[Q] SIII software port to Nexus? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Do you think it's likely that devs will be able to port the new Samsung apps from the S3 onto the Nexus?

No. Because nobody wants TouchWiz if they can have stock ICS lol.
Well, nobody that has enough time/skill to port it.

Android is all about options. Don't like TouchWiz ported for Galaxy Nexus? move onto the next thread. If a dev wants to invest his/her time into porting TouchWiz then let them.
GS 3 software isn't even out. It's all closed source. It can be ported but difficult.

No some people like different uis at first I loved sense but then it was time for a change to AOSP then to touchwiz its about personal preference. While some people like stock others might not and want something different

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is an example of the closed minded AOSP only fan boys of the android community.
Don't get me wrong, I love aosp as much as everyone else does. The reason I go this phone. But also I got this phone because of its openness so that I can put whatever the hell I want onto it.

Moved to Q&A.
It's sad seeing so many people put down others who want to do something new to their phones. There's more to life than just having the stock ROM.

I would love to see the cool notification toggle widgets from the S3 ported to the Nexus. Was always surprised Google left out notification toggle widgets completely from stock Android 4.0. I know they never had them before, but all the newer phones have toggle widgets, I think it should have been a stock feature in ICS. And the ones I see in the S3 preview, look pretty darn slick.

Not trying to be a jerk - was just kidding.

one of the few features i would like to see on our phones.

I'd really want to see the new Video while multitask thing. That looks so cool! I have a strange habit to listen to specific songs on YouTube and it's kind of annoying to not be able to watch videos while doing other stuff.

Really? You don't think anyone's going to want that Siri ripoff so they can say "Hello Galaxy" to their phones?
Or what about those nifty apps that solve the First World problems of having to touch your screen to keep it from turning off or having to manually choose a contact from your contact list to call them? With innovative thinking like that, I fully expect the next app to be one that senses when you want to text someone in car mode and changes the traffic lights on the street to red so you can text in safety.
Not even Buddy Share? I would think people would want their phones to second-guess which of your contacts most wants to see pics of them drunk and making asses of themselves.
I do like the lockscreen, though. I hope we can get that.

S3 software for Gnex
I think it would be good to see applications such as Smartstay and others on the Galaxy Nexus.

What's sad is that majority bought the the Nexus device thinking they have the option to run.
Blur, Sense, AOSP, & Touchwiz.
Because this is, in fact, a Google phone.
With no locks, no restrictions, and is actually encouraged by Google to hack the living Hell out it (apple u should learn from this).
I bought this phone thinking there are cool options (and there are cool option). I would see one, read, and if i like it, I'll try it. If I don't care, I'll move on and say nice work anyways.
This is one of the many Visions of the Developer Phone. ( It is Right?)
I think it's sad how we don't have a full port yet(yeah I know it's hard but the nexus S has Sense 4) of any version except AOSP.

Great news! We can only hope our neglected E4GT gets some ICS love soon too.
EDIT: Apparently it's been said this is just an ICS launcher...
Still some pretty cool mods though hey! I wouldn't mind the fast switch program he had. Its the same one I got on my galaxy tab 10.1 ICS will get here eventually amd when it does I hope it changes the android expereince with lots of eye candy and fun features. Hope it really takes advantage of our 1gig ram and fast internal storage and is coded specificly for duel core cpu's. How sweet would thay be !
Our phone is neglected? It's been out for a month. Hardly time to consider it neglected.

I think they are talking in general the SGS2 has been out for a few months now it's just new for the US market.
there is a ICS launcher that looks just like that and the status bar is wrong i think its the launcher with a themed bar
I could not careless about the ICS Sprint would push to us. I want the ICS that the devs bring us.

Google WANTS Ice Cream Sandwich
It was my understanding that Google wants as many devices as possible to be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich as soon as possible to push developers in to moving their current applications to this platform and that Google basically wants previous versions including Honey Comb to go the way of the Dodo or the Dinosaur. So this could mean that we would see an upgrade fairly quickly for our devices so as to reduce fragmentation.

All that tells us it they're working on an update (which we already knew, since they have known bugs they're trying to resolve), and it's full of placeholder text. The only version is mentions is 2.3.3, and we're on 2.3.4. So clearly not an indication of any actually useful information.

Thanks - I couldn't figure out why they thought that link had anything to do with ICS.
Of course if they really wanted a shock and awe campaign tomorrow, just imagine if the top 10 Android devices all got an update to ICS tomorrow
I would rather have to wait a bit for good ROMs than have everything the first week so we don't have to listen to the "Where's the Jelly Bean update " talk. My phone is perfect and will only get better. Its not like every CM7 nightly is perfect. It takes a lot of nightlies to get a stable release. A quick word about JB hate.

We've seen lots of complaining in the last couple of days about what is and isn't working in these ports.
It seems GPS may or may not be working correctly, that it may or may not be due to the Leap Second.
WiFi, Bluetooth, volume... if you have these issues, they can mostly be remedied. If not, gratz.
The fact is, these Roms are ports of development previews on a phone slightly but importantly different than yours running an OS that hasn't been released yet.
I was deeply amazed and impressed that some developers had working ports to CDMA the very night it was announced for GSM.
I'd you are running one of these JB ports and you find that it works well enough as a daily driver, consider yourself fortunate and hit the thanks button on the OP, maybe even donate.
If you are trying it out, but find that it lacks the stability or functionality that you require, click the thanks button on the OP anyway because they spent the time to give you something now for free that which you would otherwise have to wait weeks for, or, considering VZW's track record, maybe never.
This is how I'm looking at it- I'm getting to preview the latest update for free before it officially comes available. Just like those lucky bastards at Google I/O, except how much did they pay per ticket?
Thanks, devs, for doing what you do.

