Is Move to SD supposed to work with internal or external SD - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Under applications when you choose Move to SD, is that supposed to move to internal or external SD. If it is supposed to move to external SD, what is the correct behavior when you don't have an external SD inserted?
This is in regards to the stock Samsung ROM.

Unless you make some modifications, anything that gets moved to "sd_card" is on the internal memory.
If you move an app to the external SD and then you don't have that card inserted, you won't be able to use the app. You MAY get a force close... more likely, you'll get an "unable to launch" error.

When moving to sd i think samsung originally intended for the app to move to the internal memory being that it shows the available space for the internal memory at the bottom. However when u move apps they actually go to the sd card and if you look closely you'll see the available memory at the bottom is not decreasing in size as you move them.. If you try to move an app with no sd card present you'll get an error about no sd card inserted pop up on the screen.
Edit: On ics it actually says unable to move app. Not enough available space. Mind you i have 8gbs free.

Im gonna say it always goes to internal or "usb storage" I was looking here, shots attached, and you can see at the bottom of the third tab titled on sd card, it says usb storage. so sd card = usb storage = internal sd. All the same. I have a 32 gb external sd and no apps have been pushed over with the move to sd function, they move to usb
Edit:im currently on gb if it matters

It just shows usb storage bcuz it thinks its sending them there. I guarantee if you move those apps back to the phone the available space wont change and if u look at ur actual sd card storage from the storage section you'll see the space free up there. I've already did my research and brought it up long ago. No one payed it any mind. Samsung failed on that just like they failed with the picture orientation when taking pics in portrait mode.. Unmount ur sd card and watch as every app thats been moved become grayed out till u reinsert ur card..
Edit: I also realized that the usb storage has been switched to sd card on ics fe07. However its still showing my internal memory meanwhile my apps move to the external sd..

I can't find any trace of any apps on my external sd card using different file managers. They are all on /sd card as opposed to /sd card/external sd

Yes, this discussion is exactly what led to my initial question.
When I move stuff to sd (on ICS) it says it is using USB storage and the SD section says 0, but it actually mapped the storage through a mount point on the internal SD that is mapped to external sd. The files are then kept in the .android_secure directory on the external SD.
However I read many posts where people are asking how they can move apps to the external SD instead of the internal SD, so that got me thinking in some cases it does the internal SD.

My android_secure folder on external sd is showing empty using root explorer.
I even used titanium backup's function of move all user apps to sd and they went to /sdcard not external

All I'm saying is as long as u keep moving apps to sd the memory for the external card will decrease while the internal wont move a thing. Just go ahead and move them back and forth and keep an eye on available space for both internal/external and you'll see what i mean. Its weird idk. If they were truly on the internal the apps shouldn't disappears after an sd card unmount... I dont believe it ever does internal. At least I've never successfully moved an app without an external card present, i always receive some error message

In regards to stock at the present stock means gingerbread, 'cause ics isn't yet official on the Epic, in gingerbread in manage apps option is, move to SD card or move to phone, I guess phone means internal, and SD card means external. If card i s not present you get no option to move. That is in regards to stock.

For me, on stock GB, Move to SD ends up moving to external SD. Move to Phone is only present after an app is moved to (external) SD and if I press that, it moves back to /data on the phone. It doesn't move to internal SD.
I am under the impression that there is some factor which causes some phones to install to external SD and some phones to install to internal SD.
I am trying to hopefully discover what that pattern is because I know some people prefer one behavior and some prefer the other behavior.

Well if you figure it out I'd be interested in it. I would love too have my apps go to the internal. This phone scans the USB storage a lot faster than it does a sd card. I'm sure that would stop the whole apps going blank after removing an sd card when apps are on sd. I have so many apps on the sd it takes a while to fully scan and sometimes one or two don't load and are grayed so i have to unmount and remount to get them to show.. This phone struggles when it's scanning both media at the same time. If I power on without the sd card and put it in after it finish scanning the USB the sd card loads everything perfectly with no grayed out app icon.

I would like to know as well. I would appreciate having the ability to choose external/internal sd when moving apps to sd.
The way storage capacity totals are currently displayed make what is happening a bit confusing. when I first got my phone I spent a couple hours experimenting after recognizing the behaviour noted above.

