Q: Need help getting sprint to recognize my phone - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

If someone could use the QPST software to make a backup of what the e4gt has inside the device.. since i flashed a file in the wrong slot of odin i have had so many problems.. currently my phone can make phone calls, text(no MMS) and connect to 4g but if i dont have 3g. it also says it needs to be activated yet i can still receive and make calls. i think it is something i did with qpst when i had to put the meid numbers back into the phone and somehow changed some other stuff.. you can remove any personal info(phone number, username, etc) but i just need to know what to do to get this back working properly.
i thought about using a pit file in odin but not sure if that would even help in my situation.
ok so just got finished talking to sprint and got my msid and msl back to what they were supposed to be. now i just need to figure out what else i changed in qpst. if someone could use qpst and save the file from there phone(take out msl, msid and phone number) then i could just put my information there and be good to go... PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME do this

Try updating profile usually any problems with connecting to the network or the I'd of your phone to the network will be fixed. I if not review your steps on what you did in qpst and try to find out what you may have changed.

No nees to pit.
I swear I responded to this already. Hm.
What does settings/about_phone/status say your MSID is. It may be the problem. If it is not a number clise to your phones number call sprint and ask for it. They will tell you how.
Other options: a reprovision, as suggested.
##72786# is a DSA reset. It may help force a reprovision.
If all else fails, back up EVERYTHING and do a ##786# as a last resort. It will work, but has risks.
You will need your MSL for my suggestions unless you make an anycut/nova/apex activity shortcut to com.android.sprintmenu/ SCRTN (i think. Its the only one that looks like that)
Good luck

well i think my problem may be that my msl is 0000000... should i call and get the msl from sprint and then change it with qpst?

Thats usually the default.. i used 000000 as my msl in qpst to flash prl 11119. If not theres an app on the market and other ways to get your real msl.. the guy above was speaking about your MSID.. sometimes its the same as your number but a lot of times different.. but if your msid is wrong on the device it will cause all kinds of problems

Again the person stated could be MSID.. im not talking about tye MSL.. MSID/MIN is a ten digit number.. its needed to provision the phone correctly.. if he messed up his MSID/MIN in QPST then he needs to find his and correct it..
MSL is like a SEC or sublock code needed for the device to change certain things.. default is normally 000000. If that doesnt work you need to retrieve it from the device or from sprint. I dont think he could have wrote a prl to tye device if he didnt have the correct MSL thus he probably did something else wrong.

Yeah ( i know, thats why I said he should check it. )
ADD: If it is MSID he could get it frim Sprint if he doesnt have it,
then, assuming a stock dialer, could ##(puthisMSL)# and enter MSID manually.
Is MSID one of the ten thousand number sequences on the box¿
I think its MAC, MEID etc

No.. mac and meid are on there.. msid wouldnt be because its assigned by sprint.. the meid is tied to the device.. msid/min and the telephone number are assigned by sprint.. for example if you change your telephone number your msid is likely to change but in some instances it will remain what it was before.. if people are having issues like he described first thing you would want to check is the programming of the phone.. if the phone was manually programmed (qpst in this case) he could have messed it all up lol.. thats why in the prl threads it says dont do it if your not sure what it is.. qpst has lots of tools in it.. he could have done a number of things wrong if directions werent followed to a T.. either way hope he gets it working right lol

Cracked screen--Bought replacement--Dies when I swap
I have a black SPH-D710 on Sprint. I cracked the screen, so I bought a white replacement on eBay without the battery or most of the guts.
I took the phone apart and swapped the screens and reconnected the boards and it powers up great... except that I have no service. If I connect back to the cracked screen, it powers up great and I get great service. I was hoping for a quick and dirty swap, but it seems like there must be some code in the screen-side circuit board that is foiling my attempt. I found this video [goo.gl/YNLZE -- xda won't let me post links, yet] where the guy seems to suggest that my problem is the IMEI, but I don't have the first clue about trying to find that in the old part and moving it to the new one, if that's even the problem.
Ideas?

yea keep calling sprint tell them your phone is acting up and you want to hard reset it to see if that helps. Honestly each rep will tell you something different just keep calling and be stern and nice about it...
First rep I spoke with gave me my MSL. Keep trying.
Should I just say,"msl code" or say I did a reset and need to reprogram etc

I told them that I wanted to reset my phone to factory defaults and that I read on the internet that you could do that with ##786#, but that it was asking me for a password. The rep put me on hold for about 20 seconds then gave me my MSL.

For anyone intersted there is an MSL app in the market for Appbrain
I read somewhere that the MSL codes are printed on your receipt of purchase. You may want to check there before you go through the hassle of calling again.
call sprint and just be honest with them. it takes 5 minutes.
Yea, call Sprint, just say you want to do a master reset and need the MSL.

