Newly installed KF won't hold Home Switcher settings - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Newly installed KF won't hold Home Switcher settings.
I change the default launcher UI to ADW or Apex, and Trebuchet comes back on the next context change. For example, when I go into Settings, ADW is my launcher on the way in. Come back out, and I am in trebuchet again. Clicking "Set Default" will not hold.
I have a root shell on it. Can I edit a config file or `echo 1 > somefile` to get the setting to be persistent?
Do other people have nonpersistent home launcher settings?
I have already cleared cache and data for ADW and home Switcher, BTW.
I am on gedeROM 1.3, BTW.
EDIT: Well, to somewhat answer my own question, I turned off the other launchers by moving them to OFF_ApexLauncher.apk.off, etc. Now, only ADW has launchability. Seems OK, but is a crude solution.

You can always uninstall Home Switcher, unless it's something you particularly use.

My goal was to have the ability to switch between launchers, if it became necessary.
Unfortunately, without Home Switcher, I'd be stuck on Trebuchet, as well. I find ADW to be cleaner and more customizable.

I think I know what's going on now. When you have multiple launchers the system usually asks you which program you would like to use to perform a certain action and it usually happens when you hit the home button. It's supposed to give you the option of setting one as default, which is probably why it keeps going back to Trebuchet...You might have inadvertently chose Trebuchet as default.

Trebuchet and Apex were installed, with Apex being the default, I believe.
As i was re-adding my apps from the Play Store, I noticed that i had a full paid version of ADW Launcher. So, I installed that and a couple of themes.
I tested and it worked. So, I installed Home Switcher, and set ADW as the default launcher. It worked for a while.
I don't know what the trigger was, but at some point, the behavior switched back to going to Trebuchet (which has a different geometry for rows and columns, hence looks chunkier than ADW). No matter what I did, I could not get Home Switcher to change back to ADW and have the change (clicking "Set as Default") become persistent. Going in to Settings, then back to home, would switch Launchers.
So, i just renamed the apks for the other two launchers. I removed Home Switcher, and now the tablet works as I wish. It's just a brute-force approach, as root will let you perform. ;-)

[Q] How to Get ADW Launcher Back after choosing Sense as default??

I downloaded ADW Launcher and I accidentally chose HTC Sense as default launcher and now I can't get ADW to come back up. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling ADW but still nothing. Any help please? Thanks in advance!

Theres an app called Home Switcher for that. Its free
Yeah he;s right, get Home Switcher from the Market. It's sick and makes it reallt easy to switch. But without an app, you can click Settings > Applications > Manage Applications, then scroll to and select on HTC Sense, click and then select "Clear defaults". That will manually remove the defaults set to the "home" app as preferences.
From there, when clicking the Home button, you will be prompted for which Home launcher you want to use. If you only have Sense installed, it will just show your screen previews. If other launchers are installed, it'll ask you for which to launch and you can set one as default.
Awesome, thanks guys!! Much appreciated.
You could also always just goto market and uninstall awd and reinstall it, it will then give you option when you hit home button again.. Hope this helps..
Or.......
You can also go to settings, applications, manage applications go to htc sense and clear defaults.
the home switcher tis the best option. It's much faster then going to settings>applications>manage applications and clearing defaults.
Thanks
THANKS! Home Switcher wasn't doing the job, but clearing the defaults on Sense made all the difference.

General Sense/Launcher question

I'm debating going to launcher pro but was wondering a little something.
If I just change my default launcher to launcher pro, is sense then disabled or do I have to remove all the sense widgets from my current sense setup first??
I'd like to leave my setup as is and change over to launcher pro, in case i decide to go back to sense.
Thanks all!!
I haven't used Launcher Pro, but have gotten quite familiar with ADW.Launcher. In my experience, you don't have to do anything to Sense when you start using an alternate launcher. If you clear the defaults for your alternate launcher, you can pop right back into Sense and still have everything just the way you left it.
well i was wondering if i set LP as default, can i delete htc sense from phone? like the dock
You don't have to do anything with Sense. You can switch back and forth between the two (download Home Switcher in the market to easily switch back and forth). The only thing is Sense widgets only work with Sense (you can't add the Friendstream widget to one of your screens when using Launcherpro). The dock you see with Sense is different than the dock in Launcherpro.
Yeah, used to go from one to the other when I first started dealing with the different launchers. Can still have your regular "Sense" setup and switch between your "ADW" launcher (or even LPro for that matter). Pretty handy and quick. Just hit the home button when not checked as default. If you need that home button to display all screens at once, there are swipe functions for that.

