Unlock the bootloader.

I'm wondering this myself... in traditional cell phone lingo I believe "Unlocked" means not locked to a particular provider. However I believe in this case it means the bootloader is unlocked allowing you to flash other ROMs?
Thats my take but I could be very wrong
(Tried posting this right away but have to wait 5 minutes... guessing someone will answer this definitively before I get to post this)

You can flash other roms without an unlocked bootloader, such as on the Razr. However, without an unlocked bootloader, you can't use custom kernels.

Not correct. There is no NAND lock on Samsung devices. You can flash custom kernels even if your bootloader is locked (assuming you have root of course).
All that an unlocked bootloader gives you is the ability to flash or boot images using fastboot.

If you are running 4.0.1 or 4.0.2, you can get root without unlocking your bootloader. Not the case on 4.0.4.
As mentioned earlier, unlocking can refer to two things: unlocking the bootloader or unlocking the carrier lock. In this case, we are talking about the bootloader. Most GNex devices are sold carrier-unlocked out of the box.

[Q] unlocking bootloader without volume buttons

Some time ago I broke my volume buttons. Today I had a problem flashing a rom and noticed that my bootloader was locked. "fastboot oem unlock" just brings me to the screen where I can choose with the volume buttons, but I don't have any. So how could I get root without the bootloader? (efrans method didn't work for me)

Misread and forgot it asked to choose to unlock.. My bad.
The only thing I can think to do is Odin flash back to ICS (if possible), from there use Efrant's guide to rooting without an unlocked boot loader.
After that, use BootUnlocker to unlock the bootloader. That *should* be it.
Note: If you can't get into download, you can purchase a USB jig from Amazon that will do the trick.
Efrant's guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1894717

then you cant unlock the bootloader. end of story.
This is why you don't keep a nexus without its first ability, which is fastboot.

You actually don't need fastboot or volume buttons to unlock the bootloader this way: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=41612401#post41612401. HTH!

BELL Xperia ZL bootloader unlock allowed: NO

Recently picked up my Bell one and noticed it says no.
Anyway around this ? how can i unlock the bootloader?
This is making me reconsider the device and go get the HTC One
may i ask what you need to do with an unlocked bootloader?
Root recovery and rom flashing can still be achieved with a locked bootloader.

well once cwm or twrp is fixed you can flash roms and not loose root or recovery.
as for why have an unlocked bootloader, well custom kernels.
I thought Sony was offering unlock bootloaders to everyone.
btw, have you tried the unofficial unlock tool?

I thought you could only load Sony-based Roms. Like Lite edition ROMs et all.
But what if I wanted to load CM10 onto my Bell ZL?
I definitely need to unlock the boot loader no?

99% of the ROMs for the ZL or for that matter almost any phone are for ones with an unlocked boot loader. Can ROMs be made for locked boot loaders as well? Sure they can. But devs have enough bugs and performance enhancements to deal with as it is to worry about locked BLs.

yes you need an unlocked bootloader to use official cm10, but in time you will see versions ported for locked bootloaders.

[Q] Unlock N5100 Bootloader

Hi,
Apologies if this has been asked before, I have searched the forums and google but not found the specific answer for the N5100. There are so many warnings about flashing a custom ROM without an unlocked bootloader and how it will brick your device that I haven't flashed one yet. My question is, is it absolutely necessary to unlock the bootloader and if so, how can I do it? There are no links to N5100 specific tools to unlock it and I can't find a way using any of the toolkits or utilities. There are custom ROMs available for the N5100 so people must be flashing them, right? If so, how did they unlock their bootloaders?
Thanks,
Coj

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I also used this to root the device. Does it also unlock the bootloader as it roots? It didn't explicitly say so, I thought they were two separate things I had to do. Is there any way I can check if my bootloader is unlocked?
this is the device information shown in toolkit, it suggests the bootloader is still locked. Is it?

I didn't have to do anything except CF AutoRoot then flash the recovery. However, I have a 5110 so hopefully someone here can validate for you just in case.

OK, so I took a punt and flashed knowing that I could brick my device but lack of specific info prompted me into it. It worked and I'm glad to say and I'm now running a nice custom ROM. One more question, is there a repository for stock apps on here?

Riddled by my (soft) bricked N5X ...

Hi guys
Noob here, but with a somewhat decent understanding of flashing and I'm kinda riddled by my current situation.
The current state of my phone is:
Locked bootloader.
Access to TWRP (2.8). Access to MTP and install function within TWRP.
OEM unlocking NOT allowed (since I can't boot into the OS).
So the logical thing to do (and as req'ed in dozens of threads with the same problem) would be to flash a custom ROM via TWRP's Install function, boot into it, enable OEM unlocking, unlock the bootloader and do whatever I want from there.
Except ... that all the ROMs I flash are stuck in bootloop. They go through the flashing process, TWRP shows success and then ... an endless android (or custom) loop when I reboot. I tried flashing PureNexus, Cataclysm and Chroma.
Any idea on what might be going wrong here (I thought of the vendor.img I have on right now being a wrong one, but I have no idea how to flash the good one without access to the vendor partition) ?
Any help would be appreciated, I saw that I could go through the LG flashtool/TOT unbricking method but I don't have i. a PC (I'm on a Mac) or ii. an original Nexus USB cable so that would put me back a few days.
Cheers
You can't flash a custom ROM with a locked bootloader....

Yes, you can in recovery ...
Apparently not. Let me rephrase. You cannot flash a custom ROM with your bootloader locked and your phone work properly.... reflash all stock images through ADB. Take the advice or don't.
How did you get in this sh!tuation? Did you OEM lock with TWRP installed?
Anyway, the TOT method is most likely the only way to get it going again. I wouldn't waste my time doing anything else. Ask a friend/family member to borrow a computer with windows on it.

I'm thankful for any help, sorry if I was dissmisive. I'm not aware of flashing through ADB, just sideloading.
I can flash via fastboot, but can't right now because of my locked bootloader.
Presently I can sideload via ADB in recovery (which amounts to the same as flashing from recovery if I understand correctly ?) but any other flashing/thinkering via fastboot/ADB is verboten because my bootloader is locked.
If you're thinking of something else I'd be glad if you could detail your thinkings and the steps I'd need to make
@chafouin you just reminded me that Google is posting full OTAs. At least for the Android N developer previews. So theoretically you could factory reset from recovery and sideload an OTA. OTAs don't require an unlocked bootloader.

The stock rom? Why is that a problem? Put the device in fastboot and load. Locked bootloader does not allow custom roms. It allows stock.

In my experience *on the 5x* locked bootloader doesn't allow you to flash factory images.
I haven't tested with latest bootloader, but that has been he case with past bootloaders.
Other manufacturers and phone models handle things differently.
You can however now flash stock using the FULL OTA provided on the same factory image site. In that case you would use adb sideload, not fastboot.

Have you tried factory reset from TWRP?
If I were you I wouldn't try to flash to stock unless as last resort. Locked bootloader with TWRP installed is better diagnostic situation that locked bootloader with stock recovery installed. If you try to flash to stock it is too easy to overwrite your TWRP with stock recovery (it happens behind the scenes)
That is ok, if you are out of options, but I would exhaust all other options first.

I've done it recently on LG G4 and BlackBerry PRIV where I used flashall command.
Neither has a possibility for bootloader unlock.

I've had other phones that allow flash if things are signed (which factory images are on those phones).
