[Q] boot loop...(sort of) - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I just flashed the newest version of the codename rom (JustLoveCodename-Android-(Alpha1)2.0.0-RC to my epic 4g touch. I also flashed the Google apps pack that comes with it. It seemed nice at first, but then I tried using the market and it just kept telling me there was a server error. I tried re-downloading it from third party sites but nothing was working. So I went to flash back to Calkulins rom. As I got into recovery mode, it seems the phone somehow changed itself to another recovery system (It might've been CWM) instead of the rogue one I had prior from the initial root process. I tried flashing anyway and the a picture of a dead android with his front opened up and a red exclamation popped up. I rebooted the phone to see what would happen. It brought me right back to Code name's rom. I tried it 3 more times yet the same thing happened every time. I also tried a battery pull. It did not work. I am thinking of doing one of two things: I am going to either go through the initial root stages again or I am going to try to delete the Codename rom from my SD card and try flashing another rom (preferably Calkulin). Please tell me if this is the right thing to do or if there is another method of fixing this problem. Thank you for taking time to read this. I really appreciate any help. FYI: My phone is still in working condition, but I am stuck using the Codename rom which I really do not want to use anymore. I just was able to get ES file manager working and i checked my external sd folder, but there is nothing in it. When i look at my storage from system settings, it says i still have the memory on it. So why is ES not displaying it? =( I re-installed rogue cwm and flashed calkulin's rom again and everything is fine. Heed my advice and be wary of the Codename Rom. Editor's, you can delete this thread if you wish. =)

K. The reason you aren't getting to the old version of CWM is because you flashed Codename. Codename is an AOSP ROM which has been known to cause bricks when flashing with Rogue. Because if the bricks the developers opted to but include CWM of any kind in the kernel. What you need to do is find a replacement ROM and download it. Once you've downloaded it you need to flash the EL26 stock CWM (you can find it in the OP of the link below) then use it to flash your new ROM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=295021
Well you're at it is suggest reading the How Not To Brick Your Phone thread in general.
Good luck!

Codename rom is an AOSP rom so your external SD storage will be under /emmc and not /sdcard/externalsd. That's why it wasn't showing up. Same thing with CM9 and AOKP, not because it doesn't work. Also I wouldn't recommend flashing anything ICS related from rogue recovery, js.
And recoveries changed because with our phones, the recovery is packed into the kernel itself so when you flashed Codename, the recovery changed to the stock recovery included with the roms kernel. Hope that clears it up lol.

If you want a fresh install, the best way is to Odin the el29 kernal. From there, get into your recovery and wipe and flash away.

[Q] Calkulin's Rom won't allow recovery..

So I I've had 2 different recoveries so far that have worked fine.. both came from Rogue though. One was from the 1.5 kernel (Hitman) which installed CWM Touch recovery, the other came with the normal recoveries based off CW 5.0.2.7. They were working fine until I installed Calkulin's Rom(2.8.1). Not sure if they're just incompatible or what, but when I go to recovery it shows the background image of the recovery but none of the options show up. It shows for about half a second and then it goes back to the original boot screen, then to the 2nd screen and turns on. So it basically skips right through the recovery and reboots. Do I need a new Rom or can I fix this? I really like the battery life and visuals of Calkulin's Rom and would love to be able to keep it.
EDIT: One more thing.. Since I installed the ROM, I've been getting market error 492. It doesn't allow me to install anything in the market..
I haven't tried a full wipe yet, so I guess I'll try that and then see how that works with the recovery and Rom..
I did the same thing to my phone this week, and I'm running Blazer, so i'm sure it has nothing to do with either ROM.
Not sure how I caused it but with so many folks running both without this error, I'm guessing that your issue (like mine was) was probably some how self induced.
I flashed back to stock and started over, and things have been working great. Might be worth a shot flashing back, or restore a backup and start fresh.
Haven't seen the market error before. I'm sure someone here has
Good Luck
If you got it off here, could you show me which stock you flashed..?
Everything you need is in the Epic 4G Touch Android Development section
Here is the post I used from Sfhub

Watch the videos by Qbking77 They walk you thru everything step by step. (I hear his video intro rif every time I close my eyes now so you've been warned) Makes it super easy.
I would read everything you can and watch the videos before you get in too deep. I've had this phone since December, and just flashed my 1st ROM this week cause I've been reading up, and learning all I could before I jumped in the pool.
Well I've done all this with 2 phones before but I've never had this happen.. normally I just get the Rom and I'm good to go..
I think I must've gone wrong somewhere when I originally rooted through a stock rom.. It already seems to be more respondful.