If you are rooted you can delete /system/app/rosie.apk, but it wouldn't really provide any benefit. It doesn't start automatically and take up ram or anything.
Defaults wiped
I have tried this on a couple roms so far, same problem.
I have Fresh Evo running currently, with Launcher Pro as my choice for daily use.
Before it was Baked Snack.
Every time I reboot, or change battery, etc, I have to go through the default choice again. It won't save. I've checked through applications and once they're set all looks fine. I do know how to set them that way as well.
But once the phone has been cycled, I have to give the choice again at start and when exiting gmail or the first app I exit.
Anyone else know of this? Fix? Ideas?
I don't think it's a rom issue, which would be a lot easier to get an answer for.
Thanks.

ADW Launcher

I've been using ADW since I started playing with CM several weeks ago. I really like it and have no plan to switch to anything else. That said, I am confused about different versions. I know CM ships with one version, but because of the magic of froyo (I think, anyway), a version that I downloaded from the market many moons ago keeps automatically reappearing every time I flash a new nightly. And until I select one as the default, they both appear as an option when I press the home button. Eventually, I get it reconfigured back the way I like it, but it's kinda time consuming and a bit frustrating.
One of the versions has an "Edit" button when you press the menu key while on the home screen. This pops up a nice little aerial view of your home screens and you can add, delete and otherwise manipulates those settings. However, it's not always there and sometimes takes a little fiddling to make it show up. So far, it seems to show up by accident or of its own volition. I've also played with the options to back up and restore ADW settings, but it never seems to remember my ****. Default screens, number of screens, shortcuts, etc.....sometimes they are there and sometimes not.
If anyone can make any sense of the versions or point to some place with some info, I'd love your thoughts. FWIW, I did actually try to search, but ADW is so common, the results were like finding a needle in a haystack.
Thanks!

CM6 uses a decently customized version of ADW since it is open source (LauncherPro is a superior launcher but CM6 is all about open source....)
Just delete your market version of ADW.
So Cyanogen's version is the one with the "Edit" button on the home screen menu? I suppose I could just delete one and see what happens, eh? Worst thing that could happen is I need to reinstall it, right?
Yeah CM6 has that edit button.

Lol to each his own. I have used ADW for a long time now, and I used LP for several weaks. I stoped using LP right around the time that he was starting to have a paid version. I didnt stop using it for that reason. I personaly like ADW. If you ask me ADW is the superior launcher. The only think LP has over ADW is a customizable dock, I loved that option. Other then that LP falls behind on some key features like swype gestures, the galaxy s app drawer and settings to adjust the speed of the app drawer opening and closing as well as settings to adjust the bounce between page changes on the home screen as well as settings to adjust the speed between pages. Furthermore, ADW also allows you to customize the size of the widget you are placing on the homescreen. ADW also allows you to customize icons with a custom icon image (think better cut here) it has a hidden dock bar that allows for tones of apps to be placed below it. Yes LP has a similar option but you can only place a max of 15 icons there the 5 you normaly use and 10 more no biggy though 10 should be enough actually 7 is for me. Oh and you can adjust the coloms and rows to allow for more or less apps on the screen and in the app drawer. Just saying man lol.
Its still comes down to the user and what he likes. I just like to keep the sides equal. Also I know LP has the notification counter icons but after not using them for so long I actually prefer it without. Wow I just said that.. that was a big issue for me when first changing from LP to ADW. LP is also more sense then ADW considering the creator is making some great sense like widgets. Great work from both developers I just prefer ADW, the options appeal to me.

If you have two ADW launchers then most likly google is restoring your apps when you flash a new rom. My suggestion is turning that off and restoring the apps manually. Manually implies finding them and restoring them from the market if possible. Titanium backup is great but you should be restoring an app you saved from a diffrent rom on to a new rom and so forth. I am not sure why you have to ADW launchers this is just my theory.
Have you tried removing ADW from your market downloads or uncheck automatic update? I don't use CM6 so I'm not sure if the apk info for the edited ADW version isn't being recognized by the market. But on the thing about the "edit" button, I don't think that's a custom CM6 option because I have it on my market-installed ADW.
For some reason I thought it was 2.2 that implemented the automatic backup of apps, but it makes sense that it's google doing it behind the scenes. I removed the market version of ADW with no problem and hopefully it won't come back next time I flash a new nightly CM.
Thanks to everyone for your help.
Yeah remove the the ADW that is located in your market downloads. Also the menu edit was impliment with version 1.1.2-.4 and is not just a CM6 option.
It is 2.2 that back ups apps I am not sure how that works though.

