[Q] Defy randomly dying

My defy is barely 2 months old, i am running CM7.1 since it was released and its quite smooth with no problems till now.
But recently i went to a remote place (i made another post somewhere) and switched SIM cards, i switched back SIM again now. Since then, my defy randomly dies sometimes while holding it and most times while in my pocket. My battery percent looks fine (i wiped it just in case).
This happened to me several times, i suspected the battery was loose, so at the beginning i reinserted my battery 2-3 times and it would start again. But now even after reinserting the battery it refuses to turn on, i usually need to connect it to a charger (or USB) and after the LED light turns on, i can switch it back on, disconnect it and use it again.. until it dies again randomly.
I tried inserting a piece of paper as padding to prevent the battery from moving, but didnt help much. When i shake it a bit, it dies too, so it might be a loose battery or some hardware problem, but the reason im baffled is why i cant turn it on again without connecting it to a charger, and also why it dies randomly when i leave it alone and didnt even touch it. Also, i never dropped it even once or mishandle it at all to make the battery be loose, when i insert tha battery, it still snaps/click into place just like when it was new.
ANy help suggestions will be appreciated. Sorry for the long post, just wanted to provide a detailed account.

Firstly, check if your setVsel settings is all ok and not too low down specially the voltages settings. If you're not using SetVsel, then check your 2nd-ini in system - overclock settings, see if it enable and check those individual settings which might be too low that caused the phone under power/voltage and triggered self shut down.
Another option to narrow down your issue is trying another battery. Buy or borrow from a friend. If the case of random shut down still occur, then it might be hardware issue in your Defy mainboard. BUT.. I would flash it to another rom to make 100% sure before sending it back to the shop.

Thanks a lot for the reply, im not sure if its an overclock or vsel issue because it even dies sometime while booting up if i move it around, so im guessing battery or mainboard issue?? Ill have to check with another battery first then... hoping its not a mainboard issue coz the nearest service centre is miles away from where i live

Got my One X on Friday (no sim card as the company I got it from had forgotten to send them out with the phone)
Have been playing around with it most of day yesterday, putting few apps on etc, haven' used it for games.
Last night when coming out of apps and going back to home screen was taking a while to display (kept saying "loading"), eventually home screen appeared. this happened a few times, I then tried to put a widget on screen and it just froze on loading and gave me a message to sat "Sense had stopped working" and then restarted. Thought I had best restart the phone so tried using the restart option and nothing, so went for switch off, which it did and now will not reboot.
Phone did feel a little hot on the back by the camera but did not think too much of it, when I try to turn on the phone I get the HTC screens then as soon as the homescreen comes up before you can unlock it the phone vibrates and shuts down.
Left the phone over night without charging it and is still the same this morning.
Have tried Factory reset, still no joy.
Led notification is flashing red/green constantly if you plug into charger.
Having read some about this on other HTC phones it seems my phone has overheated, but surely should have cooled down now after being off all night and not on charge (am in the UK so excessive hot weather is not the cause )
Finally received the sim card in post this morning so tried putting that in, still no joy, think I am going to put in in the garage as its really cold in there.
Any ideas before I send it back. I think its knackered.

The blinking leds means your phone is overheating, you better not use the phone while charing (until the problem is fixed).
The reason why sense 4.0 might be crashing all the time is because of the widget, if you use a Calender Widget it keeps crashing until you remove it! Try to remove all your widgets and see if that solves the problem.

Cannot use the phone on charge or otherwise, will not boot up past the HTC screen, widget will already be gone as have factory reset the phone, not sure how long it takes the Phone to cool down but has been off and in a cold room for over 12 hours now, so don't it will resolve itself. An option for other HTC phones is to take the battery out to reset the problem, but this is not an option on the One X, just wondered if anyone had any ideas.

You didn't do any rooting I assume ?
The device is probably damaged in some way, I'd say take it to the seller and see what he says. I haven't read these issues before so they are not a known problem... Probably a hardware problem ?

This is not normal. Phone should cool down completely in a matter of minutes, not hours. If it's overheating to such an extent that you can't use it, it is faulty.

Nope haven't rooted.
I think that the phone is faulty so back it goes then. Tried ringing the company but they are not open on a Saturday so will have to wait to see if they are open on Monday now (but this is a Bank Holiday) but we will see.

