WiFi issues - Nokia Lumia 900

I have the latest Nokia software. I can connect to WiFi sources however I loose data connection but the signal shows strong.
Could this be a hardware problem?
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express

when your phone is not charging, and the cellular is not turned off the phone will lose the wifi connection. This is a windows phone problem, not nokias problem. ONce the phone goes to standby it will loose connection, only if your phone is charging and the data is turned off is that the wifi will stay active.

Well this happening while browsing or playing games. The signal never drops, however turning WiFi off then back on resolves this issue.
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express

Just for clarification, having Data on/off has nothing to do with Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi will remain on when plugged in to a power source, or while streaming/downloading something. Otherwise I will turn off about 30 seconds after the screen he's to sleep. Same whether Data is on or off.
Why the OP is losing the Wi-Fi connection is a mystery though. Are you connected as a guest where the connection times out after a period of time.
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express Pro

Not sure what you mean connected as a guest. Just seems I loose connection and get an error in the apps saying they have disconnected and or no data connection. This just happened on a free ATT hotspot at a McDonald's.
I am thinking I will need to exchange this phone. Just sucks to have to do that. If it is software I guess I could wait for an update bit no one else seems to have this issue.
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express

So is the problem occurring on all Wi-Fi connections, or only public connections like McDonald's? They may have a timeout. For home, Linksys routers have a guest connection that will time out after a period of time and require you to reenter the security key to get back on the network.
Seems unusual that you may be the only one with this issue.
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express Pro

This is only happening on WiFi at multiple spots. The signal always shows strong however it just wont pull data until I restart the wifi. The games or IE will just come up and say there is now data connection.
I was hoping this might be a software bug but I am thinking it is a hardware issue. I have 20 days with ATT to do an exchange at store level so when I get back to Chicago I will do that. If by chance we get a software update before that time I will do that to see if there is a fix for this issue.
It does seem I am the only one with this issue. I was at a friends house that had wifi and he has the same phone. I couldn't stay connected while he was.

I had the issues with my lumia too. But after doing a reset it never appeared again.
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express

Correct. This sounds like it could be the tethering bug. It you try to initiate tethering on your phone, with or without an AT&T tethering plan, it changes a setting on your phone that will cause WiFi to disconnect. Only a hard reset will correct it.
I have been tempted, but have so far not clicked the tethering option.

I'm not positive this is true. Before I had tethering enabled, I did turn it on, to see what it did....remember when the lumia came out everyone thought tethering was included. It did not impact my WIFI, or anything else. Though I do reset my phone often, I did not have to after activating tethering.

You're not alone. I have had the same issues. There's also a thread here.

It was so bad that I got fed up and went to a local AT&T store where they saw it first hand. I went through the grueling process of about 3 hours of my time to get a replacement.
I have yet to turn the new replacement phone on that I received from AT&T. The main reason is because the backup/restore doesn't work across different phones--only the same phone that the backup came from.
I'd say this phone has a very nasty wifi bug somewhere.

I have not tried opening Internet Sharing on my L900, but have read enough posts from users who have and subsequently had the WiFi issue described above. So is it true, not sure. But a hard reset might save the trouble of exchanging the phone.
Do you really "hard reset" (full wipe) your phone often?

Only time I have turned off WiFi on my L900 is to test LTE speeds with the Bandwidth app. Otherwise it has been on and working flawlessly since pre-launch day. So if it is a bug, I have yet to see it.

I did exchange the phone today and does seem to be working better.
I do have the 5 GB tethering plan. I will use it time to time.

Some phones are actually different firmware-wise. Launch phones had a different color dot inside the sim tray. The replacement I have has another color and different firmware version (but same OS version). So, all phones were not the same launch and post-launch. I was even asked what color the dot was by the AT&T tech before replacement.
If you weren't having the same problem, you likely had a different set of circumstances to work on.

I am having this problem exactly as described in the other thread. These are the only two places I can find online about this issue. Everywhere else is complaints about wifi going off when the phone sleeps. I will be in the middle of browsing and I think a web page is taking extra long to load while i'm staring at the white screen like an idiot. I'm glad you were able to duplicate the issue at the store.

Q: No Data if Not Activated?

