Should I root? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I just got my nexus this past week and I'm wondering if I should root. I'm coming from an Optimus V where it was a necessity to root. Are there any roms and kernels that can help save battery life?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Of course . I can't live without root. But its really preference.

The better question is why should you not root?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Don't bother rooting.
use the nexus toolbox to unlock and flash a custom recovery, then create a backup in recovery.
Flash aokp b37 and franco nightly 166 kernel, and you'll be amazed at how much smoother, how much better the battery life is, and how much more customizable your phone is.

I wouldn't suggest this. I would read up on how to do things manually and don't rely in toolkits.

Anything that is based on 4.0.4, even stock. I don't find custom kernels to make a big difference in saving battery (my opinion).. as concerning whether u should root or not, it depends on what u want to do with ur phone and whether u're satisfied or not with stock. Users' needs and expectations differ, so don't let anyone make that decision for u.

Sorry, but i must call BS on this one, there's no way u could've got a realistic estimate of ur battery in those 2days.

Here is my opinion: Why would anyone buy an Android phone if you don't root it? I hate Apple as a company but even I admit that the iPhone is a great piece of technology that inspired all the Android phones. If you don't want to root your device, just return it and get an iPhone.
If you want bloatware gone (yes GN has it too), more customization, better battery life, and snappier phone, go ahead and root and customize. I did it manually, YMMV. I use AOKP and Franco's kernel.

I just ran into a problem when rooting. I unlocked the bootloader and flashed clockworkmod and then pulled the battery to reboot but it didn't wipe the phone so I'm not sure what to do
PS: Sorry for not putting this in the Q&A section but I just realized.

mate, u have to run a few full cycles of the battery to make an objective analysis, u couldn't have done that in the first 2 days u got the phone

I see no reason not to root. Yes it comes down to personal preference but clearly the OP has experience rooting so it shouldn't be that difficult, especially given that this phone was made to be rooted.
Personally, I'm rooted but barely use it for much. Mostly for free tethering and Root Explorer. I just like knowing I can do whatever I want, when I want and I can't possibly screw up my device...for the most part.

I had root with my infuse, but also use my handset to collect work mail.. They just pushed a policy through the GOOD application that fails compliance if the phone is rooted.
Does anyone have _experience_ with removing root temporarily?

No. That app will do EXACTLY what he is looking for. Don't let the name fool you. It is not just an app to let you keep root during an OTA update -- it allows you to temporarily "unroot" your build.

My opinion and my opinion only:
I rooted my phone the second zedo posted his first kernel. Overall it was running good. At first I thought the issues people were having with loss of signal and data lock were due to the root but have since seen unrooted phones have the same issue. I however never got the LOS or data lockup.
Yesterday I returned my phone for a new one and have not rooted it. I still havent had LOS or data lockup but what I do notice is SIGNIFICANT battery improvement over being rooted.
Rooted battery at best was draining 6% an hour. More often was average of 1o% hour. Battery after battery calibration lasted 14 hours
Unrooted battery as of this minute is draining 2% an hour. This battery should be on par to last over 2 days but realistically will be over a day Im sure.
So my personally opinion is dont root till a) theres a way out and b) it doesnt require a kernel push. Something just doesnt seem right having to replace a kernel to achieve root. Never had to do that before and dont plan on doing it again.
Also, get a usb jig before rooting to avoid the triangle splash screen and counter.

Ok I am using Zedomax's V2, which is the overclockable Kernel with root and CWM. After flashing I did the Data reset which involves the ##...# code listed in the forums. My phone is rooted, overclocked, and running flawless. Most of the issues, other than the data loss(fixed with the data reset), are due to people doing things they shouldnt do... Like doing a factory reset in CWM without having a rom to flash afterward. This is what is causing the bootloops. If you follow the directions and dont get too ambitious you will be fine. That being said... if you are concerned then just wait until we get the stock tar so that if you do mess up while flashing anything you can flash right back to stock. Personally I believe most of the issues are user error.

I would wait until there is a way to go back to stock. Then u could try. In reality though we should be flashing a custom recovery and not a Complete kernel. Then for root u flash the su.zip. then you can flash a custom rom/kernel or stay stock with root.

Exactly the way it should be done. I learned my lesson about rushing to get this thing unlocked. Sometimes being first doesnt mean being right

Should I root?

