can someone help me update without losing root? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

ok, i recently got galaxy nexus.
it took me 6 hours to unlock it and root it. (yes i'm a total noob.. i followed the guide exactly but my computer won't install the drivers and took me more than 10 tries to finally do it).
so my nexus is rooted and running 4.0.2 NON yakuju build.
now i want to update to 4.0.4 yakuju build without losing root.
what's the simplest idiot-proof method of doing this?
i searched all over but couldn't find a simple guide.
please help me, thank you.

Geez 6 hours...it takes me no more than 10 minutes to unlock and root. By the way this is a question so next time you might want to stick this in the Q&A threads.
Anyway, if your unlocked you should have a recovery or something on your phone to flash ROMS, I think there is a stock rooted ZIP floating around you can use to update. But use the search and browse the development threads I'm sure you will find something.

Did a search off IMM7k6 and found the following link. Hope that helps. Trust me searching is your friend
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1630349&highlight=imm76k

thanks but my phone is not verizon.
i got it from wind mobile... one that needs sim card inside..
is there a guide for wind mobile galaxy nexus?

Just use OTA RootKeeper to backup SU and restore it after you update.

ok i downloaded ota root keeper.
but how do i update to 4.0.4 YAKUJU?
sorry but i need a step by step instruction..

Now that you have the drivers installed, updating to anything should be easy. If you lose root, then just use the GNex toolkit to get it back. Using the toolkit, it should take somewhere around 90 seconds to root your phone.

ok that's good,
but is there a clear step-by-step instruction on how to go from 4.0.2 non-yakuju to 4.0.4 yakuju without losing root?
because all this is pretty confusing to me.
i need a step by step guide... for example:
step 1: go here and download this file
step 2: connect your phone to your pc
step 3: put this file into ...
etc..

If you want to switch to yakju 4.0.4, see here.
If you want to update your non-yakju build to 4.0.4, see if the update is available here.
To root, after either method (given your bootloader is unlocked), follow method 1 here.

thank you efrant,
so if i understand correctly, i should follow your 2nd link and just skip the 1st link, right?
and how do i find out what version mine is?
i know it's not official yakju but i don't know if it's yakjuxx or yakjukkk or something else.

No, that's not what I was saying.
I was saying if you want to convert to yakju, follow the first link. You will be on yakju and 4.0.4. I would recommend this.
If you do not want to switch to yakju (i.e., you want to keep your current non-yakju build), then see if the 4.0.4 update is available for your build in the second link.

ok,
i definately want yakju so i will follow the 1st link and ignore the 2nd link.
my phone just ran out of battery so i will have to go home first then charge it and try it out!
if i get stuck or screw up, please help me!
thank you so much.

hi,
ok i'm stuck.
i'm doing the part C of your guide.
you said extract the file and there should br 6 files ending with .img.
so i got those 6 files and put them into a folder (i named the folder 'yakju').
but where does this folder go?
do i put this folder onto my phone's sd card? or do i just leave it on my pc (they are inside my 'document' folder).
then your guide says : 8) Open a command prompt in the same directory and do the following:
but where do i open a command prompt?
in C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools?

Everything stays on your PC. You need to put the files from the attachment in the same folder as the .img files. Then you open a command prompt in THAT directory.
Did you read the whole post before starting like it was stated at the beginning?

ok i open the command prompt in that directory and when i type 'fastboot devices', it says 'fastboot is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file'.

That's probably because you didn't unzip the files in the attachment into the same directory.

ok, i followed your download link, and downloaded 'Factory Images "yakju" for Galaxy Nexus "maguro"'
then i got 'yakju-imm76i-factory-8001e72f.tar' file... but your guide says .tgz file?
so maybe i downloaded a wrong file.
anyway, then i unzipped it with 7zip and i got this folder called 'yakju-imm76i-factory-8001e72f'
inside that folder, i get this file 'yakju-imm76i-factory-8001e72f' with no file extension.
then i upzipped that file with 7zip and i get this folder named 'yakju-imm76i'.
inside that folder, i have bootloader-maguro-primela03.img, flash-all.sh, flash-base.sh, radio-maguro-i9250xxla02.img and image-yakju-imm76i.zip.
so i unzip image-yakju-imm76i.zip and i get this folder called image-yakju-imm76i and inside that folder i have 5 files : userdata.img, android-info.txt, boot.img, recovery.img, and system.img..
so where do i open a command prompt?
right now my folder structure/tree looks like this:
libraries -> documents -> yakju-imm76i-factory-8001e72f -> yakju-imm76i-factory-8001e72f~ -> yakju-imm76i -> image-yakju-imm76i

ok i think i may have found the problem.
your guide says: '2) Download the attachment from this post and extract the contents to the directory created in step 1.'
but there is no actual link.
can you please verify?