WidgetLocker + GoLancher = trouble?

When i shut my phone off and turn it back on it will get to the widget locker lock screen like it should but once i slide to unlock there will be no icons on my screen? I have root and am using widgetlockers home helper thing it also did this using lancher pro.
I usually have to turn the phone on and off a few times before the icons will show after unlock.
Any ideas?
Maybe you should set it to default when it asks which one you want to use..
Or I haven't understood your problem
COnfused.com
I would ask in the widget locker and go launcher help thread in the main android app section. I use both in conjunction and have had zero issues but I know the last go update was fixing some icon issues so make sure you update.
Also more info could be helpful. Such as what rom, kernel, etc
go lancher is set as the default. It's once you unlock from the lock screen there will be no icons.
I'm using the stock ROM rooted KE7 2.3.3

I'm not sure what you mean? I really haven't did anything but set go lancher as the default lancher and in widget locker i had to set it to use WL HomeHelper (optional) if i don't you can double press the home button and bypass the screen lock.
It's random when the icons don't come up after a unlock.

Are you using custom icons? If not, or even if so bring it up to the go dev team. Definitely looks to be something on their end. Have to tried to replicate it without widget locker?
Nothing to do with widget locker I think (I use it too in conjuction with Go Launcher) however there seems to be a bit of a bug in Go Launcher where icons randomly disappear - the last update was supposed to have fixed that but hasn't really, some still occasionally go missing from my home screens too. The easiest thing to do for now is to put all your apps and shortcuts how you want them, then backup the configuration from within Go Launcher preferences, next time they go walkies just hit restore configuration and job done. Just remember to back up the config every time you add or remove stuff.
I'm using go launcher and widgetlocker for 24 hours now and having no problems at all, initially the launcher was slow, but after 1-2 hours when I used it again, it was smooth, maybe cache related thing

I am using go lancher themes from the market. It did it again the whole screen is blank after a unlock no icons at all only the wallpaper shows. Lancher Pro did the same thing.
I can go into go lancher settings click on themes and nothing comes up.
I used widgetlocker and go launcher ex. I have not had any problems.
Preferences -> Operation settings -> Screen rotation (switch off)
I had the same problem, got rid of it by applying this setting. Wish you luck
Already had the rotation off.
If i hold down the home button after i unlock and bring up the task manger and find widget locker and do a force close all my icons come back.
As a note, I get this exact same issue with ADW Launcher EX.
Happens only right after a reboot, and not every time - WidgetLocker Lockscreen appears, I unlock and find a completely blank screen (Only the notification bar shows). Pressing the menu button brings up the ADW Launcher Ex menu though...
Restarting ADW Launcher doesn't seem to help, only rebooting a couple times until it does appear seemed to help me, but I'll try force closing widget locker itself next time.
I initially set ADW as default launcher, but then set the WL HomeHelper as default in widgetlocker settings, which I believe is the correct way to do it to block the home button from auto unlocking etc.
Edit: Restarted the phone just to test, and force closing widgetlocker does do the trick - minor annoyance only I guess

Yes it is for me it seems to only do it when i'm in a hurry lol
I use widgetlocker and GoLauncher too.
I've had the same problem this morning too, but a reboot of the device fixed the problem.
I've had similar issues without Widgetlocker installed, so I think the cause is to be found in GoLauncher. But the phone reboots very fast so I am not really bothered by it.
I used LP and switched to GO Launcher.
GoLauncher is set as default launcher at the first boot.
In WidgetLocker i disabled the homebutten with homehelper to stop the unlock by the homebutton.
No the problem:
When i reboot, there is a message that says "go launcher is not your default launcher." (Attach 1)
When i click ok, i'm in the assignments of WidgetLocker (Attach 2)
When i disable the homehelper in WL there is no problem when i reboot.
But i want to disable the homebutton...
Any ideas?
BTW: LP is disabled!
I'm using Litening Rom 6.1
I had exactly the same issue and stopped using Go Launcher as a result. It would only happen sometimes but it would require me to restart my phone. I now use ADW instead and it works fine.

