[Q] Not getting 4G on GSM Nexus - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hey guys I just got my Galaxy Nexus yesterday and I've been noticing that I am not getting 4G or 4G speeds in the areas that I used to with my Galaxy S 2. Just so you know I'm on T-mobile. I haven't seen 4G or a 4G speed once. What's going on? I'm running CM9 Nightly

GS2 and galaxy nexus do not have the same HSPA radio
GS is 42mbit
GN is 21mbit
also the icon on the GSM GN is just H

Oh dang. Well that really sucks.

GSM Nexus do not have LTE radio, you need to get the LTE Nexus, which i believe is carrier locked.

T-Mobile USA doesn't have LTE, so it doesn't matter what device he gets.
OP, what are your speeds? Sounds like you're falling for some serious marketing speak. The T-Mobile branded SGSII has 42mbps HSPA+ radio compared to the 21mbps HSPA+ radio in the Galaxy Nexus. Real-world speeds will be a bit lower, that's just how it is.
Also, the Galaxy Nexus doesn't have a "4G" icon. When its connected to HSPA+ you'll see an "H" icon. It'll be connected to the exact same network. Its just an icon.

I understand that. I just though the gnex was 42mbps hspa. I'm getting 3-6 mbps real world whereas before I was getting 9-15

hmm. Well that's too big of a gap to blame it on the radio. I easily post 9mbps on mine. And the blame is all on you. Its extremely well documented this device is 21mbps.

I get like 5-6Mbps on ATT, but that's the Max I ever get with all my phones. So its normal for ATT I say.

I am really curious about this as well. I have speed tested a GSII and a One S and seen speeds around 20mb, where I get a consistent 3.5mb in the same place with my GN.

Okay, 20mbps on T-Mobile? Sorry, don't think that's a standard consistant speed you can reproduce. There's no way you held a SGSII and a GN next to each other, one getting 20mbps and the other getting 3.5mbps. Something is wrong there.
Realize the speeds are different, but cmon. I get 7-9mbps on my GNex + T-Mo no problem.

The review of the one s on tmonews shows consistent speeds of 20mbps+.
I know the One s is "42mbps" but I do sometimes wonder if they are holding non-tmobile phones down.
My sensation speeds were crap when I moved from the nexus one initially. I changed my phone on my account from unknown to the sensation and I was getting consistent 7-9mbps instantly. The sensation is only 14.4mbps.
I rarely get 9mbps with the GNex.

Yeah, I know there is something wrong, that's why I have been asking around. And to be honest it was the One S that was hitting 20+ consistently, the GSII hit 14-18mb while I never hit faster than 3.6. If anyone had anything helpful let me know, I have already tried two or three different radios with no noticeable difference, and I have read about some kernels having a data speed lock problem, so I tried different kernels with no noticeable difference as well. And in the end, I have never hit any higher than 3.8 download speed with my GN here in Reno and we do have the 42mb towers.

I get over 7 Mbps easily. Phone set to unknown on my account. highest was 11 Mbps xxla2

I always thought that as long as the tower back haul is not maxed out, a 21 Mbps and 42 Mbps phone should get identical speeds as long as you're not hitting any of the limits. So I mean if the 42 Mbps phone pulls down 15 Mbps, then the 21 Mbps phone should also pull down 15 Mbps, up till the 21 Mbps limit.
So I'd say its artificially limited by T-Mobile giving preference to their phones over unlocked phones. Or some wrong apn setting.

