[Q] Will the new Tmobile software update affect my rooted SGH-T989 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Yesterday I received a message from Tmobile that there is a new software update for my phone. I was at work and did not want to bother with it so I tried to say not to the update and the only option is to postpone for a maximum of 1 day. To get out of the message I selected the home key. I keep getting the reminder every 4 hours and the message will not go away from notifications drop down screen.
Tmobile seems very eager to push this update out, I rooted my phone about a month ago so I could use the tethering feature when I'm on call without the extra expense, also used Titanium to freeze the bloatware apps as well. Will this software update affect or undo my root access? Does anyone know if the update is good or bad?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Yes you will lose root but it can be rooted easily using the same method. This question has been answered over and over try searching a bit.

Thank you for the information I did see threads on the subject but they were on older software updates.I did not run across one that talked about this latest update, I did not know if there was something different or if the the new update made it difficult to re-root. Some updates may only be beneficial to Tmobile and not the end user. Does anyone have the specifics on the update? Pros and Cons?

I'd like to know if the update is worth it as well.
My phone is currently rooted but I was not the one who did it so I'm afraid to lose root because I wouldn't know how to re-root it.
Is there a way to update without losing root?

I went ahead and updated my phone and it did not undo root. It is a software update that will allow u to upgrade to ICS.

You sure about that? If updating to the UVLDE 2.3.6 GB via OTA, I am pretty sure you lost root. You probably still have the super user app installed, but that in and of itself does not ensure root. Try using a app that requires root access such as Titanium Backup.

[Q] will a sys update mess up a stock rooted phone(2.2 froy or cause it to lose root?

saw on a friends phone that a system software update to phone is available...He canceled and wanted to know if updating would cause loss of root or any other effect..
bump. i've actually been wondering about this myself. any help would be greatly appreciated!
yes, installing an OTA update will almost assuredly wipe out your root.
I'm rooted, tried to update ota and it goes through the motions like it's gonna work, then just stops and gives me the exclamation point! I think you have to unroot first. I just installed latest RUU and now I'm updated and rooted.
wouldnt the best security feature for sprint be to build the update in a way that wont update your phone if your rooted? is this already the case?

Rooted & Getting System Update?!?!?

So I have stock 2.2... rooted.... and I removed verizon crapware.
I just got the notification that an update is ready for me? this is the one that contains the verizon app store... as well as I think a new kernel.
Is it safe to install? would it even install? If I did would I lose root?
You would loose root if it takes.
The update may fail depending on if it checks for stock apps. Not sure if this update will.

Well...since the root process also gives s-off... I'm a little confused about all of this. Shouldn't that let me get root back? and wouldn't the update fail since I don't have stock recovery?
Do I say install? Aaaaaigh
If you let it try to restart and install the update ClockworkMod will deny it, and the notification will go away for a while (either one day or one week, I can't remember).
I got the notification an hour or so ago on myn's warm twopointtwo.

Some one might be better able to explain root vs. S-OFF than I but ill give it a try.
Root is for your operating system. It's like in winblows having administrator privileges so you can execute high level commands, modify system settings, etc...
S-OFF allows for your phones bootloader (like a PCs BIOS) to flash unsigned files. So, if we do get an update that removes root, we can flash a custom recovery program, to then install a ROM that does have or can be rooted.
Do a backup. I don't think the update will install or stop bugging you to do it. You should be able to modify your build prop to stop the messages.

I'm rooted and have S-Off, standard 2.2 ROM.
I would like to apply this OTA when it arrives, mostly because I'm a developer and have posted a few apps into the VCast store. Need to confirm they are there.
So should I hold off on applying it, or assume I can just use Unrevoked to re-root after the OTA?

+1 for this, I just want to install this for the sake of being up-to-date. I need my precious root, though.

Why can't you look in the VCast store otherwise? If your phone is not the newest version then it won't have access to it?
Yeah... I would actually love to be able to install this... Especially since if I read correctly I would keep root.
As for the bloat, I can just remove it like the other bloat...

I want this update but I'm on virtuous 3.1 and didn't get it... I want the apps and what not

Mostly because I'd like to be able to check my vCast stats and comments from my phone, plus I think it's a good idea to be a user of the service if I'm selling apps on it.

