Insufficient storage.. - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey peeps.
I've run into a problem recently. I don't have enough storlage space left for installing apps from the market.
I'm using an ICS Rom by sandvold.com. I have partioned 2 gigabytes of my 32 gigs SD card to be used for a2sd and so far only 500 mb is in use. Both my dalvik cache and app data are on the sd card.
During the installation of a2sd in my Rom I chose to use the stock version.
Does anyone know a possible solution to my problem?
Ty in advance!

Open Terminal Emulator on your phone and type
Code:
su
a2sd install

I have done that already. How would I else be able to have my dalvik cache and app data on my sd card..?

If you want to know where all your free space has gone, try Diskusage app, and check your data partition...
Probably the cache of some of your apps has grown too much...
I had the same problem before I changed to Data++ hboot, and to COS ICS ROM (with dalvik2sd option)

I've just realized you can't install apps from the market...
Try clearing caches and/or data from your browsers. Or even games... When you have enough free space for installing, try Diskusage then...

I managed to clear up a little space by clearing my browser cache to install an app that easily clears my cache. I wanted to link my Titanium backup screenshot and the response to writing the command written above. Finally booted up my pc and here they are:

Help is here!
I had the same problem.I have a desire stock 2.2.2 rooted and the space is very limited. This is what i done:
I partition my sd card ext2/ext3 (ext4 doesn't work)
Installed link 2 sd (when you first launch you will be prompted what partition you have ext2/ext3/ext4)
Restart the phone and you are done.
After linking the apps( i mean i linked in first restart 40+) the phone will boot slowly but after that it will be faster.
Hope helps you

I thank you much for the reply, but this is already what I've done and I'm out of space again, with my SD partitioned. I partitioned 2 GB of storage on my SD and it isn't using it all as you see on the titanium backup screenshot. I have no clue on how to fix it..

I checked with the Diskusage app and found that approximately 600 MB was allocated for cache and data. Why isn't all of my 2 GB of sd-ext added to this "list"? Any suggestions would be apreciated.

Your output clearly shows A2SD is not working. Which means, Apps and Dalvik-Cache are not moved to SD-EXT.
So please run
Code:
a2sd install
After successfull reboot (script will you asking to do so after answering the question which data should be moved), please the output of this command again
Code:
ls -l /data

I ran the "a2sd install" command, moved dalvik and moved data by writing "y" to the questions.. After that I performed a reboot.
I then ran the command you wrote: ls -l /data.
I could be worth mentioning that during the installation of my ICS rom I choose to use the stock a2sd. I used to have a GB rom on my Desire some time ago. Back then I was using some other script called Darktremor and that worked. I have the opportunity to try another a2sd script during the installation of my rom. Any suggestions?

Ok this is what i suggest:
Remove the sim and memory card
If you have an card reader (backup your fat 32 partition and format it ;after that format ex2/ext3 partition)
Restore backup on the fat32 partition
Now do the phone a factory reset
Wait till it boots
Restart it
Put back the sd card and sim in the phone
Go to market and install link 2 sd and do the method i write in last post.
If this dosn't work flash data++ hboot from alpharev site

A2SD is still not working. How and with witch program did you partition your SD card?

MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition
Ok now i know what you are talking about:whatever you install it gives you inssuficient memory.I had the same prob after installing some app from market.I just installed it and it worked good then.

I used the recoverymode (Revolutionary) to partition my SD card, but it was an entirely new SD card at the time I installed it in my phone for about 1 month ago. I hadn't formatted it before I started using it.
I'm gonna try your method mansamihai, and get it done today hopefully. Not being able to install/update apps is driving me crazy.

do not use MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition for creating your ext partition.
while it may work for some, in lots of cases it can cause more problems.
backup your sd card to computer first, then try partitioning from scratch again.
gparted is recommended above anything else, or use 4ext recovery.

I used the partition function in the revolutionary recovery mode to partition my SD. I've made it to the point where I should choose which file system my SD cards partition is in the Link2SD app and I have no clue which one to choose? Any chance for a bit of help here?

I tried the to do it all over again, sadly without any change in results..
It is still not working..
Any suggestions on what to do now?
Thanks in advance!

How do i Install apps2sd after rooting with unrevoked

Hi, I have searched for the answer but cant find it
I rooted with unrevoked yesterday and installed the clockworkmod recovery as well.
i downloaded r1-a2sd-desire-dalvik-fresh-signed.zip
and put it on the root of my sd card
i then entered the recovery wiped data and cache which wiped and tried to wipe dalvik though nothing appeared to happen.
i then tried to flash the above mentioned zip of apps2sd
it starts flashing but then comes to a message saying...
can't symlink system xbin failure at line 5 symlink busybox
so what am i doing wrong?
any help would be much appreciated.
i have a nandroid backup.
I tried for ages to get a2sd on my stock rooted desire. I used several guides all of which failed somewhere.
In the end I gave up and installed PAYS 2.1 ROM with Sense & A2SD. Works fine and looks pretty much like stock.
Use Recovery mode (Push from Windows) to format SD Card with 0MB Swap, 512MB Ext and the rest FAT32. Upgrade the ext2 to ext3 then use ROm Manager from Market to install the new ROM.
Yes, this was what i had been thinking i would have to do. do i need to flash a new radio for pays?
Been trying to do this also.

