HTC one x & some serious data speed problems - HTC One X

Hi,
I have looked everywhere for a solution with no luck
I just bought a htc one x from Singapore unlocked and unbranded, i live in Australia and i am having really slow data speeds on telstra next g.
Phone calls and txts are great, but speed tests are terrible! My latest results are
DL: 0.28kps UL 0.38kps to my nearest server.
So im just asking if there is any hope to rectify this problem like a different radio or rom, anything really.?
thanks guys

What is your WiFi speed like?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium

Have you checked your APN settings?

my wifi speed is super fast, as fast as my desktop speeds,
i have set my apn settings to the recommended telstra settings an everything works just data is slow.
i spoke to HTC and they said that the IMEI number was suited to India, and that there was no way to fix this. I even mentioned flashing the radio and he said it was hardware specific so software couldn't change it.
Is he lying??

Here is a helpful link for telstra phones. I know your phone isnt 4G but it cant help to have a look at the article.
It says to change your APN to telstra.internet.
Have a look at your to see if it says telstra.datapack
http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2012/05/how-to-get-an-overseas-4g-phone-working-on-telstras-4g-network/

(Most recent result) I'm gettting 9.97Mbps down and 1.01Mbps upload over Telstra Next G in Melbourne. Fastest 3G mobile I've ever seen.
Your area is either very congested or your antenna on the inside of the phone is loose. Try testing around midnight when things are quiet and let us know...

Thanks for your results proves that it is possible to have this hand set working on Telstra with blazing speeds,
I have tested at all hours of the day and its speed are consistently slow. last night at 11pm i tested it and got the exact thing i got at 4pm earlier that day.
My apn settings are exactly what it should be, is my baseband firmware different to you guys or anything? i am on 1.1204.103.14.

i tested my phone at midnight and the fastest i got was 0.79 dl and 0.91 upload.
i have ordered a new one x from mobi city and im returning the one from ebay due to some screen defects as well.

I hope that resolved it for you. I will note that I have been 'Speed Testing' Telstra for a couple of years now, and sometimes I do see results that are as bad as yours. My most recent test on my HOX got me results that bad! But mostly mine are very good. If you are consistently getting results that bad then I would suggest your handset may be faulty.
p.s. Try flashing a custom ROM that allows you to disable 'Fast Dormancy'. LeeDroid and Team Pkmn are two that come to mind.
p.p.s. I also found that using any AOSP ROM's such as Trip's CM9, that data speeds were terrible, consistently. The only ones I can get good speed with are HTC (custom and stock) ROM's. In fact I think better to be custom with regards to my point above about Fast Dormancy.

thanks for advise guys.
In the end i sent back the phone and ordered a replacement which works great! no defects yay. network speed is around 5-8mbdl and 500kps-3mb ul.
so it was just a dud phone that was holding me back.
now its time to flash some roms!

im having data speed problems on att. im getting like .3 down and like 1 up. i got the apn settings off android police. im running cleanrom 3.1 standard. yes i have the one x i just havnt changed my signature

Most AT&T data speed issues are from the plan provisioned in your account not being mapped correctly to the SIM and/or APN's you're using. If you're on a MEdia Net or data for Non-Smartphones plan you need to use the Cingular APN. If you're on a 4G plan you need to use the "Phone" APN. You can do a search on XDA to find the respective settings. Some people in the SGS3 forum that were on the prepaid $50 unlimited plan had their data shut off a couple of days ago. If you're on that plan look up the thread on the international SGS3 forum. It's not the phone because I'm on the data for Non-Smartphones plan and am getting better data speeds than I did with my i9100. I didn't have to touch the settings. I popped the SIM in, the phone read the settings, and I was good to go.

Slow 3G?