We have several Dinc's here at work. The only phones to receive this update so far are the slcd incredibles. Amoled doesn't seem to be getting it. And there appears to be a side effect after the update is applied, if you had a bluetooth device connected you need to unpair and re-pair the device. People are noticing that the scrolling seems much faster after the update so I'm going out on a limb and assuming the update had something to do with updating the slcd drivers.
Also had an issue on one where the phone wouldn't boot up after the reboot until the battery was pulled out and put back in.
***This did not break root on any of the phones***

Mine is one of the originals (had it since day one) and I received the OTA... it just didn't take cause I'm rooted (guessing it has something to do with replacing the recovery with clockwork.
I'd love to know how to apply it in case it was more than just crapware (which I will uninstall since i'm rooted)

I'd like those bug fixes, but it's not worth losing root :/
So it looks like someone will need to grab the OTA update... and repackage it as an update.zip for clockwork

tethering after T999UVLJ4?

Was just wondering if there was anyone that uses the phone that is not rooted and after the update still been able to tether with the changing of the APN in the device settings?
Only reason I ask is I have a One S as well that just after the update I can no longer change the APNs the device switches back on its own.
Opps so sorry this belongs in q a
if you can please move.
subscribing for a response - i just cancelled my update to hear if the update will be an issue
I'm tethered to it right now.
How are you guys tethering without root? Foxfi?
Oh crap I'm sorry, totally didn't see the not rooted part.
Make my own APN in the settings of the to bypass the software on the phone and on my computer changed the user agent string of my browser to that which is on my phone. Can also use a tablet one too.
That works as long as the phone allows you to change APN setting.
The previous version of software on the galaxy does allow you to set and use your own APN.
I'm just not sure about this new version.
Don't really want to update and lose that ability again like on the one s I have too.

I'm considering rooting to tether as I have to travel a lot in the upcoming months. What guide did you use?
Did you have to unroot to get the update then update then root again? What's the flash counter?
Lastly, what app do you use? Free Wifi Tether?
Thanks! I can PM if you want.
Dumb Question (noob)
I'm now rooted on UVLH2 if I update to the new release today, will it remain rooted or must I re-root, and is there a different root procedure or do I again use the same root process?
Sorry If I'm posting a question in the wrong place.
Thank you!

I rooted mine before UVLH2 & after the update root was gone with counter set to 0. So, I guess same will happen for a new update & you'll have to root again.
By the way I checked for software update over data connection and got the message " Access to the software update service is provided to users in the order in which they request it. Try later."
What does that mean?

Phone: T-mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 16+32(class 10) gig
ROM: Stock (not sure for how long!)
Rooted: Of course Yes!
Past companions:
HTC Touch Diamond
Nokia 1110
Motorola C155
Try the APN trick method and change your computers user agent to that of the phone.
Works before the update I know that just not sure if will work after the update.
As far as upgrade from rooted? If the update comes thru and you have stock recovery should update ok but will probably lose root.
Anyone yet try this after the latest update.
No one has tried this after the update at all?

U do loose root but you can gain it back the same way you originally gained root. I just tried the free wifi app from the app store and it worked flawless. Hope it helps.
I never had root on mine (yet)
But do the tether work around and I also use with another provider.
That after the update to my One S I can't even change the APN for use on the other provider.
But I did go ahead and do the update to the Galaxy S 3 to UVLJ4 and not rooted can still change APN for use with other providers and can do the APN trick for free tethering yet.
tethering works for me .... mess around with the settings

[Q] Sprint update ZV7_to_ZV8_EMR1_inc

Hi folks. Just got the Optimus G for my Sprint plan. I immediately rooted the phone, and within 24 hours of getting it it now wants to apply an update ZV7_to_ZV8_EMR1_inc. I'm afraid to do so because I don't want to end up with the phone unrooted and locked down (I will never again buy an unrootable phone). Has anyone else done this update, and if so did it affect your root status or ability to re-root afterwards? Thanks!

I installed the update and then rooted my phone without issues.
I was curious too. Here's the response from other members

Update applied & unrooted, re-rooted ok
Thanks all for the replies and sorry for the duplicate thread, I promise I did look first before posting and didn't see it. Anyway as the other thread stated, the update removed root access but I was able to re-root fine.

Galay Note 8.0 I467 Forced Update After Root

So I finally figured out how to root the AT&T Galaxy Note I467. I did it twice, the first time I did it, then manually updated to latest firmware which lead to losing the root. So I did it a second time and an update popped on my screen which I delayed. What happened overnight is that it automatically updated itself anyways and now I lost the root, has anyone experienced this or figured out a way to avoid new updates? My new plan is to buy the super su pro so after I re-root it I will be able to safely update to the newest firmware and not lose my root. Just something I wanted to bring up.

If you use SU Pro and keep persistent root it will keep it. Check the main i467 root thread for details.