I backed up my sd card to pc then used rom manager to partition card then copied my files back to card, then i go into settings and set for apps to be installed to external.
Next i go into market and download an app and it installs itself on the sd card and i make a shortcut on the phone.....everything works fine.
But after a reboot, the shortcut had disappeared and the app is not listed in my "all Apps" but still shows that it is installed if i go into market.
I have this problem with all roms.....i don't know what i'm doing wrong.
The way I understand A2SD and Froyo's app2sd, when you install A2SD/+ enabled rom and partition your sd card, you don't have to set up anything.
It "tricks" rom to use ext partition as part of internal memory, and stores everything it can in ext partition (A2SD storage).
It always worked for me, and you can check this by installing quick system info app from market.
It will show if your ext partition (A2SD storage) is being filled with data - check out this pic that I found with google:

this is an example of worrking A2SD, if it doesn't work, or you haven't partitioned you card, A2SD storage will be unavailable.
Once you choose setting for the apps to be installed to external, you manually switch to Froyo app2sd, which is inferior way to store your apps on sd card. That's why it didn't work for you.
Thanks for the info
I will try again....my phone says A2SD storage -information not available
Cheers.

[Q] help, unable to create sd partition

i'm currently running leedroid 3.0.8.2 a2sd+, rooted using the unrevoked method and i purchased a new sd card.
last time i partitioned i used rom manager successfully but if i simply swap cards with the fat 32 data transfered the phone won't boot past the splash screen.
i've tried to use gparted but my pc refuses to boot from the iso file no matter what format i use (cd, usb drive).
should i be trying to simply copy both partitions to the new sd card and if so how?
apologies if this has come up before but i was unable to find a suitable answer to my specific problem.
When you made your gparted CD, did you just copy the .iso to CD, or actually burn it?
Mistake I made was to dl gparted to desktop, insert disk and drag and drop gparted straight in. Wouldn't work until I used Nero (or other burn software) to burn to disk.
Also, try MiniPartitionWizard. You can dl home edition for free and works very well. Simple too.
The simplest way I find to partition sd card is via recovery. Tutorial here:
http://www.jayceooi.com/2011/01/12/...tition-on-sd-card-with-clockworkmod-recovery/
I burnt the ISO as a data disc using Nero, no joy.
I'll try that mini partition tool next. Thanks all

Minitool is a bag of crap. If you want to break your sd card and spend hours trying to figure out why it doesnt work when everything looks ok, then go for minitool.
Many will say "it worked fine for me" and thats true, it has worked for many, but it has also failed for many.
I highly recommend staying with gparted.
If you dont get along with burning CD's, it may take a little longer but using a vmware player (virtual machine) removes the need for a physical CD (just boots the .iso). I have a link to my guides in my signature. I have a step by step guide to do this.
+ 1 for gparted
Hi, I'm relatively new to this myself but am currently running LeeDrOiD 3.0.8.2
I bought a new SD card and partitioned it with gparted but I could not copy the ext3 data across. The phone would not boot.
I replaced the original SD card and used titanium backup for all my apps and data and reinstalled LeeDrOiD clearing the data, cache and dalvik in recovery first.
Of course you need gparted to run first. I use the USB boot with Jo problem.
Hope this helps.

Then restore nandroid... This will also restore your SD ext

Problem partitioning my sd card / low internal memory problem

I have been readin a lot about partitioning sd cards. And my problem is that no matter which rom I use (cyanogen, miui), i have a problem with low internal memory. I have read a lot about partitioning sd card to create ext and swap partitions and that should move the apps to the sd and dalvik cache also so that the internal memory is liberated.
However, I've used s2e, a2sd, data2sd, and they all tell me that my apps or dalvik cache can't be moved to the sd because the space is full. Which I know is not. I have tried partitioning my sd card using rom manager and minitool partition. But for some reason I keep getting this message that I don't have enough space. Actually I know there is something wrong with the sd-ext partition because when I backup any rom, at the end of the backup process it says something like "can't mount sd-ext. won't be able to make backup of sd-ext" (something like that).
I know there is something wrong with my partition. The only thing I have not tried is partitioning using clockworkmod, but I haven't done it because when I go to the advance settings I don't have the option to partition my sd card. I have cwm 5.0.2.7. and the option to partition sd card is simply not there!
Another interesting thing I want to add here is that maybe it's not only a problem with the sd-ext partition. I say this because when I try to move an app to the sd card using the phone aplication manager, it gives me the exact same message: "failed to move the application. There is not enough storage space left". And this is weird because this is supposed to move apps to the fat32 part of the sd, which I know is working normally. I can access all my files, music, photos, etc. And there are like 3 gb of free space, but it still tells me that there is not enough space.
What is wrong with this? Is it the SD card? Or is it the partition?? I would love to try to partition my sd card using CWM, but I don't have that option. How can I get that option to try it??
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I can't install more than 7 apps to my phone if I can't fix this low internal memory problem.
Thank you very much!