I'm going f'n mad. How can my 3G be so slow with over half my bars lit up...
Accessing websites is slow, downloading is slow. I don't get it. I can barely break 30 KB/s. I'm ready to throw this POS in the trash, it's a waste of money paying for data and premium data at that when it's slower than snot.
Anyone experiencing the same? In OKC.
Yep, phone is a POS.....
Have you tried updating your PRL / PRI?
How about you give some details?
PRI?
PRL?
Hboot?
ROM?
Kernel?
Signal strength (in -dB)?
Do you get the same results on another ROM?
Do you get the same results in another area?
How much data have you used this billing period?
Same issue with me. Called Sprint tonight andsaid I was going to leave for t-mobile. Said I would sell evo for 300 on ebay to pay for cancellation. They covered next months bill (150) and an airave. I am now using the roaming hack (prl 31005) and if they kick me off then I will go to T-Mobile.

I used the first method presented, and now I am having this exact same problem! Never did before.
???????
r u runnin any ad free software or is it cooked in your rom, if it is download the ad free app from the market and just click revert, ( then uninstall if you like I did) then reboot, this puts your host file back to normal and internet will be fast again (if this is the prob)

Call them. It's the network. I'm days into it with an executive. Basically been field testing and reporting areas that suck. Contact sprint otherwise they'd never know
I haven't experienced any problems here. Love my rooted Evo!
At my home I get pathetic 3g speeds, maybe 100 kbps or so, but for whatever reason the 4g is stronger than anywhere else in the country I've been. Consistenly 8-9 Mbps. Is that common, an almost non-existent 3g connection but an awesome 4g connection? Needless to say I'm on 4g all the time at home.
I need help!! I have flashed myns Fls5 and the 4g connects but doesn't load web pages . It gets stuck all the time . I've downloaded adfree and have the updated radios. 3g works great . I've tried to search for this but no help so far thanks

Might be a long shot but do the 3G connection fix.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10781368#post10781368
Also I had this issue in NYC where it slowed to a crawl on 3G to the point where it wouldn't even load google.com
I flashed another ROM and everything was good but one thing I did notice was when I did a speed test using Speedtest it said the closest server was in the UK for all the tests I ran that day. I was pretty baffled by that.
So unless Sprint is routing all of their connections to the UK, they are just lagging. Try another ROM and if its the same deal and you have everything updated, call and flip out.
Do the 3g connection fix a couple posts up/back.
Check what rom you have. If you have a rom with adfree in it, then install it and uninstall the application from the market. Then reboot.
I'm actually getting better speeds now that I moved to a different rom. Weird, eh?
Myn's was giving me trouble with that because of adfree.

I've been having this problem for months now, while my friends evo doesnt have this problem, and none of the evos at the sprint store do. But mine does, along with many people here. Ive had the phone replaced 6 times, so obviously its not a hardware problem.
I have spent MANY MANY hours on the phone with sprint, and the executives have basically told me, unless 100 people or more have the same problem in the area, they wont send anyone out to check the network. Since apparantly I'm the only one in my area with this problem, they refuse to send anyone out.

Yes, everything. I have done everything the techs on the phone and in the store can do. I have gotten 3 refurb evo's and 3 new ones, all have the same problem. When I roam on verizon (using the verizon prl) even with 1 bar of verizon service I get 10 times as fast as I do with 6 bars on sprint.

