[Q] My Phone Vibrates Continuously as I hold the Power Button to Turn it on - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hello, everyone, I have a problem with my phone.
Before the problem, I was rooted without any custom roms. I have never installed any custom roms on my phone. I have always been stock, but rooted.
This morning, T Mobile pushed an updated to my phone. I did some research (not sure if I did enough) and apparently it was the UVLDE update. So I clicked it, phone restarted in 5 seconds, and restarted in clockwork mod, I believe. It was the screen that allows me to reboot along with some other options and is navigated by pressing up and down on the volume buttons.
I pressed reboot phone and the phone rebooted and worked normally throughout the day.
Now, I wake up (and I am not sure what happened, maybe I accidentally turned the phone off in my sleep) and I attempt to turn the phone on and it vibrates consecutively, on and off, and sometimes the screen blinks.
Is there any way I can fix this issue?
Thanks for your time. I performed a search, but I couldn't find the issue or I couldn't find any keywords.

Maybe a brick? And questions go in the questions section for future reference.

Thanks. I'll remember that for the future.
I don't know if it's a brick or not. I haven't tried anything fancy yet. I'm looking for assistance before I go any further, if there is any further place to go.

If you have clockwork mod on your phone and you can get to the clockwork mod menu, go to mounts and storage and plug your phone into your computer and click mount usb storage and copy this rom to your phone.
http://theunlockr.com/2011/11/29/how-to-unroot-the-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-t-mobile-version/
Then go to install zip from sd card and pick the one you just copied to your phone. It'll put you back on stock 2.3.5 hopefully that will work and if it does you will have to re root your device because this zip puts your phone to completely stock and removes the root. Hopefully this works for you it has for me in the past good luck.

Update.
I plugged it in to my computer via the USB.
Apparently, the computer can't recognize itbecause the device has malfunctioned (not sure how accurate that is), but the phone has turned on and I can use it.
I know the problem still, exists, so should I still follow your advice, JPOKeefe's, and go completely back to normal after erasing everything? I have no problem doing that to save my phone.
Modification:
Maybe the battery was just dead... which is why it's 0 % charged and it won't turn on after it was working perfectly before I slept.
If that is the case, then I am prepared to defend my intelligence! I guess it's just some paranoia from the update this morning that didn't actually go through.

Honestly you don't NEED to do it but if your phone is messing up and wont boot maybe you should go back to stock and re root when you read and learn more and feel more comfortable having a root.

Thanks for you quick replies.
I ninja edited my post, by the way. I'll give it a moment to charge and see what happens.
The phone was acting slightly stupid this morning after I attempted that update, so I guess I had to be sure it wasn't something drastic.
I have been comfortable with the root I had. If this phone bricks or blows up, then I have an excuse to get a GS3. Because, you know, I might as well. =p

Nexus not booting after system upgrade

Hi. I am a newbie on the forum so pardon me if I have posted in the wrong section.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus i9250 that I purchased under a 3 year agreement with Bell not too long ago, perhaps in May. One day I left my phone connected to my PC so I could transfer some video and picture files that were on there. After the transfer finished, I then proceeded to remove my Nexus from my PC. After a while, I noticed it restarted because the screen went blank and I heard it vibrate because it was on my desk.
My phone is encrypted, so when the phone restarts, or you turn the phone off, and on again, you need to enter a PIN to decrypt the storage. When I entered the PIN, the Nexus froze and then restarted, leading me to the exact same screen I was at previously. Now, I attempted to enter the boot-loader and go into recovery mode, but each time I went into recovery mode, the phone restarted normally. There were a few times I would see the android guy with what looks like a globe sticking out of his chest and a bar below him which probably meant recovery, but my screen would flash back and forth and eventually stick.
I took the phone in only to be told that the system image in the Nexus is corrupted and that it wouldn't be covered under the warranty. At that same time, I decided to go back home and see if I could work with anything. I attempted to use ODIN to put ICS 4.0.4 back on the Nexus, but in between the process, ODIN failed, and now I am left with a phone that can not turn on, go into recovery, or anything else it should.
I'm at a loss here and I'm wondering if anyone else would have any suggestions at this point. If I have to send it in, I'm okay with that, but if there is something that can be done from my PC, I would like to attempt that first. Thank you for your help.
Does anyone think they may have a solution?
Give this a try if it is truly bricked. Apparently it works wonders though I'm not sure if it will work in your case.

Thank you so much for your help. By using that program, I was able to boot back into ODIN mode and upload ICS 4.0.4 back on it!