Lol. Think of the bright side guys. At least you're not doing it for him. You'd probably be getting calls at 4am. No offense op. First time is the hardest. But after the first the learning curve is easier.
let it be.

hi @rbiter.
can you please verify?
efants' guide says "'2) Download the attachment from this post and extract the contents to the directory created in step 1.''
but there is no actual link... right?

Scroll down and download that. Extract those files, platform tools into the folder you just made. That platform tools will be very important from here on out.
let it be.

[Q] Help. I'm stuck in the middle of a root of my evo via linux terminal/ adb

So I'm not fluent in the linux terminal. I'm basically illiterate, deaf and dumb. So here I am trying to root using toasts tutorial, How To Root The HTC EVO ~ Part-1 \0/
the forum won't let me post links yet., and apparently the software here thinks some part of the code I'm posting is a link.
Anyway I'm at this step,
- At this point it will boot into a rooted rom.
- YOU ARE NOW ROOT!!!
- rename the PC36IMG.zip on your sdcard:
- plug your phone into a usb port on your desktop and do:
Click to collapse
I may be root but I had a problem and had to redo this step... my sdcard was not being recognized. After reflashing/ updating I was able to access it again.
Now this rename the zip file step... I'm thinking if I rename it the code I'm supposed to enter isn't going to work. What should I rename it to?
How should I enter this code? first off my sd card isn't called sdcard it's called an 8 digit number.
I tried this (can't post the code for some reason) without changing the name of the zip file. I'm thinking I don't have the locations right because I know the file is in there.
I need some direction to get to the next step.
Thanks
Mods please move this thread....
to wherever it will get the most or correct exposure. Sorry if I put it in the wrong place.
i have no idea what your doing...i rooted via the unREVOked method...i had to downgrade to 2.1, then actually root...can u send me a PM with what tutorial your following? and also the current info you have for your phone, like what its running (2.1 or 2.2) and stuff of that nature.... we shall see if i can help, not sure but its worth a shot
okay form what i read you have already flashed the .zip. Make sure you clear your data and cache as these will cause boot loops if not cleared. Also you can rename the .zip to anything you want, this just makes it so the bootloader does not try to install the .zip a second time.

I'm running 2.1. I never upgraded. The tutorial I'm following is in thread #690762 I'll try to pm the link but I don't think they'll let me. I thought unrevoked wasn't a full root. I want to unlock nand. I'm also using Ubuntu here, not windows.

I just removed the .zip part. What is the point of the next step, which I couldn't get to work, if I rename the file?
Code:
adb shell mv /sdcard/PC36IMG.zip /sdcard/root-PC36IMG.zip
Well I guess I'm going to start over and wait for the latest unrevoked to come back out. Thanks to everyone that tried to help. "NO ROOT FOR YOU!"
You have a lot to learn....
First of all, don't rename the sdcard, rename pc36img.zip. Just rename it to anything you want so boat loader doesn't recognize it and try to update itself. Next, you aren't utilizing root. You do have a rooted boot loader, but you are still using a protected recovery and rom. Install a custom recovery and flash a new rom so you can be cool.

Yes, I know I have a lot to learn. I didn't rename the sdcard, that wasn't possible. I figured part of the problem with getting this to work was the path. My sdcard wasn't called sdcard it was called some 8 digit number. I eventually worked around pushing the file to the sd card by installing the phone as a drive and dragging the file to the sdcard.

After I rebooted and updated/ flashed the file, I renamed the file on the sdcard by removing the .zip. I did this via disk drive on my laptop because I wasn't getting anywhere with the command line.
Again this part didn't make any sense to me, not that most of it does, but what was the point of the next command in the directions if I renamed the file?