[Q] AT&T and Radios on CM 7

First off, a real big thanks/"you the man!" etc. to Cyanogen for CM 7. Finally took the plunge and rooted my phone, warranty be damned. Let's just say I had an older Aria (which had already been rooted) as my training wheels, and it certainly was nice, but nowhere near as nice as the DZ/Vision.
So let me get my specs out of the way:
Baseband Version: 12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2 (I gather the bold part is what we refer to as the radio version).
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.28-cyanogenmod-g4free2e [email protected] #1
Using CM 7.0.3
Now in running Speed Test, I'm getting about, ranging from .45 Mbps, going as high as 1.60 Mbps in terms of download with upload being only slightly behind, sometimes being even. Now the results don't make sense, and I know I've gotten significantly higher in my area, and browsing does seem slower many times latesly.
So should I change my radio (again)? I had changed it (probably shouldn't have) thinking I could get more consistent mobile Internet connections, but I guess I've kind of screwed up. Any suggestions from fellow AT&T users?
I'm in the same boat, about to get my Desire Z. Not a ton of AT&T users for the Vision so I wasn't sure whether a different radio would benefit or not...
I've gotten up to 5 Mbps down on the stock radio. But obviously, this is going to be dependent on your local network (whether or not the HSPA+ backhaul has been performed, and network congestion). It would be ideal if you could compare data transfer rates with another AT&T customer in your immediate area, preferably on an Android device.
Only time I've switched radios, was when I tried Virtuous, and used the radio that is recommended for that ROM. Did not notice any change in data speed.
I assume you have the Canada Bell version of the Vision. In that case, you never had a warranty. HTC states in their terms that any phone purchased outside of the country it is intended to be sold in, is not warrantied.
I am on 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.18_M3 CM7
I get 1~1.5 MB/s Down and <1 MB/s during peak hours. At 3am in the morning i get 3-4mb/s Down and 1.35 mb/s up. This is from an Suburban area too...
Once I get into the SF City CBD area during 8am hours i get 300kb down lol. And all my data no longer work.
Also I have an iphone 4. It makes no difference when i switch the sims. Same data speed.
I used to use RUU_Vision_Hutch_AUS_1.85.861.3 when i had issues with 3g dropping to edge all the time.

Really? No warranty, eh? Well I'm going to have to look at those terms again. Not like it matters now anyhow.
Sadly, most of the AT&T users I know are iPhone users; however, there are a few I know I could ask.
Yes I have the Canada Bell version of the Vision; however, I don't remember the stock version of the radio, so I'll have to do some digging unless the stock radio is what's in your sig. If that's not the stock radio, well, I can always try it.
Anybody else (particularly in New England/Northeast USA)?
Thanks again!
I should have an unlocked Bell Desire Z in my hands in the next few days. I'll do some testing and see what results I get.

Thanks! Keep us posted, cause I'm sure there are several of us here on AT&T. I plan on testing next week.
Kk, so finally got the phone unlocked/working. I ran a few tests from a few different places and got the best result to be 2.4Mbps down and 1.1Mbps up. I'm not really sure if those are hspa+ speeds or not and don't have my friend's atrix here to compare at the moment. I'm also no sure but he was telling me that if I want hspa+ speeds at&t needs to activate something for me. Can anyone confirm? Or at least tell me a way to be sure of what I'm currently on?

Stock radio is: 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.18_M3
Where in New England? I'm in the Boston area. Data speeds vary greatly depending on exact location. I get good speeds at work (Burlington, MA), often 3-5 Mbps down (but sometimes dipping to 1-2 Mbps). While at my house in Waltham, its abyssmal, with speeds often around 0.5 Mbps down, or even less. Luckily, I'm always on WiFi at home.

I think it always says 'H'. Just tested at 4.11 Mbps down, and it says 'H'.
I'm in California, in the greater Sacramento area. I have a Desire Z NAM that I've been using on ATT since about last November.
I don't believe the backhaul overhauls have been done in our area yet as I haven't seen an increase in data speeds lately.
During the day, I average downloads of 1.5-2.5mbps and uploads of 1-1.5mbps. Of course during off peak hours, those numbers go up a little bit but not drastic. When heading into the bay area, specifically into San Francisco they tank hard, to the point where I'm better off switching to EDGE...
I am still running CM 6.1 with radio 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
My GF has a Dell Streak on ATT and she gets comparable speeds to my DZ. Haven't tested it for exact numbers but I don't feel a significant difference when using her browser against mine.
Haven't done any tinkering with Radios either, perhaps a project for summer when I get some vacation time...