Honestly sfhub i think all e4gt move to the external and some ppl just think its going to the internal. The way the On Sd section displays the available space for internal usb memory is enough to confuse some. I believe this phone is set up to look for a mounted sd card to move apps. That's just my opinion on the subject..

That's what I thought too, but I believe some people can install/move to sd even without external SD inserted.
My unit cannot do this. It will only install/move to SD with external SD inserted, and even though the UI makes you think it is installing to internal SD, the actual files show up in the .android_secure folder on the external SD. If I don't have external SD inserted, then it will produce an error when you move an app to SD (or if the app tries to install to sd on its own). Therefore I believe some units are actually installing to internal SD because some people are able to move to SD even without external SD inserted.

Can someone (sfHub ) explain this, I think some of us need some clarification.

I've moved several apps to SD, first of all, currently you will receive "unable to move app to SD" if you're running an ICS build, secondly when I tried on GB, my external .Android_secure also stayed empty, the space remains the same, and the apps show up on
/sdcard, with the USB storage space reducing, not the external sd card. Not sure when the fix will come for ICS, hopefully soon, but sounds like maybe a broken partition somewhere if you are moving to sd and it doesn't go to USB, as it should...AND your external space is changing. Went to Samsung online support, and it is true, app to sd moves from "phone storage" to internal sd aka USB storage.

I see Sfhub is experimenting with Stock GB. However, I do not see mentioned that for this to work everyone should be on the same baseline to prevent variations to the results. Once enough data has been collected, then you can vary from the baseline (ie. try a different ROM) in a controlled environment to get accurate data.
Short version: rules & guidelines should be established to discover the correct answer to the question.
Edit: Also, to prevent tainted data, EVERY phone should be wiped, formatted & odined to stock. Formatted specifically since the discussion is related to SD storage.

Here is the data I've gathered if it will help.
I am running pure Stock EL29 Rooted (via Sfhubs one click), both SD's have been formatted as well. External SD is a 16 GB SD memory stick.
I will try to breakdown the screen captures, please also note the device and usb memory displayed at the very bottom of some of the screens also:
External SD not mounted
1. Bare, nothing installed
2. Installed Angry Birds
3. same - different cap
4. same - different cap
5. Tried moving app to external SD (which is currently not mounted)
External SD mounted
6. Angry Birds moved to SD
7. same - different cap
8. same - different cap
----------------------
9. Angry Birds on internal memory (before move)
10. Angry Birds on external storage (after move)
Conclusion (from this test environment): Stock EL29 Gingerbreak 2.3.6 - If an application is moved to SD, it is placed on the external SD by default. If one does not exist, the move is not possible.
Edit: If you compare screencaps #9 (before move) and #10 (after move), storage is dropping on BOTH internal and external SD at the same time after the app is moved to SD. The app is rather small so I cannot say exactly how much (or what) is moved where, just an observation.

Identical test results with Calkulin's 3.0 GB ROM. I'd put money on Blazer 4.1 coming up with the same results but I don't have the energy to keep flashing GB roms.
It's beginning to look like most of the roms based on stock GB 2.3.6 will have similar results as long as they haven't been specifically tweaked to move & run apps from internal SD storage.

Internal/External SD Cards

Just got my GS2 today and I must say this is the easiest phone I have rooted to date! I have been working my way around the OS and found that apps are not seeing my files on my External SD Card. Is there a way to sort of sync these? I guess I dont mean sync, but have apps search both internal and external storage for files? Take beautiful widgets, I have a ton of images on the ex sd card. When I launch the app to apply one of those images it looks in phone storage and gives no option to search the ex sd card.
Thanks

easiest thing would to move everything to the internal sd card. i dont like how the phone sees SD card (internal) then from there i have to navigate to the folder called 'external sd' to look at my microSD files.

