Screen Difference Discussion - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hello XDA!!!
My sister's boyfriend has the Samsung Galaxy SII Sprint Variation and I noticed that his screen was MUCH more vivid than my own screen. Colors were deepers, more saturated and just overall looked more brilliant.
I checked his settings and both of our screen brightnesses were all the way up.
We both opened our facebook applications and the top of the facebook app where there is a blue bar is much darker and saturated and deeper blue than mine.
Has anyone else seen another variation of the screen? I am concerned for my phone as it may be a hardware issue or it isn't calibrated properly or something.
Please discuss/ respond/ help me out.

I Just compared mine to my buddies ATT SGS 2 and the screens look pretty much the same to me..
When i look at the colors compared to my wifes sensation ours looks super nice..

That's odd, it is really bugging me that my screen looks more dull than his (I always have to have the best )
Anyone know of a way to recalibrate colors on the screen? I just restored to stock!

Sprint variant has a color saturation option in their display settings menu. They can set their screen color mode to standard, dynamic, etc. Ours doesn't have that option.
If his was set to a more vivid setting, it would explain the color calibration difference.
Also, our phones use different graphics processing than the Sprint variant, so a comparison doesn't really say much. Galaxy SII is a branding name, the phones are vastly different though.

Is there a way to acquire this option via an app or something?

Nope. It has to do with the Exynos processor in the Sprint/International versions. It was what allowed supercurio to create color calibration tweaks. Our phone has an Adreno 220 gpu and our color profile coding is vastly different.
That difference was part of the reason why Supercurio couldn't complete a quick fix (kernel/app) for color tuning on our device, but could for the Exynos equipped phones.

You can use something like Screen Adjuster from the play store, but adding color layers will alter your screens black production (or lack thereof rather) and it will kill your battery.
Here's the app, I wouldn't recommend it though.

I find it irritating. I wish their was some sort of calibration we could do to saturate screen colors.

Your issue has nothing to with processors. It's the screen itself. Let me guess, yours is manufacturer in Korea right? There's a major thread floating here that discuss this issue alongside the spots, mura, and lines. The batches that are manufactured in China seems to have the improved screen you're looking for. I can bear witness to it myself.

So what does everyone think of the resolution, specially those who are coming from higher resolution devices? It is up to par?
Thinking I might go pick mine up later today.

I did miss threw resolution of Photon for the first.5 min lol
But the color reproduction and screen size make up for it.

Yup. Sure do. But as already stated once I got my launcher and homescreens set up I don't even effin' care anymore. It could use a slight DPI tweak, but, nothing the native resolution can't handle.

Lol. You've gotta be trollin'. One of the major downsides to qHD is that apps that weren't made properly wouldn't fill the screen, and that's annoying as hell.
No, everything looks fine...fantastic even. Very fantastic. Stunning.
Sux...I barely got into setting mine up before I decided to head for a 100% charge. I got it at 45%, but, I plan on leaving the house for a while later and don't wanna risk it. (turned off so it charges faster)
I'm expecting it to be good battery life, better battery life, but, nothing staggeringly better.
Trolling? Hardly.... I just picked up mine own. I remember you from the 3d forums. How's it going. I assume your happier with this device? I sure am so far...

True that
I dont know why ppl lying about photon display I saw it at the sprint store and it sucks than 3d let alone compete with epic touch.
In my opinion, this display looks much better than the pentile qHD I had on the Photon.
The way pentile cheated at resolution meant that its supposedly high-resolution was actually kinda a sham. When zoomed all the way out on webpages with fine text, it was ugly, and when scrolling through text like on the apps list, the text shrunk while it was being moved.
Here, the full resolution is actually usable, meaning that it actually looks higher-res than the Photon did to me.
The whites seem a little less white next to my Epic but I have a feeling they may be muted a touch to help with battery or something along those lines. I actually prefer it like this. My Epic is blinding at night even with brightness dropped all of the way down.

anyone play with the screen mode setings for like dynamic and such?
Actually, I'm having one issue with resolution..
I have some images of landscape I took while on vacation last year with my EVO 4G, used them for wall paper.
Put them on here (tried them on my daughters original Epic as well) and they images are fuzzy..
Any idea why?

