[Q] International HTC One X on AT&T US 3G problems - HTC One X

I'm running ARHD 5.1.0 on my international unlocked HTC One X.
I'm having a problem with my phone on AT&T. It is switching between H and 3G pretty often, and only H actually functions for data. This is pretty painful, especially when trying to stream Pandora.
I'm looking for help on how to analyse what is happening.
1. How can I see what band it is trying to use on 3G?
2. Is there a way to force it to always use H or EDGE, never 3G?
3. Is there a way to tune the 3G radio for AT&T USA?
4. Is it possible that now that the kernel source is released, the frequency issues can be fixed with kernel drivers?
According to Omega.net, here are the frequencies in my area:

Quick additional questions:
Is AT&T screwing with my signal? Would it make sense to modify the /system/build.prop to masquerade as a different phone?
Would modifying the /system/build.prop allow me to disable all but UTMS-II and UTMS-V?
ro.ril.imc.band=900,1800,1900,850
ro.ril.imc.uband="UMTS_BAND_I","UMTS_BAND_II","UMTS_BAND_V","UMTS_BAND_VIII"

I'm going to try disabling fast dormancy and see how that goes ala this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111581

So far this change has had no effect. I still can't run speedtest.net for example, because it drops from H to 3G, then renegatiates to H again.
All I did was change the build.prop and reboot. Any idea if I have to do something more?

What APN are you using? the default one?
Mine changes to 3G, but only when not using data.......I've had this with every phone besides the Galaxy Nexus which stayed on H most of the time.
But I haven't tried streaming music, as I dont haha...I have it all on my phone.
Try using the Phone APN.
Create a new apn and type in phone for "Name" and phone for "APN" leave the rest blank and save, then click it to enable

You are the MAN! The APN was set to wap.cingular. Using phone as the APN I'm finally getting some Speedtest.net results! I'm going to do more tests, but this looks good so far.

I just tried all of that. When I delete apn and set up new one with just "phone" typed in I get no signal at all?

I made a new APN, in the name field I typed "phone" and in the APN field I typed "phone". Then saved, and selected it as the APN I wanted to use.

I did just that but it doesnt give me the option to select it after its saved....

I just received my one x from Singapore today and am not having any data issues. I picked the at&t network when I put the sim in and it just worked.

I spoke too soon. Speed tests were sort of working for me initially, but is working properly now after just blanking out the proxy and port lines on the default apn that it set up.

Removing the proxy and port seemed to get the same results as the phone APN.

Thanks for this, it solved my issue for my HOX too.

3G

Hello!
I need some help with my internet connection. The problem is that whenever the 3G-symbol is displayed in the statusbar, the connection doesn't work at all but when I have "H" it works perfect. Wifi also works perfectly.
I live in Sweden and use Halebop as my courier and I've talked to them and they sent me a new sim-card but that didn't work.
And I have this problem wherever I am so it shouldn't be a disturbance in just my area.
Thank you for helping!

Hmm well the the way UMTS/HSPA+ work, the phone sits at "3G" (UMTS) when the connection is idle, ready to receive power for a connection. When an active data session is started, it switches (quickly) to HSPA+ and makes the transfer, then goes back to UMTS once its no longer receiving or sending data. The phone shouldn't ever sit at "3G" and try to transfer data unless you're connected to towers w/o HSPA+.
It does this because UMTS is a much lower power draw than HSPA+. It'd negatively affect battery life for the phone to stay on HSPA+ at all times.
What you may be experiencing (based on what you say) is your carrier + phone just being a little slow switching from UMTS to HSPA+ when you start a data session. If there's a long enough delay that webpage loads are timing out or apps aren't loading, that's not right. At that point I'd lead to you to check your APNs and other network settings.
Thank you for your response!
Well, I'm not an expert at network issues which is why I asked the question. And therefore I don't know if anything is wrong in the settings.
I have taken some screenshots, maybe you could tell if somethings wrong.

APN tells your phone where to connect to get internet access (You can see it as on your local network your PC will connect to default gateway when trying to access the internet).
Read Here if you want to read up on this

No MMS

Haven't been able to get an answer on the thread. I'm running MIUI V5 and it runs great except that the MMS doesn't work. My 3g data works fine , I just can't send or receive MMS. Is there anything I can do about this? I'm running on PagePlus (CDMA) with no sim.

ive flashed this rom before on my dinc2 and i had the same problem. the way to fix it is go to the google play store and download apn setting shortcut. to use the shortcut ull need to instal another launcher. holo or adw will work fine its just temp. then add the shortcut to the screen then open it. set up ur apn settings the name is VERIZON. apn is internet. the mmsc is www.mms.vtext.com/servlets/mms once you get that set up go into ur regular apn set and set the same thing to that one but leave everything else as is, then save. then reboot your phone. after that your mms should work. its a long process but its the only thing i got to work. hope it works for you.
I well definitely try this! Thanks

Hmm try creatong a new apn in ur regular apn settings along with the other and see if that works. If not maybe try reflashing.
The only way I was able to get it to work, was to disable MMS.apk through titanium, And set up the APN through GOSMS, but then I could only send, not receive. I wouldn't receive a text at all that had a picture.