Exactly, but what good is it to have an external card if the apps dont use it? If I have to move everything to the internal card, what can I put on the external card and be able to use/access? None of my apps recognize the external card, lol.
i use my external sdcard for music & movie business and use the internal for everything else. i sync back & forth between pc & cell a lot so having a CLEAN (aka, none of those extra android folders) sdcard makes browsing and syncing much easier, cleaner, and organized. also, without that android bloat i can tell exactly how much goodies i have just by looking at the size of external sdcard
ps: external sdcard is more or less just a subdir on the internal sdcard.... its /sdcard/external_sd if i remember correctly.
i just slap my movie files onto thte internal sd since i delete them afterwards... didnt realize 16 gb is a lot of space lol
I removed some movies from the internal memory but when i go to storage, the available free space is the same as when the movies where there. I held the movie file down and selected delete when the pop up menu came up.
Any suggestions to clear the inetrnal memory or do i need to format the usb storage which will delete everything from internal memory?
Thanks,
Ian B

[Q] System storage, USB storage, SD card?

Hi all, I feel like I'm completely lost at how Android or Samsung designed this.
First to clarify, I have the SGH-T989 with a 16GB microSD plugged in.
Under "Settings" - "Storage", I can see three categories: "SD card", "USB storage", and "System storage". It reports the size of my microSD card under "SD card", then it seems to divide what I understand is the internal memory into two parts: "USB storage" and "System storage". So "USB storage" has a total space of 11.25GB, and "System storage" has a space of 1.9GB.
What does it mean by "USB storage"?
And also, under "Applications" - "Manage applications" - "On SD card" tab, it is reporting the size of the "USB storage" on this tab. It seems to think the "USB storage" (which from what I understand is actually part of the internal memory) is the "SD card", and not treat my real microSD card as the "SD card". More importantly, if I move some app from system storage to SD card by clicking on "Move to SD card", it will be moved to the "USB storage" instead of my real microSD card. What is going on here? Does it mean that I'll never be able to really move an app to my real microSD card? Then what's the use of an external SD card?
System storage is simply where your apps are installed. usb storage is technically just your onboard storage. so if you move the app to USB storage it is technically no longer in the system storage. To me it's a good thing. I like to keep my actual external sd card for movies and pictures and music. Also those apps should still be pretty fast as they not on the slower sd card. ...
This is just how I would explain it to a friend.

Well for me it is actually different....if i'm moving app to SD then it is going to external SD and not the USB storage. Is there some setting which i need to change so that it move the apps to USB storage and not external SD.
edited post I thought i could trick the system into letting move and app to internal sd by unmounting the external sd card but it didnt work.
Edit:
Actually the "Move to SD card" will move the app from system storage to external SD card, not the USB storage.

You are right. I was wrong.
I'm curious why the storege is so very low. Isn't the phone 16GB? 11.25 of which 8.9 open is low.
the rest of the space has been partitioned for the internal apps
But I can only use the 1.9G to store my apps out of the 16G internal storage? If I move apps to SD card they get moved to the external SD card. Is there a way to move them to the rest of the internal storage (which is called "USB storage" on the phone)?

You mean when you move to SD card it actually gets moved to the USB drive, right? I don't like the way Samsung did this. We should have be able to move app or anything else to either internal, USB, or SD card. If we root will be able to do this?
I have the AT&T SGS2 and I'm wondering the same thing. I don't have an external SD card and my system storage is about to get full. I still have 9GB free in my USB storage but there doesn't seem to be a way to move my apps from system storage to USB storage. What do I do? Why is it partitioned this way?

I'm actually wondering about the same thing. Although it claims it has 16GB internal storage the actual size that we can install apps is just 1.9G, rest of it is partitioned as some kind of USB storage that can't be used to install apps, very annoying...
Also I only have about 20 apps installed on my system storage and they're all about a few MBs each. I only have about 400MBs of system storage is free. What could be taking up so much space?
Edit: Okay just found that a few games were storing their data on the system storage even though the system says it's installed on USB...
USB = System Internal Storage
try to move as much stuff as you can to the External SD card
\sdcard\external_sd\
that's how it looks like when you install stuff

