So i am finally pulling the trigger and getting the nexus. I am not new to XDA flashing ROMs or even development in general but i have learned the hard way it is better to be safe than sorry. Anyway I live in San Francisco and will be buying the GSM version from the google play store so i will just fire off my questions.
1. so this would be where i go to unlock root and flash a custom recovery http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310 and on the list my phone would be option 7 correct ???????
2. are there any steps that i should be careful on or just take extra care???
3. Any useful tips in general i will be testing other ROMs and Kernels but will probably end up using AOKP and Franco kernel since i know him from a previous phone.

Do nandroid backups before flashing new ROMs so you can always go back to your previous setup.

At least when you do it manually you will know what went wrong and at what step and if you need to ask for help it will be a lot easier for you to get it of you have that information.
And as a bonus you get to learn!

There's nothing wrong with the program. It works flawlessly but I know most people on here like to do it the manual way.

The script is a horrible way to do things. It's slower than using advice and fastboot directly, unless you are a beginner in which case it still sucks because it's much better to actually take the time to learn how stuff works.... makes it easier to fix things later on.

If you "break" your phone in a week/month/year/whatever...
And come back requesting help...
We're MORE than glad to help.
However, you'll find the process of diagnosis and repair to go much more smoothly when you have ADB/Fastboot set up.
Which is really 99% of the work in unlocking/rooting manually.
If you have a bricked device you're
a ) in a panic
b ) not going to be able to tell if the actual ADB/Fastboot set up isn't working...
Or if your device is broken to the point where it won't be recognized even on a working set up.
KNOWING you have ADB/Fastboot set up correctly is, again, %99 percent of fixing your phone.
If you come in and say "adb devices" doesn't show anything it could be TWO possible reasons, rather than one.
Oh...
And learning ftw.
And the fact that adb pushing items to our MTP phones is sometimes easier than using drag-n-drop.
And...you might at one point need this ability to unbrick =].

The title says it all. The only prerequisite is that you already have the drivers for your phone installed. Which i assume most people looking at this thread do as they were needed to get root in the first place.
Always back up your stuff and any apps before using.

No problem. Thats how i am too. Thats why i make everything i use flashable or simple and easy.
Thank you SO SO SO SO SO much! I had installed the netarchy-nexus kernel on mine, which killed my battery way to fast, and I couldn't remove it...not even with my nandroid backup.

You and me both. I just learned earlier this week that fastboot and adb were drivers that come with sdk. It is confusing without a literal step by step guide. I would like to learn all the processes and make a guide for total beginners. Unless anyone else knows of one already in existence for the NS4G?
I must admit, though, that the more threads I read the more confident I get about following through with it. All of you devs and themers and advanced users, I tip my hat to your knowledge and helpfulness with threads like these.

thanks for this. I wanted to return to stock for the update and did it the long way,because i don't think this was posted yet. I think anyone that is rooting their phone should at least learn how to use sdk and the commands. Im glad I had to force my self to do it that way, but this will really help for the next time with one click root and now unroot its great. I had to root again because it was delayed and cant stand stock
No problem and yes the long way is beneficial from a learning standpoint. But i prefer quick and easy and anyone who wants to learn the long way just open the run.bat file in notepad and teach yourself

Some think this is a lazy way, but some of us have to find work arounds for stuff like this. Right now I'm stuck using Wxp/ home, tried everything I could think of and still couldn't get sdk installed . This helps enormously. I don't mind learning the hard way, but I also like to do things efficiently and save time.

Sorry for this thread and it might be dumb to somewho are a little more savy with odin and computers. I had over 12 android phones nexus, evo,nexus s,g1 mytouch 3g n so on. Never had to root using odin it was usually unlocking bootloader or just using terminal. It would be greatly appreciated if this could happen and im sure there are many people that think same way. So please if u wanna bash me n say i shouldnt root if i cant use odin then fine but this is a new method and so would alot of other ppl cause it seems we have a good development crew popping up roms n mods n kernals right and left. If a bounty is needed i will be more than happy to donate. Ty for your time.