I have already tried with ext2, ext3, and ext4. The thing is I can't partition my sd card through recovery mode because I don't even have the option to partition sd card. I have CWM-based Recovery v.5.0.2.7-jordan.
I've partitioned my sd card using rom manager. Maybe that's the problem??? I don't know.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It should not be this difficult.

Ok, I have burned gparted to a cd, and I have tried to boot from cd. I know I have to go to bios to rearrange the boot order, but the problem is that it has no option to boot from cd drive.
Unless cd boot means the same as external device, which is the only option I have on my BIOS. Here's the image:

I have enabled external device boot and have placed external device as the priority boot, as seen on the image. But it doesn't make the cd boot. Why is it? Or am I missing something here??
Thank you very much.

Hmm. Well I read that I needed to burn a cd with gparted and then boot it somehow. I thought that's what it meant. I'm guessing I'm wrong... Sorry, I don't know much about these programs.
EDIT: I'm follwing this thread to partition sd card: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535914. I will post the results when I'm done.
Ok. I partitioned my sd using gparted. I couldn't do it by burning a cd with it, but using USB worked.
I partitioned my sd card following the steps mentioned in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535914
My sd card should now be partitioned correctly. If I'm not wrong, my phone should automatically install apps to the sd-ext partition of my sd card right? Well, my phone still doesn't do this. I have tried to move apps to sd, through s2e, and a2sd and still no luck. not even the phone's application manager moves it to the fat32 part of the sd.. I still get the message that there is not enough storage left.
The thing is, I don't really think that my sd is corrupted or something, because whenever I backup my rom, it doesn't give an error at all. I can access my sd card, move and paste files. So, why is it not working well only for apps?
I'd appreciate any other help. Thank you.
UPDATE: I downloaded a newer version of a2sd and it worked, I was able to move apps to the sd-ext part, and the dalvik cache. I solved the original problem, but it now created another problem.
Now that I have installed this app and working, it makes my IMEI number disappear. Therefore, I have no signal and I have to restore my backup to make my phone work again and show my IMEI number again.
So, I have my phone working with my IMEI, without a2sd, or have a2sd, but then I have on signal because it deletes my IMEI.
Is there a way to fix this?? hmmm.. Please help

Link2SD Tutorial
Developer's Thread
Another Awesome Tutorial
In Simple Words,
Advantages:
You can save space on internal memory.
Disadvantages:
As Samsung phones mount the memory card after boot.. everytime you boot you loose your widgets and sometimes you get mount errors.
UPDATE: In case of mount warnings, update the application and options>recreate mounting scripts. If it still doesn't work try reinstalling link2sd and repeating.
How it works(in simple terms.. not exact)
It links applications on SD card to internal memory(/data)
its like creating a shortcut on desktop rather than saving the application on desktop...
using CWM(Skin's temporary one)
You can also use Mini Tool (tutorial @XDA)
very noob-ish instructions..(if you are too lazy to open the link :| )
Backup your SD card
Copy all its content in a folder(using card reader or USB cable)
Boot into recovery mode by pressing Vol+ + Home + Power

}
choose "Apply Update from SD card">Choose the Skin's Recovery.
(Use volume buttons to navigate up and down.. home to select)
choose Advanced>Partition SD card
Choose partition size(not more than 1GB) and Swap(choose 0M)
Partitioning should start, now you have lost all your data on SD card(thats why we took the backup)
Restart(Reboot System Now from CWM)
connect your USB cable and transfer back all the data..
While this is going on you can jump to the next step
Open Link2SD(or Install it if you haven't)
a Menu should show up, choose ext3
(If it doesn't show up or you close it by mistake, options>more>Recreate mount scripts)
Reboot
It might ask you to do a quick reboot(popup will have a button)
How to link apps
APP should be on internal memory
Tap create link
Check all options
P.S. Try it at your own risk.
Nice post!

read the instructions(anywhere), you were not supposed to move them to SD card..
No, for example: (USING LINK2SD) i will move taptap revenge to my sdcard to free some of my internal memory, it's supposed to be moved on the 2nd partition not on the main storage, but it is moved to main storage, what should i do? :?

you have to tap create link and not move to SD..
you need the application to be in internal memory before you create link..
when you do that.. app will be moved to the 2nd partition..

