's strange because I'm not sure if I'm roaming or not (in data) with Cynaogen 7.
Needless to say, I've set my data to Sprint only instead of "Automatic".
They quite frankly mercilessly cut off my line, set the plan from a max of 3 lines to 2 for 6-9 months, gave me refusal to restore my old number after I negotiated that the letter was never seen.
They looked up something on my account and knew that I used a torrent software at one point. The supervisor used that and went off on a different tangent stating that downloading illegal software is a federal offense and reason enough to cut me off... I briefly corrected him saying that I specifically downloaded a 3-4 GB file that was a free to play game.
Anyways.. I hope this helps anyone who is currently tethering their EVO or any sprint device. Hopefully no one else will make the same mistake/s I did; they were absolutely ruthless even after 4+ hours of negotiations.

OK, calm down, I'm just asking! Has anyone heard of ANYONE involving themselves in a class action lawsuit against Sprint due to the next to non-existant Data that we pay a pretty penny for? It's ridiculous that we have to pay at least $30 for 4G data when most of us can't even get 3G data. My 3G data is approximately anywhere from 0.12 Mg to 0.3 Mg. And I can't even begin to get 4G data. Even the carrot of Unlimited data is nothing when data speeds are THAT sad. And I've tried 3G all over town (Louisville, KY). At least I get SOMETHING for 3G speeds. For 4G I get NOTHING. How can Sprint legally do this to us? Isn't that false advertising? They promised 3G and 4G data speeds and deliver NEITHER. Once people start dropping Sprint due to their pathetic data speeds, they may upgrade their service. I've read that alot of users keep Sprint as their provider strictly because of their unlimited data. So if they stopped unlimited data they would lose even more subscribers. Any lawyer types out there care to give their opinions?
Dude just switch carriers, no one is forcing you to stay with them unless you have a contract. Its not like every single one has no data connection, some has and some don't. So for others that has no clear connection should just switch. Just my opinion. Seems more of a hassle taking it to court or whatever. Im not against you ok, its just something I would do.

Is it stated anywhere in writing that the extra charge is for the 4G? We all know that it IS but that does not help a legal case.

Dude, Sprint is forcing me to stay with them by contract. I still have roughly 1.5 years under contract with them. I got my first smartphone with Verizon. 3G, was in fact, 3G. I was puzzled when I went to Sprint and their signals were so weak. I'm sorry but I seem to be wasting my time telling you about my problems. Because you seem to be a Sprint minion. Maybe not, but I feel anyone that is on the side of Sprint is against me. I guess I feel like Sprint should charge users that have such terrible signals less than users that live in a signal-rich environment. I only ask for what I'm paying for. To switch now would cost me several hundred dollars. You've heard of this concept called "fair"? Well I don't think it's "fair" to have to pay the same fees as users who are getting exactly what they pay for. Would you think it was "fair" to be under a lunch contract where you and others paid for the same sandwich, but others got their sandwich piled high but you only got a skimpy sandwich? I don't think so. Fair is fair. And people like me are not being fairly treated.

I agree with you but a class action would likely never never fly in court since they guarantee nothing. I was on Tmobile for years before Sprint and their signal and speeds were rock solid. But boy meets girl and girl wants boy on family plan so Im on Sprint for the last 2+ years and the last 6 months have been the worst. My city is getting their network vision update now so I hope thats the problem. In the meantime when my signal is poo I update profile and it picks up a bit. I shouldn't have to do this though.
If you have horrible service, get an Airave in your house. It'll be like a tower in your living room or wherever you have your high speed modem, if you gave one.
And just because someone doesn't want to jump on Sprint and their speeds doesn't mean that they're against you, it's just that they're willing to deal with the situation for now. Besides this is all temporary.

All a class action suit will do is make Sprint poorer, make the lawyers rich, and likely change nothing. And you might get a check for 3 dollars or so...
been down that road, for most people its more headaches than anything. and anyone who says it isn't just didn't realize they sometimes miss a text or call. plus if they don't give it to u free then u gotta pay for it and its not expensive but not at all cheap. in all honesty it helps your signal so ur not dropping calls but it really isn't doing anything for speed issues, it bumped my 3g speed from about 350kbps to about to about 650kbps..almost like turbo for 3g lol.

Where are you getting that you pay "at least 30$ a month for 4g data". The only additional data charge there is is on all smartphones, and it's only 10 bucks more a month than if you had data on a flip phone. And that 10$ is on all smartphones, so it wouldn't matter if you bought the new EVO LTE or the basic Motorola XPRT, you are paying the same price. There is no additional charge for 4g.

Sprint is working an intensely aggressive schedule to rebuild the ENTIRE NETWORK in 3 years, increasing 3g data coverage, and putting LTE everywhere 3g is. Major cities are first on the docket, but it will increase the network signal pretty much everywhere.
My last suggestion is to read through your TOS at some point. They do not guarantee or promise 3g or 4g data anywhere, and do state that it is subject to availability in your area.
I am tired of seeing this thread pop up over and over again.
You signed a contract giving up the right to seek class action status when you agreed to the ToS.
You can remedy your situation (according to contract) by arbitration, small claims, or complaining to regulators.

You were puzzled to see Sprint's weak signals yet you stayed with them? You had 15 days to test the network and decide if you wanted to stay or not. You and only you made that decision to stay with Sprint and sign the 2 year deal and now you are *****ing about it? I have no sympathy for you nor should anybody else.

I didn't have 15 days to test the network. As you can see, I get to Sprint through Credomobile. Also I didn't SIGN a 2 year deal as all my account dealings were done over the 'net. Also since when does anyone not experiment with a new device and just give up without trying to get it to work within 2 weeks? Even most stores give you 30 days. Whew! Just blowing off steam. No need to reply to this...
Ojones 838 have you thought about putting a verison prl on your phone all that roaming and sprint will ask you to leave and prodadly no etf.