so let me rephrase the goddamn question(s)
WHY WHEN WE MOVE APP TO SD CARD DOES THE PHONE MOVE THE APP TO THE REMOVABLE microSD CARD AND NOT INSTEAD USE THE INTERNAL STORAGE (11.2GB) WHICH IS MORE PLENTIFUL THAN THE 1.9GB SUPPLIED?
when running some apps/games from a microSD card they cause force closes, data loss, and other wacky things to occur. <- is WHY we dont want them stored there...
IS THERE A WAY TO SELECT TO USE THE INTERNAL SD CARD (11.2GB INSTEAD?
...not as far as i can tell, ive tried it all includng removng the microSD card and attempting to install an app, the phone says not enough space even though i had 1.9GBs remaining in the "USB Storage" partition
The T989 SHOULD fil the INTERNAL CARD FIRST in my opinion....
i have over 200 apps/games on my device and ive only had it for ~2 months no media, only apps/games and i have 200mb remaining in the partition allocated for apps and 1.9GB remaining in the "USB Storage" partiton,....I DONT want apps/games stored on my 64GB microSD card, i remove it often, thats where my media is stored....
heres another kicker, the T989 reports a low memory warning and inabilty to store apps in the Intenal (1.9GB) partition at ~200mb, even though most apps are FAR smaller than anything that would impact that remaining space

That 'why' is a bad question and you should feel bad for asking it. It was designed that way in the phone. As to your second question, a proper one, try this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd&hl=en. It lists in the description what you asked for but seems ambiguous from the pictures.

It's just the way the partitions are designed in the phone.. It's not necessary for it to be that way but that's the way this phone is designed and there isn't much you can do about it either..Other than moving apps to you external sd card which you apparently don't want to do there isn't really any other options

Programs uninstalled after reboot

Hi!
I was looking after this issue since my holidays. My Glide just uninstalls random applications that are on SD card (external_SD) after reboot. The replication is 8 out of 10. I had almost 30 apps on the SD card (mostly games).
What I did:
-restart the launcher
-wipe/factory reset
-change microSD cards
-reformat microSD card
How can I tell apps are uninstalled?
-checked Market
-checked TiBu (Backup/restore > Uninst. filter)
As I said, different apps are uninstalled every reboot. If I again reboot my device, the app(s) previously removed will be installed and another app(s) is removed.
Temporarily, my apps are transferred on my Internal storage (2gb) and so far, no issues. This quite puzzles me for I did not encounter any issues using my microSDs in file transfers, media and etc except for this one.
May you have similar issues and have solutions for them, please share and it will be greatly appreciated.
I posted this in the subforum for this only happened on my Glide (did not see in my Captivate and Infuse with same micrSDs). If you see this as inappropriate, please leave me a message or reply, or simply report my post.
Thanks
Correct me if I am wrong but apps moved to SD actually install to the 4gb USB storage in the unit (/sdcard). Nothing goes to the external SD (/sdcard/external_sd) unless manually moved there. If you want to install a program to the SD you have to use root utilities.
Doesn't help you with your issue but you should be able to completely remove the SD card and see if you continue to have the problem.
I haven't noticed this on my wife Glide but it does happen on my Skyrocket.

No your wrong when you hit the button move to SD Card it actually goes to the MicroSD card. I tried hitting that button without a Microsd card and I get an error it says not External card detected or something like that. When I installed my MicroSD card it moved the apps to it.

You are correct. Good to know. I verified that I have a few apps moved to SD and they do not work when the SD is removed.
However, I can not replicate the OPs original issue. I put the SD back in and the apps are launchable again. All apps remain after reboot. When the SD was swapped was it with a different brand/model. I am using an 8gb Sandisk.
I could not replic

responses are greatly appreciated....I also tried moving two apps on SDcard after transferring them to the internal (2GB) storage. my glide automatically removed one of them after reboot. Well it's not a concern until i ended up running out of space on my internal
I noticed this as well on some apps I just reinstalled them on the internal and will not transfer them to the SD I again. I guess some programs don't want to be transferred to SD.

I have the exact same phone, I think you are confused. Move to SD never moves to external SD. Why else would apps like 'Apps2SD' exist then?
Apps2Sd allows you to map certain folders that are hard coded to the sd internal. For example game loft games install on the internal applicaton 2 gig partition a small installer and then Download extra content on the internal sd card. Apps2Sd allows you to map the game directory from the internal sd to your micro sd card. Similar in linux with a sym link. The Move to Sd from the Os (gingerbread). Allows you to alleviate some room from your 2 gig applications partition and move apps to the Microsd card.