Try booting while holding the volume up and power button.
If that does not work, flash recovery from rom manager, and that should get you into recovery to flash whatever kernel/recovery u want.
I've done all that.. None of it works.. I'm currently ODIN'ing Factory Stock Rom with root. Hopefully after that I can redo all of these and eventually end up with a working, corresponding Rom and kernel..

[Q] Custom Kernel Problems, HELP!

OK, here it goes.
I have a R800x CDMA Verizon Xperia Play
I had bootloader unlocked successfully by alejandrissimo.
I am rooted.
Today I decided to try the MIUI rom for CDMA.
It required custom kernel, and recommended Kieren's darkforest kernel.
I installed that kernel via fastboot with no problems.
Upon turning on phone, i get a page that says Sony, then I get ANDROID page.
Then it just stays on ANDROID. I can tell that it is not frozen because I can see the waving lines going across.
SO, I decided to just go back to stock kernel then try again.
BUT, I cannot get into fastboot!!
I hold search while connecting usb, and the led blinks blue once, then continues with boot.
I am at a loss.
I Can get into CWM.
Please Help!
Edit: I just noticed that after holding search then plugging in USB, the light blinks blue once. Then about 25 seconds later, the light turns solid blue for about 3 seconds. Then just to orange for charging. During this time, I can not get fastboot to recognize device, nor does my computer recognize any devices.
OK, first - don't panic! I had some issues myself with this, but it's easy to resolve.
First - if you want to return to stock, the easiest thing to do is to download flashtool from this link:http://androxyde.github.com/Flashtool/
And the FTF of the stock ROM from here: http://www.mediafire.com/?u70ci3bdzak3u9e
Follow the directions on the Flashtool website for how to flash back to stock. This will make your phone just like it came out of the box. It does not touch the SDCard.
Second - Make sure the kernel you flash in fastboot is the one intended for the ROM you want to install. Also make sure you copy the zip file of the rom you want to install onto your sdcard. Then enter into CWM and do the following:
- clear data
- clear cache
- clear Dalvik cache (under the advanced menu)
- clear Battery Stats (same menu as above)
Then use the menu "install zip from sd card" (or whatever it says ) find the zip file you copied onto you card and load it. Reboot when finished and you should be good to go. Please be aware some ROMS take a long time to boot up the first time around.
Good luck.

ok, small problem with that.
when I click to install flashtool, it tells me that it is not available for my region (Central USA).
I do have a nandroid and titanium backups made just before flashing.
Use this link - I forgot about their link blocking us. But use that site for instructions.

Having just unlocked my bootloader this weekend as well, I don't know what to tell you there. But since you can get into CWM, reverting to stock is a good way to go. Then try flashing the firmware, etc again.
still stuck

OK, thanks for your help, but I am still stuck.
I can not get the device to be recognized.
So, now I need an alternate method.
I will attach the kernel that I flashed, maybe I could flash a ROM that could be compatible.
I tried to flash MIUI v4 from near the end of the MIUI port for CDMA thread (pg 9, I think) , which paxchristos and a few others reported working fine for the R800x
I flashed the kernel that was listed to use in the same post.
But, when I tried to flash the ROM, CWM told me that it was not compatible with my device. It checked the ro.build.fingerprint and determined that it was not compatible.
Maybe another rom would work, and then I would be able to work on it from there

Yeah, that seems to be the wrong boot.img. It should be called boot-v2.img.
EDIT: WOW - I just reread your post after posting mine and realized I pointed you to the same spot!
Try this ROM which is a version of CM9 that Chevyowner got working for our R800x. I know it works because I'm using it. http://www.mediafire.com/?1xnh54i6lvnnh73
It is the same one, i just renamed it because i thought kernels had to be boot.img to flash correctly. I will try that rom when i get home.