Hello. I am wondering if someone here might be able to clear something up for me. I bought a new EVO 4G off eBay a few days ago. I called Sprint to verify the ESN is clean.
The thing is, I don't have any intention to activate this phone, rather I bought it as a toy, and because upon coming back to the US for a vacation a few weeks ago, I finally saw what it looks like in person and I had to have it (Yes, I like smartphones). Of course ironically it FINALLY released in Japan just days after I left but that's besides the point.
Anyway, I have the WiFi turned on and the phone has found my location for the HTC Sense weather widget, however the internet won't load and when I try to connect to Google to use the Marketplace and such, it says there is an error communicating with the servers, and that my phone might not be set up for data provision.
Someone please tell me that Sprint hasn't locked down this such that you can't even use the Wi-Fi until it's activated. Though I suspect that is indeed the case...
...and IF that is so, then am I correct in the understanding that flashing it with some custom ROM would solve the problem? I have never rooted a phone before, though I do own a number of unlocked ones (Nexus S, Xperia Play, etc) and so I had intended to try it out with this, since I can never actually use this as a phone. But perhaps it might be more of a necessity than I had expected.
Not sure if this will help you, but if you flash Warm Z, or any other of the froyo/sense 2.2 ROMs, during setup it will ask you if you want to use it on the data network or only on wifi.
Since you don't need 4g anyway, I would recommend checking it out. One of my favorite ROMs.

I can't say this with confidence, because my Evo hasn't been deactivated before, but as far as I understood it, you should be able to connec to WiFi, whether the phone is activated or not. You shouldn't need to be activated to use WiFi. When you connected to the WiFi network, did it connect successfully and show good signal strength?
How about formatting the phone and then turning on airplane mode and then wifi. It should work fine
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
Yes, being a used phone, I would highly recommend do a factory reset on it first. That way it will be clear of anything the previous owner might have done to it.
And yes, the phone will work on wifi only without a data plan, just make sure the phone is in airplane mode all the time, then turn the wifi on.
I had that happen to me with a old android when I did a factory rest you should have wifi but you can't use the market or gmail without a data plan from sprint at least I could not but I had a Samsung moment and it was rooted with a costume ROM on it I've never had my evo turned of so IDK..... If thats the case you can use other ways to get apps like Amazon or applanet thats what I did anyway......

Thanks to everyone who provided assistance. A few things:
1. The phone was actually still sealed. The security stickers were still on the phone and the manual, and even the battery was still unopened. Furthermore the phone itself still had the plastic sheet over the screen in perfect condition (something I've not even got from so-called new unlocked phones) so unless the seller went through really great loops to make it look new, it is apparently new. Though I will format the memory just incase.
2. I turned on Airplane mode as everyone suggested, and then when I turned on WiFi it let me connect to the Android Marketplace actually.
Actually, can I ask one more question, though unrelated. I want someone to confirm this:
I have two different contract carriers with me here roaming (Docomo and Softbank), both on Android Phones (the Xperia Play unlocked and Desire HD locked respectively). I have the mobile data transmission set to off (no roaming), however the actual phone service is on roaming. Every time I turn on the phones I receive messages from the carriers about roaming charges for data. I want to confirm that if the data roaming is OFF, and it is on Wi-Fi always, there are no charges for anything other than if I were to make a phone call, is this correct? I am 99.999% sure this is true, but part of me is really worried about returning and seeing a $10,000 bill.
but you can't use the market or gmail without a data plan from sprint

Yes you absolutely can. To the phone, a wifi connection is the same as a 3g connection, its just a way to access the internet.

You could still get charged for any texts/picture mail you receive, as those still go through the regular phone radio, not the data radio.

Drat...I've received a number of those actually, but all from the carriers themselves which I think might be free of charge.
Japan basically doesn't do SMS/MMS thus it's really not an issue. And while Softbank does to an extent, I can't seem to actually receive any while here, as it actually keeps saying I have undelivered mail.
But I am happy everyone here mentioned the Airplane Mode detail as I had no idea you could use Wi-Fi in it. I had been angry because there seemed like no way to shut off the cellular radio and that provided a solution.
Sorry if I seem paranoid, but I literally received a bill for $5400 last December due to a carrier mistake (and they actually had the nerve to accuse me of using an overseas phone when I CLEARLY was using a locked one) and ever since I have been scared about getting another. Currently Docomo is the only carrier in Japan that will allow unlocked phones to be used, though in doing so you are thus accepting that your data transmission charge will be capped at $120 a month instead of the normal $75 for its sanctioned (locked) products. But Japan is so far behind with smartphones I can't stand to use any of them.