Right "I have a lot to learn" I thought following the directions in toasts tutorial step by step would have gotten me to that point. I didn't realize I was just supposed to skip stuff when I run into problems. That kinda seems like what your telling me to do. I thought all of the commands were important.
I was hoping you had some follow up insight dkdude.
if you still on 2.1, try this method (just make sure the files aren't corrupted)

CRT Screen Off Mod

Here is an interesting article that will help you if you want CRT screen Off animation like in Nexus S:

Worked with no problems on my SGC with Rogers ROM.
I actually used NinjaMorph to package the modified resources.arsc into framework-res.apk, but I assume the original method will work too.

Probably no. Most likely you will end up with phone freezing on the Samsung logo at boot. framework-res.apk files are not interchangeable between models, maybe not even between firmware versions for the same phone.
Can you post a step by step guide then? I can't really understand anything here
The step-by-step instructions from the link in the first post are pretty much what i did. Read the comment by ravenstark - if you mount the filesystem with root explorer there will be no need to execute the commands in red in section 8.
The instructions from the link in your post cover steps 3-7. You still have to download the file to your PC (1), decompile it (2) and upload it back to the phone once you are done with it (8).
For the first step which terminal do you use??
(Free Your Android guide)
adb. If you don't have you can download it from here. It is part of the SDK and probably the most essential tool.
The command is exactly as written there

What do you mean? If you're using a Windows PC, then just open up a cmd prompt. You should read the guides at the beginning of that page so you know how to setup adb and the apk tool.
The big picture is this. Connect your pc to computer, pull file from phone to PC using adb, modify file on PC, push file back to phone using adb.
For what it's worth, here's a thread I wrote quite a long time ago, some is not applicable for the Glide, but most of it still applies. If you're going to be mucking around in your phone it's best to know how to do a few things first. Read Before Flashing.
When I try and open SDK or AVD (what's the difference :| ) then I just get a quick terminal screen that closes.
It would be appreciated if someone could just create a flashable CWM version >_<
I hate my inexperience @ this. It keeps saying this isn't "adb" isn't recognized, but I've downloaded it! How can I check?!

Ok, so what have you done so far?
What should be done. Assuming you're using Windows, install the Android SDK. Once installed, launch the SDK Manager. Then from the list of installable options, choose the Platform Tools and I always like to get the drivers. Once done, you will have this path, CrogramFiles(x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools, now you could add this path to your variables in Windows, which would be easiest, or copy the Platform-tools folder to C:. Then plug in your phone via USB to your computer.
Now, if you added the Path to your variables, just go Start>Run>cmd, and at the cmd prompt type adb devices. If you see a device you're good.
If you copied the Platform-tools folder over, then Start>Run>cmd, and in the cmd prompt type,
C:
then
cd platform-tools
then
adb devices
Beyond that, can't really help, never use apk tool. Good luck.

Attached to this post is a CWM update with CRT Screen OFF and battery icon with percent for ROGERS ROM. I'm not sure this will work on AT&T ROM.
Make a backup before applying this update so you can restore if you end up stuck on SAMSUNG logo on boot.

Hopefully the file tcfx44 posted works for you. Either way, I highly suggest you learn how to use adb and some other tools if you plan on flashing your phone in the future. It could prove useful some day.
Will this apply over OsiMood? I really am not sure if I am using the Rogers, but apparently I am because in XDA App it says I927-R and same with a benchmark.
Doesn't work for OsI mood 2.1.30 or whatever version was released today. I don't want to give up the amazing UI and stuff of OSi. I'm working fine though, so doesn't look like the install failed or bricked. Any revisions?

[Q] Any way to go from yakju to takju without losing app data?

I'm on yakju 4.1.2 at the moment with an unlocked bootloader but no root. I would like to go to takju 4.2 so I can get 4.2 right now and hopefully get future updates a little quicker as well. The only thing is I don't want to lose my apps, app data, and sd card contents. I looked through efrant's tutorial here and I could get 4.2 takju that way but I noticed it would result in losing all the app data and sd card contents, which I don't want to do. Is there any other way that will allow me to go to takju 4.2 without losing all that data? I tried looking at mskip's toolkit here but I couldn't figure out if that would accomplish what I want or not. I am a bit of a noob at this stuff which is why I don't want to skip step 10 of efrant's method. Thanks for any help!