just an fyi, you can name kernels whatever you feel like (I'm not sure about spaces, I use linux, so I never have spaces in names anyways )

Flashing now
OK, I just downloaded and flashed the ROM about 3 minutes ago.
I cleared everything just like you told me to.
It installed with no errors.
You may be right about long boot times for first boot, otherwise I have a really bad kernel.
It has just sat on Sony screen for the past 10 minutes.
It hasn't even went on to the android page that I got before.
Hoping that it will Work.
Assuming that it doesn't, what would be my best next move?
Can I flash a kernel (Such as doom_lord's CDMA Kernel) via clockwork?
I think I saw a video about it for the Samsung fascinate, however I seem to recall something about needing an s2 file or something??
I will update as soon as I get something. (hopefully good news)
Update: It has been about 20 minutes now and still on Sony screen.
Now it has been 30, im starting to get worried. Should I plug in? Should I just let it be? Should I let it die? Should I battery pull?
Major Edit: I got impatient and just battery pulled. I then tried to get into CWM, but failed. THen I got a bright Idea, why not try fastboot with the new rom. IT WORKED. I WILL NOW TRY TO FLASH A NEW KERNEL AND SEE IF THAT HELPS.
it should not take 30 minutes to boot, only thing i can think of right now is to redownload kernel (boot-v2.img) and reflash that.

is this your kernel, or someone else's? If it's yours/you have a working copy, could you post an md5 so the op can double check it?

nope not my kernel, and i doubt i have an original working copy as i added 2 lines so i could mount my sdext partition.
Finally!
OK, I am now back up and running.
I went through every kernel and rom for CDMA play, and got nowhere.
I ended up getting Doom's kernel to run. It worked, and booted to android... Then stayed at android.
Then I decided to flash my nandroid i made, and am now working on stock rom W/ DoomKernel.
The ROM seems to be lagging a lot.
Since everything is *working* now, what kernel/ROM combo can anyone verify working for the Play R800x CDMA.
I would really like CM9 or ICS based roms.
Thanks for your help getting me out of this mess!!
EDIT: Nothing seems to be working!! My touchscreen seems to be non responsive, no phyiscal keys except for the power key seem to be working with my original ROM now!!! Maybe somebody could attach a copy of the stock kernel for my device, so that I could start from scratch.
If you're using keiran (darkforest) cm9 kernel the md5sum for it should be: 74a5be2bf95322b8c45780d9daeda4fa

@zeeky120 - I'm sorry you're having so many problems. For me when everything seemed hosed, I started over by using Flashtool and flashing the ftf file I gave you links for. Then once it came back up as stock, I started again from scratch. Depending on what your goals are, you need to flash the proper kernel for that. Then get into CWM. Clear DATA, CACHE, DALVIK CACHE before you do anything else. Then load via zip file the rom you want to install, making sure it matches the kernel you loaded. And, whether necessary or not, I always wipe the big 3 again, just in case. (Call me paranoid, but it helps! )
Ok now up and running on stock everything working great just like out of box. The only thing I have done so far is to root. I want to do it right this time. I would like to flash cm9 based miui for r 800x. Could anyone provide detailed step by step instructions and links for download. Thanks in advance.

Closing Notes
This thread has reached its end, because my problem has been fully solved. Advice to future users, always clear the big three, and when in doubt: use flashtool to reboot the ftf. Right now I am up and running on CM9 (use the link in Chevy's signature to download. I can verify that it works great on CDMA. (faster download speeds than stock!!!) Thanks for everyone for all of their help, and I hope to be contributing to development in the near future.