Galaxy Nexus Canadian Speed Tests

I noticed there were a lot of threads around the net regarding lte and u.s. speed tests but I haven't seen much by way of Canadian speed tests. Thought I would dedicate this thread to that cause. It's a shame how much slower our data speeds are in comparison to our neighbors in the south...anyways, I digress.
Based on 8 test cluster:
Average down is 2135.5kbps
Average up is 389kbps
Average ping is 209.625ms (normally in 150 range)
I'm on Mobilicity. Signal strength and build/kernel information in screenshots.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but you're with Mobilicity. Their network is pretty lousy compared to Bell, Telus, and Rogers. I don't have the Galaxy Nexus yet. But I get much higher speeds on my Nexus S and HTC Amaze on the Rogers network compared to what you are getting. I'm sure someone on here are with either Telus, Bell, or Rogers and will post their results. I have no doubt it will be much higher.
Here are some random tests I've done over the last 3 weeks. As high as 8 Mbps and as low as<1 Mbps. Tests were performed north of the GTA.
I find that any tests 8am or earlier are good. During the day is poor. Network is probably saturated then.
Running stock v4.01 on Rogers.
I get pretty good speeds with bell mobility. Tried out a couple of different servers and best download was 11187 kbps and my best upload was 4770 with 53 being the lowest ping.
Galaxy Nexus on Fido
Rogers 8:20am. Way further north of GTA. Better speeds than my Bell turbo hub.

Trust me I don't take that the wrong way I'm all too well aware of these facts but I only pay 35/month for unlimited EVERYTHING. I used 14gb of data last month could never do that with bell telus or rogers.
Aside from that I hate bell because after 12 years of hard service they laid off my father and telus tried to send me a 1300 dollar bill once for minutes I never used..had to go to the bbb to get that reversed.
No excuse for rogers other then don't want a contract or a 100 + dollar bill every month.

Well I was just interested in seeing how long large files take to download. While I have a ~2 mbps connection I typically download smaller files at around 500 kbps whereas larger files that are 20 megabytes or more download at around 1 - 1.5 mbps. Try downloading a large game like frontline commando and see how long it takes. If speed test results are accurate should only be a couple seconds will more likely be 4-8 though

Posting these tests without specifying which baseband you are running makes your test result meaningless to everyone else.

Lol I thanked u accidentally but yea we don't. Canadian telecommunications services are garbage. We have some of the highest prices in the world with sub par networks. The same applies to internet. In Canada you can expect to pay between 70-150 a month for a few hundred minutes and 2-3gb of data..its possible to negotiate better data caps but still garbage.
I was actually talking too mobilicity coo Stewart Lyons the other day at an entrepreneurs conference and he was telling me that that was the reason he left siriusxm Canada ..saw an opportunity for a more cost efficient customer friendly model

Don't forget, we don't have the LTE version of the Galaxy Nexus in Canada. So if most of the speeds are done on Verizon's LTE network, then there is no comparison. However if you're comparing the GN on AT&T or T-Mobile's network, then that's a fair comparison.

Poor performance on SpeedTest.net (GSM version)

Hey all,
I live in Chicago and have a GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus using the T-mobile network. Honestly I have never gotten more than 10mbps download and often get less than 5mbps. My ping is also very unstable sometimes its 1000+ or its 100. Is there something wrong with my 4g radio? As a comparison my gf's Samsung Galaxy S II gets 15mbps or better.
Thanks
Here in Baltimore my tmo galaxy s2 pulls 10 to 12 mbps and my gnex on tmo only gets about 5. Don't think there is really anything wrong with the gnex radio. Its just not best suited for tmo network as good as the tmo branded sgs2.

does your gnex show 3G when you are not browsing and then switches to "H" when you are?
Try flashing some radios. Ug--x radios are for north America but it seems a lot of people do better with Europe radios on T-Mobile which are XX--X.

Try different radios to see if it helps. The T-Mobile SGSII will always get faster speeds because its a 42mbps HSPA+ device, whereas the GNex is a 21mbps HSPA+ device.

Anybody getting good "4g" speeds on T-Mobile U.S.?

I have been getting about 5mpbs down consistently. Have tried lots of different radios with matching RIL. My sisters phone next to mine with the same server and gets 12mpbs.