Just a quick update
Phone has now been off for 24 hrs, in a cold room, tried to switch on this morning still no luck cannot get past the HTC screens. Put it on charger and still showing led notification that phone is overheating. Boxed it back up, it is going back tomorrow and want a replacement
This is making me think do I want the One X with these overheating issues

I have the same problem about the loading, gonna try to remove the calendar widget; however Sense never crashed.
The heating your phone is experiencing is probably because it's faulty.
Sometimes mine becomes hot too, but in a bunch of minutes cools down.

Well, I never had so many loading screens and with ARHD rom this problem is completely gone because the sense is entirely loaded in memory. Anyway disabling the background activities breaks the multitasking which i consider bad because i found usefull the ability to switch between apps.

Got my replacement, had it a week now with no issues at all. Deffo something wrong with the last one, this one seems quicker and doesn't get so hot on the back where the camera is. So far so good. No screen flex problems......very happy bunny. Love it

Giving new phone is only a placebo effect. Because all HTC one x's overheat with high usage.
As soon as the CPU starts bursting more then 50% on only a 1000 MHz (max is 1500) then the phone starts heating up to over 53 degrees. At the point of 48 degrees reached in minutes the LED starts flaching red and green rappidly. when boosting up performance the battery will eventually reach 63 degrees celcius making it almost to hot to hold on to. Most apps crash when the 53 degrees is reached.
I havent tested a 100% CPU load on 1500 MHz but im guessing eventually the battery will burn, damage the unit beyond repair.
I have tested this on 3 different one X's from 3 different places, they all have this problem.
When you play tegra zone games like dungeon defenders it will take about 15 minutes to reach 48 degrees starting to make the led flash, warn for overheat. this game uses 50% of the CPU on aprox 1000 MHz.
I really dont wanna know what happens when you play a game wich uses 100% of the CPU on 1500 MHz...
This happens with and without charging. Wich makes me wonder.. Why they put in a CPU that uses so much power it burns down the battery and overheating it even on 50% CPU usage. This way there is absolutely no way the full power of the one x can ever be used without active cooling it. If you can use only 1000 MHz on 50% max what use is it to put in such a powerfull CPU, and games that will damage the phone.
For the record... Li-ion shouldnt be exposed to temps of 63 degrees for a long time. they will age in days, if not leak, explode or burn.
unbelievable that HTC made such a crappy device!
Not to mention that the battery dies in minutes when CPU uses full power.
to see your temp battery, cpu usage, cpu frequency and much more, download Cooltool in the playstore. its free. it can be custimized big time and root is not required
When a Li-ion battery is exposed to 40 degrees or higher the capacity will be reduced to about 35% a year. The one x becomes 50 degrees easily making the capacity drop even bigger. When using the phone allot above the 50 degrees will make you end up charging the one x multiple times a day after one year

[Q] Heat caused screen malfunction?

Well... i have a verizon galaxy nexus. running the latest crom with philz recovery.
i have a zerolemon extended battery as well.
while i was working today (i work outside) i was listening to pandora, this is a usual everyday thing, my phone decided to get super hot.
It was HOT. i figured it was a mix of the temperatures here in georgia and my cpu usage. So i powered it off and took out the battery for a few minutes, put the battery back in and put the phone in the DRY section of my cold lunchbox to cool off.
well 2 hours go by, i get off work and try to power the phone on and it only vibrated.odd, as it never happened before, i took the battery out and put it back in. try to power on again. it just vibrated. i thought it was dead.... until a minute later my notification led started flashing. so i called my self from the home phone and it rang!
so now i know the phone is on and functioning buttt.... the screen is completely black. no Boot screen/splash screen not even an led backlight. just black.
ive only seen this problem one time and there was no cure for it, has anyone had the same issue? help?

Phone rendered unusable

So for the last few months, my phone would randomly restart itself around once or twice a month. I didn't really care since it was a minor annoyance. Usually it would be when I was trying to do a bunch of things at once so I figured it might be a software problem. However, over the last two weeks or so, it has gotten worse. I usually charge my phone in the morning for about an hour while I get ready for the day. So by the time I leave the house, my phone is at 100%. What'll happen is I'll unplug it from the charger then will get about ten/fifteen minutes of uninterrupted usage before the screen goes black and the LG logo comes on. And the phone turns back on with less battery. Then, as I go to put in my knock code, it crashes again. Turns back on. Now with even less battery. This continues about five or six times until I'm left with anything from 3-15%. I can't make calls without the phone turning off, can't take pictures. Can't really do anything. However, there are no problems when the phone is charging. I can use it fine during that. I'm almost positive this is an issue with the battery (going to order a new one soon), however I just wanted to see if anyone else had this problem too and found a fix?

had this same problem many times. For me it's the battery. The battery really sucks on this phone.