To switch from Yakju to Takju, you would need to follow the steps below (considering you know adb & fastboot and have set them up on your computer. Also assuming your Bootloader is unlocked)
1. Download the 4.2 factory images for Takju from http://goo.gl/UMbmS
2. Extract files using 7-zip on Windows (you need to extract twice and will get the files as: bootloader-xxx.img; radio-xxx.img and image-xxx.zip)
3. Copy these files to the location android-sdk/platform-tools/ (if you have the android-sdk installed or to the location where adb & fastboot is)
4. Plug in your Galaxy Nexus (ensure Debug option is enabled under Developer Settings
5. Follow these commands:
a. adb reboot bootloader
b. fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-xxx.img
c. fastboot reboot-bootloader
d. fastboot flash radio radio-xxx.img
e. fastboot reboot-bootloader
f. fastboot update image-xxx.zip
This would update your Galaxy Nexus from Stock 4.1.2 (yakju) to Stock 4.2 (takju) without losing any data/apps
*Disclaimer: I have followed the above to the T and moved from Stock 4.1.2 (yakju) to Stock 4.2 (takju) with Unlocked Bootloader, but you follow these at your own risk.
Cheers!!!
Thanks freezer2000! I used a combination of your recommendations and efrant's tutorial and got my galaxy nexus on takju 4.2 without losing any app data or sd card contents. I'll describe what I did below if it helps anyone else. Just a note...I used a mac so some of the terminal commands are slightly different but efrant describes how to modify his commands to work on a mac. Your bootloader must already be unlocked to do this and keep all your apps and app data.
1. Follow efrant's tutorial verbatim until step 6 of part C. (I didn't do part A or step 4 of part C. because I'm on a mac...I also didn't back up my phone like part B recommends)
2. Once at step 6 of part C. unzip the .tgz file, but do NOT unzip the image-takju-jop40c.zip file that is within the unzipped .tgz file. You should have 6 files total after unzipping the .tgz of which I used three in the updating process -- a bootloader-xxx-xxx.img file; a radio-xxx-xxx.img file; and the previously mentioned image-takju-jop40c.zip file that I did NOT unzip. Make sure these files are in the same directory as the attachment that is downloaded from efrant's tutorial.
3. Continue with efrant's tutorial at part C. step 7 and follow the instructions verbatim until you reach part D. step 2; my bootloader was already unlocked so I skipped ahead to part D. step 4.
4. Follow efrant's tutorial verbatim from step 4 - step 8 and stop after completing step 8. This is pretty much exactly the same as what freezer2000 recommended except for freezer2000's step a, which I couldn't get to work (I'm on a gsm nexus so I did NOT do step 8a or 8b)
5. This is where I picked up with freezer2000's steps. Type in the command line: ./fastboot-mac update image-takju-jop40c.zip
At this point everything seemed to stop for about 30 seconds or so and then 4.2 began to flash to the phone. 5 minutes later or so and I had 4.2 up and running.
I'm pretty much a noob at this and I'm sure my description of what I did isn't that great. Anyone who would like to clean it up or explain what I did in better terms/more detail please feel free. I'm still not sure exactly how what I did is different from efrant's method or if there are any problems with doing it the way I did (and pretty much the way freezer2000 explained except for his step a).
Based on my understanding I first updated the bootloader to a takju compatible version, then updated the radio to a takju compatible version, then flashed the takju 4.2 zip file which basically condensed the rest of efrant's tutorial into one step and avoided deleting my apps and data.
I'm sure there is a very good reason why efrant unzipped the image-takju-jop40c.zip, I just don't understand why. If someone could explain it I'd appreciate it.
As always, no guarantees what I did will work on your phone but it worked for me.
That sounds complicated. Couldn't you simply do the following?

switch over
copy TB back and restore

I think you have to have root to use Titanium Backup and I don't have root. Also, I tried TB once before on a nexus one that I rooted and it didn't really backup everything as well as I'd hoped. Maybe it's gotten better since then.

Being a silent viewer on XDA for the last 2 years, I took some steps for granted (as mentioned in efrant's tuts). Glad the info was helpful to you to some extent.
Hit Thanks, if it helped you.