Still having data problems. No 3g/4g!!

This is really becoming frustrating. I switched to Verizon a week ago and had 3g/4g service for a couple days and now NOTHING. I called support (12/23/11) and after an hour on the phone, visited the store. Then after 2 hours at the store where they switched over the SIM card, gave me a brand new phone, and still having problems with the phone. So I had to open a trouble ticket to look in to my problems with my data connection on my Galaxy Nexus. According to the store, support said I am the first to call about the problem.
Store rep was on a 4g HTC phone...his data was fine. My mom is on a LG 3g phone, her data is fine. All in the same areas of town as well. Why isnt mine? Tried CDMA only and nothing as well. For about 10 minutes, I had a 1x data connection that was slow but it worked. No nothing, again.
If I got a new phone, new SIM....then the problem is with Verizon somewhere and needs to be fixed. I am paying money for something I do not have and its a waste. I understand there will be problems from time to time, but don't release comments saying the problems are fixed when there are clearly still issues.
Anyone else still experiencing data issues specifically with the Galaxy Nexus?

Was a nationwide outtage Verizon said was resolved a couple days ago. Was working fine on Monday/Tuesday. This isnt related to the fix to resolve the reception problems. I can text and make calls just fine.
Try disabing vzw backup amd google +. Stopped my phone from doing exactly what you describe.
I've been having the issue where the hand-off from wireless to 3g tends to cause me to have no data connection at all (wifi shows up, but can't 'do' anything like browse to a website and such, and 3g never makes a 'connection', but I know I'm in an area where I should have plenty). A simple restart of the phone fixed the problem, but in the long term, I shouldn't need to do this in order to get a data connection. Just my experience.

I had the exact same problems. I returned it & reactivated my Thunderbolt. I hope Verizon actually fixes the radio instead of just changing the number of bars that get displayed. My lack of faith in this is why I returned it before my 14 days ended. I hope they will actually fix it & I'l try again in a few weeks. You might consider the same strategy.
Also, I had bad data & signal before Google+ was even on my phone.

I kinda doubt they are going to keep swapping out my phone over and over again until I find a working one. My original phone worked fine fora few days and probably is still messed up from the recent nation wide outages they had. They were hesitant on replacing my phone the first time.
Going to call support in a little while and follow up on my trouble ticket I logged yesterday. They better have a solution for me.
You paid $XXX for this device and you're afraid they aren't going to give you a new one because this one is defective? This issue may seem widespread because of all the complaints on this forum, but trust me, not everyone is having issues. Check my other thread.
Verizon already came out and said there isn't a performance issue with the device and their patch is just going to change the bars. So it's now or never.

Are people having slower 3G speeds on their CDMA devices? This is my issue as well. My sister's iPhone is consistently getting 1mbps> whereas I'm only getting ~100kbps down. Upload is worse at 47kbps.

I already got one new phone replacement yesterday. Going to call support yet again here in an hour or so and see if they have an update on my trouble ticket. But I would think it if was a defect in the phone, that this issue would be well known by now and posted everywhere on the internet. I understand what you are saying....just hope they get it fixed.
I'm having this problem too. I'll be on wifi at home, both wifi and cell bars will be blue. Everything is dandy. Then when I leave and turn off wifi the 3G icon appears and I have a few bars, but they are grey and websites don't work. I thought blue/grey just meant you are/are not logged in to google services, not whether or not you have data connected in general. A restart solves the problem, but it shouldn't come to that. This was a problem before the outage as when they were setting up the phone on release day in the store it took awhile to connect to 3G. Is this also why when I switch in to airplane mode I can't come out of it without a restart?

[Q] Lumia 900 Spotty Data Connectivity?