Haven't had much time to test as the company move has me working massive amounts of overtime (hey, at least the paycheck is huge).
I live in Connecticut; right outside the Greater Hartford area. I plan on moving back to the stock radio to see if anything gets better, so we'll see.
Granted I plan on being in NYC this weekend, so testing may not happen seeing as how AT&T's service is like rhino poop in the area.
(Yes, rhino poop).
I'm on stock radio and I have zero service in my basement. Service was never that great down here, but I always got one to two bars. Can anyone point me to radios to work specifically for AT&T Desire Z users or does it make a difference if we use those other ones (like T-mobile)? I've seen the thread with all the radios, but I am clueless as to which ones I should try.

a lot of us are from the US here so we won't be able to do much to help you since your an orange subscriber. if you notice, most of us have usa companies in our sidebar.
as far as your issue. i don't think it's something with the phone. your best bet is to go into the orange store where you bought the device and talk to them about the issue and see whats going on.
i'm on T-Mobile USA, and i've had no issues with the speedtest app and have been getting on average 5Mbps down on 3G.
I have the same issue with my Galaxy Nexus. It is bought from Spain. I have tried all GSM radios, several ROMs, including the stock ones, nothing. The same SIM, in a Galaxy S II, on SpeedTest.net app (same server) gets 5 mbps, on my Nexus it never goes past 300kbps and it extremely jittery.
I suspect the phone is defective. What are your thoughts?
Your best bet is to call up your service provider and have them run through the settings of your access point names with you to make sure the settings are right.
If it's a hardware problem, you will most likely not be able to connect to 3G at all.

That gave me an idea and I found the problem. On each reboot Orange forces down my throat the settings and it defaults to WAP. THAT is why nothing works on mobile data; if I delete all APNs and manually create just the one for data it is fine.

I have been on the phone with TMO about the same thing for over a month, plus my issue goes a little further. I will lose connection to a tower and not get texts or calls until I reboot the phone.
TMO had me replace the phone and SIM card, then opened a ticket with the Engineers in Las Vegas to troubleshoot, their response was that it was a known issue and would be resolved in the next weeks or months.
Everything ran fine until they pushed out the 4G LTE update, after that the service has been horrible.... even after that update that was supposed to resolve it...
I am wondering if there is a ROM out there that someone built to address this issue as I have about had it...
I am rooted but haven't thrown a ROM on it .... yet

Im guessing you updated your phones softwarem if so, you may want to downgrade to a 4g non-lte radio, and set yourself up on a 4g apn as well. It should help at least until rhey correct their tower issues. 4g is still pretty fast and at least your mms / signal will work as you will be back in the 4g towers instead.
Edit
Actually try this:
Settings--> wireless and networks / more settings --> mobile networks --> network mode --> and select the automatic 4G /3g /2g setting
Then go to access point names and add a new one. The only 4 lines you need to edit are as follows :
Name - Tmobile 4g
APN - epc.tmobile.com
MMSC - http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc
And
Apn type - default, supl, admin, dun, mms ( no spaces inbetween the comas )
Give it a shot and let us know if it helps. It should force you back onto the 4g towers which use a different frequency. If you still have issues, then keep all these settings active THEN try an older 4G radio.

I still go back to the T889UVBMD1 modem once and a while with the latest 4g lte apn but 75% of the day it is just way to slow of a combo. It's screwed from coast to coast. Been back and forth driving from california to pennsylvania, and the network is spotty on LTE within LTE markets, otherwise it runs great until it hiccups.
Seems like you get the equivalent of 'buffer overrun' issues from cd burning. Gert a bunch of data quickly, then stops for a minute to sort it out, then another data burst.
Seems like it happens to deliver a handful of megs of data, then practically loses network service for a few seconds, then another couple megs of data.
Just what i've seen running around nationwide.
LTE is fast when you find it though, nowhere near the speed of my verizon LTE service, but I can live with it.
Hopefully once they finish the LTE rollout it'll be back to normal.