[Q] Any possible ways to unbrick a softbricked SGH-I747

So here's the deal,
My ATT Galaxy S3 is half dead, and by that I mean soft bricked and I still believe there is hope in fixing this thing. Here's the entire story, everything was fine before I updated to CM 10.1 via ClockworkMod Recovery. At the time I was running the stable CM10. So I grabbed a copy of GAPPS, The CM10.1 nigthly, and a lean kernel to help improve battery life. I did the factory reset setting in CWM, then flashed CM10.1, Gapps, then the kernel. Then I did the usual after you flash a kernel, clean the cache, dalvik cache, and fix permissions. When I rebooted, the Galaxy S III boot logo was purple and glitchy, and my thought was, "Oh nooooo I bricked my phone." I had a backup saved, but after that glitch, everything was gone, so I had no backup and now I was panicking. I put my ext sd card in my reader on my PC and put the stable CM10 zip file on it, so i flashed it in CWM. My phone booted up normally. But here's the catch, no keyboard. Everything worked fine except my keyboard which kept saying, "Android Keyboard(AOSP) has encountered and error" or something like that every few seconds and would disappear just as fast. But here's the even funnier catch, everything that was my phone was still there except in a folder called 0, and in that folder another folder called 0, and in that contained a 'snapshot' of my phone as it was. CWM would not read the backup folder, or any of the files. So then I put my phone in download mode and flashed the stock ICS Samsung/ATT Rom called I747UCALG1_I747ATTALG1_I747UCALG1_HOME.tar.md5 to try to revive my phone fresh. It passed in ODIN, and now it boots up like normal except it gets stuck on the last Samsung label of the boot animation with the notification light a solid blue. Any help would be so much appreciated, I know of nothing else to do but I believe this can be fixed.

This one should be easy, if you got a pass in ODIN, the hard part is over.
Go into stock recovery, wipe cache and perform factory reset. Reboot and report back. This generally fixes that bug. Its very common after an ODIN flash.

No problem at all =) Its pretty hard to completely brick your device unless you flash something made for a different phone lol. As long as your phone can see any signs of life (even a faint vibration), let us know and we are more than happy to help!

I once spent four hours trying to hard brick a Galaxy S2 phone (science experiment).
I'd flash ROM's for other phones.
Kernel's.
Recoveries.
Took forever to finally hard brick it.
S.O.S. Phone is completely wiped only dowload mode and recovery work.
Okay so I think I kind of put myself in a sticky situation. I tried to flash a custom rom onto my phone but in the process deleted my modem file everything worked fine except for the fact that I couldnt make calls or text messages. Basically a $400 dollar multimedia device. At this point I just want to put my phone back to the way it was when I got it at the AT&T store. My phone model is SGH-i747 Galaxy S3 that came with JB 4.1.1 pre installed.

I'm currently dealing with a soft brick that I can't unbrick either. Got a replacement Sgh-i747 thru insurance. Rooted and decided to try twrp instead of cwm. Went to flash the ROM and didn't realize twrp didn't read ext SD cards until after i wiped my phone and OS. Tried reverting back to stock but Odin fails on the stock firmware every time. Tried flashing cwm and flashing a ROM but keep getting error 7 and no Roms flash. Any ideas as to where to start over with?

Issue with booting on 4.3

Alright, so I am having this weird issue. I thought I found the fix for it several times, however, NO dice.
I've researched for a few hours now, I just don't know if I have over looked it or what. If it has been answered, I apologize.
I looked at the modified recoveries thread for newer s3 devices, but it doesn't seem to fit my area of error.
The Details:
I've been really curious to try some 4.3 roms. Of course, they are for D2SPR. I get them to flash correctly, after a full wipe. The issue happens right after I set everything up in the phone, and reboot. When I reboot I get hung at the splash screen. I have tried to reflash the rom muliple times only to fall flat on the splash screen again. Now, I don't have an SD Card in the phone, except, I left a TW rom in a folder. I use twrp, forgot to mention that. I rewiped the phone and installed that touchwiz rom, and still it wouldn't allow me to get past splash into that tw rom.
So the only way that I could think of to get out of this hole was to flash the rooted LJ7 tar file I have through ODIN. After getting the S3 into download mode, Odin successfully push LJ7 into my phone. Now again, I had an issue getting it to boot. I read somewhere that when this happens, I need to check the Erase NAND option in Odin. So I tried that out and forced LJ7 back on. After successfully flashing, it boots but gets stuck on the boot animation; the fix to that is booting into stock recovery and wiping once more. Then you are able to get into the OS.
I let the phone sit and take the OTAs till I get from LJ7 to MD4 so I re-root the phone using Odin and Chain Fire's root method. Now I am able to flash the recovery (TWRP) using OpenScript through Goo Manager.
I've only tried flashing Illusion and Carbon's 4.3 rom. The second time I used Carbon's rom. Same results. So I have no Idea what the heck is going on. Can anyone explain this to me better or point me into the direction that I need to go?
Thanks much!
your not the only one that has this problem i have the same thing have tried everything and most of the 4.3 roms same thing. no one on xda seems to know at least i havent gotten any help or responses i have just given u on 4.3. good luck finding any ideas.
Set it up I'm sure you restored some apps and data which may no longer be compatible. Or data which is corrupting the 4.3 rom. Try just flashing the rom setting up your Google account and don't add any apps. See if it does it.
Either way this seems to be a common issue across different devices and 4.3 seems it's part of using roms built on leaks and ports. None are bug free. Very similar to all gb leaks back in the day that would go into bootlooping.
Have a great day!