Screen resolution

Coming from a sensation the resolution of the SGS2 is so large, it doesn't look as crisp or sharp. Is it just me? I don't understand why with such a large screen they couldn't go any higher.
I keep hearing people say this but try looking at a high resolution photo. This screen is awesome but its the apps that are having the issues not the screen.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Yeah plus if you're coming for a sensation, which isnt a great phone BUT the screen resolution is amazing, of course you will notice the difference but I'm sure once you get use to it you'll be fine. I love this phone.
Something with a higher pixel density is going to look a little more crisp probably, can't deny that.
This screen looks pretty amazing though and anything in HD or games in high resolution look fantastic on it. I am comparing it to a Galaxy S2 Int and I don't think it is that bad really....the extra size is actually kinda nice for me anyways.
The Sensation has a smaller screen with a higher resolution than the SGSII's, so of course it's gonna be a bit crisper. But our screens are still vibrant, vivid, and absolutely gorgeous. Screen size > resolution, IMO, and I prefer a system standard resolution to qhd. I don't like long, skinny screens, plus most apps are already optimized for 480x800.
Hey guys,
I've had my Galaxy S II for about 48 hours now. I love every single aspect of the phone except the screen resolution. It's definitely manageable but I do miss the increased resolution found on my HTC Sensation.
Are there any tricks/mods/apps that can be used to increase the screen resolution without making the phone laggy and/or unstable?
If so I'd greatly appreciate some input. If there aren't, well, then I'll still love the phone as is.
Thanks in advance.
Also, I should mention that I tried the Pixel Density Changer app from the market with no positive results.

For those of you who have done it, I have a couple of questions:
1. How is the battery life when you use the increased resolution?
2. Have you noticed any drops in performance?
3. What problems have any of you run into?
Sorry for the questions. Thanks in advace
I don't know how you guys can increase the screen resolution without changing the actual screen. Well I suppose you can.... but that won't make the images any crisper or sharper by any means, at least I don't think so. It would still be, at max, 800 x 480. Can't go any higher than that, just lower.
Unless someone can prove me wrong?

if this is really the galaxy s III i'm going to keep my nexus

Here is a leak that seems to be true of the galaxy s III.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Ei61wWOr4w
Only 1GB of ram and looks like a bigger version of the S2. Quad core is nice but not sure about the battery. What totally made me not want this only 8mp camera, I was going to get it if it was 12mp in heartbeat. but 5 vs 8 price for performance not really worth it.
There is another leak where in fact it says it has a 12mp camera
Too me id rather have development over a camera and quad core
Why on earth do I need a quad core phone?
Also if you want good pictures get a real digital camera

I rather just have a polish OS. I don't want to be carrying a camera and a phone, I rather have good camera in my phone. if I had the S2 camera or the iphone 4S, I wouldn't care as much about a 12mp camera. I know many people here believe the nexus camera is not that bad, but I think that's just being ignorant. I think its pretty lame for being newer then the S2 and the camera being worst. I can go on and on about it also not having a SD slot and pentile screen.

Nah, the phone is over hyped. Normally I always stick with my contract for two years. But the reason of me switching so fast is because the faster I sell the nexus phone, the more value I get. Not to mention if the Galaxy S III does come with a 12mp + LTE internet for AT&T i'm going to switch in a heartbeat.

I owned a GS2 before my GN. The difference is suppose to be with jagged edges and not colors and you cannot see any of that in the GN like you can on lower res devices that use pentile displays.
For color, we can already improve that with kernels and apps for the GN so still don't see your point...
Will a Super Amoled plus screen look better, I am sure to some degree it will but to complain about the screen we have now is ridiculous.

Then pentile screen is not that problem
1. 1gb of ram is more than enough for a phone, heck most phones with 512mb run fine
2. The stock color settings are what make the super amoled hd screen appear inferior to the super amoled plus, that can easily be fixed, the whites on my screen are some of the best I've seen.
3. Quality of a camera isn't dependant on its mega pixels, that only determines the size of the picture, the quality of the pictures is entirely dependant on its sensor and lense, the gnex has a decent sensor, but it's nowhere near the best. We still don't know about the gs3's sensor, so we can't judge how good it's camera is yet.

I don't need a phone to tell me which of the captured photos is the "best"
one.
I felt certain things can be better but that eye recognition & pop out player was amazing to me (if you can do it with all videos like YouTube, etc.) I'll sell my other SII today...

On a 4.8in screen, I don't think the eye can determine the difference between 1080p and 720p. The difference is literally microscopic. On a 60inch TV you can for sure tell the difference though.
I was impressed with the eye sleep option, liked the continuous flash that determines the best photo. Like that you can pick up the phone while texting and it automatically calls someone. Also like the quad core processor. It apparently has gotten impressive benchmark scores. The ICS with touchwiz looked pretty good to me, along with the additional toggles as well. All in all I was happy with what they released.
Honestly, it would be my absolute dream phone if only it had two things: a NOTIFICATION LIGHT/LED, and of course AOSP. Fortunately, one of those can be fixed with ongoing development, but BLN just doesn't quite fill the void for me. I miss that notification light. :/ otherwise, I like the curvy simplicity of it, and the dark blue finish rather than flat black is a nice choice!