So i will go straight to my problem.
Yesterday I left my Z5 Premium to charge over night (for like 4-5 hours). When i get up for work, I disconnected it from charger and quickly checked my phone (standard route - messenger, line app) those actions didn't take longer than 2 minutes. After that i left my on couch and went to bathroom. When i came back phone was super hot and with black screen. Tried to turn it on and off but nothing happened and decided to don't touch it and wait for it to cool down. Unfortunately it's been over 24 hours since that happened and still phone didn't even vibrate when i try to turn it on.
I started to thinking that battery or cpu is gone (when i put it back to charger again start to get super hot).

Is the phone hot towards the top part (cpu) or bottom/middle (battery)?
Sounds like you have an app that's stuck and running the cpu at max frequency constantly...did you install/update any app before the problem arose? If so, uninstall/downgrade it and see...
Are you using Flat Style Colored Bars by any chance? If you do and are running version 2.1.0 as it's known to cause cpu overheat, if it's the case downgrade to the previous version...
One last thing, have tried to force power down the phone (power button/volume up combo) that might fix a stuck app...

FACEBOOK MESSENGER, and LINE MESSENGER are the worse apps i have observed over the years using mobile resources.
if I were you, i would have done following with my z5p
1. Press and hold the Power button and the Volume Up button at the same time ( FIVE SECONDS MAX). The device will vibrate 3 times, release THE BUTTONS IMMEDIATELY !!!, this will soft reset your phone. leave for few minutes and restart. if it doesn't restart, plug the charger and see if its charging. Once charged, start your device.
2. I would have uninstalled many apps which i don't use. for example bloatware,
3. since my device is rooted, i have installed PURIFY with root access granted and it stops AUTO STARTING apps by default and having notification access panel. the only apps i want to have auto start i have manually screened them. this apps overall HELPS me big time. it works on NON ROOTED phones also! but not to its full potential.

The problem is that i can't make phone to start. Even when i put it to charge still doesnt indicate anything (screen is black, no vibrate, no led indication) thats why i created this thread.

if all above what me and DM said isn't helping then you must take the device to SONY TECH SHOP and let them look at your device!

You might have soft brick your phone... But you still should be able to recover it...it might take a bit longer though, your battery is completely drained...
Read this thread, it's old but should still be relevant...
You never answered my questions though, did you install or updated or did anything in particular before the phone started to act up?

No. I made settings to update only when phone is charging and is connected to wifi. Even made it to disable all data transfer while is locked. Phone itself isn't rooted and im using same apps since i bought phone.

Is your phone still completely Unresponsive?
Did you try to leave on a charge to see if it shows any sign of life (led coming up)
Go check that thread that I posted, you'll bring it back to life...
They're hard to brick unless it's an hardware problem otherwise they can take a beating trust me

Hello again.
Just want to leave a quick update:
After finally I got free time I read thread that suggested me to read and started to attempting to revive phone. It's been an hour since I put phone on charger. Still no red led. Only "hot" area is at shell that covers CPU - area that is in red circle.
Everything else is cold. CPU temperature is around 38-42°C pretty normal I would say. So how much time I should leave to charge? Last time when phone was running battery was on 100% (last Friday).
Update 2:
I measured voltage of battery and it's 2.81V
I will leave it to charge till I sleep and tomorrow will need to purchase new battery.
When I bought phone I had problems with battery but with last update from SONY I managed to use phone for 3 days with one charge (normal use - few captured pictures, an hour games, 30 minutes watching Californication on Netflix and FB and Line - less than 10 minutes).
So can you recommend me an site where I can purchase new battery (I want to be original if possible)?

Well guys I have bad news. Problem is in hardware.
After I left phone to charge over night when I woke up I unplugged charger and measured voltage of battery. The results was bad: voltage of battery was 0V. Then I unplugged battery and put phone to charge without connected battery to measure what voltage is going to battery and it was 0.61V.
So thanks again for trying to help me and encouraging to fix problem.