Rolling Restarts

I've done some research on this and haven't found and answer, so im putting it out there for you guys to get at me and let me know. I have been experiencing Rolling restarts on my phone. The phone will boot up fully, but randomly it will just restart it self. At times if I just push the power button, to turn of the screen, the phone will restart again. The phone also has an issue of staying in black and not coming back on, so I have to take the battery out in order for me to get it back to boot up.
Notes:
Im running EL29 Stock. Nothing special at all.
If there is a thread already created for this, I apologize, but ive looked and I couldn't find it.
I'm experiencing something similar except i'm running AGAT's tFH13 rom and kernel.
Every time I get the phone into recovery or even download mode, the phone just reboots itself.
Out of curiosity I opened the mobile odin app and it gave me an error saying it could not detect the device model. -_-

Can you dump a logcat and attach?
(From ADB Shell)
Code:
logcat -d -f /sdcard/logdump.txt
Might help explain what's going on.

That's pretty odd, I don't think I've ever heard of something like that happening unless there was something physically wrong with your phone.. have you ever tried to use Odin to reinstall a stock Rom? & out of curiosity do you have an antivirus app?
I did the Reflash back to stock through odin. Took it to sprint this morning though and found that it was a bad battery. So easy fix but annoying problem.
And with that being said, It did it to me again! Guess that wasn't the issue.

I would say keep trying. Mine was doing that too but it finally held out long enough once to not restart on me. What I did was i just tapped the screen ever 10-15 seconds. Not sure if that did anythign or if I was lucky but It made it through.

I had my phone for less than a year. I had a sprint warranty and the Samsung 1 year warranty. Both covered this issue with no problem. I suggest taking it in if you cant find a solution to the problem. But if your rooted. Flash back to stock.
I was able to restore to a previous backup. From there i got Mobile Odin working and was able to flash the FH13 OTA, rooted though. I still can't get the power button to work and its still randomly rebooting but not as often. Still trying to get the phone to STAY in download mode to flash to stock(unrooted) with Odin.

You can possibly take the "risk" but I took mine that was a Rooted Stock version, and it passed their software test, so they gave me the new phone. Also if its rebooting as much or as fast as mine was, Its hard for them to even run a real test because the phone wont give them a chance to. Its up to you tho to make that decision.
Finally got the phone to stay in download mode and i was able to flash the Unrooted FF18 OC.
Reboots are fewer now but power button still doesn't work. I checked my account and my phone is still under 1 year warranty & i have the insurance. I'll be heading to sprint after work today.
Thanks for your tips and replies. :good:
Same issue. The power button on this phone is iffy. At least i think that's the problem
Swyped from a Galaxy S2 on CM10
update : they are replacing my phone because the power button is broken
It's gonna be a few days till I get the new one, tech says they are back ordered?
The stability and shutdown issues for me seem to be caused by a bad battery. Brought it into Sprint and they gave me a new one, no charge. Seems to have solved the problem.

[Q] Phone won't power on. Bricked?

Hi all,
I was having some random reboots on my HTC desire Z lately and decided it was time to try a custom rom. I followed the right steps to first downgrade to froyo, which was successful and next rooted the phone, which seem to have worked as well.
The next step was to get into recovery mode to install the rom, but I did not get to that. I took out the battery while it was still on to power it off, but then it did not power on anymore. Also connecting the charger has no effect at all, so it sure seems to be bricked.
Does anyone have a suggestion on what I can try, or what happened to it?
The way I downgraded and rooted was by using Strawmetals guide which can be found here:
http://minus.com/mu9vZ3P38
and was suggested in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912
I carefully completed all the steps, checked the MD5's etc. and made sure the notifications/verifications I got back in the process were correct..
Also, I wonder if I would run into problems if I send it back in for warranty. If I can't get it to boot, will they? And next they will probably blame me for rooting, right?
Regards & TIA
Yes they gonna blame you for rooting. I was had a same problem, no boot to recovery. I solved the problem with install 4Ext updater and fromit install 4ext tuch, and now I can flash roms. Try to find a charged battery or put yours into another phone and charge it. If I understand right your battery died?!

Sounds like it might be bricked mate, same thing happened to me... 3 times. They probably won't be able to get the phone to boot, where did you buy the phone from? My second one was from Vodafone with a warranty, when it bricked I took it in, they plugged the phone in and left it for a few minutes and tried to power it on, tried a different battery (All things I already tried) to see if the device was showing any signs of life, it wasn't and I walked out with a new phone. I doubt they'd be able to bring it back to life to see that it's been rooted. You COULD connect your phone to a car battery and fry it, tell them you went to sleep and woke up and the phone was very very hot and it burnt your hand and melted the charger cable, not sure if I could recommend this, never done it myself... but if you have no other option.
These were also the options I considered. Got to give it a try with a different battery, if I can find one. If that doesn't make a difference, I'll just hand it in and see what they have to say, as there's nothing else I can do without being able to power on the phone..
All of a sudden the phone started working again . And afterwards I was able to complete the update to Mimicry 1.5.
Strange problem, as the phone seemed to be dead for hours.. Hope it doesn't happen again!