She has a 42Mbps radio and you have a 21Mbps radio. It makes a bit of a difference. Honestly, however, there are very few situations where anything over 3Mbps is necessary on modern smartphones. Also, speed tests are like benchmarks, they aren't entirely indicative of real world usage results.
There are also several threads about speeds on T-Mobile.
It doesn't help that after the official 4G specifications were essentially trashed, 4G is little more than a meaningless marketing term.
As said.. her phone is capable of achieving higher speeds as the Nexus tops out at 21mbps
"Long is the way, and hard, that out of hell leads up to light."
Shouldnt we still be getting similar speed though? Just because hers has a 42 mbps vs my 21 mbps shouldn't that just mean that mine would only be getting 21 where hers would get 30 for example?
Edit: I meant if we where in an area hers got 30 in, mine would only get 21.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
Logically, yes but that is not how it works. There is probably a much larger throughput for her device.
"Long is the way, and hard, that out of hell leads up to light."
Fastest I got with a Nexus is 8Mbps. You will want to get the Galaxy S3 for T-Mobile if you want faster, I guess it will support 42Mbps. Near the celltower, I got 24Mbps down speed with my T-Mo SII.
I rather have better signal penetration than high speed though, maybe their 1900MHz band upgrade will provide that. With T-Mobile, I still need to be near the windows source to use the internet consistently.

Its because of some sort of dual band HSPA+ that T-Mobile devices have. Instead of a single band of 42 it has dual 21 bands. I read that on T-Mobile's FAQ somewhere.

The T-Mobile SII has higher throughput capability, deal with it. You can't fix "existing components" of a Ford Fiesta to make it drive as fast as a Ferrari. (Unless it was a WRC Fiesta, but that's a different story.)
You could flash different radios to your Nexus which can potentially improve the overall signal, but not to the point where it can compare with the T-Mo SII in term of outright download speed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1405345
Be careful of flashing the wrong radio for your phone region though or you can brick the device, but you can always flash factory image to fix it.
I've gotten 38 mb/s download speeds in Chicago.
Edit: Yes I do have verizon though, I wanted to clarify that the Nexus is capable of download speeds greater than 21.

OP, what you're experiencing is normal, as others have said. It'll probably even be different from another 21Mbps device.
Frankly, speed difference to me is noticeable only under 2Mbps or so - when loading a webpage or HQ video tends to be delayed.

It's not. He's an idiot.
Not be rude but in the U.S. we're kind of lucky for an unlocked phone to get HSPA+. Most unlocked international phones can only get 2G EDGE.
I remember when I had Virgin Mobile and $25 for unlimited, uncalled data was a great deal. At first I could get usable 3G speeds of about 1.5 or 2 Mbps then as soon as everyone bought that cheap Optimus the network was overcrowded and then I got anywhere from 60 Kbps to 600 Kbps.
It took about 7 minutes to start loading a YouTube video. After that horrible experience with Sprint Network I'll never complain about data speeds again.
I'm glad to have T-Mobile's data speeds and I don't really care about getting dedicated fiber optic T3 speeds on an LTE phone.

I know that lol
When the gnex just came out it was noticably slower than a sprint galaxy s 2......I was wondering if it improved
And 3g in my area is amazing........during the day I hit 150-200KB/s and at night 250-300KB/s

GSM GNex data slower on t-mo/att, but why?

Why is it that the gsm gnex has slower data speeds running on t-mo/att than their carrier branded phones? I'm using t-mo and my gs2 will outperform my gnex in data speeds any day of the week. I know this is the norm, but why are gsm phones slower?

I've always thought the same but I'm sure it's because the branded phones are tested in house at the respective carriers and tuned to the best operating radios. Our GSM phones just have to work with all radios at optimum level. T-mobile has months to fine tune their phones for release just for their network. That makes the difference.

The gsm gnex from the playstore is listed as an hspa+ device that works with att/t-mo. So its a radio/modem issue?
Your Hercules is a Tmo HSPA+42 device while the GN is "only" 21. So, you should see max speeds of about 20-25mbps for the Herc and upwards of 9 on the Nexus.

I don't agree with this statement personally. Unless your in an area where you actually get those speeds it shouldn't matter. My previous phone, SGS4G, was a 21mbps HSPA+ device and saw the same speeds as my friends Tmo GS2. Both topped out around 10mbps down, best I've seen with my Gnex is 8, so not much worse but a little slower.

If you're in an area with 42mbps towers deployed, then the speeds will definitely be higher on the 42mbps HSPA+ device. That's just how it is. The radio just gives you more headroom, so it has a higher theoretical max speed. Most areas nowadays are rolled out with 42mbps service on T-Mobile. If all you want is faster speeds, then the T-Mobile branded devices are a better choice than an unlocked device that likely only has a 14.4mbps or 21mbps radio.