Well, it's good to know that I'm not the only one, however, it's horrible that it's happening to others. I appreciate you spreading the info!

When I go to set up, I just install about 15 apps, I don't restore. I just download them fresh. I had a habit of doing that and it just stuck. I don't restore anything with Titanium or and root backup/restore app. Could one of those apps not be updated then that causes the partitions to get locked up, or just corrupt /data in general? If that's whats happening.
I just find it extremely odd that I (maybe others), can't wipe, and then re flash another rom; actually I can, it just gets stuck at the splash and never goes forward, that is what had me confused most. If I had an sd card, and formatted data itself, would that fly?
thanks Ed i have tried this after the first 2 tries . i dont have any problems installing 4.3 its just after rebooting it gets stuck. Like you said there are always bugs Im fine with using other roms for now. Hopefully when an official 4.3 drops problems will go away

Issues With Kernels

Hi there!
I have a bit of a problem with my T-Mobile S4 and I was wondering if there was anything I could do to remedy the situation. So here is the problem;
Two days ago, I was playing PPSSPP and then I saved the state so I could eat lunch. When I came back to play, I loaded the state and then all of the sudden, my screen jumbled for a split second then went black. I tried to restart my phone, but it would always boot up and then go back to a black screen. I then reinstalled my ROM and was able to use my phone again. Thinking that it was over, I decided to re-flash my kernel. But then, it happened again, only this time, I could kind of turn my screen on but it was all messed up. See photo below. I re-flashed my ROM once more, made a titanium backup of my apps and then proceeded to wipe my whole phone through TWRP, going to wipe -> advanced wipe and then selecting every check box except for external sd and USB otg. Afterward, I re-flashed my ROM once more, booted my phone to make sure it worked then flashed the kernel same thing happened. SoI tried a couple different kernels but they all produced the same results. Just a jumbled screen. What could have went wrong? And is there a chance I can fix it?
ROM used - ParanoidAndroid 3.99 RC2
Kernel used - KT-SGS4
Other Kernels tried - Chronic Kernel, Blue ROM kernel
Anyone ever have this problem?

I have never heard of this problem. It seems you have tried your best to fix it...
My suggestion is to go back stock and see if the problem is still there. If it is then its a hardware problem.
If its not...re-root and flash a rom and go from there.

This...but use Odin to go back to stock. Dont' just try to flash a stock ROM.
REALLY reset it hardcore by using Odin to flash the stock firmware package in its entirety.
That's what I was thinking about doing, but I can't download the stock image. The download never completes. I've thus far tried to download from the hotfile mirror and from stockROMs but they're always slow and never complete. What I'd really like is a torrent, but if anyone knows of any other mirror or what might be going wrong, I'd appreciate a point in the right direction.
Thanks!

You need to use your pc to DL the firmware....it will fail trying to from your phone.
Sent from my SGH-M919 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Flash the 10.16 AOSP 4.3 build of KT's kernel. Any build newer than that is for CM based ROMs compiled AFTER 10.20.

I am trying to download it from my PC. :/
Also, I tried the earlier KT kernel as that was the one I had on hand. Same thing happens.