[Q] LG Optimus G Stuck On LG Screen Need Help.

I was making a TWRP Backup when all of the sudden my phone just randomly turns off. I grabed my phone and it was really hot. Tried turning it on, but nothing happened. Then I connected it to the ac adapter and it turned on, but it would go to the LG logo, the screen turns black then it restarts. This does not stop unless I unplug it. I had previously made two backups before and nothing like this happened, but this time I enabled conpression<-------- This must have been what caused this. All I want to know is if this can be fixed or not. If it could be fixed I would be so happy if somone could tell me how to fix this. THANK YOU. P.S. THIS PHONE IS A BEAST. D

Likely bricked. Do you have flashing notification and capacitive lights? Have you LGNPST'd? If yes to both of those questions, you're in the same predicament as I was and hopefully you have insurance, because your phone is fried.

I had a similar problem as you. Upon getting the phone I rooted and used the FreeGee app from the Google Play store to unlock the bootloader. Everything seemed fine and dandy, until one day when I let my phone's battery drain completely. Pluggin it in to a wall charger resulted in the failed boot where the LG logo flashes before going to a blank, but backlit screen. Luckily, the first few times this happened, through a combination of quickly plugging and unplugging the usb cord and holding the volume up+power button, I could get it into recovery (TWRP). Then a simple cache & dalvik cache wipe, and the phone would boot up as if nothing ever happened. Very strange.
Well yesterday this happened again, however, this time there was no getting the phone into recovery. My previous methods of button mashing and plugging and unplugging weren't working. So, I decided to bite the bullet and use LGNPST to get back to ZV7. Now, like you mentioned, this failed boot would automatically happen, without pressing the power button to turn it on. So it was difficult to get the phone to stay off. I found that with the phone unplugged, if you continue to press the power button until the blank backlit screen turns off, AND continue to hold the power button for an additional five seconds, the phone would stay off and not auto power on into the failed boot.
Once I was able to get the phone to stay off, I pressed the middle of the volume key to depress both volume up and down, and then plugged a usb cord that was attached to my computer. This powered on the phone into download mode. Following the LGNPST guide I was able to get to around 67% complete before my phone turned off and an error message flashed on the computer screen telling me to power cycle the phone and reconnect. Well, the whole 67%/85% LGNPST failure is apparently common and not indicative of an actual failure; HOWEVER, my phone became completely unresponsive. It wouldn't power on at all. It didn't matter if the usb was unplugged or connected to the computer or wall charger. So, I was forced to unplug the battery. I followed this tutorial and successfully disconnected and reconnected the battery cord, and the phone shot back to life. It even booted up into the factory stock ZV7 rom. I guess that LGNPST was successful. It looked like I was on my way to returning my phone to breezy's deodexed ZV9 stock rom that I was previously running.
I went ahead and re-rooted, ran the FreeGee app again, and rebooted into recovery. Then I made a backup and attempted to flash my new rom. Now, I think this is where I royally screwed up. I was pleasantly surprised to see my screen layout and all of my settings still intact after LGNPST back to ZV7 and thought I could just wipe the caches and ignore the factory reset and system wipe before flashing. Perhaps it was this, but part of me also thinks there might be something wrong with my battery draining extremely fast in recovery.
I proceeded to flash and all seemed good, but rebooting resulted in the LG logo failed boot that we have already discussed. So, I went ahead and repeated the LGNPST-re-root process numerous times (switching to the freegee 0.5 batch file instead of the app). Everytime after the first initial restore, I could never get my phone to enter recovery. As soon as I rebooted after using freegee, the phone would be soft bricked again. Sometimes I would get the LG logo thing, other times I would get the dreaded alternating flashing red notification light and soft keys. A battery pull was usually required in these circumstances before I could get back into download mode to start all over.
I was about ready to give up when I took to the LGOG irc channel. That's when Xboxfanj stepped in and helped me out IMMENSELY. Over the course of several hours, he walked me through flashing some partitions in ADB. At times it seemed like there was no hope and that I should have just returned the phone, but he failed to acquiesce, we pushed forth trying a couple of other bootloader options. The new bootloader appeared to have fixed the phones erratic behavior with powering on and off, but I had no rom to boot into and no recovery. Xboxfanj recommended using fastboot to flash over a recovery. Once in the new bootloader screen my Windows XP machine detected new hardware and wanted some drivers. I attempted to use the [ADB/FB/APX Driver] Universal Naked Driver 0.72, but XP indicated that I was missing 'winusbcoinstaller2.dll'.
I grabbed winusbcoinstaller2.dll from here and all was good. Fastboot recognized the phone, I was able to flash recovery and subsequently boot into recovery. From there I reformatted the system, wiped data/factory restore, wiped cache, wiped dalvik cache, and flashed breezy's ZV9 deodexed rom.
Fortunately, after around 7 hours, I am happy to say my phone is back to being rooted, unlocked, and running ZV9. It powers on and off properly and can get into recovery without a hitch. I'm still curious what will happen if I let my battery drain completely. Perhaps I'll try it some time this week. I'll be sure to post back here if/when I do that. All in all, it was a harrowing, but educational experience.
Anyway, just wanted to give a big THANK YOU to Xboxfanj! You really are the man :good:. Thanks for your patience and determination.