I occasionally will lose data connectivity out of no where. Half the time it happens after a soft reset. The 4G/LTE icon is still on the screen when this happens (mostly with full reception bars), and I still have access to voice.
The only "fix" I've encountered is turning airplane mode off/on three times, then powering the device off/on, repeating this process at least 3-4 times.
My sim card is provisioned correctly (obviously it works since I've had data before).
Was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this.

wow, of all the reviews, all the conversations with owners and testers, you are the first to mention this. Are you in an lte area? I know a higher concentration of drops appear to occur on lte areas
We'll all have to watch this one.
I think you have a bad phone. You will likely need a new phone to fix this. I know becuase this is what my 1st Droid Razr did. Does the phone get hot when this happens? does it seem slow as crap data speeds, like you can't even get a 360p youtube to load and web pages take forever. when this was happening my H+ S2 would make my RAZR look like it was on poor 3g/good 2g.
My isuse it some times droped EVERY thing or some times all data, but voice worked. A few times I fell back to 1x ( verizons 2G) and a lot of times 3g. (good day there 3g SUCKS and if any one tells you diffent take a 50 cal and .... ok you get it.)
Any way hope it gets fixed.
WPCentral has a review out (http://www.wpcentral.com/wpcentral-review-att-nokia-lumia-900) and noted the same thing. Possibly a bug: "We have seen an odd occurrence where our Wi-Fi connection can receive data but outgoing data crawls. We’re not sure why that is but haven’t seen it before on our other Windows Phones which causes us to raise an eyebrow. We’ve also had a few reports from early users noting the same behavior. Toggling the Wi-Fi on/off for a few minutes seems to do the trick but we’re a little concerned that this may an early bug."
Whats interesting is that users (like myself) who have moded their phones to re-enable the internet sharing option on devices that originally had it disabled - encounter the same issue. Leads me to believe that it could be a bug in the OS itself relating to internet sharing.

Woke up this morning and have not been able to access the T-Mobile network. No changes have been made that should have impacted the ability to connect. Greatly apprecaite any help.
If you made no changes then it's either your phone or the TMO system.

Well first, obviously, did you try rebooting your phone? Push into Airplane Mode and back?
Second, how is it not connecting to the T-Mobile network? No data connections? Or voice calls? Not connecting to the network at all?
Did you check your APN?
Can't really offer help if there is no accurate description of the problem at hand.
And finally, if you can gain access to post on XDA, why not contact T-Mobile themselves? As I'm pretty sure they can help you far better than many of us here with this issue of network connectivity. :silly:
Just sayin'.
I have the same issue. After a few days of getting brand new phone the data connection is messed up
Thinking of returning and getting S5
Call tmobile and have them refresh you problem solved
I went back to T mobile store. They asked me to wait 3 days. Refresh didn't help

Call up 611 on the phone (if possible) and say "Clear Location", that automatically clears out your phone connections and details (not your personal data) and resets the connections with the towers/antennas. You might need to speak with a rep or tech support to get that request, but they always do it if asked.
If you can't use the phone in question, call from another phone using 1-877-453-1304 and just give them your T-Mobile phone number in question and request the same.
Clear Location updates where your phone is being used and has it renegotiate its protocols, handshakes and talk, it essentially has your phone act like when it first booted up out of the box and was activated with T-Mobile.
I don't understand how the T-Mobile store didn't just perform that request/task with you when you were there....
They did do that and it worked in the store. But problem resumed when i got home

I would try the Clear Location again, just to see if it would fix it, if it doesn't, I would ask for a device swap in store to see if it works and holds.
It might be your account provisioning, but it was working fine then didn't, so it's most likely on T-Mobile's side. You can wait it out and when and if it works again, call up and request a credit to your account for the loss of service.
It seems to be your data isn't working at all but voice is, so you can check your Mobile settings and see if the APN is set to fast.t-mobile.com with IPv6.
Im going back today and swap for new phone. Im not sure if it was always working. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't
When i first got the phone i went straight home and used wifi. I only noticed it 3 days later when i was outside. It was after that, that I started monitoring the problem
I get the 4G icons but little data coming thru
Yeah, I would try a device swap and see if that corrects the issue, since it seems the data reset isn't.
BTW, the 4G icon is for 3G+ (HSPA), which is slower than the actual LTE speeds. If you get LTE speeds, the phone will display "4G LTE."
I just swapped the phone and new phone works as it should. In the store the TMo employee had a G3 and we compared Ookla Speedtest. Mine was definitely not working like his.
I hope this new phone won't have a problem. They only waive restocking once. I was ginna swap for S5 but decided to stick w G3 for the screen

That's good to hear that you finally got it to work fine.
Also, in regards to the restocking fee, it is waived if the device is defective. They should not be charging it when the device is broken, defective or not working as it should. The restocking fee is for those who just don't like their device and want to swap out for another one.
You might have to fight with them about it a bit, but no restocking fees on defective devices.