That sounds complicated. Couldn't you simply do the following?
backup with TB
copy the TB folder to your computer
switch over
copy TB back and restore

Kindly correct me if I am wrong, but using TB would ensure the apps and related data is backed up, how about images, music and other files in the sd will be backed up?
Also how can one switch from Yakju to Takju without flashing the factory images (i know there are custom roms based on each variant, but is there any way to got stock without loosing your data/apps)?
I've been using TB since the release of the evo4g and it's always worked great for backing up all apps and app data. Restoring system settings from one ROM to another tends to break stuff though.
I don't know what to tell you to do without root. You could root, switch, then unroot I suppose.
Titanium won't backup all your saved and downloaded files. If you wanted to save absolutely everything just copy and restore the whole contents of the phone's storage.
Do what you like I guess but if you're gonna tinker around as far as changing your ROM might as well be rooted. Just my opinion.

a. adb reboot bootloader
b. fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-xxx.img
c. fastboot reboot-bootloader
d. fastboot flash radio radio-xxx.img
e. fastboot reboot-bootoader
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot-bootloader
fastboot flash system system.img
At this point you still have your recovery, in order to robot your phone, if you want
not working!help!

[Q] Mac OS Yakju flash Help!!

Hello Everyone. I am completely new to android and i understand a bit but only a bit, not much. I have been trying to flash the newest firmware (4.2.2) and i got all of the files prepared and I used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1626895<br /><br />[HOW-TO]%20[GSM%20&%20CDMA]%20Return%20to%20stock%20for%20ALL%20Galaxy%20Nexus%20phones%20%28latest%20JOP40D%29
I've rebooted my device like how it says (with the android guy open for surgery). Ihave all of the files ready in one directory, but i don't understand how to open a command prompt in the same directory which holds all the files like how it says. I really need a good and easy, quick response. Also, will i use terminal or console or something else??
Thank You in Advance!!

thanks, but thats not what i was looking for, i want to use htis guide, and my only problem or question is how to open a command prompt in the directory i made as in step 1 part C. i just want to make sure the computer sees my device, but i don't know how to do this.
Could try this (found after a quick Google search)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1366806
Obviously the file names will be different as the image will be the latest 4.2.2 as opposed to the one used in the guide but it still applies

You have to open a terminal window on your mac...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
OP do you know the path to your destination folder?
When you launch terminal window your default localisation is: YOUR_USER_NAME folder. I have no idea where do you keep your image files. Mine is located at Desktop/Nexus/Stock/422_jdq39* . The easiest way to navigate is in my case just to type:
cd desktop/nexus/stock/422_jdq39
once you're there you can start ./fastboot flash ....
*remember to copy fastboot file to that folder

Done, what's next...
go into terminal app, type the following:
"su"
It will ask you for root access. type Grant.
"busybox dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/sdcard/backup.bin bs=1M count=70"
It will create a backup.bin in the root of /sdcard. ipload that file here. if the file type isnt supported, put it in a .zip then upload it using your pc. if you dont have a pc, just rename the end part of the file (.bin) to (.zip) and upload it here.
@dragoonmx
did he died?
Lets forget him. Do you have OB1?

could you link me a full tutorial for the debrick?
OK download Odin v3.07 search it in Google. then, open Odin, and extract all the files to the desktop.
Before continuing, make sure to backup all of your files because it will be deleted. The file you downloaded before, open it with winrar, then extract the files inside, to the desktop. Open Odin. Get your phone and turn it off. Once its off, hold vol down + home button + power button until you get the prompt to go to download mode. click vol up and it should say "Downloading...". Connect the phone to the computer, and Odin should recognise it. go to the AP slot, click it, and navigate to the file you extracted. Wait for Odin to recognise the file. After, click start, and don't disconnect it until it says "PASS" on the screen, or the phone boots up completely in the set-up. Its recommended that you eject the SD card in your phone (if you have one). Also, make sure only F reset time, and auto reboot are checked.

Hey man! Sorry I haven't been able to respond recently. Sent you a pm, but basically I've been in and out of town a lot the last few days!
Got a couple items that makes the process of creating a debrick.img very easy! Started out with a simple script and it evolved from there!
This one will create a 128mb debrick.img on your internal sdcard. (/sdcard/debrick.img)
Download this and flash in TWRP: https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23196940996969297
That's It! Now just zip and upload!
(ignore the T999 in the filename
It will work on the I747 too)
This next one is slightly more difficult to use, but still easy if you just follow the instructions included in the zip file.
It includes options to create 128mb, 256mb and 512mb images. You should only need the 128mb one but we were using this for testing and troubleshooting when new firmwares were released.
Do NOT flash in recovery. Unzip and follow the included instructions. It will create the debrick.img and then will zip it for you using 7zip.
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=23196940996969297
The first is the easiest and probably all you need. Just included the second in case anyone wants to try it or the first method doesn't produce a working image. (Doesn't fix a brick)
Hope it helps!