S3 won't boot - black screen

Hey folks,
I was trying to flash a custom kernel (Phenomenal Extreme 4.0) from Clockworkmod on a rooted stock 4.1.2 rom and kernel. I placed the zips on my sd card, then flashed, but it was unsuccessful. Then, when I rebooted from CWM's main menu, the phone went dead. Nothing worked, no buttons, no nothing. Any combination I tried failed, from a simple reboot, to reboot into recovery, to a reboot into download mode. Took battery out, and placed it back in, still nothing.
I'd appreciate any help you can give me! If there's anything like a factory cable, that is still better than nothing. I think I bricked it, and no warranty (Samsung's 3 month is quite short). When I plug the phone in, the laptop responds with a sound but it's not the usual sound when you dock the device. A balloon says that device driver installation failed. Then nothing happens. In any case, I rooted it and there's a flash counter of 1 on it, even if I'm running stock everything. Again, I appreciate any help!

Hey folks,
I was trying to flash a custom kernel (Phenomenal Extreme 4.0) from Clockworkmod on a rooted stock 4.1.2 rom and kernel. I placed the zips on my sd card, then flashed, but it was unsuccessful. Any combination I tried failed, from a simple reboot, to reboot into recovery, to a reboot into download mode. Took battery out, and placed it back in, still nothing.

What forum did you find that kernel? Hopefully it was made for d2tmo.
+Bound for Valhalla!
I just checked, it wasn't. It's actually made for the international version -- my fault. Oh crap, I'm totally screwed, aren't I? *rolling eyes and a long sigh*
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1917234 My question is, it failed regardless, and why would it die AFTER I reboot the phone? It should've died right when I tried to install it through CWM.

Google jtag repair.
That's an expensive paper weight.
|When Emotion Goes Up, Logic Goes Down|
I made a Nandroid before messing around.
Once I do the JTAG repair, can I restore using that Nandroid after re-rooting and flashing CWM? The guy who will be doing the JTAG said that it's dangerous because there's a risk of bricking involved.
I would just restore things individually, personally. I don't know what you had on there, but is there anything that you can't restore some other way ?
That happened to me when i flash wromg kernel. And I had a panic attack...but I somehow manage to go into recovery mod....if you can go into recovery mod...have no fear back up is there lol
Just wipe everything and restore your backup.

I had the same problem when I first got my S3. I flashed a file that was for my S2 not realizing and the phone responded the same way or didnt respond at all. Im not saying this will work but you can try. Do the proper button combo to get into download. It wont show anything on your scrren but the phone could still be in download mode. Go ahead and try connecting it to your computer and see if odin will recognize it. Make sure you have your drivers installed and dont forget to push volume up to get all the way into download mode. It worked for me once before and I hope to never have to try it again. If you have already tried this then your out of luck and will have to jtag.
JTAG is no scam. It is a VERY reliable source! Go for it.

Never mind, warranty exchange. I don't want to send my phone to strangers, even if it's legitimate. Still $45-$60 on the credit card.
I have a question though, as long as the phone is under warranty, I can exchange for a replacement an unlimited number of times, right?

Yes you can...I did it with my S2 until I got one that did'nt have any signs of being refurbished. It looked brand new! I have even told them that something was wrong with the phone (hardware issue) when there was nothing wrong just because the one year warranty was about to run out and it had a few cosmedic blemishes..I have given them a lot of money in the past 9 years so I do'nt feel too bad... I did it with my Vibrant as well.