Verizon FoxFi Mobile Hotspot no longer working

It appears Verizon rolled out a silent update disabling FoxFi. I paid for this app and have been using it for several months without issue. Does anyone have a solution to this issue? See the most recent FoxFi Play Store reviews for more accounts of the issue.
Now I need root. This really sucks.

Not sure what happened but I posted about the exact same problem at the exact same time that you did but that thread has disappeared. It is affecting my Verizon Note 4 and my wife's s4. We both have unlimited data but are on separate accounts. I use a lot of data and she does not. 4 G signal is good at -88db and internet connectivity on the phone itself is good. Just can not use it as a mobile hotspot any longer. I did connect my laptop by USB and that is still working. I tried to look at the most recent reviews on playstore like you suggested but can not find any that are recent. Does anyone have any idea what is going on or if there is a workaround?

There is an option to sort by most recent reviews. I read through at least 15 other people discussing the issue within the last 24 hours. USB tether does appear to still be working but it now seems Verizon is throttling my data as well. I have used about 7.5GB this month and my speed has dropped to less than 1mbps and has remained there for over an hour even in the same spot that I was achieving decent speeds just yesterday. Not sure if there is a fix but I'm very unhappy about this as I'm on vacation and a solid 4g connection and hotspot were a huge help. I've been holding onto my unlimited data for years but it appears Verizon is really trying to push the few remaining users off.

I'm showing about 22 mbps on the phone and about 13 mbps on the laptop connected by usb. i used about 25gb in the last month. Just before Foxfi wireless went down my speed was less than 1 mbps. but now is back up. I need to contact the developers because Foxfi USB doesn't recognize that I purchased the key. I can only stay connected so long before it knocks me off and I have to reconnect. This is BS

Let me know when y'all get it fixed I'm going back to my Developer Edition Note 4 Hotspot still working. I was getting tired of Screwing with Kingroot anyway. Sorry Guys................
Edit: Just checked FoxFi not working on Note 2 either
I'm having the same issue too. I have root on my phone and had tried several different hotspot apps (Barnacle, OpenGarden, and some other random one) and none of those worked either. Hopefully there's a way around this. I haven't tried BT or USB yet though. I even went as far as thinking my phone did an update and so I reverted my phone to a backup 2 months ago. Still no go. =/
Has anybody with root checked to see if the native tethering app works if you remove the account check?
I don't have an option to turn off account check, but just tried it and it errored out starting.
Foxfi back up and running
Check your foxfi. ...mine is backup and running as of 8/28/15 420 am
I thought throttling was ruled out by the FCC, a while ago...

Same here. I don't know what happened, I didn't download a Foxfi update, but all seems to be well.

I don't know what happened but mine is back up this morning and running normally. Down load speed at 21 mbps as of 6:45 am EDT. Something must have been going on for there to be so many at once.
I'm still on kitkat. Blocked ota updates it works fine
I confirm that mine is working again. What happened?
Uh-huh mine is back up. Hopefully it was a foxfi thing and not Verizon testing a block

Very strange. Not sure why it's working again. And my speeds are back up a bit over what they dropped to last night (2+Mbps vs. less than 1Mbps for all of last night).
disaster averted
PHEW! glad it started working. i use my note pro 12.2 tablet in the car to tether to my phone and i use the tablet as my GPS (waze FTW!) and my media player (podcasts, music player, howard stern show, etc.). I drive for a living so this would have been a real bummer if i were not able to hotspot.
at first i was worried it was something verizon did, which really freaked me out, because i disabled OTA updates and the such, but glad to find out it was just on FoxFi's part. Luckily i have 2 Unlimited Data Plans and one i use at home in a cradlepoint router and as a backup, i can swap the sim out and put it in one of those little hotspot things.
thanks for all who contributed in this thread.
I can confirm also that foxfi is back up. It definitely wasn't a foxfi thing as i tried 3 other Hotspots (all which required root) and those did not work either. Verizon just trying to mess with us. bah!! I'm just glad we have it back. I know many of us rely on it for backup internet and tablet wifi on the go.
FoxFi is back. Check this out.