[Q] Fire Phone & Launchers

Hi all,
I have jumped on the Amazon Fire Phone. I'm already a prime member, using an old LG P930 with Cyanogenmod, but as you can imagine the hardware is a bit old. For $100.00 (since I'm already a prime member the extra year of Prime would have been purchased anyways) this phone was a no brainier for me. My question is, what launcher are you guys running? The Nova launcher works well, but gives an error when installing widgets. Trebuchet fails to launch unfortunately. So far my favorite launcher is Cheetah Launcher by CC Launcher. Everything works, it's clean, and allows the use of my widgets. (Pandora and 1 weather is a must for me). Swiping up to go back works just fine. The only thing I don't like is you don't get notifications of emails or messages in the dock. Also, the default AOS status bar seems a bit weak. It notifies you and the notification goes away. I have been seeing something, wanting to grab it later, and then forget. :|
Anyone else got any launcher or good apps that go well with them to make it more user friendly? I'm very impressed what a simple launcher and side loading apps will give you with this device with out downgrading it or rooting it.
- Jeremy
I've tried nova launcher and Doodol launcher. They both seem to work with the exception of wallpapers
Anyone have any idea of what needs done to get wallpapers working?
On 3.5.0 wallpapers only work with root (xposed tweak)
Yahoo Aviate works well with sll of their built in wallpapers (no widgets work, and you can't select a picture from your gallery though)
Buzz Launcher works with wallpaper support (including your own images). No widgets work though.
I tried a bunch of launchers today and those two are the best so far
So annoying that widgets didn't work on Nova, which has always been our preference, so I set up GEL on wife's new phone. So far she's ok with it, except for being confused how to get out of the Google Now panel (she thought it was an app and was trying to swipe up to get "back" not realizing it was just the left most panel of the launcher).
One thing I did try to set up also that isn't working is Pie Control. It worked for a little bit when first loaded, but subsequent attempts to activate it haven't been successful. I suspect the swipe-in capabilities are hi-jacked by the Fire OS.
Another annoyance is the inability to make direct-dial shortcuts.
I installed, or attempted to install the GNL and wasn't successful. I'll give it a go again. I think I remember the install took, but it wouldn't open the launcher. Still, if looking around, check out that Cheetah Launcher. It just doesn't give notifications in the dock.
Speaking of notifications, does anyone know of a good notification bar? The stock bar on this phone doesn't show an icon that there is a pending kik message, voicemail, text, etc.

So I installed the Google Now Launcher .apk again. It then stated I needed google search. Downloaded that .apk. It told me to clear my launcher defaults, I did, but Google Now Launcher isn't an option in the launcher selection. Any idea?
Never mind. I restarted the phone and is good to go. I seem to like the Cheetah Launcher much better so far!
I use Vire Launcher. Its built in wallpapers work perfectly and all widgets work and can be resized. It also has some cool effects.
tried vire launcher and dodol launcher. neither launcher seems to update my missed call count or text messages count properly. ie always showing missed calls.
anybody having this issue as well, or know of a fix?

I've installed a few launchers, okay - a lot of launchers. Below are the ones that I found that give the count of SMS, missed calls, etc.
- Nine Launcher (not a huge fan)
- C Launcher Lite (not bad - not very customizable)
- Solo Launcher (pretty slick - but outside widget support doesn't work)
I'm currently on the hunt for a good status bar or notifier.
The Google Now Launcher seems to work very well without any lag. Its very light weight although not very customizable. So far it seems to be a good place to start until other launchers become more compatible. I added the dashclock widget to the homescreen, with better weather addon, plus the other alerts I need and this seems a complete setup right now that matches my Nexus 4 setup.

Thanks, but this is only working at the home screen, not in the apps menu.

I don't think you can make folders on the apps menu. I don't seem to be able to on my Nexus 4 with its stock launcher, so its no surprise you cant do it in the Google launcher we are loading.
Thanks for this question though. I thought the launcher was limited to 3 pages but I found that you can create more empty pages by long pressing the home screen and moving the existing side pages to one side of the home page, then dragging icons to the side that now has no page to create a new page. I tried simply dragging icons earlier but it would not form a new page until I moved the old page first. Strange process but it works.
Fire Phone Lauchers - Wallpaper and Widgets
Hi All -
I've gone through just about every launcher I can find to find one that both wallpaper and Widgets work on... With no luck.
Buzz Launcher has wallpaper working, a number of launchers have widgets working, but none with both...
Has anyone else had any luck with both? Do we know what makes one or the other not work? Would rolling back to older versions of some of these launchers (pre-lollipop and kitkat) work?
Thoughts? Help? Suggestions?
Thanks!!!
Has anyone tried Action Launcher Pro? I wonder if it gets along with Fire Phone (no root).
I've tried at least 20 different launchers today. The only one that has wallpaper and widgets working is still Vire Launcher.