I have had a epic and a nexus s 4g and I rooted both of them and loved it. I rooted for the main reason to help with making the phone faster due to them just having a single core. Using the galaxy nexus it seems to be very fast stock. Will I see a big difference rooting this phone and over clocking it and running roms or is just as smooth as it being stock. I do not use wifi tether and themes really don't matter to me. All I care about is speed and stability. If rooting makes this beast even faster please let me know and recommended what you feel would be the best set up for me to use.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I've always rooted my devices and ran custom firmware (Xperia x10, Captivate, Xperia Arc, Desire Z, Desire S, Xperia Ray, Nexus S)
But with the Galaxy Nexus...ah I am just not feeling it. I am going to wait I think until it gets old enough that google is not giving it the latest version of Android...and by that time I might not even have it because I plan on just paying the early upgrade fee and getting the latest Nexus always, then selling my current device to cover the cost anyways so...I don't know. But I am personally happy with it as is for the time being.
You've rooted before so you know what it's like. I like having complete control and the ability to have access to system apps as well as flash custom kernels and ROM's. So if you want speed and stability then yes root because ROM kernel combos will give you that. But I'm sure you're aware of this already. My phone is much faster with better battery life than stock. AOKP ms3 and faux123's newest kernel has given me what I look for. AOKP's customizations make the phone my own which is what I want besides the speed and stability.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
I didn't root for a while but now am happy I did, I dont really notice speed increases but the customability is much better, I have a menu button always visible better lock screen with access to SMS, Widget for wireless AP and silent in my Notification bar. There is definitely benefits!
I never even had a smartphone till I got the nexus. I was so nervous about rooting it. Thought for sure I would brick it. But I realized what is the point of having a developers phone and not seeing what developers can do with it? Might as well have gotten a razr or something that would have ics in a short time. I read, and read some more, found a toolkit that also had a video and rooted my nexus. Best decision I ever made. The development for this phone is insane. I still get nervous when I flash any new rom, theme, animation mod, softkey, or whatever, but that keeps me on my toes so I don't make any mistakes. Stock was nice, but why not have stock on steroids? Battery life improvement is reason alone to root. So I guess I wood say read, learn and root.

Many people suffered unexplainable signal drops while in deep sleep and other general sudden radio drops. It can't be because of the new radio that followed, since I have that and run CM9 and no signal-drops whatsoever.
So, Google decided to hold on to the second "batch" of OTA releases since the first batch caused problems. They will fix the error an re-release the OTA later. At least what I've heard, doesn't mean what I say is true.

im trying to root my optimus v but i just made an account and can't post in the thread i want because i need 10 posts.
for me stability of my phone is very important and custom rom doesn't really give me that feeling just yet, there is always something issues going on...
back in the days the reason why i went w/ cm7 vs stock rom is because it was cleaner, now that I have ICS its pretty clean as it comes, developer puts in his own tweaks what he feels is important (may not be important to me) and with that comes some unstable/untested code which i'm not ready to do beta testing
so i'm fine w/ stock rom and i'm loving it, of course someone may not think this way and want to go w/ cm9 nightly or some other custom rom its up to this person (who am I to tell otherwise)
i just wanted to know if maybe i missed something and it can be done with stock rom, but apparently thats not the case (or at least doesn't seems so)
I think you might want to try out one of the custom roms first. I thought that too. But these roms seem to be a whole different level of professionally coded compared to the cm7 days. Aokp to start with, then expand if necessary to paradigm etc. I think you'll be surprised, you're getting stock stability with extras.

Same here. My last phone (LG P500), which has now gone to my wife, is rooted and I like to stay tuned to developments for it as well. I expect that I'll root once I get 4.1 for my T989D (assuming it comes), then see what custom ROMs can offer beyond that. I've been reading these forums for over a month now to learn the procedures and of potential pitfalls so I don't wreck my phone when the time comes.
This phone is quite a step up from the P500, so I'm pretty happy without root for the time being.

I'm guessing by this statement, that you are a young teenager. I am an Android user and have been for quite a while. I honestly prefer to live my life and not have to tweak a phone's core OS for it to work right. It should work correctly right out of the box. Having to reset my phone several times a day or deal with bloatware is not fun. The nature of Android OS to begin with requires de-bloat/hacking.
Anyway like I said this is coming from a SGS2 user and former iPhone user as well. Only reason I don't go back is iPhones are still physically small for my liking. That and I'm on contract with T-Mobile and live in a building with poor reception (need WiFi calling)
Bought the phone ... rooted it in less than an hour xD. But, after browsing through some roms, I am in stock now just because everything works. However, I do run some rooted apps that come in handy at times.
Battery
I wanted something close to stock, so I went infamous 3.0 and it's just as stable, but the battery life is so much better than stock ICS. Would never go back.
