[Q] Looking to start ROM development but have a few questions - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Basically, Im looking to create a ROM based around stock Sony Ericsson. However, after looking around Google for a couple of hours I've only been able to find things about developing ROMs for specific devices like the Motorola Droid :S
I know the basics of ROM development (extreme basics) and I'm perfectly comfortable using and exploring Ubuntu
Do any of you lovely people know of any tutorials on developing ROMs for the Xperia Play? I'm literally stumped here :S

A Question For The Dev's.. Xperia X10 Source Code

Hi All
If This Post Is In The Wrong Section Then Mods Please Move It
Im Fairly New To The Hero Scene Having Updating From A G1 Not Too Long, so i have no idea how the hero works too well
I noticed from one of the Dev's twitters (Benhaam) That the Xperia X10's Source Code Has Gone Public, And As Someone who loves to try all the different flavours of Android, I Wondered If Anyone Can Or Is Developing An Hero Xperia Rom... I Understand If Anyone Has Any Criticism With This Post, But Just Remember Im Fairly New To The Hero Scene
Would Love To Post A Link To This However I Am A Newish Member and still arent allowed to post links
I would love to try out an Xperia X10 rom, i know that someone over on the HTC magic forums had a port but it was removed as the developer didnt want to spend anymore time on it.
Once Again Sorry If this is in the wrong section..
I know what you mean its cool trying out all the different UI's available.
I'm sure someone probably will attempt to, but as far as I know its still running on android 1.6 so it drops the motivation slightly. My other concern would be that from all the reviews the UI (rachel) runs like dog on the x10 and thats got a snapdragon running the show so I'm not sure how well the hero would cope.
But saying the it seems hold its own pretty well with the latest 2.1 roms..

Yeah I Use Villain Rom Myself As My Main Rom And Have Read His Blog With Him Mentioning The Samsung UI, looking forward to that
I'd be quite surprised if the source code that Sony Ericsson have released is much more than the kernel source that they are required to release under the GPL. i.e. nothing to do with "Rachel".
At some point over the weekend, I may download it and take a quick look.

[Q] Looking to Develop for DINC

Hi Guys,
So I looked in the general android development and DINC development but did not really find much. Basically I am looking into getting into Android Development. I just graduated Clarkson University yesterday and am going to work for Procter and Gamble and am going to have a lot of free time nights/weekends and want to get into this. As for my coding experience, I do not have much in java, however, I have taken a few comp sci classes in high school and have used MatLAB and LabVIEW a lot during college as a Mech E. So I am very familiar with coding and the logic behind it, just a matter of learning a new language.
I have started by downloading the Android SDK (just updated to 2.3) and have been doing a few of the tutorials they have on developers.android site such as Hello World, however this seems more geared to developing apps, which I do have a few ideas for. But what I would like to get into right now is some ROM development for the DINC as I have a few ideas for this too and would like to start with this.
So I was wondering if anyone could give some device on how they got started? Just pulled the code from HTC and opened it up and started looking around? Do a lot of you use Eclipse for development as they seem to suggest for apps? Is there any good guides to getting into ROM development as I have not quite found any? Also does anyone have any ideas and need some help work on things, I think this would be a good way to learn.
Thank you,
Brendan

Just realize it is a lot of work. You can start from pure source, or from CM, or CVPCS. Starting from pure source will give lots of problems but will probably teach you a lot about the system. Either way those links should be of some assistance. Look at CM device setup to see how device setups work. He has a working setup for most devices.
Alright! Another one comes aboard. Good luck man, keep us posted, ask questiions here cuz most are very knowledgeable and willing to help out. Dont give up, get us something 2.3 and very much thanks in advance for doing what you do.
Glad to see a thread like this. I have been interested in doing ROMs for a long time now but didn't really know where to start. This should get me running
If you run into any problems don't hesitate to contact me. You can reach by twitter at @linuxmotion or pm me for an email. Though I am relatively new, I can surely help if the you want some. Hope those links helped

HTC Desire S - Modding / Overclocking / Tinkering

Hey guys,
I am new of this forum and also to the world of Android, not too sure what to make of it yet but its early days.
Right, down to business, what can I do with the handset to perhaps tinker or modify it? purely from a software point of view. Rather taken by the idea of dual booting but I guess this is something that is not possible with this phone yet as the bootloader is probably locked.
Anyone offer a brave soul a few pointers?
Try a new ROM
If you want to tinker, try rooting the phone (voiding your warranty) and installing a new ROM. Cyanogen Mod 7 and Miui are amongst the most popular. Be prepared for lots of reading before doing anything, but it can be a rewarding experience.

Forum Etiquete

Been a member on the HD2 forum for a while and was happy and confident to run ROM's by the likes of Laurentius26 and was well pleased with his work.. Now I am the owner of a Desire Z and on a completely new platform.. I have tried looking through the many threads of cooked ROMs and Rooting etc but the Desire seems to be at odds to some of the other Android phones when it comes to customising and I still feel I am missing some basic stuff, so as I am obviously a bit blind, can someone just gently point me towards some useful and helpful threads to get my brain back in gear.. cheers..
Have you tried http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?s=&daysprune=&f=750 ?
Thanks for that, I hadn't even realised that they had spilt the forum group into the Z and non Z, cheers..

Where to start?

Hi,
I've had and Android phone for years now and love them, but only recently have I started to get into the world of a properly rooted device such as flashing ROMS and apps, but would like to start doing stuff like this my self, such as building ROMS from scratch and developing apps, but don't know where the best place to start learning is,
Anyone have any good starting tips and points to get a start from?
Any help is appreciated thanks!