[Q] Data service iffy on LTE - phone or Straight Talk issue

Hi,
I've been having data issues with my HTC ONE M8 on Straight Talk for the past couple of weeks. the data service for some reasons got really iffy. before everything was absolutely fine. now sometimes I cannot access data at all, sometimes something is working and something doesn't.
when the data doesn't work:
- most of websites are not reachable
- google.com seems to work normally
- google maps might work; sometimes very slow, sometimes not working at all
- ookla speedtest won't start, but if I set a fixed server it might work
- facebook.com might work in the browser but the app doesn't work
- refreshing the page seems to help
on WI-FI I have absolutely no problem. everything works fine.
phone and txt messages work without problems.
on 3G (HSDPA) everything seems to work fine. I see problems when on LTE.
anybody has the similar issues?? any suggestions?
many thank!!
I am having the exact same issue! So frustrating, I don't want to use 3g if we should be on "Full speed 4G LTE for up to 3GB"!
tried so many different APN's, no luck can't get over 2.5mbps with any of them
I would be happy with anything that works right now. the service is just NOT WORKING. I am paying for a service that doesn't work and that's not acceptable.
I opened a case with the help desk; useless. I was talking to people who don't understand the basic concepts of networking. made me add a proxy to the APN; no difference at all.
then I put a complain on Twitter and got some other people "helping" via email. at least they asked for the address of where I am always having problems; hopefully, they check out the service at the antenna. I think it's not a BTS (antenna) issue but something related to their proxy, firewall or network gateway since google.com works without problems!
I talked to a friend of mine who has StraightTalk as well and he said that he had the same issue last year!
I had the exact same issue with Net10 it is so annoying and unacceptable =(
Have you tried calling straight talk a call
U can try this from what I know ur phone gets chooses the strongest signal tower example u are around 3G tower it has a 9/10 signal and the 4g tower is a 6/10 strength it goes with the 3g hope this helps in ur dial pad dial *#*#4636#*#* then Phone Information....Scroll down a little bit to Set preferred network type. I was able to lock in LTE only doing this and gave me the fastest signal on my device hope with works for u. If u can post ur original settings before u change to lte option only on this post so u can always revert to ur original setting good luck.

if I lock it to 3G it actually works well. I will try your suggested settings.
on another note I wonder if it's an issue with the phone radio implementation. my Nokia/Windows phone sees LTE very very slow but it doesn't stop working completely.

Hmmm Idk but anything's worth a try what settings do u have it on already?
if I put it on GSM/WCDMA (so no LTE) data works fine in 3G.
and if I do a speed test in 3G it gets about 5Mbps in download vs 1, 2 or 3 Mbps when LTE works (ZERO otherwise)
The exact same thing started happening to me two or three weeks ago. More often than not, the LTE connection simply doesn't work, and when it does, it's excruciatingly slow (anywhere from 0.01 to 2.50 mpbs, and usually less than 1.00). Do you guys have AT&T or T-Mo sims? I'm starting to wonder if going to Cricket would solve the problem, but since I'm running an AT&T sim, I'm not sure if anything would change since it's on the same network.
Straight Talk support is worthless... they think a factory data reset will fix it, when it's clearly a network issue. I just told them to stop right there and started troubleshooting myself. That's a good tip about dialing *#*#4636#*#* and turning off LTE that way. It seems like that is where the issue lies - I'm having good luck with HSPA; it's slower than LTE should be, but at least it works. It'll do as a stopgap through the end of my billing cycle, at which point I can decide whether to go somewhere else or get by on HSPA until they fix whatever the problem is.

tried and on pure LTE it simply doesn't work. the only way is to set GSM/WCDMA and it goes at 3G speeds but at least it works.
the funny part is that Google.com always works, whatsapp works, googleplay works. so it seems a problem with throttling or filtering to me.

yes. completely incompetent. asked for a supervisor; no way to speak to one.
I posted on Twitter and ST got back to me asking to send them an email. I did. 10 different people sending me emails with conflicting actions.
insanely frustrating.