Even on a 60 inch screen it is nearly impossible to tell. Its just all part of marketing and wanting to have the "best"
As far as the phone, I am honestly not that impressed, I think the GN is still the better choice, sure it may have nice specs and all, but when it cokes down to it. We need a phone that will have the latest software and this will he no different than the pickle we're in right now. We'll be behind again in about 3 months with next OS. Of course, samsung did a great job; however, i think ill just be sticking with my gs2 for now. In the US, it'll most probably get a Qualcomm dual core processor so besides a few improvements from the gs2, its nothing major. but definitely a nice phone!

I dont feel theres nearly enough improvements to justify upgrading sure would be fun to have something new tho haha
im torn, I like alot of the new feature the phone offers, but the phone looks like a nexus/gs2, nothing drastic like we all hoped for. Kind of like a iphone 4s imo. What do you guys think about the upcoming nexus phone? that might be the game changer, since rumors has it that it will be a upgraded version of the s3.
when does google usually unveil the nexus phones? at their google io thing in june?
just my 2 cents
Disappointed
Overall - disappointing.
Great performance and features - absolutely!. 2100mA battery should = longer usage times (even with 4 faster cores). HD res is great. Improved UI. Some very nifty accessories. 8mp camera is fine as improved software & performance makes the picture - though Carl Zeiss optics would have been great.
4.8 screen getting too big for a phone. Was hoping for an ultra thin bezel hence reducing size.
But pentile matrix? Heavier? Thicker? No quality materials? Old Mali GPU? No LTE? 1Gb RAM? And featureless design? Very, very poor for a flagship phone that's meant to be setting the standard...
Heavier I understand (bigger battery weighs more). But there's HD Super Amoled plus on tab7.7 - why pentile here? Competition has phones 6.9mm thick. HTC, Sony, even Motorla & Huawei have better designs (not to mention Apple) and materials. So it's not as if any of this wasn't achievable.
I have a SGS 1 & 2. The S2 was well ahead of the competition, bar materials and uninspiring design. Was looking forward to a groundbreaking S3 on all fronts. It's very good, but good isn't good enough these days.
Samsung needed to tick more boxes to place this phone undisputably out in front leaving others to catch up & not easily surpass.
In no rush to get one now, and possibly might not. Will wait to see the competition - eg: Sony Ion, HTC, even (lord help me) Apple; or maybe wait for SGS4.

The GS3 will have the LED Notification light.

[Q] Note 2 screen different from the others?

When I compare 2 Sgn2 side by side then I notice there is a difference in both the screens as one is bit darker and sharper whereas the other one is lighter and normal
Both has screen protectors of the different company's . So can it be because of that or I think my handset screen is faulty ?
I compared some sgn2, and I found some screens are different, but every screens were same w/ same firmware. So, I can't say any clever, but it's maybe related to installed firmware also.
Both the firmwares are same and with the latest updates installed
Maybe different screens from sharp sony etc??

As I have checked both the devices came from diffrent locations ie Korea and Vietnam
Can that be the reason ?
Probably the protectors. I've tried a few different ones in the past few weeks and notice a VERY big difference..

Thats wat I was also thinking but was not sure that whether diffrent protectors can make the diffrence but both was the glossy

Does that mean I have a faulty display

What about the screen mode setting? Settings>display>screen mode.
Everything is set up screen on dynamic , power savings off , adjust screen tone off , brightness on high
Still it's bit dimmer and white is on yellowish tone

If this is true than that sucks... I've been comparing the screens of my Note 1 and Note 2 and unfortunately the screen on my Note 1 is sharper and brighter. Videos are more detailed etc. My Note 2 is made in vietnam, I think, because of the manuals inside says "printed in vietnam".
I think I'm going to return my Note 2 as I'm not that happy with the screen quality.
And LOL at the above post. "these things r common in all the devices which includes apple also.". Why do many people always have to use tu-quoque arguments and point at apple?
You can check where your model was made by looking under the battery, on the device.
Screens are in order....

Best to see on the phone itself.
Mine was made in Vietnam and the screen seems fine to me. I think the differences are down to the grades of glass used.
I had a similar problem with my iPad 3 and apple said that they use different grades of glass that can cause tint/colour problems between devices.

Thanks. On the battery it says "Cell made in Korea, assembled in Vietnam". On the phone itself it says "Made by Samsung".

Both the Note 1 and 2 have way better screen than the S2, no argument there! But what I'm talking about is the screen of the Note 2 compared to the Note 1. Even though it's very sharp and good, it's not as sharp and bright as the Note 1.
The difference might not be noticeable for some people who don't care about that or hasn't had them both so they can't compare. But for me it's very noticeable..

The Note 1 has a pentile screen which makes everything look slightly more jagged than the Note 2.