Apps2Sd allows you to map the game directory from the internal sd to your micro sd card. Similar in linux with a sym link. The Move to Sd from the Os (gingerbread). Allows you to alleviate some room from your 2 gig applications partition and move apps to the Microsd card.

Could it be that whether it move to internal or external SD depends on the app? None of my apps have been moved to the external microSD yet. Maybe it is because I have extra space on my internal microSD? Also when I go to Manage Apps > On SD Card, it shows the space used and remaining on the internal SD(USB storage).

if you are rooted, look for a folder named .android.secure on your Glide's hard drives. That folder contains apps that are moved to SD card. I see mine on /sdcard/external_sd/.android.secure
Hi, even if this thread is an old one, the same issue happened to my phone:
I can't use the internal memory to move apps because they are uninstalled every time the phone is rebooted. What is the clue?

Moving apps onto SII SD card

Hi guys I think this is the most appropriate place for this thread. This is also my first post so go easy on me. I have a SII (rooted with CM9) and I'm having problems moving apps to my external 8gig MicroSD.
The problem is that this phone appears to be partitioned so there is internal memory and "SD card" memory which is also internal I noticed this before the purchase of the MicroSD. After I inserted the microSD and turned on my phone I went to locate my SD using 'ES File Explorer' my phones "SD card" is located under "/sdcard" and my ACTUAL microSD is found in "/mnt/emmc".
My questions are why is my actual SD identified as emmc (I'm not even sure what that means)
and
How can I get my phone to move apps to my external microSD and not what the phone thinks is my SD card which is actually internal phone memory
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
The bad news is, you canĀ“t place apps on the real external SD card.
But you could place other thing like pictures and music there to save space on the internal storage (internal sdcard).
Ps.: I think the meaning of emmc is External MultiMedia Card
There is unfortunately no easy way to move it to external SD. However, if you are interested to dig more, I'll just say that I am doing it by binding a custom mount point. It is a dirty method though.

[Q] Move apps to the EXTERNAL SD card??

Any way to truly move apps to the external SD card?
I have just recnetly learned that moving apps "to the SD card" in the settings>apps menu doesnt truly move them to the external SD card.
Why is that?
I dont have many apps yet, but it seems the apps i do have slowly get larger and larger as i use them and they save user data. (game progress for example).
Id like to know that I could at least move things that i dont care how fast they load to a truly external SD card (along with my wallpapers, ringtones, etc)
Even if theres a manual way via USB, thats cool. Just hoping someone with more than about a months worth of experience with a captivate glide (or really, i guess any phone that by default wont let you) could give some advice.
thanks!

You have sd card integrated to the board, its not true sd card. You can swap internal sd to external sd, then you can use same move function to use external micro sd card as application storage.

So theres no way to just manually tell it to move there without messing up whats already on the internal storage?
The Android system still has no option to move app to external sd. You can copy everything from internal (built-in) sd to external and apply change-fstab.zip to make Android think that your external sd is internal and vice versa. Works on every 4.4 rom. No performance drawbacks if using class 10 sd card. Worked for me flawlessly and thanks to bubor for this great feature.
And for manually... There's an app called Link2SD. It's some sort of workaround. You make second partition on your external SD and move apps there, leaving links for Android system on your internal storage. You can find it in google market, be sure to read instructions first.

I remember trying link2sd on a friends tablet recently. it recognized certain apps as moveable, but when i actually tried to move them (on an SD that i had already partitioned) it said failure every time.
But im not sure i want to switch my storage entirely. I would just like to allow, say another 4 gigs on my SD card (with the other 4 being for wallpapers, ringtones, etc). i have an 8 gig card right now.
Then you should try link2sd here. Basically, no other options, unless you wish to emulate Link2SD work with some scripts and move apps manually. I saw some patches for Lenovo phones to combine internal storage or something like that, but they will not work on Glide obviously.