CriKet data flashing problem...

ok first i would like to start by saying i am not an expert in the phone flashing field.
I've flashed a few phones in my day with qpst and cdma workshop, never a problem. until now.
I just recently changed my phone number. I used cdma workshop and qpst to write the new numbers to my phone and now im not getting data stream on the mobile network. Under wireless and network settings, the mobile network is check marked but just says "turning on..." and just stays like that.
anybody have any suggestions? am i missing something?
all old numbers were changed to the new number and old nai and mms were changed as well. and then phone was *228
phone is unlocked and rooted. duh.
phone worked perfectly fine with old number and im on the same data plan.
any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Did you unlock the phone before writing the changes to it in qpst?
yes phn was unlocked.
Any luck?

Luck with ? The phone was unlocked previous to the new flash.
I am noticing something though. when i *228 my phone, after reboot my imsi is changing to a different number.
Are you on cricket network? if so could you check and see if you mdm(phn number) is the same as your imsi. easiest way to check is; (menu, settings, about phone, phone identity)
No its different. My imsi is different from my meid. My imsi is 31027+myphone#

So now i have a new number and data works fine. dont know what the deal was.
and i guess here, cricket uses 2 different numbers. one for data(imsi) and the other is the mdm. weird that in other locals and other phones use the same number as both.
anyway, i asked what the problem was. the lady said she couldnt tell me. and that it was probably my fault for *228ing a flashed phn. I laughed and proceeded to *228 my phn in front of her and the phn still worked. wtf? i guess other flashes, i guess cheap/basic flashes cant do *228 ?
and why qpst can? anyone?
what do you use for flashing?
Lol that's weird and I use cdma workshop.

For everyone with data problems, I think I have found the solution

Ok, so I know a lot of us are having data issues and some are not
I think I may have figured it out
It is most probably because you ordered from a 3rd party retailer that didn't program the phone properly.
I ordered from Wirefly, and they never programmed my MSID, just the cell phone number
1. So, call tech support and have them reprogram your phone. They will give you a ##xxxxxx# code, then you enter in your cell number and MSID
2. let it reboot
3. update PRL, Firmware, and Profile in that order. Restart again
you *should* have better data connectivity.
PLEASE REPORT WITH RESULTS
Its called data reset and you can do it by your self if you ask them for the MSL number...
The MSID should be in the phone already if its activated the other SSID or w.e. Is your phone number
But good looking out for others who dont know

No if those numbers are wrong even by one number your phone will not be ativated
(I believe)
I think it just resets the phone signal to server/tower but frequently check for prl and profile updates that always seems to help a little bit especially when traveling out of your normal usage area

Honestly, I have yet to figure out any type of pattern as to what numbers are assigned. However, most commonly, it is your MDN that is the same as your phone number (PTN).
There's no good general rule of thumb to go by. Sometimes both of them are the same. Some times they're in different area codes as your PTN. Can't say I've ever seen an MSID be the same as the PTN without the MDN being the same as well. But anything is possible.
If you want, you can PM me your phone number. I don't work until Wednesday, but it only takes a couple clicks once I get in. I'm willing to do this for people, but within reason. Just PM me.

The MSL can be found by downloading "terminal emulator" and typing "getprop ril.MSL" It is case sensitive.
From there, go to the phone, and type ##72786# , at the SCRTN screen select yes, let the phone reboot, let the activation go through its thing NOT TOUCHING THE SCREEN unless it tells you to. Let it do a reboot again.
This will do everything in OPs post without so much hassle.

Yes. ##SCRTN# in the dialer resets the radio data (msid and mdn and a couple other obscure codes); think of it as a hard reset only for your activation. Upon reboot, the phone will go through hands free.
Also, ##"your msl"# takes you to the manual programming screen

Ok, n00b question. Do I have to be rooted to use terminal emulator?
I am using Terminal Emulator Pro and when I enter getprop ril.MSL and hit enter, I get nothing but the next line. Also, everytime I enter the ril.MSL part, the "i" changes to capital "I".......is that the problem? I assume I an not supposed to use the quotations either right?
Also, another n00b question, what is SCRTN? Is that just the phone dialer screen?