They paid $900 per ticket. But they get $1200 or so free of stuff. So they actually received 300 for going to it if you look at it that way.
Nevertheless I'm very pleased with JB. Everything is working beautiful for me. I using daily driver now without any issues. Just the stock JB at that. I'm not much for all the features of Roms. More into kernel tweaks which I do miss from glados kernel. But Franco is doing fine for now.

I most definitely appreciate the efforts. I ran the Vicious JB stock port on my VZW Gnex but in the end, I couldn't stick with it because the Verizon framework apps don't work on Jelly Bean yet. This means I couldn't use the My Verizon or NFL Mobile apps, and that's a deal breaker. I understand that you can blame Verizon for requiring the back end framework in order for their branded apps to work, and that's all fine and well, but at the end of the day, I couldn't run them.
Be that as it is, I still appreciate the efforts of those developers to have a working CDMA port the same night. Thanks to all who do what you do. I'm a software developer myself so I know how tedious this crap can be.
Half of the JB "hate" posts are not "my app doesn't work, JB sucks!" but rather "my app doesn't work, I'm posting it in case someone has stumbled upon a fix"
The problem is 80% of the people who own a GN are:
a. Bronies (so they're inherently tools),
b. it's their first Android device (so they're inherently tools).

That sort of depends. There are some changes that have to be made to a ROM for the GSM model to be 'ported' to the CDMA models. So, it's a 'port' for those phones, because only the GSM developer preview was 'released'.
They do realize other top phones are just getting ice cream sandwich, and we Nexii already have Jelly Beans sweet taste in our mouths?? Ridiculous!

I came across that site a couple weeks ago and it doesn't look very promising so far. Their furthest along ROMS, for devices that have been out for a long time, are still barely functioning. But maybe if they throw enough people at the SGSIII, they can get something that works OK by the time my warranty is up in a year and I dive into different ROMS.
I'm definitely going to keep my eye on this, because TouchWiz sucks balls... but it's going to take more than just booting with pretty much nothing working before I get my hopes up.
I'd help if I could since I'm one of the guys who wants this to come to fruition, but I have no development skills at all. I hope you guys can get it worked out though and look forward to seeing the finished product.

You are? I think touchwiz is an improvement over sense (not saying TW is awesome or anything, most ROMs have better UIs). I was in a Sprint store looking for a Case-Mat Pop (kickstand) for my phone a few days back, and I played around with the Evo LTE. I was really unimpressed with the latest Sense and was glad I went Sammy for this 2 year go around.

Removable battery, expandable memory, & AT&T exclusive...
I'll admit TouchWiz 4 has REALLY improved. But, Sense, even with its problems, still has a lot of function that's hard to let go of.
Would it be easier to get on the US variants?
I only say that because put the Adreno graphics on the S4 chips. I remember the NS4G Sense ports having issues with graphics because of the Hummingbird processor.
|Trolling with a smile|
Went with sammy for the removable battery mainly. The first couple of days with the s3 without a spare battery was killing me. Ofcourse it was a new phone so I was playing with it a lot and trying out different roms etc and battery went down fast. Plus I still had to use it to make calls and text so I had it hooked up to a charger everywhere I was (home, work, car). I was always afraid of it going down to 40% battery lol. Anyway after getting a spare OEM battery + charger all is well again. No more worries specially when I went out.
Touchwiz isnt bad but sense just looks nicer to me and not having to install extra widgets (twitter, facebook, weather) was nice. Also like the weather lock screen. I miss that.
Anyhow I'm now with tmobile and Im hoping these guys will port it over to all the carriers and not just sprint.

Any idea when the 4.2 update might drop_

I am interested in the Note II. I currently have a 4S and with the lack of a jailbreak the i5 is not appealing to me... I tried before with the skyrocket but it was such a bad phone that I really hated it and went back to the 4S. I find this phone extremely capable... 4.2 bring certain updates that might mimic lockinfo for iPhone and that is one huge important piece on why I have stayed on the jailbroken 4S.
Any idea on when this update is scheduled to hit? I only recently saw that the 4.1.2 was leaked but it appears is NOT for the 7105.
This phone has a lack of custom Roms as most of them (all) are for the non LTE version.
Really like the DNA, but not available on AT&T and I want an LTE phone.
Thanks

Dont post questions in the dev section!
-No way to know when 4.2 is going to come for Note II. In fact, 4.1.2 official hasn't been out yet, only the leaked unofficial version.
-Some may agree and some may disagree with me, but you really don't need custom roms for this phone. The stock experience is excellent out of the box.
-The DNA does have LTE, but on Verizon.

As is the bug where is becomes iw...lol.
Yeah I wonder how they missed a whole month. ..
Sent from my Samsung Note II.
I have 4.2 on my Nexus. Nothing in it that I need over 4.1.2
There is no ability to disable lock screen widgets, they annoy the heck out of me.
Swype in the keyboard we already have.
Quick settings is a joke. If they were toggles they would be useful.
Nothing makes me want 4.2 over 4.1.2 right now.

How is that a crappy response? Its big news right now. Looks like Google has rushed 4.2 due to the imminent arrival of the Nexus 4.

crappy response or not. Thanks for the response. I was not hiding under arock, but Iwas not aware of this - maybe because I don't own a Nexus, or use stock(?)