Hey if u start having problems with go sms i figured out exactly what i did to get mms working in the regular text messages. When innapn settings shortcut go down to mms at the bottomwhere it says test and set the apn settings in it the same as the regular apn settings and then go down to proxy server in both of them and leave it blank then make sure u save both then do a reboot and ur mms should workjust fine. I went ahead and switched back to it and got it set up the way i like it. I realized i was missing miui style and ios7 style but dont wanna pay all that money for an iphone lol plus nothing beats the custimizations of android. Hope this helps this time. Worked for me buddy.

International Roaming with the G3

There is a pretty big bug with the new G3 that breaks international data roaming. This means your free international data will not work unless you follow the instructions below.
Before you leave the country with your G3, you must add a new APN that you need to use while abroad. If you try to roam with the built-in APN, you will get NO data.
Create a new APN and use the following values:
Code:
Name: Roaming APN (or whatever you want)
APN: epc.tmobile.com (no dash)
MMSC: http://mms.msg.eng.tmobile.com/mms/wapenc
APN Type: default,supl,mms
APN Protocol: IPV4
You can leave everything else empty or with the default values.
When you reach your destination (or before you leave), activate the new APN by making sure the bullet point is selected. To avoid issues, you should also change your Network Mode to "GSM/WCDMA Auto".
When you return, make sure you switch your Network Mode back to "GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto" and activate the built-in "T-Mobile LTE" APN.
If you don't have data while in the US, make sure the epc.tmobile.com APN is not selected while GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto is enabled. This combination will leave you WITHOUT data in the US. Using fast.tmobile.com as the APN and configured as IPV4 only will also leave you without data.

I think it's better to keep this separate and make it a sticky. It's clearer for anyone looking for help on why their international data isn't working.
I hope the mods will agree.

Hi.
LTE DIscovery app or any other app says LTE BAND UNKNOWN. I tried also *#*#4636#*#* and also at network type says LTE, unknown.
Do you know how to fix this ? Do you know how I can get to field test mode like in samsung code *#0011# ?
My phone is a zenfone 2 - 551ML.

No no modification, no root. As it was from factory. Only installed all the push updates that asus made ...
I use this in dial:
*#*#4636#*#*
I don't know if this is the field test, but inside the first menu I can change the mobile network behavior.
Edit:
Sorry, didn't read all of your post, On my device the mode for 4g is "LTE/GSM auto (PRL)"
It connects in 4G and when the signal goes bad it reverts automatic to hsdpa.

Think it depends on user-submitted data. It doesn't work for me in Japan either - says the carrier but reports LTE, band unknown.

Good question. Is a good idea to post on asus forum your question http://www.asus.com/zentalk/forum.php
If many people do that they may find a solution.
LTE,unknown if you want it fix, you gotta write a petition to your telco and get them to script it.
most telco won't bother to do that as it is not important value. what is important to network engineers are the decibels, the LAC, maybe CID, the list rate, the smsc number etc.

If you use nova launcher and set up an activity widget, one of the activities is "field test mode". Set it up on the home screen and click it. Or use shortcut master to launcg the activity. Either way takes you to a menu i hadnt been to yet and it may provide answers. It has 4 options: UMTS, UICC, LTE & ASUS CUSTOM. In here you can change your band preferences and switch usb from vendor to asus usb

Cannot edit Samsung S9 APN type to add DUN

Can someone help me understand what is happening.
I have a unlocked Samsung S9 LTE phone with Freedom Mobile in Canada.
i cannot edit my APN Type it just gives me 6 options to choose from.
i want to add DUN to the APN Type but there is no text box to do this.
Someone told me to download ShortCut Master Lite and this can be done.
So i did.
it has all the options but doesn't contain the option com.test.LTEfunctionality
I don't get this and why this is happening.
if someone can shed some light here would be great.
Pzil
Are you sure it doesn't have that setting? Look again closely because it should. As for the APN change I can't find myself in the app, you can do that yourself. Just add a new APN with a different name, duplicating all the settings except one where it says APN type. On that one make it default, mms,DUN Then save the new APN and select it.
Also under MOBILE HOTSPOT AND TETHERING, do you have Mobile Hotspot and Bluetooth tethering enabled?

But with this Unlocked Samsung S9 LTE phone there is no option to add new APN type, you must choose from the options.

It beats me. I've pretty much played with the APN on a ton of phones and never seen that dropdown instead of a text box. Maybe that has something to do with that setting not showing up in the app. I guess it's an international version of the S9 and I've never owned anything but US version phones so maybe that's a setting particular to those models.

i have no idea.
i thought my phone was locked so i paid for a service to unlock it.
they come back to me after 2 days and tell me that my phone is already unlocked, so to confirm i put a friends SIM card from another provided and boom, calls are made and confirms my phone is 100% unlocked.
someone must know why this is happening so annoying i just need my phone to be free to do whatever i want.
Anyone ? understand this.