The odin3 method is honestly very simple. You literally can root your phone in less than 3 minutes with the click of a button. I've used terminal emulator and adb methods of rooting and I can say that the only other easier method other than odin3 that I've used was z4. You can do it. Just have faith and confidence. Terminal emulator is much more harder than using odin3.

Just follow directions it is so easy. when I had my sgs4g I felt the same way, then I grew the balls and used Odin. That wasn't to root it was to convert to gb but believe me when I tell you it is easy and pretty much flawless. Just do it follow steps

Odin might be one of the simplest ways of rooting around. Although in the vibrant days it was extremely unreliable. No so any more, its pretty much rock solid.

Yes it does.I have rooted 9 GSII.with version 2.2.will root all gingerbread.up to 2.3.7.and a version for Ics is in the works.

Ok I know you guys are all die hard Android users and I see where your coming from when you don't think this would be smart but, does anyone know of or could make a toolkit for Rooting/Unrooting/Recovery/etc for mac? Like a dmg installer not one that needs to be on windows?

I've always done manually myself from terminal in os x and I agree it is pretty easy and safer (depending on user error). But it would be nice if Mac users also had an easy one click toolkit. I'd personally wouldn't need it but not everyone wants to manually run terminal commands.

Alright i know im probably about to get flamed for this but i'm kind of a newb. I've had my nexus for quite some time and love the device. love it to the point where i didnt see an overwhelming need to flash/root it. however, with the new JB update release id really like to install it to play around. Is there any tutorial i could be pointed to that would walk me through the steps? I search around through the Verizon Development section and couldnt find one. any help would be greatly appreciated.

You are gonna have to unlock the bootloader which will totally WIPE YOUR DEVICE!! Make sure that you have everything backed up that you need/want before doing anything.

yea im trying to unlock it right now, cant seem to fish out the drivers to get my computer to recognize it though.... installed the drivers for XP straight from samsung to no avail

Download the Nexus toolkit 7.1 and use that. It's very easy and straightforward. What's your gmail? We can Gchat and I'll help you through it.

I've had success with wugfresh's gnex toolkit. It has a auto driver install tool and straight forward instructions on how to configure the drivers manually if it doesn't work:

after unlocking the bootloader and after everything signalled as okay the nexus seemed to be not booting

hope i'm not too much of an inconvenience but it's a brand new device
The fact that your serial number isn't listed leads me to believe it wasn't properly detected by adb although I don't know if that matters because I have never used the toolkit because running the commands manually is so much easier.

UPDATE: i googled it but now it's showing an android with a red exclamation mark in the middle, i think i ****ed up
UPDATE 2: i managed to reboot but it didn't go into fastboot and instead is showing the boot animation
UPDATE 3: it booted correctly but i doubt it's rooted because the toolkit isn't saying anything

I found the problem, i didn't reboot after unlocking the bootloader, it caused all kinds of chaos, but i managed to get it right, thanks anyway

Just flash the factory images and it'll restore your nexus back to stock

Indeed, and it's much more informative to run the simple commands manually. Sure, it might be easier for a newbie to click a few things, but when something goes wrong, there's nothing like manual commands to let us troubleshoot effectively.

I always do everything the long way, much more control over what's happening... Plus, is it the worst thing in the world if people learn some fastboot and adb commands so that they may actually use them in the future to recover their device or troubleshoot something that there isn't a toolkit for? I'm all in favor of everyone having as much knowledge as they possibly can, and encourage self sufficiency wherever possible. Its almost at a point know where people expect and rely on toolkits and the like way too much.

Fully agree! :good: Wug's toolkit is great for new Android users, I'll gladly say, but after someone's initially rooted and flashed a ROM, it's not hard to pick up the few basic commands. Ultimately I find it faster to right-click to open an admin command prompt, then do the commands I want.

Exactly. I have a major sense of accomplishment when I use commands to do everything I want done.
My knowing fastboot and adb commands saved my first gen kindle fire numerous times. I have a fastboot cable that I made to fix it now, but before I did, knowing those commands is the only reason the thing isn't a paperweight.