There is no fix to that. All you have to do everytime you hard reboot is wait for the scanning to complete. Then look up in your status bar and you will see the "Mount Warning" notification.
Open it and click "Quick Reboot". And you're fine.
It's a minor inconvenience for more space. Besides, it's not like you have to hard reboot every now and then, unless your phone is so messed up it always dies or reboots itself.
whats the difference on move2sd?

CWM backup and Link2SD ?
Hey guys,
im not sure if Link2SD and CWM will work together.
Will CWM also backup the new partition on my SD ?
Is there anything i have to care if i use CWM and Link2SD ?
or are there any other backup solutions who are recommended if you are using Link2SD ?
Hope someone can help me...
Sadly the current CWM doesn't backup the partition. :/

Suppose I've alredy moved a few apps to SD without the second partition and then I create a second partition, will the apps that I've moved to the SD's first part move to the second partition or will they be in the first part itself? If they ARE in the first part, how do I move them to the second partition?
sir after moving the dalvik cache to sd-ext i often get sd card unmounted unexpectedly......then phone hangs.......is there any way to fix ittt!!!!!!!

You need to move them to the partition yourself. Same procedure as normal. Create link.

thx for your answer !
Ok, but if ill do a factory wipe, the extenal partition will not be deleted.
Will Link2SD register the apps at the external partition ?
Is there any other solution to fully backup my system ?
Nope. If you wipe the apps will be removed but all its files will still be in the partition.
Currently, no. You can use Titanium Backup.
not any solution that I know about.

[Q] CM10.1 A2SD Problem!

Hey , I just installed CM10.1 and I read the method to activate the a2sd script , I did exactly as i was suppose to , after installing the ROM i just went into terminal , and typed
SU
a2sd install
y
n
y
as i was suppose to , and when i saw the storage , it said 12 mb used , and the rest free , (i have a 2gb ext partition) just 120+ mb i dont remember the exact figure , and so i assumed that it might not show the exact space but it was implying that a2sd was working because the whole OS could not be 12 mb.
so i used super backup to restore all my text messages , call logs , calender etc and then i restored 41 of my old apps , and in the process (31) it started saying that it is out of space , i tried the same script with not luck.
I tried App2sd (from store) and moved some of the apps to make some space.
It took super backup 3 hours , yes 3 hours to restore the text messages , and i dont want to go through all that again (if possible)
Any help would be really appreciated.
NOTE: The ROM i used before was supernova , it had a built in a2sd , so it showed 2 gb when i went into the storage , but it was too slow.
Waiting for a reply , Thanks.

Thanks for the reply , well i used a partitioning software (the name slips my mind, the one in the noob guide ) , and partitioned it from my computer,
but the reason I could not doubt the partition is because it was working fine in my previous ROM.
Thanks...

And can you tell me about what m2sd is?
I used it for bigger ROMs but they weren't stable , and what about the "Partition SD Card" in HBOOT.
Could these be the problem?

You probably used Minitool Partition Wizard, which makes faulty partitions. Check the partitioning guide in my signature to correctly partition your sd-card.
m2sd is a script to move apps, data, cache, dalvik cache to sd-ext.
The "Partition SD Card" option is found in "Recovery", not hboot. The hboot is this screen:

I actually used the Gparted method , but I dont know why the script is not working.
I used the "Noob Proof HTC Desire guide" and it showed the gparted method , the same as yours.
How do i check if my phone is "S-Off'd".Because I got this phone with CM7 Running in it...

Go into the bootloader and it will say either s-off or s-on. Look at the picture that andoo posted. It says s off at the top.

Yup its s-offd thanks a bunch for the reply.
i guess i will try the s-off method to partition again , because this just wont work...
I'm having the same problem, having installed CM10.1 and previously having a Supernova ROM installed.
However, that used Data2SD instead of A2SD, and I wonder if this is the problem?
When I try try to activate A2SD by using the command "a2sd install", and rebooting, the phone never recognises the Ext4 partition on my SD card. I wonder if the phone is still expecting to use the Data2SD method (where you used to see the LED turn pink then blue whislt it mounted the SD card partition whilst booting - it no longer does this).
I saw a thread [PRJ] [DATA2SD] Flashable zips for converting any Rom to Data2SD, For N1 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=864174 - and wondered if this method can be used to get this working. But it talks about installing A2SDKiller specific to your ROM. Where would I find this?
Alternatively, if my phone is looking for Data2SD, is there anyway to stop it doing this, if it is this that is interfering with A2SD working properly?