We are going to need more info then that. Your AAA and HA user name name and password have nothing to do with getting calling to work just data. Make sure you entered the correct meid in QXDM and that u also put in your phone number and mdn as well in qpst.

i got calling/texting to work, finally....
my msid was different than my actual phone number and i didn't realize that.
changed it in ##msl# and voila, calls and text!
now i just can't get that data working, i've manually entered all the usernames and such in ##data# but that didn't work.
so i went the route of using qpst, data still doesn't work.
weird quirk though is that it seems the settings in qpst aren't sticking maybe? i'll write the PPP box to phone and then when it boots i'll read it to make sure it's right, but it will be gone.
Additionally when i try to input the correct settings in the advanced tab on ##data# i cannot get them to save. I'll exit data programming mode and it will all just change back to <not set>.
that may have some problems with it.. i can try flashing a sprint rom again to reset the data settings to start fresh maybe?
again i appreciate any help you can give me because i've been working on this for damn near 4 days!!!!
edit: i've attached my list of important things to have while programming, most of which was pulled from data programming on intercept.
i trust that you won't try to steal any of my number and what not, if it's possible.

another weird thing i found is that if you want your AAA password just open up ##data# on the intercept and click on the password like you're editing it, long press it and hit select all, and then turn the phone sideways like landscape mode and you can see the passwords in plain text! that's how i got mine anyways... seemed easier than reading through the adb log.
edit: TO BE CLEAR that way of getting the AAA password ONLY works on the intercept running 2.2 STOCK. It may or may not work for you, if it works for you then we can probably assume it will work for others who have problems with adb like me.

WARNING!!!! EFS clear is going to wipe that phone clean, you'll have to re-input the ESN (I think) and prl, etc. Least that's what I believed happened to me last time I did an efs clear.

i will do that once i am off work!
you guys are a lot of help, and i appreciate it.
i just want to start off fresh because i was about half asleep when i entered all the numbers in and i'm about 99.5% positive i funked up a number somewhere that shouldn't have been effed with.... i'll let you know if it works!
well! reflashing to stock fixed my problems.
followed your guide and entered all the settings verbatim.
the 3g icon is up, data is working .....very slowly.
this leads me to believe that it's not actually 3g and just 1x.
according to mobile speed test i'm going at about dial up speeds (not even 1x) with 3 bars of service.
any idea??
got it!
it just fixed itself when i cycled data mode on and off, thanks guys!
getting solid 1 mbps downloads with half that for uploads in my area of NE!

I am actually from India! Using it on a indian service provider. About the guess yeah, I dont remember actually if i changed anything. I even flashed the phone to stock/custom rom. No use
Flashing stock ROM wont reset those settings. You will need to reset the activation on a stock ROM. I'm not sure of the code for that but its been in the treads a few times....
Which would be ##786#.....
Still no avail brother!

Is this device compatible with the 3g service your provider uses?
Yes it is. I have been using for quite a some time now.
Having the exact same issue. Not sure what caused it or how to fix it. I too am on stock rom

Have you contacted your cellular provider? If you changed some settings, most likely calling your provider to get the right settings will be your best course of action.

Alright,so over here in india we use nvitems (dump files) for evdo Else known as 3G. I tried everything but it doesnt seem to go back. Any way to make a phone go back TOTALLY to its 1st stage? When it came out when it was shipped? As in the whole parameters to be new. I tried flashing new parameters, prl, No avail. Just cannot see the 3g logo.
Any help?
We are probably going to need a little more info than that if you want help...

Agreed... ankurcshah you've given us very little to go on here. You have to remember that the ET4G your using is mainly a US/Sprint base device.
Have you rooted, installed a rom/moden... Help us out some so we can help you out.

As far as I know and someone else has already posted this... You can do a factory reset to bring the os back to a "out of box" state. But this in no way will effect, change or the dialer or radios. Those settings are set by the carriers.

Again, this is your original post. In it you clearly state that you "guess" you did the "##DATA# dialer code and" messed something with out my knowledge".
After rereading your original post again I'm thinking it really should have read this way...
"I went into ##DATA# and messed with some of the settings and didn't really know what I was changing." See the difference???
Those setting in "##DATA# or set by the carriers... They are there to tell the radios on your device how to communicate with and what frequency to use for the towers your cellular providers uses.
I'm going to assume that when you got your ET4G you had to contact your cellular provider to get it setup to use their service, right???
Questions:
1. If not how did you get it setup to see their towers???
2. Did they (provider) give you some kind of codes to enter in the ##DATA# settings???
3. If they did, do you still have them and have you tried that???
I've said this before... I really think you need to contact your provider and see if maybe they can re provision your radios.

Nope, I just needed the dump file for the 3g to work, 3g works on my dad's phone and it doesnt on mine. I use the same dump as his. Still? Wierd
Questions:

I just flashed a prl
2. Did they (provider) give you some kind of codes to enter in the ##DATA# settings???
nope, I had set the msl to 000000
3. If they did, do you still have them and have you tried that???
They are not aware of such a thing also.

I tired they don't understand "reprovision radios"

As you were saying about the out of box state? Could you elaborate a bit more on that. I just need to reset the data settings of the phone to the state in which the phone had come. In the sense as in out of box.
Answers are in bold.
Thanx for your help

The reset I mentioned is a "factory reset" ... But like I already posted... It will only delete all of your user data and reset settings like wifi, email passwords...
It won't reset the radios...
If you had already flashed these files to get your phone working when you got it, Don't you still have them???