I'm not saying you're wrong lickarock, I'm saying Sprint's data in the article you posted is a pipedream. I have to say "BS" on the 250 million number. That would mean that 75%+ of users would have 4G LTE coverage. Right now, Sprint doesn't even cover 75% of the users with good 3G coverage. Sprint's maps lie. I live in an "excellent" 3G area according to Sprint and get very very slow data or no data on Sprint's network.
I didn't have the option to "try" for 14 days either since I bought my phone in a different state and had it for 2 months before moving to CA. I've called several times saying "I've moved, and now my coverage is non-existent, please cancel my contract or replace my phone with one that will get a signal." Their response is "our maps show that you live in an excellent... blah blah blah". They don't care that phone calls just go to voicemail. I know of at least 7 people that have dropped Sprint and gone to AT&T or T-mobile when asking me about service and network in this area (friends and family bring their phones to me to root). Sprint is not just losing me as a customer, I'm taking another dozen or so (eventually) with me to other carriers.

ojones838 - I feel your pain on this, I really do. That said, a class action lawsuit isn't the way to go. Lawyers aren't the way to go for that matter. Just do what was posted above me. Use an alternate PRL and roam like no other. Sprint will kick you off without an ETF and you can switch carriers.
I too should have left within the 15 days but like a lot of others I didn't. The speeds were kind of ok in the beginning and I figured they would get better as Sprint upgraded their towers. That didn't happen. I'd heard even before switching to Sprint that the speeds were crap but I thought "really, how bad can they honestly be". Boy was I wrong...
So now I'm stuck paying for data that I don't have (thank you false advertising) unless I turn on WiMax "4G" and even that is slower than EVERY other carriers 3G. Sprint advertised specific speeds - which I've yet to see. So use another PRL and get out of the contract. That's what I'm doing at least.

that's a lot. maybe if people had consideration and didn't abuse tethering it would be included in the plans.. obliviously downloading 10gb of data while roaming seems blatantly excessive. surprised they didn't pull the plug, perhaps it takes a bit for the system to raise a flag. the fees must be costing them more than you're worth having as a customer, as harsh as that may sound..
I'd rather use roam control and get 3g Verizon speed, instead of 1 bar of Sprint 3g. So if they upped their network then I wouldn't have to. I'm not complaining though, just giving op my situation.
I wasn't tethering though. Just lots of high quality Spotify. I don't think they'd even know the difference.

I was just doing my usual work, home, kids stuff routine. That's how bad the sprint signals are in pockets of where I live. So for one month I used 6g of data roaming, which is my monthly average. Pandora, email and facebook.
In fact, my house, which is about 6 blocks from LTE coverage is a dead zone with roaming only (even with an air rave).
I reverted the modem back a couple versions the next month and problem was solved, of course with much slower data.
What I don't really understand is how sprint can know that the 2 mile stretch of area I live and work in is a deadzone and still give me crap for it. Basically, the rep said turn roaming off and have no service, or terminate. I like sprint, I've got 6 lines. It's the only carrier i can afford. I never call to complain, specifically because of that. I am happy with what I get.

i live in Michigan and have no 4G service. I pay $10/mo for "premium data" services. IDK about you but 3G speeds so slow that you dont even wanna use data is hardly "premium". i only use about 1.5GB/month. I am sure as soon as 4G LTE becomes available for me (end of year or early next year) i will get the same letter/call from them.

the thing that gets me is why don't they at least give out some numbers on how much you're allowed to roam data.. or are people not allowed data roaming at all?
i also assume if you tether, unless you do some type of work around on the device they can tell whether it's tethering or normal phone data.

TO ALL!!!! this is a call to action. I too, like many others are experiencing unacceptable data speeds while on 3G and in great reception while using the Galaxy S III. the speeds I should be receiving are 1.5-3 MB/s but instead I am receiving around 128Kb/s in the city and within excellent service. We all have to pay a 'Premium Data Add-On' charges just to own these phones and this is unacceptable. Please write an Email to [email protected], vice president of customer experience at sprint and let him know what you are experiencing. Maybe if enough pissed off customers write, they will finally listen!

That's a good idea. Cause I was thinking of doing the data roaming thing here and there when I need too. Some parts of Long Island is like a dead zone for Sprint. Esp, where I use to work. Now I work in New York City, signal is great there, but still tends to be funky and speeds are different (enough to notice) with all full bars. My friend who has Verizon, goes through his pandora, without skips, or downloads much quicker. I am just trying to wait it out for this 4G move to take place so my $10.00 extra a month addition won't feel that bad.....but its taking them forever!
It does suck. I've been paying the "premium" data few now for almost 3 years. I've never had had 4g and my 3g is pretty terrible.

They do its in your contract. And to the previous guy. 1.5GB of data is a lot for someone who doesn't get signal...

Use the hell out your phone tethering included, we pay way more than it cost to use data. Roaning cost them money that's why the carrier get mad, but on there network they could careless. Most people ain't power users only most people on xda, well in the real world we make up a small group I highly doubt we would interrupt service. Sprint 3g is just slow it don't matter if 1500 people are connected or just 2 it sucks. I Been tethering over 20 gigs a month along time atleast five years. That's not a lot when you consider downloading games from gameloft downloading roms on xda tethering to use your xbox 360 online watching netfrix and so on. It needs to be unlimited all times free tethering an all I rather pay more for that.

I am trying to roam using roam control but my GS3 won't get a signal in Chicago. I others on here roaming fine. I'm using version 2.6.2 which is the latest version. I have the app set to Samsung GS3. What can I do to get this working?