I have ST on AT&T.
a friend of mine with iPhone 6 down in Newport has no problems. he sent me screenshots of speed test at 15Mbps.
I really wonder if it's some radio firmware issue...
Ironically, I ran into something very like this too recently....I was on an at&t straighttalk sim...lte had been OK prior to me updating to 4.4.4. It was never spectacular, but it was, at least, lte speeds. After the update I noticed it had become really sketchy...just as described, pretty much; even when mine worked it was trash. 3g was much better and totally stable. I thought it might be the update, but long story short, it wasn't. I inserted a friend's sim from tmobile and got full lte with no issues.
Now, in my case, I had been using a shaved down microsim rather than a nano sim, so I thought, maybe that's the issue. I noticed when ordering the new one, the tmobile one actually said htc m8 compatible on the page(plus my friend's legit tmobile sim got good signal and lte so I thought that's a good basis for comparison). Got the new one, put my number on it, and voila! I'm getting on average 20mbps lte. And it's very consistent too. So now I'm on the tmobile straighttalk sim and everything is fine.
Anyways, it's only $7 with free overnight shipping, so that's something easy to try. This wouldn't be the first time a new sim fixed all sorts of weird data problems with straighttalk either. I've been on with them for several years now and this is probably my 4-5th sim I've had to get for various reasons.
So, anyways, your mileage may vary but that fixed it for me. Hope it helps.

it seems ST on T-mobile is not having the same issues as ST on AT&T. the problem is that T-mobile coverage is not so good in my area.
I tried my phone in a different location (400 miles away) and had the same issues.
I've done some more testing.
it is really weird that Google.com works flawless while any other site seems not to work.
activating "save data usage" in Chrome seems to help. however it doesn't solve the problem. sometimes pages needs to be reloaded a few times.
even when LTE works, the OOKLA speed test gives me 2Mbps in dowload and 5-6Mbps in upload. so no matter what, I am better off with 3G.
I found an interesting thread here on XDA. I am not rooted at the moment and can't try.
<<
If you are rooted there is simple FIX, simple disable FD8 (Fast dormacy 8)
ro.ril.enable.r8fd=1
ro.ril.enable.pre_r8fd=1
Change both to =0 and issue will be fixed.
If your not rooted only fix is to keep HotSpot enabled than data connection wont break.

I tried the hotspot trick but it doesn't work for me
Sorry to bump an old thread, but I just wanted to give a brief update. My LTE issues with Straight Talk went unresolved for about 6 weeks despite multiple conversations with customer service. I experienced this in Raleigh, NC, Greensboro, NC, and Virginia Beach, VA. Then for Thanksgiving, I went to New York City and New Jersey (the part just outside of Philly), where all data connections were unreliable. Yes, that means 2G, 3G, HSPA, and LTE were all spotty at best the entire time.
I ran out of patience after that, and since my billing cycle was ending on 12/4, I switched to Cricket when I got home. As soon as I popped in the Cricket sim card, everything started working flawlessly again. Cricket does limit you to 8 mbps down, but that's good enough for my purposes. The issue, if it's still going on, is with Straight Talk and not the phone.
Lollipop Fixed the Issue on my HTC M8
Hey all,
I've been following this thread as I too had issues with LTE on my HTC M8 using StraightTalk. When I first got my phone, it worked perfectly with LTE on ST. Then I ran the OS update that was released sometime near November. That's when I noticed the problems. I could run a search on Google but any webpage I would try to connect to would not load. The phone would hang and eventually time out. Your instructions to turn off LTE was great help. Pages load perfectly provided LTE is not used. I was getting really frustrated and you kept me from throwing my phone at a wall. Thanks for that.
So that brings me to this post. I updated my phone to Lollipop this morning. Thought I'd give turning LTE back on and bam.... works perfectly. I've been testing it all morning and so far, all pages load really fast. I will keep an eye on it for a while and post any updates but thought I pay it back a bit with the good news since you guys helped me.
Thanks again.
AC
thank you for sharing!!
trying to upgrade to Lollipop. unfortunately I am having an issue with the recovery (flashed from TWRP to a stock that doesn't work with the OTA and can't flash any other recovery -not sure what's wrong).
when I solve this issue and able to upgrade to Lollipop I will share my LTE test results
